The McCain Blog Call

By Erick Posted in Comments (27) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

John McCain had a blogger call this morning. I asked him about siding with Tom Coburn and an executive order on earmarks. He said he agreed with both.

Senator McCain said he absolutely would side with Tom Coburn on the need for an investigation into how Don Young's earmark get back in legislation after Congress had voted to strip it.

Likewise, he also said he would support the President using an executive order to knock out the earmarks dropped into the appropriations bills.

There were lots of congratulations on the phone call, even from those who aren't necessarily McCain fans. McCain is really fired up now. He points out, in response to a question from Jennifer Rubin, that he did win independents and Republicans in New Hampshire.

On his plan for Michigan, McCain says he's going in again to get independents and Republicans. He says he does not know what Romney's message will be, but his will be lower taxes for Michigan and job retraining and education to take care of displaced workers. He says he wants to go to community colleges to meet local needs for jobs. McCain says the present federal policies were established in the fifties and don't work anymore. McCain also says we need to implement the new CAFE standards because they've become law.

McCain also says he'd like to see Joe Lieberman back on the trail. He thinks Joe will go to Michigan Monday to campaign with him. He also says money is coming in online well now.

Lastly, John McCain says he likes Mike Huckabee, though they disagree on issues. He's also not going to question whether or not Huckabee is a conservative. He thinks that they could have a respectful debate on the issues.

Somebody, by the way, asked about McCain's VP choices. He mentioned Phil Gramm as the type of guy, though not necessarily Gramm himself. I was left wondering -- could we see a McCain Lieberman ticket?

On McCain-Lieberman.... by Jeff Emanuel

...I hope not. While Lieberman has been a steadfast ally on the GWOT, he is a Liberal Democrat in all but the war issue and name.

And yes, that's hyperbole.

What we need in a leader is to tell us not what we want to hear, but what we need to hear.

==== 13 ====

....aside from the fact that CAFE standards are another big government liberal scheme to regulate business....how can he think that this would play well in the home of our domestic car industry?

Also, McCain needs to permanently drop the words "global warming" and "climate change" from his campaign....and reign in morons like liberal Republican ex-congressmen like Charlie Bass who tell us that McCain's key issues are "climate change and campaign finance reform".

Romney's true skills by The Insider

What really impressed me about Mitt Romney, is that he is a no none sense executive. When Mitt snaps his fingers and gives orders to his subordinates, "he is deadly serious". Unlike the "Bush Administration", when Romney sets out his daily orders, he will make sure his lower level officials, comply and are efficiently executing Romney policies.

If they do not comply, they will be given the boot, and relieved of their duties. Where as the Bush Administration, just puts up with this nonsense, from clowns like Don Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, Former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, among others.

This is the displine and skill we can expect from the Romney Administration, when Willard Mitt Romney, is Elected as our 44th President of the United States of America.

Note: Mineta was a hold over from the Clinton Administration.

The ability of the Primary Voters to Nominate such a highly intelligent and displined & skilled candidate, will prove deadly, against the longly awaited Re-Match against the Clintons, which I have so long Lusted for. It will be so sweet to run against Hillary Clinton. Her defeat will make me cry in pure joy.

The Clintons have been 4-0 so far, but this time will be different. The 5th time will finally be the charm ! As Romney will be our hero, he will be known to "historians", as "the man that finally gave the Republican Party it's longly awaited desire to BEAT THE CLINTONS".

We will finally be able to say, "ok Bill and Hillary, you ran in Arkansas both times and won, you defeated us both times in the Presidential Races, BUT NOT THIS TIME YOUR REIGN OF TERROR IS GOING DOWN IN DEFEAT !

No one can say the Democrats are better on the Economy anymore, once Romney, with his solid Business Skills, Leads our country. We will have history to back up the obvious.

That being how Mitt's Business Skills, allowed him to turn a $ 360 million dollor deficit, created by POOR Management, of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, into a $ 100 million dollor profit.

I say anyone who can turn a $ 360 million dollor deficit around, much less into a $ 100 Million dollor Profit, is a shrewd businessman. So I am for these reasons, voting for Mitt Romney.

Do it again and you're gone; also, I expect your next post to be a response to this one indicating that you've seen this instruction from a site moderator, that you understand it, and that you'll comply with it.

Don't do something unexpected.

I think I'm missing a link somewhere in there.

The Gramm comment is interest because he has said elsewhere that he wants a VP who knows economic issues more than he does. Combined with this comment, it seems he wants a VP who knows economic issues AND is conservative on economic issues. That's reassuring.

I was thinking the same thing. Gramm? Whooo-hoooo! McCain/Gramm, that's a ticket I would LOVE. McCain/Lieberman? I'd rather have McCain/Huckabee.

What with the unchecked economic policy setting power of the vice president...oh wait.... The veep has no power whatsoever outside of a tiebreaking vote in the senate. I totally forgot.

I'm not sure why people think that a VP selection is some sort of balance to a candidate. Look how well it worked for algore and ketchup guy.

He may be in synch with the GOP on the WAMI, but he's still a liberal Democrat who's not technically a Democrat but still caucuses with them.

Not concerned. by MOlsen6

I think we are a long way from that. I suspect a Christian Conservative or a governor from a mid-western state might work better.

Lindsey Graham was *with* him during the call, and has gone with him on at least one trip to Iraq, as he talked about in the call. Lieberman's no longer his biggest budy in the Senate.

McCain madness by G. Moore

I think it's a bit premature to seriously consider McCain as the GOP nominee. Right now, he's getting the anti-Romney/ liberal GOP/"Independent" vote.

McCain doesn't have a prayer of becoming the GOP nominee, and his chances of becoming president are next to zero. He's a Dem in GOP clothing.

If he's the nominee, Conservatives will stay home and allow the Dem nominee to walk into the White House. Trust me.

Really? by MOlsen6

You would rather see Hillary appoint an entire new generation of liberal activist judges rather than see 4 years of McCain? You would rather she set immigration policy? How about Iraq policy? Hmmmmm. Might want to think that one over.

MOlsen6

Huh? by G. Moore

You're making a joke, right?

Given McCain's record, what in heaven's name makes you think he will not do the same things Hillary would do?

The only difference between McCain and Hillary would be that she would not be as foul-mouthed and arrogant.

McCain REALLY is a Democrat, and all you need do is look at his record.

Wake up, please.

Umm, NO. by MOlsen6

Nope. I'm not making a joke. McCain is *not* a Democrat. Sorry. I don't care if you disagree.

McCain/Democrat by G. Moore

This has nothing to do with agreeing or disagreeing. Look at the facts. If he looks like a Democrat and if he walks like a Democrat, then I'd say he is a Democrat.

Only a Democrat could team up with the likes of Russ Feingold (about as left as they come) on McCain-Feingold, which, incidentally, restricts free speech. And McCain's stand on illegal immigration comes right out of the Democratic playbook.

Gandolphxx, in a related blog on this site, does an elegant job of reviewing McCain’s record:

-- McCain against the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and 2003.

-- McCain for McCain-Feingold and limiting free speech.

-- McCain for human embryo stem cell research.

-- McCain thinks pharmaceutical companies are bad guys - voted for Sarbanes-Oxley that is hurting small business.

-- McCain is against repealing the death tax.

-- McCain supports forced government regulation of greenhouse gas emissions.

-- McCain voted against drilling in Anwar.

-- McCain would raise social security taxes.

-- McCain would allow invaders [illegal immigrants] to stay indefinitely after [haha] paying a fine, BUT don't you dare call it amnesty!

-- McCain would rather thousands [millions with a nuke] of Americans die than pour water up a terrorists nose for thirty seconds - something all SEALS go through as part of their training.

-- McCain thinks being chummy and cooperating with Ted Kennedy is cool. Perhaps Ted can provide a list of Supreme nominees.

Now, MOIsen6, are you going to continue to insist that McCain is not a Democrat? Face facts, and if you continue to maintain that he's a Republican, then prove it.

P.S. Are you sure you're not kidding?

Give me a break. by mbecker908

I take second place to no one in my disdain for McCain. But, he's no Democrat. He represents the views of McCain. He is his party.

I share your contempt by The Insider

McCain is going to win the "New Liberal Republican Party" nomination most likely. I say keep taking those funny pills so you can retain your self respect. Its too bad Republicans are incapable of picking Conservative nominees.

I seriously wonder these days looking at last nights returns, if McCain or Rudy get the the nomination, if the Christians will boycott McCain like they did last night. If they do the same thing they did last night. We will not be able to win even against Hillary. We must get a large portion of the Christian or we will come up short.

Free speech ? by The Insider

You will all be wishing you had never nominated John McCaain when Gitmo is closed, and your wishing the Bush Administration was back. That is how liberal McCain is and you all know it. I say your all pathetic for hating McCain then loving him all of the sudden just because he won last night. The words
"irrational voter" are too kind for you followers.

You will regret your decision with a few months after McCain is sworn into office.

Seriously.

Now you have to email the Directors and tell them that you're ready to stop threadjacking before you can post here again.

Interesting by shiznitobam_allstars

The guy who said he would like to see a government wage supplement for people who lose their jobs to foreign competition is not going to questions the hucksters conservatism. Good for him, at least he's not deluded into thinking of himself as conservative.

Sounds a lot like that call was a clear shot across the bow to conservatives.

We were warned: John is more than happy to win using liberal Republicans and "independents" (read: Democrats).

That's the John McCain Presidency Plan; ABC: Anyone But Conservatives.

He "agreed" on earmarks. Right. Just like he has "agreed" we need border enforcement first?

McCain is the most electable R in the current climate. He's no Ronald Reagan that is for sure. But, frankly, none of them are, not even FDT. And I am confident that a President McCain would backstab the conservative base more than once. But he will not backstab the conservative base every single day, which is what a President Hillary would do (and then top it off with a sharp stick in the eye). I know that this is not a rousting defense and I am a bit sad even writing this. I wish there was a person with the eloquence of Obama speaking on our side talking about the need for "change" of government to empower individuals over the collective, the need for "change" in the Middle East in order to win the GWOT, the need for "change" in the culture to foster individual responsibility instead of victimhood. This person does not exist in 2008. We are left with what we have. For all his demerits, I believe McCain has the most ability to attract non-Republicans into voting for him, which is what we R's are going to need in order to hold on to the WH.

Tim Pawlenty. Here what he brings to the ticket:

1. Executive Experience- A must for a McCain VP as given his age, voters need to assured if something happened to him The VP could lead the country.
2. As a baptist, he could help with amending bridges (something that Pawlenty has literal experience with) with McCain and SOcons.
3. Youth- If McCain nominated an old guy to the post, the Dums could pull out out the '96 playbook of a couple old guys who do not get it.
4. Makes MN a battle ground- He did narrowly win reelection in this dark blue state in a very blue year. Could also play well in WI.
