Lately, President Obama has tried to assure the American people that he’s working really hard to get our money back from that TARP bailout he’s been using as a revolving slush fund. Nonetheless, since yesterday was a day ending in “y”, it was evidently time for another bailout. Rules are rules, after all.
This time it was $30 billion for loans to small businesses:
“The $30 billion in loan financing would come from money repaid by big banks that got help from the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program…That $30 billion would be used to create the Small Business Lending Fund, separate and distinct from TARP, according to two senior administration officials who outlined the program on condition of anonymity before Obama’s announcement.”
Did you catch that little two-step? Small businesses can get money for lending that comes from TARP but somehow…isn’t TARP. The distinction sounds like nothing more than window dressing, but why hide the truth? Maybe it’s because past TARP recipients (sometimes forced recipients) have been stigmatized and demonized by their association with this seemingly endless bailout fund. Or maybe it’s because businesses have learned an important lesson about TARP: where there’s a carrot, there will be sticks. Big sticks, and if I was a business owner considering an entanglement with TARP, I’d be more than a little wary of getting whacked.
Anyone can see that small businesses have been struggling. But even if President Obama assigned every last penny of TARP to this new TARP-redux for small businesses, he still won’t have addressed the real issue preventing robust private sector growth – the looming impact of smothering new taxes, mandates, regulations, and payoffs for Big Labor. These are some serious sticks that will beat down private enterprise with or without a loan from TARP.
If we continue down this path, the sustainable economic growth and long-term job creation we want simply won’t appear. Instead, we need to provide a commerce-friendly environment of lower taxes, lower debt, and lower spending. Not to mention we need to close down TARP to prevent the White House from using $700 billion of your money to bailout whatever company, industry, or sector it wants.

Does small business even want the loan? Most are contracting, not expanding. I run a very small 1 man show service business on the side to cover some of my wifes lost income as she loses customers (day care) and the businesses I service are either dropping my service (I service and sell aquariums normally found in waiting rooms) or cutting back and taking over some of the duties themselves.
Thankfully, I started (and still am) small, and have not had to borrow money to operate. However, if I was looking to expand I would NOT do it now. I am afraid of obama.

ss396 Friday, February 5th at 7:25AM EST (link)…bu if I recall correctly, TARP money could only be used for bank bailouts. There were not a lot of controls written into the legislation, but I’m fairly certain there was a limitation put on who could receive the funds. That, for example, is why they had to run the GM bail-out through GMAC; had to make it look like it was going to a bank.
By that, money for these small businesses cannot be allowed to appear to come from the TARP program – unless they can make all of these small businesses look like banks. I guess it’s good to know that even our belovéd thugocracy knows that they cannot stretch it that far. (Yay?)

Will Maxine Waters be on the selection committee? Will Andy Stern’s Pals get some? And who’s watching the hen house to insure that this isn’t another backdoor fund ACORN and it’s many different branches prior to the 2010 elections?
Will there be a “qualifer” to even see if the lending institutions in questions are stable and have sound business practices so they can pay the loans back or will we just tax healthy banks more money to cover their losses?
Is this a Fannie/Freddie redux?
Since when did we the US Citizen get involved in the loan business anyway?
Our company was courted by RCB (Royal Canadian Bank) a few years ago and we made the shift. Boy am I glad we did! They are hurting and scaling back on their business loans like American Banks, but at least they can focus on their business (and ours) and not worry about the Government. I wonder how many other small business are seeing foreign banks as a reliable option since this administration seems to think they can control any and every lending institution in America. I can just see the SEIU licking it’s chops over new recruits from this Bailout scheme.
Obama is PATHETIC
mt32 Friday, February 5th at 8:28AM EST (link)Right on Dr. Price! and Judd Gregg too.
The Obama administration is all about PR. The carrot of small business loans and tax credits is a joke. The loan program is not even legal under TARP as Senator Gregg pointed out unless Congress authorizes it in a new piece of legislation.
Mr. Obama is a disgrace to the Office he holds. He is killing America and its economy despite the PR to the contrary. He demonizes successful businesses large and small and seeks to gut them with mandate laden proposals like healthcare, cap and tax, card check, tax policy and stealth rule making and regulation. Then he sits back and wonders why there are no jobs? Incredible. He props up and bails out businesses that should be left to fail. He plays class warfare card pitting groups of Americans against each other. For example – Wall Street v. Main Street, labor unions against business, those making less than $250k against those making more than $250k. He even plays the race card (beer summit) and dispatches his political operatives to do the same. Don’t forget the goon Chicago politics intimidating members of Congress (“don’t think we’re not keeping score here”), the Supreme Court (SOTU) among others. He talks to us like we are children that just don’t understand what is good for us. It is PATHETIC!
One more news flash – Businesses don’t hire because of government bribes like tax credits and loan programs. Special programs/favors may buy you votes from senators from Louisiana and Nebraska but it don’t work like that in the business world. Businesses hire because they need someone to do actual work to support the businesses purpose of making a profit. Uh-oh, I said profit. Businesses live by budgets, something Mr. Obama apparently does not understand given his budget proposal earlier this week with trillion plus dollar deficits.
Thankfully, America is figuring or has figured out who Mr. Obama really is. Let’s all get behind good conservative candidates for elected offices from local municipal dog catcher to senator so we can take back this country from Mr. Obama and his liberal cronies. If there is an office that does not have a conservative running, strongly consider stepping up and running yourself. We must take back our country and then be vigilant in guarding it from liberals like Mr. Obama forever!

What are the real numbers?
radcabasa (Diary) Friday, February 5th at 2:29PM EST (link)Year 2000 we had a 200B surplus. Year 2008 we had a 11 trillion deficit. We had a Republican majority and president for almost all of the 8 years. They did’nt veto or block one spending bill until Obama came along then they found “Jesus” and blocked all they could. They approved a tax “relief” that cost 3 trillion lost revenue. The middle class lost $2000 in yearly income and the top 5% of income folks gained greater then 10 % wealth.
The present “deficit” is 10 trillion dollars from the 2000-2008 group and 1 trillion for Obama. Over 50% of the Obamas is due to decreased taxes (economy and the Bush tax cuts) and the need to pump money into the emergency conditions. Just what was the 700B stimulus?(Contrasted to the Bush-Paulson TARP to the banks).200B for middle class tax cuts,200B for extending unemployment benefits,200B for keeping the state teachers and firemen and police etc. working and services. What part do you not like?
The banks are not lending and business are laying off workers and cutting back. The Private sector is hiding out and holding their money. The only money available is from Government. Tax cuts for unemployed folks and businesses with no income are not going to add much. The tax collections are 1.1 T private,296B corporate,935 B Social security. Cutting taxes 10% (highly unlikely) gives about 300B to the country. However, this increases the deficit another 300B per year. It has been shown that these tax savings go to saving programs and do not stimulate the economy. (Review the Reagan “Trickle down” results).
You should be very suspicious of all the simple quick answers the politicians will give out. There are no quick simple fixes folks. Like it or not we will need to reduce spending (this will mean defense, wars, and medicare) and we will need more revenue. If we were a family it would mean cutting back on food, transportation, rent, clothing etc. And getting an extra job. This article implies cutting back on new clothes and otherwise don’t change a thing will answer the family budget. Oh Yeah?
