RedState, Blogs and Some Healthy Debate

Thanks for your help

Anyone who reads RedState on a regular basis knows by now that the contributors who lend content to the site aren’t shills for Republicans in Congress.

And it’s that dogged independence that gives so much credibility to the conservative blogosphere — credibility that simply doesn’t exist on the left, where blogs like the Puffington Host [sic.] and Daily Kos serve as a bulletin board for standard Democratic talking points, and where opposing viewpoints are shouted down from view.

RedState contributors and other conservative bloggers work to advocate a core set of ideals and beliefs – and these are the ideas that’ve helped grow the conservative movement in the past, and allow it to continue its growth in the present in a manner that’s both unabated and unapologetic.

While I’m generally on the same page with the readers and contributors here at RedState, there have been times where we weren’t exactly on the same paragraph – but there has never been a time when I dismissed the valuable discourse that this site fosters on a daily basis.

That open debate not only keeps RedState on the forefront of conservative blogs, but the new features on RedState 3.0 stand to ensure that this blog stays on the cutting edge for a long time to come.

A value can’t be placed on the keen insight that thoughtful dialogue promotes and fosters. I believe that the Democratic Party is at a significant disadvantage because of their lack of online discourse, though it is hardly surprising that that is the case.

This is a party, after all, that seems to actively discourage the very discourse that the medium of blogging was created to foster. That’s never been clearer than it has been so far this year. First we saw the Democratic leadership block a needed update to our nation’s foreign surveillance laws — simply because they knew it would pass. We’ve watched them pass bill after bill under rules that wouldn’t allow any debate and now their party is taking every possible step to avoid having a vote to allow Americans to produce more American energy.

Clearly those few examples prove that the majority simply doesn’t have enough confidence in their ideas to bring them to the floor with full debate and a chance to vote on amendments – much less allow the free market of ideas to have their way with them.

So, as RedState celebrates its fourth birthday this year, I want to thank each of you for fostering debate, allowing me to talk directly to the heart of the conservative movement, and cutting through the filter of the mainstream media.

Keep up the good work, congratulations on your new site launch and thanks for helping us fight the good fight.

Well said Congressman.

Yes, I am in your district. Yes, I am fairly biased in your favor.

However that doesnt take away from your post.

Intellectual honest and debate act as purifying proces which pushes our core conservative ideals.

In any case, thank you for stepping up and talking to us directly.

Don't back out on us, Congressman

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, July 15th at 5:50PM EST (link)

I realize there are a lot of considerations that are being weighed in terms of electoral chances for the fall but I hope that Republicans in Congress will realize that a lot of their problems have arrived in the past two years because of a failure to adhere to their principles.

On the outside we can’t do anything to make members of Congress act as Republicans and it may be that the Party itself has to suffer in a long walk through the desert in order to recover its principles, but I hope not: I hope the very real problems they’re facing in this election tell them that instead of schucking them off, they should be fighting for them.

It’s a bit of complicated matter and our Presidential nominee needs to be on board also. My advice is to speak to him: because Republicans in Congress need a President they can rally behind when necessary, and they have to stop this dissolution that has charactized them since 2006.

Here in the blogosphere we’re just little people but we believe — I BELIEVE — in the fundamental values that define our party. It’s about time we stopped transgressing them for the sake of political expediency.

The first thing that should happen

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, July 15th at 5:55PM EST (link)

Is genuine and transparent earmark reform. We have not reduced the size of the Federal Government in any meaningful way. If we don’t start doing it now, by the time I’m a grandfather this country is going to be Socialist.

So you folks in Congress need to make up your minds and start acting instead of dodging.

Minor quibble, kowalski...

rbdwiggins (Diary) Tuesday, July 15th at 6:09PM EST (link)

“… we can’t do anything to make members of Congress act as Republicans…”

The problem: They have been acting like Republicans (pre-1994 Blue-Bloods).

The solution: They must act like conservatives.

“Well, the trouble with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, but that they know so much that isn’t so.” – Ronald Reagan

I mean on one level

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, July 15th at 6:10PM EST (link)

I mean, just on a level of utter amazement and apoplexy, I would really like to know:

Does anyone in Congress look at the stuff they appropriate and ever, ever ask:

“Why in the heck are we doing this? Where was it written that we should be doing this? In what way are we serving this Republic instead of serving ourselves by allowing these things to be funded by taxpayer money through the appropriations process? Aren’t we just lying to the American people? Or are they already so used to being lied to that they don’t care any more?”

Despite our current economic troubles we live in the richest nation on Earth, one in which the opportunity should matter more than the guarantee. Take that as you will, but I think our Party is suffering because we’ve got too many people who just don’t want to tell people what they need to hear — in Congress.

At least half of what the Federal Government does right now through the budget process should be dispensed with. Republicans in Congress have a very wide range of options from which to choose if they wanted to target wasteful spending. All of them are beginning to remind me of Union members, watching their own backs first.

STOP. NOW. PLEASE.

Quibble accepted

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, July 15th at 6:13PM EST (link)

They really do, and I understand the distinction you’re getting at.

And really someone should start asking

kowalski (Diary) Tuesday, July 15th at 6:25PM EST (link)

Someone should really start asking some very hard and tough questions when it comes to the cost of health care. Everyone says they want to reduce it, but they really don’t: because it has become a self-appropriating, self-aggrandizing drain on our economy.

You’re cruel if you want to reduce the cost of health care: the result is that the cost continues to rise beyond any reasonable bounds. It’s going to bankrupt us, Congressman Blunt, and it’s going to happen unless people start acting to really lower the costs. And that means that Americans aren’t going to be able to get for free what they think they deserve. They don’t deserve it, and it shouldn’t be paid for by the government, nor should it be mandatory.

I think you have the what it takes to take it to the Democrats….

1st please do not call them the Democratic Party, there is nothing Democratic about them.

2nd, could you please do a photo-op walking from the House to the nearest gas station ala Pelosi and friends 2 years did to embarrass Republican’s.

3rd, please hold a press conference from the House and Senate everyday to lean on the Democrats because they certainly did that in the 2 years from 04 to 06…and that daily barrage did you guys in.

Turnabout is fairplay and we out here are waiting for you all to get in the game and kick some..you know what.

Thank you for posting here, we appreciate a good conservative voice, we just wish we could hear more of them.

good idea on walking to the gas pumps

KBDay (Diary) Tuesday, July 15th at 8:55PM EST (link)

The gas pumps idea is a good one. I’m astounded at the backlash from some Democratic reps about this drilling issue.

I told someone yesterday if we’d done this 10 (really even 5) years ago, we’d be much better off right now. Frankly, everyone is focusing on the economy as a negative. There are good things happening with the economy right now. The biggest issue in my opinion for young people and lower income people is the price of gas and the price of food.

I mentioned to another friend the food prices are partly a result of diverting crops for alternative energy programs, but they’re also a result of issues like the tomato/salmonella mystery (now it’s peppers or Basil or whatever).

Thank you for paying us modest bloggers a visit. I enjoyed reading your post and I always enjoy reading what you write elsewhere as well.

Best wishes from sunny Florida–Kay

Neil, You're too generous,

dbecraft Tuesday, July 15th at 9:47PM EST (link)

Yes, the conservatives are but a section of the Republican Party (but a large part is my guess). If the party continues to move left (centrist to some here), they will lose many long time supporters. There are some political beliefs that apply to all Republicans and they should not be abandoned.

I know you as one of the Conservatives on this blog so this is not really aimed at you, but the direction that this blog has taken recently, (Republican Party vs Conservative), has been disappointing.

Congressman Blunt, you and your party have much work to do…

Since I only post maybe once a month or so, I’m actually surprised that you even noticed! Actually, I’m shocked that you have even seen me post here at all!

Well, to relieve your pain (politics maybe), I am a conservative – not necessarily a Republican so there-in lies the problem. You are free to take that as you will.

I love the conservative values of this site but have since become a bit argumentative (a minor fault) since McCain became the Republican option. That may be problematic to you, but to me it is my democratic choice. I leave it up to the site managers to decide whether I continue to post here at all.

Not to be antagonistic, but why are you being argumentative anyway? I have not said anything that other Conservatives on this site have opined many times…

dbecraft Wednesday, July 16th at 1:04AM EST (link)

Look, I have my bad momments (being a conservative on a mostly Republican site) and have at times wished that I was banned because I was going so against the grain here. That does not make me an evil person or a non-Republican. It just means that I was fed up with the current posts.

You should realize that and give all other posters (especially Conservatives) a reasonable break.

I have been fed up with the “Republican” leanings here (party before principals) but at least understand that many here are true Conservatives and do try to understand that. I post my feelings at times (that are anti-Republican) that contradict the majority here. I do only have the Republican majority at heart when I criticize them. Heaven knows, they need it at times…

So… When I sound anti-Republican, it is with a heavy heart and hope that they come around to “my thinking”… Heh, waiting for that day…

I scream it at the TV every time they say it and for the life of me I can’t figure out what’s so hard about a simple comeback like that to show them for the fools they are!

This is exactly what Gov. Palin has said. This has been reiterated by many Republicans/Conservatives so many times. My concrete example for you is…. YOU.
Truth be told, you could even get results immediately, say next few weeks if we start TODAY. If you start drilling today, the market will correct itself immediately to incorporate relief of oil supply crunch, the main argument by speculators. (Finance experts call that as Market Efficiency Theory).

On “real assets”, you will even get result within 3 years at least, depending on specific sites. Exploration is a tricky business. You’ll never fully know things unless you start doing them.

So, your disappointment of conservative/republicans maybe “unfair”, especially to me and… to yourself.

You must be more specific next time.

The following statement:

“If it’s going to take 10 to 20 years…isn’t it time we at least got started?”

cut’s to the heart of the issue in one short sentence, shows the Democrat’s talking points to be empty and vapid and shows the Republican has a backbone and is willing to stand up for what he believes instead of cowering in a corner acting like he’s ashamed to be a Republican!

I als0 see you didn’t address my biggest frustration that these guys can’t make headway against a Pelosi/Reid Congress with a 9% approval rating.

As for any disrespect, if the Congressman doesn’t want to face criticism, he shouldn’t be in politics and he definitely shouldn’t be in leadership. I’ll give respect where respect is due…I’m just sorry there is so little respect due in the Republican Caucus today. I hope the representative can take what I’m saying and realize that I speak for millions of Conservatives that are sick of the never ending game of Democrats attacking while Republicans take the lumps delivered like a battered wife…it’s time for a burning bed and if these guys won’t light the match, they deserve to lose this November like they keep telling us they’re going to!

Is this the kind of nonsense we can expect from Blunt?

edsbowlingshoe Thursday, July 17th at 11:29AM EST (link)

Nice winner of an article, Congressman, filled with statements like “where blogs like the Puffington Host [sic.] and Daily Kos serve as a bulletin board for standard Democratic talking points.”

Standard – do you mean as in “anti-torture?” Yeah, I guess that’s standard for Dem blogs…not for you though, since you support torture. Oh – perhaps you mean supporting environmental regulation for the good of American citizens? Well, yeah, that’s pretty standard in Dem blogs – not for you though, and not here! After all, your boy McCain has a ZERO rating from the League of Conservation Voters – he’s almost as much of an environmental nightmare as he is an imperialist warmonger.

Perhaps by “standard” you mean Dems not wanting to get their civil liberties trampled upon by quaking-in-their-boots Republicans who will give up any liberty and spy on their fellow Americans if it will make their miniscule risk of getting hurt in a terrorist attack even more miniscule? Yeah, that’s pretty standard for Dems…interesting that you and your lily-livered cronies are scared enough to sign whatever authoritarian bill crosses your desk though.

Nearly 50% of Americans identify as Democrats, and they engage in open debate just like any other American. To deny this obvious fact is to pathetically pander to the Red State audience and to weaken your credibility. Kudos on accomplishing each of this in such a succinct post.
