Rep. Pence, thank you for supporting “backboning” rather than merely “jawboning.”

As William Safire wrote in a memo in 1969:

We deride “jawboning” as (a) government wagging a finger at business and labor to act with restraint while government acts without restraint. (b) Government asking labor and business to do what is against their self-interest and in the public interest, which is usually ineffective, and when it works rewards the greedy and penalizes the patriotic.

We introduce “backboning” as (a) government setting an example of restraint by its own, admittedly unpopular, belt-tightening actions, thereby earning the right to call for others to follow that example. (b) telling business and labor to assume a lowered rate of inflation in their own interest – so they won’t price themselves out of markets or jobs — as well as in the public interest.

Jawboning says “Do what we say, not what we do;” backboning says “Do what we do.”

Jawboning emphasizes a plaintive “do good” backboning stresses a realistic “be smart,” which will result in good for the public.

why should I even bother supporting Republicans for any office so long as these types of acts are voted through by the GOP Senators. Why, explain to me why should I care any more, since the GOP can not get the whips together and stick to the principles you espouse. My Government is going somewhere that I can not follow and I do not see anything the GOP has done to change any of that so why? Why waste my time? I know that Obama’s 3.7 Trillion dollar budget will pass, yeah it may be 3.3 Trillion but that is not stopping the march to bankruptcy. I just can not support the GOP until they stand together on principle and not politics,( i.e. vote for the Service Act last night and against the Porkulus bill last month) Tell me why you deserve my support?

I was happy to see you put out an alternative to the Democrat spending plan.

But… could you please flesh it out a little?

The Republicans/conservatives must disect the liberal agenda. Attack that agenda with simple language and examples

Apart from this. The biggest problem in the Congress is the propensity of Republicans in the Senate who feel that finding a solution means having to comprimise basic principles.

Your “budget” is an embarrassment. Those of use who hoped the GOP congressional leadership would offer a serious alternative to the Democrats’ scarcely hidden goal of suffocating the country under a mountain of debt and a crushing welfare state instead of continuing to behave like a damned bunch of fools are sorely disappointed.

Rep. Pence, I’m all for debate as long as the debate is driven by someone who knows what they are talking about. Most of what I see with the Republicans of late are a bunch of political taxi-drivers picking up bland ideas from the D.C. streets and honking their horns in excitement as if they just picked up the blasted Queen of England!

Hopefully the RINOS are taking stock of all the tea parties taking place, the comments here (and other conservative blogs), as well as taking some time to reacquaint themselves with the Constitution. The only way the American people are going to survive this nonsense is to physically take back our country. If that means creating a new Conservative Party that is fiscally and socially conservative from a Constitutionalist viewpoint, then let’s go.
