The Associated Press provided the information about Obama’s refusal to comment.)

President Barack Obama on Thursday refused to answer questions about the hostage situation off the coast of Somalia.

The president was asked about the incident as he met with U.S. homeowners to discuss refinancing mortgages. At the close of the White House event, the president was asked by a reporter if he was concerned about the piracy incident.

Obama responded: “Guys, we’re talking about housing right now.”

Reporters were then ushered out of the room as they usually are after such events.

As of midday Thursday, Obama had not yet commented publicly on the incident.

Obama is weak, coward with no backbone as evidenced by how low he can bow and kiss the feet of foreign Kings.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Pirate Band Sending Reinforcements to Kidnappers, Group Says
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Hamsa Omar

April 9 (Bloomberg) — The band of pirates whose members hijacked a U.S.-flagged ship yesterday in the Indian Ocean is sending reinforcements to the kidnappers holding the captain hostage, said a member of the group who spoke from Somalia.

The man, who called himself Da’ud and identified himself as one of the pirates, spoke by phone from the area of Eyl, Somalia. He said he had been in contact with the four pirates who boarded the Maersk Alabama and who then took the captain hostage on a lifeboat that has stalled off the coast.

snip

“We sent reinforcement men to help them,” said Da’ud, who declined to identify himself further or give a contact for the pirates on the scene. The reinforcing pirates are going to the area in two groups, one of which is already at sea, he said.

“The last information we received from them was that American small airplanes and helicopters are flying over them while the lifeboat’s fuel is running out,” Da’ud said. “The situation will end soon. Either the Americans take their man and sink the boat with my colleagues, or we will soon recover the captain and my colleagues in the coming hours.

“But if they, Americans, attempt to use any military operation I am sure that nobody will survive,” he said.

These are no longer “just” pirates but terrorists. They have issued a direct threat of harm. They have challenged Obamatopia.

Wait, I thought the world would love us for electing Obamatopia? Wouldn’t you think the pirating terrorists would pass on an American ship and crew thanks to Obama?

Still no word from Barry.

Day 79: Obama Does…Very Little
Posted by Brian Montopoli | Comments 2

(AP Photo/Evan Vucci)
On his seventy-ninth day in office President Obama…didn’t do much.

The president scheduled no public events on the day that he returned from an exhausting trip to Europe, Turkey and Iraq. The trip ended around 2:30 AM this morning when he stepped off his plane following a 12 hours, 18 minute flight from Baghdad.

Of course, Mr. Obama may well have been hard at work in the Oval Office today. But it’s certainly possible that he spent the day catching up on sleep — and maybe kicking back with a few episodes of “Entourage.”

I didn’t think it would be possible to be more annoyed at this situation than I already was. But, dammit, what kinda crap is this? Four guys in a boat with no gas, versus a destroyer full of seamen, and we’re out there negotiating, and giving time for pirate reinforcements to show up?

This is the single worst operation I’ve ever heard of. This whole situation could’ve been over with hours ago, and it would have taken all of 3 seconds.

Pirate Terrorists Escalating

Common_Cents (Diary) Friday, April 10th at 9:44AM EST (link)

When will they be called terrorists?

This now involved several international countries. I bet obama will say something now, since it isn’t just Americans involved.

“Mohamed Samaw, a resident of the pirate stronghold in Eyl, Somalia, who claims to have a “share” in a British-owned ship hijacked Monday, said four foreign ships held by pirates are heading toward the lifeboat. A total of 54 hostages are on two of the ships — citizens of China, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Tuvalu, Indonesia and Taiwan.”

“We are not intending to harm the captain, so that we hope our colleagues would not be harmed as long as they hold him,” Badow said.

“All we need, first, is a safe route to escape with the captain, and then (negotiate) ransom later,” he added.”

The price of poker just went up. MSM says pirates, I say terrorists!

You’d think guns would be trained on the boat and soon as there was some separation they’d be blasted.

However, I think the captain tried to escape in the dark and it would be difficult to see exactly who was in the water with night vision. And I’m sure the lifeboat is bobbing up and down pretty good too.

I trust our military would have taken action if it was possible.

Obama? still MIA. But with the update of the pirates, now TERRORISTS, bringing other hijacked boats and hostages to the area I suspect Obama might say something since its not just a lowly single American boat hijacked, American crew of 20 held hostage for several hours and now just one American hostage for ‘only’ a couple days.

Pirates holding US hostage demand ransom

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A Somali in contact with a pirate leader says the captors of a U.S. sea captain want a ransom and are ready to kill him if attacked.

“The Somali, who helped negotiate a ransom paid last year to pirates who seized a Ukrainian ship carrying tanks, spoke Friday on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. He says he has spoken with a pirate leader on the ground in Somalia who is coordinating action on the lifeboat adrift in the Indian Ocean. He says the plan is to get the hostage to shore to negotiate from a better position.”

Wait, so the terrorist pirates lied about an exchange with the captain and one terrorist held by the crew. That was a big big mistake. Why would anyone believe that they would return the captain if allowed to escape to land for even better negotiating leverage? I’m sure the US negotiators are throwing that in their face. No honor among thieves, I mean TERRORISTS.

I wonder if we can get military on the ground in Somalia to cover the ports?

Time for military to ride along on ships to surprise hijackers. Or perhaps some decoy ships sailing around in the area. Welcome to the jungle mofos!

Wait, what happened to the world loving America once Obamatopia(MIA btw) was elected. You’d think these pesky pirates would just bypass American ships and just wave while on their way to hijack some other ship.

Now that the terrorists are bringing international hostages on the scene I suspect we’ll hear from our apologist in chief.

Both Masters, Mates, and Pilots (the Captain’s union) and the Marine Engineers Beneficial Association (representing engine room employees) are major political players even though they are small unions. MM&P has about 6800 members nationwide. I don’t know how many MEBA has but it is larger and represents quite a few non-shipboard employees as well. While both are small, their members are very, very, very, very well paid and the unions have quite high dues, so they have money to spead around. Both are notable in that they frequently endorse Republicans so long as the Republican is with them on shipping issues. MEBA in particular throws a lot of money around in Congress.

MM&P and MEBA, who represent the licensed employees on Alaska’s ferries, were the only two State employee unions who endorsed Governor Murkowski. That made them a total pain in my butt because we had to be at least somewhat nice to them. Under the word avaricious in the dictionary, it has the logos of those two unions!

French commando operation on another hijacked yacht

Common_Cents (Diary) Friday, April 10th at 4:11PM EST (link)

By Gregory Viscusi

April 10 (Bloomberg) — French commandos freed a sailboat seized by Somali pirates a week ago, the second rescue of a French yacht in six months.

One of the five hostages was killed in the raid, while the others, including a 3-year-old, are safe, the French military said in a statement today. The commandos killed two pirates and took three prisoners in the three-minute operation.

“France has shown its determination not to give into blackmail,” Defense Minister Herve Morin said in a press conference late today.

Offers Refused

“Today, with the menaces getting more precise, and with the pirates refusing offers and heading toward shore, it was decided to launch an operation to free the hostages,” Morin said.

That should put some pressure on the terrorist pirate kidnappers once they get this news.

Breaking: Obama reaches out to "moderate" Pirate community

ColdWarrior (Diary) Friday, April 10th at 4:38PM EST (link)

http://exurbanleague.com/2009/04/09/obama-issues-statement-on-the-pirate-attack.aspx

After maintaining his silence for two days, President Obama will soon make his first public statement about the pirate attack upon an U.S.-flagged vessel off the Horn of Africa. After several inquiries and a few well-placed bribes, Exurban League has received an early transcript of the President’s remarks:

Good evening. As you know, early yesterday, Somali-based pirates attacked the Maersk Alabama, a freighter carrying relief supplies to Kenya. While we do not yet know all the details, the Alabama’s crew re-took control of the vessel and forced the pirates off the ship.

Since the pirates are still holding the captain, I have sent FBI negotiators to facilitate his safe and speedy release. I assure his friends and family that I will not stop until this man-made disaster is resolved in a peaceful, tolerant and ecologically-sound manner.

Obviously, this incident has raised many concerns among Americans. There have been calls for justice and even violence against the misguided perpetrators. But such an emotional reaction has led to the disparagement of entire groups with which we are unfamiliar. We have seen this throughout history.

For too long, America has been too dismissive of the proud culture and invaluable contributions of the Pirate Community. Whether it is their pioneering work with prosthetics, husbandry of tropical birds or fanciful fashion sense, America owes a deep debt to Pirates.

The past eight years have shown a failure to appreciate the historic role of these noble seafarers. Instead of celebrating their entreprenuerial spirit and seeking to partner with them to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.

Some of us wonder if our current Overseas Contingency Operation would even be needed had the last administration not been so quick to label Pirates as “thieves,” “terrorists” and worse. Such swashbucklaphobia can lead to tragic results, as we have seen this week.

To address this issue, I have instructed Vice President Joe Biden to create a cabinet-level Czar of Pirate Outreach and Buccaneer Interrelation. In addition, June 1-7 has been designated as Pirate Awareness Week, during which all federal buildings will fly the Jolly Roger and sponsor sensitivity training. Thankfully, my American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will fund free grog and hard tack for all attendees.

Finally, to all pirates listening to international broadcasts, shortwave services and ship-to-shore radio, let me say this:

Ahoy, me regret arr relationship has set sail in a scurvy manner. Arr people share many mutual ‘alues and concerns on t’ raging main. Perchance, could ye handsomely release the cap’n o’ the ship and I assure that no harm will come t’ ye or ye hearties. Let us smite t’ reset button and launch our seabond on a new pegleg. Savvy? Godspeed t’ ye and t’ ye beauties. Aye, me parrot concurs.

Seafarers official: Pirates hijack US tugboat

By MICHELLE FAUL and TOM MALITI – 22 minutes ago

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The head of a Kenyan seafarers’ program said Saturday that Somali pirates had hijacked an American-owned tugboat with 16 crew in the Gulf of Aden.

Nairobi-based Italian Ambassador Pierandrea Magistrati said he only could confirm that “there is a boat that has been hijacked, I believe by Somali pirates.”

The hijacking took place as the American captain of the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama was still being held hostage on a lifeboat being watched by two U.S. warships.

The terrorist pirates are challenging you Mr. President. You are emboldening them.

“authorizing” US flagged merchant vessels to arm themselves for defensive purposes in time of war. I don’t have any Admiralty Law sources here, so I can’t look it up, but I think it goes back to the Treaty abolishing privateering in the 19th Century. Of course when they were talking about arms for those purposes they were talking about naval guns.

I suspect politics and training and insurance issues are the reason there are no small arms on these vessels. We might not want to “offend” nations that have draconian gun laws by having outlawed guns aboard a merchant vessel. I don’t see how it would matter much. There really isn’t a US Merchant Marine for anything except the Jones Act trade to Alaska, Hawaii, and the Pacific Territories and vessels operated under contract to the government. I think there are less than 200 bottoms total. Out in the World, any ship flying a US flag is doing government business, not trading, so why not arm them?

I know that I and most of the people I know never leave the dock unarmed, but it’s only incidentally for personal protection from bad people; there’s some awfully big bears on the islands around here!

Wouldn't have to do much of it and the pirates

Achance (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 12:48PM EST (link)

would find a new business. Easy enough to do; the US has lots of mothballed freighters and they wouldn’t have to be heavily armed. Something like the 20-40 mm cannons that the military has zillions of and a few marines. Just hoist a flag of convenience and sail in harm’s way.

‘Course, somebody might think we were damaging our standing in the World by being so bellicose, so we won’t do that. My money is on we don’t do anything and the Captain winds up dead or in Somalia. The pirates will gather the other hostage ships around themselves and we won’t fire on them for fear of killing foreign national hostages. There are two warships there that together could probably prevail against a full scale attack by any country in Africa and they’ll just sit there impotently.

We’ll probably never hear the truth, just as with the bin Laden miss, but that Captain was probably thinking if he just got a little distance by jumping in, the ship would blow the pirates away. But, in the brave new world of BHO, I’m sure the ship had to get an OK from Washington to fire on the pirates. It is going to be a miserable four years!

Might want to remember that Pirate attacks were also occurring off the Horn of Africa during President Bush’s time in office too, and not a whole heck of a lot was done then ether. That’s not a endorsement of his Obamaness, but I watching to see what is done about this outrage, that’s the real test, and no 4 days is not enough time to judge how this administration will react quite yet. The response by this administration may be a hopeless Jimmy Carter type response or something else, but I think everyone hopes for the successful rescue of Capt. Richard Phillips.

As to your other comment about a US city being attacked, we have some very good men and women who are working each and every day to prevent that, no matter who the President is. Call me a naive fool if you wish, but I put great faith in those good and professional men and women who are protecting us every day, all politics aside.

Were American ships attacked?

No

SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 2:47PM EST (link)

The attack of a US flag ship, anywhere in the world has not occurred for a very long time, something in excess of 100 years from what I have read.

The tug boat just attacked was not a US flag ship, it was Italian flagged and an Italian crew but owned by US interests.

It was however only a matter of time for a US flagged ship to be attacked, and Pirate attacks off the Horn of Africa have been going on for many years before His Obamaness took office.

The question for me is not how this happened, this attack on a US flag ship was in my mind only a matter of time, no the question and the test for his Obamaness is what is his administration going to do about it. That is unless you are making the argument that these Somali Pirates specifically targeted a US flag carrier for some other reason related to the US being weaker under Obama. That could be true, however I have seen no one make the case for this attack being anything other than a target of opportunity.

Only one answer to the question is acceptable to me, with the full force and anger of this country. The other global question of is the US the world’s policeman and is the Horn of Africa is the latest place where that policeman is wanted is another question all together. I’m not sure what the answer is to that, but nation building and the US acting as the world’s policeman, well that got a lot of discussion back in the day with Clinton and Yugoslavia in the early 90′s.

Steve, do you agree with me that President Bush should

have dealt with this issue? And that we may be attacking President Obama too soon on this matter?

Not really

SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 3:32PM EST (link)

Mike,

President Bush’s hands were a bit tied on this issue, and frankly most of the shipping attacked was not involved in US trade interests up to this point.

The most notable and recent ships taken by Pirates:

A Ukrainian ship carrying arms to Africa

A Saudi (?) tanker taking oil not to the US.

As a conservative principle there is the issue of using US power to become the world’s policeman, and where our vital interests are. In the case of the Horn of Africa and Pirates, why is this a problem the US should solve when the vast majority of the ships being attacked are not US flagged or carrying cargo for US interests. Piracy off Africa is something the EU, the UN and perhaps NAATO should be addressing in my mind.

The French, the Germans and others tend to not want to help the US, so why should we use our military as the world’s policemen in some of these areas of the world were our interests are small, that’s a question to ponder and argue I suppose and one President Bush struggled with I would think.

On the question of judging his Obamaness too quick on this issue, perhaps, but it is a test of where the line is for US interests in the world, and those that hate us are watching.

Raising heck right now before a reasonable amount of time for any administration to act is not wise in my view, a bit of the boy who cried wolf at play. But make no mistake, a weak Jimmy Carter style response to this aggression against one of our US flagged ships should be strongly condemned by the Republican party in no uncertain terms. Let’s not even talk about what should be done if his Obamaness pulls a trick out of the French bag of tricks and pays a ransom.

Then we differ

SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 10:46PM EST (link)

We the US are not the guarantor of anything other than the interests of this country.

In the Horn of Africa, US interests are to make sure that US interest shipping is safe, beyond that I care little for what the French, Germans or the Saudis do or what happens to their shipping. Let them cry to the UN about doing something, the US will take care of US interests.

As to the question are people being too critical too fast, yes in my option, at least while Captain Richard Phillips is still at sea and still being hostage. I’m less interested in the politics of the matter than the safe return of this Captain. There will be plenty of time to count coup and make political hay on this matter, and the important thing now is the rescue of this crew member and what we do after that is accomplished.

That’s not the same thing as a free pass for his Obamaness, far from it. Call it a take on something Reagan once said, “Don’t trust and do verify” what he does about these events. If Obama fails at this test, which I hope he won’t as far as the rescue goes, then there all the fears of those who did not vote for Obama will be writ large.

There are other ways to deal with the problem

SteveLA (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 11:21PM EST (link)

Mike,

There are plenty of ways to deal with the problem of Piracy in this part of the world besides the US taking on the role (unpaid and unappreciated) of the World’s Policeman.

Arm US flag carriers
Travel in Convoys
Shoot first, ask question later

But solving the problem of Pirates in this part of the world when US national interests are weak at best is not something that I think is a good idea.

Actually, even "I" don't think Bush should have

mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 10:40PM EST (link)

done anything about the pirates, for the reasons Steve notes below.

I wouldn’t have batted an eyelash if he’d decided to bomb Somalia into ash just because it was a slow day in Washington, but as far as the pirates were concerned, they hadn’t really pushed my buttons on US sovereignty or gone after US shipping.

At this point, we should be sinking everything that we even remotely think is a “pirate ship” and bombing Somalia to ash. That launch should have lasted about 10 seconds after the Navy got to within gun range. Or SEAL range.

As much as I dislike Bush’s actions, he gets a pass from me on this. It’s Obama’s tar baby.

actually the pirates drive up the cost

Doc Holliday (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 10:47PM EST (link)

of the goods we buy. Somalia is hell on earth and they have violently attacked an American ally in Ethiopia. Somalia has had American blood on it’s hands since Black Hawk Down. I would love for our military to root out the pirate dens, destory their harbors and destroy any skiff on sight that heads towards a trading vessel.

Also, I think the Seals could easily end this standoff if thebama would let them. Just go in underwater and sink the dinghy. Will the pirates be shooting while they drown and we save the captain? Nothing is for sure, but cowardice will FOR SURE risk even more lives. Hell, the French stormed a yacht just the other day, one good guy died, the rest were saved and the pirates are dead or in custody. As long as this goes on, America haters accross the world are cheering at our decadent inaction.

Clinton learned that lesson, and it was a good one.

Going back into Somalia would be another “Tar Baby” for this country….fergetaboutit. I don’t see the compelling national interest outside of getting back one of our own here.

I’d rather see US Flag ships travel in convoy, or armed, or some other approach. Let the EU and the UN figure out what to do about the problem for their ships.

Looks like I’m turning Pitch Fork Pat Buchanan here….LOL.

Terrorist update, still no word from Nobama

Common_Cents (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 1:42PM EST (link)

April 11 (Bloomberg) — Somali pirates demanding ransom and safe passage as conditions for releasing the captain of a U.S.- flagged container ship plan to restart talks on his release, as two U.S. warships monitor the bandits off Africa’s east coast.

The captain of the Maersk Alabama, Richard Phillips, yesterday tried to escape from the lifeboat he’s sharing with four pirates in the Indian Ocean and was quickly recaptured, a member of the pirate gang said. The gang has “information” that the U.S. warships will stage a raid and repeated the pirates’ threat to kill Phillips if they did so, he said.

“Negotiations failed yesterday, but still there is another hope to begin again,” a man calling himself Da’ud, who identified himself as one of the pirates, said today by phone from the area of Eyl, Somalia. There isn’t a specific ransom amount the pirates are seeking, he said. Earlier, he said the captain was unharmed and the pirates “aren’t going to hurt anyone.”

What the heck is wrong with this administration, the last administration (I’ll admit to a way lesser degree), and the world in general that we can’t do something about this!?!

I feel like I’ve been misinterpreted on this issue before. My lefty heart bleeds not one drop for pirates. I agree with many of the other posters’ take on maritime law, and i think that these criminals should be dealt with by any means necessary.

I’m shocked to hear that ships are using fire hoses and things like that to fight them off. Anyone with more knowledge of this than me able to tell me why ships, or at very least their crews, aren’t armed?

Interesting point, US crew retaking ship saved Obama from his Tehran

Common_Cents (Diary) Saturday, April 11th at 5:33PM EST (link)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/somalia/5142032/Why-Somali-piracy-is-booming—by-former-hostage-victim.html

“The Maersk Alabama, which originally had 21 American sailors on board, shows how much potential there is for major disaster. US television networks are treating it as a tale of all-American heroism, focusing on how the ship’s crew managed first to take one of their attackers prisoner, and how Capt Phillips then selflessly volunteered for a hostage-swap. They could so easily, however, be reporting a tale of all-American tragedy. Had the pirates got the sailors onto the Somali mainland, it could have been the worst US hostage crisis since the storming of the American Embassy in 1979. There are, after all, plenty of Somalis who’d have been willing to pay the pirates good money for their catch – not least the hardline al shebab Islamist movement, whose alleged links to al Qaeda have seen them targeted by US missiles.

Such a crisis might, however, have proved a timely wake-up call, just as 9-11 was about Afghanistan. Somalia has now been 18 years without a government, and has slipped into warlordism and criminal violence unheard of anywhere else. As a bitter Somali joke puts it, the warlords only went into robbing foreigners at sea because there was nothing left to rob from their own people on land. ”

Had the US crew followed a passive response to the hijacking they may have been very valuable targets for al qaeda operating in Somalia. The crew retaking the ship may have saved Obama from his Tehran.

This is probably the next thing we hear about our Coward in Chief. “Spokesman, Robert Gibbs says Obama will give the displaced Somali fisherman no more than 444 days to release their foreign exchange guest.”

US ship reaches Kenya minus kidnapped captain

By ELIZABETH A. KENNEDY and KATHARINE HOURELD – 14 minutes ago

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP)

“They came from the stern of the ship and came on with hooks and ropes and were firing in the air when they got on board,” said ATM Reza, a father of one from Hartford, Connecticut, who said he was the first to see the pirates board Wednesday.

As the pirates shot in the air, Capt. Richard Phillips, 53, of Underhill, Vermont, told his crew to lock themselves in a cabin and surrendered himself to safeguard his men, crew members said. Phillips was still held hostage in an enclosed lifeboat Saturday by four pirates being closely watched by U.S. warships in an increasingly tense standoff.

“He saved our lives!” second mate Ken Quinn, of Bradenton, Florida, declared from the ship as it docked in the resort and port city of Mombasa. “He’s a hero.”

Reza said that he had led one of the pirates to the engine room, where he stabbed him in the hand with an ice pick and tied him up. Other sailors corroborated that story.

The crew did not elaborate Saturday but have told family members by phone that they took one pirate hostage before giving him up in the unfulfilled hope their captain would be released. Instead, the Somalis fled with Phillips to the lifeboat.”
