Bush regrets comprehensive immigration didn’t pass

President George W. Bush told the Associated Press that he was disappointed immigration policies weren’t reformed during his tenure, referring to Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

“I’m very disappointed that it didn’t pass,” he said in an interview with correspondents from his home state. “I’m very worried about the message that said, ‘Republicans are anti-immigrant.’”

He continues, saying he wished comprehensive immigration would have been pushed immediately after his re-election in 2004.  This is code for saying he thinks he may have had enough political capital, at that time, to shove a horrible bill down the throats of the American public who overwhelmingly opposed it.

I’m disappointed as well.  I’m disappointed that a Republican, or any president for that matter, would sign bills such as Campaign Finance Reform and Sarbanes Oxley.  I’m disappointed that a president would nominate Harriet Miers for a seat on the Supreme Court. I’m disappointed that hard working Americans received no permanent tax relief.  Finally, I’m disappointed that a Republican president would move his party so far to the left that it is virtually indistinguishable from the democrat party and regret that he didn’t move it left enough.

God help us!

That Bush didn’t close the borders to walkins and allowed the USA to be overrun. A sad state of affairs for all involved.

Agree with your assessment, it is too bad that Bush’s legacy will now be the destruction of his own party. Proved the punching bag theory of governance doesn’t work, didn’t he.

I found him to be a little disengenious on this particular issue in that he mentioned nothing until he ran for the second time knowing his Republican Party would have NONE of it!

The word "comprehensive"

About the “Republicans are socialists” message he left everyone with.

This is the exclamation point on the sentence that reads

Good riddance Mr. President. I sincerely hope you enjoy a long retirement and I also hope we never hear from you again. On any subject.

Worse than

Carter?

I guess I’m not sure how old you are. :-)

The first President I remember is Truman.

Worse than Carter? Arguably, yes.

Carter was pathetic on all counts. Bush was way better on national security and would be a “good” President in my book if he had just stood up to the Ds for his policies (which, by-and-large, were correct). But overall, the guy has been a disaster for the country – expanded role of government across the board. He’s potentially been a disaster for our national security – watch and see what the Ds do the Pentagon budget and to our ability to gather intel.

Trying to pick the “worse” of Carter or Bush is like trying to decide if you’d rather die of cancer or liver disease.

LOL
