Time Magazine's Offensive "Green" Cover

These idiots really know how to stir the S-storm don't they? Having the audacity to use such a meaningful iconic photo as Joe Rosenthal's Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima to push this agenda is not what's shocking, having a moral compass is a charge seldom leveled against the MSM, but to blatantly disrespect the hero's who fought and died there... to quote Donald Mates, an Iwo Jima veteran, “It’s an absolute disgrace”

Iwo Jima Veterans Blast Time's 'Special Environmental Issue' Cover
For only the second time in 85 years, Time magazine abandoned the traditional red border it uses on its cover. The occasion – to push more global warming alarmism.
The cover of the April 21 issue of Time took the famous Iwo Jima photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the Marines raising the American flag and replaced the flag with a tree. The cover story by Bryan Walsh calls green “the new red, white and blue.”
Donald Mates, an Iwo Jima veteran, told the Business & Media Institute on April 17 that using that photograph for that cause was a “disgrace.”
“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Mates said. “Whoever did it is going to hell. That’s a mortal sin. God forbid he runs into a Marine that was an Iwo Jima survivor.”
Mates also said making the comparison of World War II to global warming was erroneous and disrespectful.
“The second world war we knew was there,” Mates said. “There’s a big discussion. Some say there is global warming, some say there isn’t. And to stick a tree in place of a flag on the Iwo Jima picture is just sacrilegious.”
According to the American Veterans Center (AVC), Mates served in the 3rd Marine Division and fought in the battle of Iwo Jima, landing on Feb. 24, 1945.
“A few days later, Mates’ eight-man patrol came under heavy assault from Japanese forces,” Tim Holbert, a spokesman for the AVC, said. “During fierce-hand-to-hand combat, Mates watched as his friend and fellow Marine, Jimmy Trimble, was killed in front of his eyes. Mates was severely wounded, and underwent repeated operations for shrapnel removal for over 30 years.”
Being Good Stewards of the Earth is one thing... and I applaud everyone who does their part. But comparing the two; fighting climate change and fighting WWII is beyond ludicrous!
This cover, much like the magazine it wraps itself around is good for absolutely nothing that I can think of save kitty box liner or fish wrap like so many pieces of the New York Times!
...this winner had this to say (from the link in the OP)
Time managing editor Richard Stengel appeared on MSNBC April 17 and said the United States needed to make a major effort to fight climate change, and that the cover’s purpose was to liken global warming to World War II.

just did a commercial together that was nauseating to see.....what is wrong with Newt....well I mean he is going to make big bank of this ponzi scheme but doing a commercial with Nancy (love Assad) Pelosi? sick sick sick!

I was wondering how they managed to get them together on the same couch.
Its becoming obvious that Newt's primary allegiance is Newt.

It grounded me nicely after seeing Michael Brown squirm. It was also fun to see Colmes trying to defend attending Farrakhan sponsored events.

It always struck me as one of the epitomes of the eating press. Its always either deliberately manipulated its audience or been easily manipulated itself.

You decide.
But whatever, according to the MSM the threat of Terrorism is overhyped, Saddam’s threat to the US was overhyped, the need for border security is overhyped but this Global Warming is REAL!!!!
I had a lot of respect for Mr. Stegeman. He was one of the hardest working men I ever knew, and he told me about being just off of the camera when he watched the flag being raised there. His son told me how others said the experience changed him from a happy go lucky kid into a man whose only solace was sunup to sundown work day in and day out. How dare Time do this! But for the grace of God.

Time is in every grocery store checkout isle. The cover is all that matters to influence people, the substance or accuracy of what's inside is irrelevant.
This cover is one of the best symbols of liberalism I have ever seen. They want to replace the patriotism and the flag with internationalism and tree-worship.
This has nothing to do with liberalism.
Its a stupid, petty, disrespectful attempt to sell magazine.
Blood was spilled on that sacred island by liberals and conservatives.
Americans all.
modern liberalism, which incidently has no relation to classical liberalism.
The "liberals" who fought on Iwo have nothing in common with today's Democratic left. There would be no place in today's Democratic Party for Truman, JFK, or most of the prominent Dems of the 40's & 50's.

My experience is different.
I'm from a family liberals. At one point, my grandmother had 5 boys in the service during WWII. They spilled blood and came back with medals.
Between them and their friends, I knew about 20 or 30 guys like that. Blue collar. Union guys. Catholic, family centered guys.
They revere FDR (most liberal president ever?) and JFK.
The surviving ones all vote democratic. They all want universal health care. They all don't thing tax breaks for the rich is a good idea. They all have serious questions about Iraq.
I don't agree with them, but I can't change their minds.
Modern liberals are incapable of rational thought. They put two and two together and feel the answer should be fourteen. Or nine. They want! and they feel!, but they don't think. They are simply creatures of habit, pulling the "D" lever.

That dealing with the climate is the equivalent of war.
Not only do they confuse 'CO2' with 'pollution', they confuse
subtle and nearly unmeasurable changes in weather patterns as a crisis and in their shallow hubris think that we can 'beat' the climate.
What utter fools.
how to win the war against their own bandwagon jumping stupidity and lemming like herd instincts.
The more I learn the more I am convinced that AGW is a total fraud. CO2 is barely even a greenhouse gas, it's effects on warming are less than 1/10 a percent of that of water vapor, and far less even than the effect of methane.
Why do the alarmists concentrate on this gas? Simple, it is the byproduct of a vibrant, prosperous, free market, global economy.
THEY DON'T LIKE THOSE THINGS!

to the entire world. "Man made" global warming is the biggest hoax and financial ripoff in history. For Time to lump the two together is an insult to WWII veterans and their families who sacrificed everything for our freedom. It is obvious that the editorial staff at Time never possessed a moral compass to begin with or an education in history. It is becoming clear that the "green movement" is taking on more of the characteristics of a fanatical religious cult than the objective methodology of science.
I think it's a tad over-sensitive to really be offended by this. I don't trivialize what those Marines saw at Iwo Jima, and I certainly respect those Marines more than most anyone alive today. Yet I still can’t help but feel they are not immune from over-sensitivity. I’ve seen many other people use that imagery for their own cause or for humor, and I can’t say I remember any such outrage. Perhaps it is the audience that Time is able to reach (honestly who is reading it?!?).
I’m pretty sure the Daily Show has used the Iwo Jima memorial in a parody. Robot Chicken: More blood, more chocolate (WARNING: crude humor) used the image 1 minute prior to the end of the show, and I thought it was absolutely hysterical.
Maybe it’s just a sensitivity thing? I actually think blasphemy can be funny sometimes, and I’m one of those crazies that goes to church every week and confession once a month.
As much as I think the global warming movement is led by socialists and as much as the followers are dupes, I don’t see someone using the imagery as a means of conveying the idea that they think that they are fighting a war too (no matter how lame the war may be, and as long as it doesn’t contradict what those Marines fought for [ie replacing the American flag with the Japanese flag, etc]) to be offensive. Silly? Perhaps. Taking itself way too seriously? Yes, definitely.
Didn’t someone here at RedState post an image of a White flag being raised as a means of mocking Murtha or was that somewhere else? I thought it was appropriate then.
"Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. I'm a whale biologist."
I agree that we should not be outraged but we should at least expose it for what it is...DISRESPECTFUL. In the overall context of pushing an agenda, Time Mag was disrespectful to the sacrifice of the Marines who fought there. There is no humor being used in this cover, it's purpose is to pull on your patriotism and heartstrings, something Time Mag wouldn't do for the actual war being fought today that so many of our brothers and children are fighting. It's the comparison that is objectionable.

conform and celebrate diversity....or else!!!
I suppose it's a perspective thing.
I just don't see any obvious intent to downplay the Marines sacrifice. I see an attempt to upplay the green's cause. I don't call that disrespect. Actually it's probably even closer to respect even if it is ludicrous (kind of in the same way imitation is the sincerest form of flattery). Now if someone could supply me with a quote form a Time magazine editor saying "Those Marines didn't fight anything tougher than what the environmentalists today are fighting" then I'd saying the exact same things as Mates. I just don't see that intent though.
"Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. I'm a whale biologist."
1) Bringing this to the RS communities attention is completely legitimate. Your comment's tone smacks of "get over it", "it's no big deal", or "it's all in fun"... If that's your option your welcome to it - I could care less! But don't try and insulate that it's not worthy of discussion or that somehow I or We should have let the story pass and kept quite.
2) You do not get to decide at what point veterans are or aren't offended by anything.
and a bonus - Don't point to other bad behavior to somehow excuse this bad behavior - Thanks!

"You do not get to decide at what point veterans are or aren't offended by anything."
What kind of statement is that? I don't get to decide when anybody is offended by anything. That still doesn't mean I can't assess when someone might be overreacting. Or are you playing the liberal game of saying "He's a vet/victim/whatever so he's immune from your analysis"? (note: I said analysis since I'm not critisizing those particular vets. I'm simply questioning the reasonableness of their outrage).
"Bringing this to the RS communities attention is completely legitimate."
I didn't say it wasn't. I said it's a little over the top to be outraged by it. I didn't say "get over it", "it's no big deal", or "it's all in fun"... I said put it in perspective. The AGW movement is dumb. Comparing it to the Pacific Theater is dumb. But I don't see a lack of respect. I see someone trying to make their "cause" way more important than it really is.
"But don't try and insulate that it's not worthy of discussion or that somehow I or We should have let the story pass and kept quite." Where did I say that!?! I said it might be a bit much to be outraged by it. I didn't "insulate" anything!
"I'm really beginning to tire of conservatives using the liberal tactic of accusing one of "Outrage" simply for calling attention to something they don't agree with"
So my analysis of
“It’s an absolute disgrace,” Mates said. “Whoever did it is going to hell. That’s a mortal sin. God forbid he runs into a Marine that was an Iwo Jima survivor.”
...
And to stick a tree in place of a flag on the Iwo Jima picture is just sacrilegious.”
is way off? Fine then. if it isn't "outrage", then what is it? I'm don't have a great vocab. Why don't you supply me with a word that works.
"Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. I'm a whale biologist."
he can come over and watch Thin Red Line with me. I haven't been that outraged (yes, I was outraged) in a long time. That movie sucks.
"Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. I'm a whale biologist."
My friends and I went to see The Thin Red Suck when it came out.
OMG! it was easily the worst movie I have ever seen, bar none.
Endless shots of the jungle mixed with fatuous moralizing and crap house philosophy.
And hordes of Japanese soldiers simply surrendering when fired upon!!??!

your sense of humor is mistaken.
If I really think something is blasphemy, I don't find it funny. At all.
Lots of things I don't think are blasphamy other people do.
I don't think that YMCA Jesus photo was blasphamy but I'm sure some people do. I thought it was funny. I don't think Piss Christ is funny at all though. I do think that is blasphamy.
No I don't define blasphamy based on my sense of humor, but the two follow a similar pattern. And I also don't expect other people to accept my beliefs so when I do see something like Family Guy or South Park actually being blasphemous (sometimes I think they are), it doesn't mean I think the whole joke isn't funny. It just means I think their sometimes wrong.
"Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em. I'm a whale biologist."
Nobody mistakes Robot Chicken for news. Nobody mistakes, say, South Park for news. Some silly Democrats mistake the Daily Show for news, but then again, they're silly Democrats.
Time at least pretends to be news. If they want to be treated like they're news, they need to act like it.

This post goes into the realm of hypersensitivity. TIME didn't insult any troops. They're comparing the (wrong) fight against climate change with WWII. It's not like they claim U.S. Marines were butchers like coal burning plants are to the environment.
Iwo Jima is an icon. It's part of American culture. Remixing that culture is in America's DNA.
Leave the hypersensitivity to Left wing identity ideologues.

How else do we get people's minds off the existential threat posed to them by Muslim extremists? How else do we get them not to think about the implications of pulling out of Iraq? How else do we convince them to give up their property?
If any chickens are coming home to roost, it will be because so many Americans are idiots who can't see what is coming around the bend.
I'm seriously thinking of moving to the mountains. It's madness. If we shut down all televisions for one month, this nation would renew itself and get its brains back.

Not sure where to put my rant, so I'll stick it in this comment section...
I'm sure it was in response to Ben Stein's movie coming out, but Letterman had "climate change expert John P. Holdren" on his show Thursday night. I watched it with absolute awe. How can seemingly educated people fall for this stuff?
Holdren said that the "very few skeptics out there were not educated on the subject, and most of them are coming around anyway" (paraphrased)
Holdren said that you can't attribute single weather events to global warming--err, excuse me, "climate change", but you CAN attribute the frequency and severity of the storms to it. (like the increase of hurricanes since Katrina....ooh wait, that didn't happen...)
Dave kept going back to how the oil companies are "lying" about what they're doing (or not doing) to fix this, and of course, ripping Bush for not doing something about it and magically changing the temperature of the Earth during his time in office (which is but a small percentage of the time (8 yrs) that they claim this has been happening (100 yrs or so)--but if you listen to them, Bush himself is shooting nukes into the ozone).
What baffles me is that they were pointing to carbon dioxide as the problem. Isn't this a natural gas that is a vital part of our climate? Don't we exhale CO2? And if the increase in emissions that we're putting out is the problem, why are the libs not doing away with energy-consuming mansions and private planes, etc.?? Doesn't Letterman himself commute a good distance to work each day?
Dave seems to want the government to take control of this, and we all know what that means....big govt regulating industries they know absolutely about while increasing taxes to pay for programs to supposedly fix it.
And finally, hasn't the average temperature decreased over the last decade?
his betters tell him. You hit the nail on the head when you wonder about CO2.
It is not even a serious contender as a greenhouse gas. Why do they obsess over it?
Because it is the byproduct of a healthy, prosperous, growing, capitalist economy. Something they hate.
