As a Jewish person with a fair degree of historical literacy about my faith, I am fully aware of the historical resonance of the term “blood libel”.
And I’m fully comfortable with Sarah Palin using it in this circumstance in which, like the Jews of the original blood libel, conservatives, Tea Party supporters, and Palin herself have been recklessly smeared by the liberal media and leftist politicians by being accused of having blood on their hands– a charge of which they are entirely innocent. In fact, “blood libel” is a perfect metaphor for what is going on here.
Which brings me to a larger point about Sarah Palin–Generally speaking, I have always been a fan, even though we come from very different cultural and religious backgrounds. I was delighted when McCain put her on the ticket. But as a Presidential candidate I’ve always had reservations about her– with her occasionally excessive “freelancing” and because (as an academic) I would like to see her address policy in a more detailed and substantive way.
But watching the entirely predictable reaction to this episode, this Jew has had his own “Road to Damascus” moment. And my realization is simply this: No one on the right exposes the true insanity of the left better than Sarah Palin– No one else exposes them for the unhinged, unprincipled cowards that they are. No one else is so unafraid to take them on whatever the consequences.
Sarah Palin is a fighter, and we desperately need fighters, if we are going to turn back the statist nightmare envisioned by our leftist overlords. I might personally be more comfortable engaging in policy wonkery with a Mitch Daniels or Mitt Romney, but neither of those men have the power to expose our enemies and send them into paroxysms of blind rage like Palin does.
Palin is the one that they hate. She is the one that they fear. She is the one that they know can tear down their false idols. She can lead conservatives as we attempt to cleanse the temple of American Constitutional governance and rededicate it to our founding principles.
And that’s why, as of right now, she not only has my support in this controversy, she has my vote for President.

Blood Libel
ashland_avenue (Diary) Wednesday, January 12th at 9:13PM EST (link)Dear cc, my thoughts below:
For 2000 years, we have wandered amongs countries and continents. Nowhere have we been as free to live & flourish as in the US.
Now the nation which has brought that freedom is awash in debt, $6 trillion more of it with the President’s party controlling both houses of Congress.
Addresssing the debt, confronting radical Muslims, protecting us from the miscreants pouring across the border, and reversing the addition of a huge entitlement that we cannot afford and that a majority did not and does not want, is not hate speech. It is akin to a dr’s comments about losing weight. And using an unrelated tragedy to criticize such speech/thought is akin to blood libel.
In past centuries, a village child dies of unknown causes. Folks in the village hate us, so put the blame on our shoulders, completely without evidence.
That is what those whose view of the nation is different would do to those Americans with whom they disagree. Sara Palin has called it a Blood Libel, not at all with out reason.
I urge us to assign blame for the deaths where it belongs; on a deeply troubled young man whom authorities identified but failed to help or at minimum isolate.
The media missed the full quote
Getting_Back_to_Basics Wednesday, January 12th at 11:29PM EST (link)Her choice of words seems even more appropriate when the full quote is read. The media has focused on merely using the term “blood libel,” when what she actually said was, “journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel….” This is what the media has been doing the past 5 days: manufacturing.
Well put.
bjwilson83 (Diary) Friday, January 14th at 1:12AM EST (link)You said it better than I could have. Yes maybe the left wants Palin to be the nominee because they think she would be easy to beat. They think the left will continue to have the support of the American people. They are essentially saying, “bring it on”. We should respond, “ok, here we come” rather than “all we really care about is the R after the name, who would you accept?” Now is no time for half measures. It is a fight for the future of our country. We either draw a line in the sand like they did at the battle of Alamo, or we watch our country go the way of the Roman empire.

It has been interesting to watch this narrative develop
constitutionalconservative (Diary) Saturday, January 15th at 12:34AM EST (link)Over the past few days. On the one hand, the media has continued to beat up on Palin, and have had some success in pushing their narrative including their lame contrast with Obama’s speech– because of course, as Allahpundit noted, it’s ahem, a bit difficult to come off as Presidential and above the fray when your opponents are accusing of inciting mass murder.
On the other hand, looking at the liberal rage that continues to spill over on Palin, I am reminded of the quote by the great 18th century French diplomat (and master of realpolitik) Talleyrand, who once observed of someone’s misdeed that “it was worse than a crime, it was a mistake”. By that I mean, that while the liberal media and politicians behavior concerning Palin has indeed been disgraceful, what is more interesting to me is that it is so unhinged from reality, and thus, ultimately, I believe it will hurt them over the longer term.
Palin makes the enemies of conservatism so angry that they tend to lose their better political judgment make mistakes when they go after her. Over the course of a full Presidential campaign, I tend to believe that those mistakes will ultimately add up and turn the campaign in her favor, no matter what the current polls say.
Palin isn’t perfect, but, I love her for the enemies that she has made.
Damn, dude
ssshannon1026 (Diary) Saturday, January 15th at 9:05AM EST (link)That is one powerful statement. And it is absoltuely correct. Frankly, I have always liked Palin (although her family concerns me a bit – I’m not sure that as a family they are prepared for the national spotlight). She is a fighter, and she is unafraid, the more they attack her, the stronger she gets. Is she a wonk? Of course not, but you know what? We’ve had generations of wonks and where have they gotten us? The wonks are the problem. Sarah knows that, and she scares the hell out of them.
One issue
josephusmyer (Diary) Sunday, January 16th at 10:57AM EST (link)It was, indeed, probably correct for Palin to use the phrase “blood libel”. What liberals were saying was that conservatives use violent rhetoric in the knowledge that people will die for political advantage. That is precisely a blood libel, just as much as saying Jews cause people to die to make matzah.
But to use such a strong, albeit technically correct, phrase is not necessarily a good thing. She could have used less strong terms, and got her message across without discomforting independents. And that’s why she wouldn’t be a good candidate – she may be right some of the time, but even when she is, she puts off independents.
They fear her the most because she speaks the truth.
melissatx (Diary) Monday, January 17th at 10:28AM EST (link)The left WANTS here to be our top dog in 2012, even if we do not yet have our picks in. They want her to be a target. She is much better as the cheer leader and guy chipping away at her lies. I fear she will be fettered if she runs and not be ABLE to speak the truth as she does now. Hokey or not, she scares the hell out them. She is the kid who asks why the emperor has no clothes on in a crowd of political enablers.
