Sen. Tom Coburn threatens to demand reading of Reid’s “health care” bill on the Senate floor

DrudgeReport has just posted a link to a Washington Times article about Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R. OK) threat to demand, according to the Senate rules, that Sen. Harry Reid’s so-called “health care” bill be read in its entirety on the Senate floor. The article estimates it would take a minimum of 34.5 hours to read the monstrosity straight through. Moreover, the Senate rules also allow any Senator to demand that any Senate bill be read THREE times.

What’s even more interesting is that Senate Rule XIV (paragraph 2) states that every bill and joint resolution “shall receive three readings prior to its passage.”

“Upon demand of a senator, these readings shall be on three different legislative days,” the rules say.

Click here for the Washington Times article.

I just called Sen. Coburn’s DC office (202-224-5754) explaining I’m a Republican Party precinct committeeman in Arizona and told his staff I wanted to thank Sen. Coburn for his courage, ask him to not give in to pressure and follow through with his threat to demand the reading of the bill on the Senate floor and also ask that he demand the bill be read THREE times according to the Senate rules.

I hope you’ll have the time and inclination to call Sen. Coburn, too.

Thank you.

The “Big Tent” analogy isn’t the correct one…the correct one is a MAGNET…we need to be a MAGNET that draws these independents in who are sick and tired of what’s going on in WashingtonFred Thompson

Hell, I will fly to Washington on my own nickel and read it to the full Senate…..

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Or better yet...

Have 2000 people lined up and let each one come up to the Senate floor and read one page…..that should take a few weeks….
And then DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN….

Read every bill in detail fro 3 more years…..it is all JUNK, JUNK I tell you.

What happens though if the Senate President ignores the request

…fails to recognize Coburn, proceeding as though he had not spoken, and the parliamentarian backs the SP. Wouldn’t it then take a 2/3rds vote to overrule the chair? And couldn’t they pull the same kind of stunt with other rulings too regarding delay tactics?

(Obviously you’d need 51 Senators to go along with this, but if 51 are willing, what would stop them?)

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

Let's Hope The Dems Actually Go That Route

I don’t think such abuses of powers would play well even Dem-leaning voters, let alone Independents.

Let the Dems p*** all over the Constitution and their own rules in passing this – it’ll be more grist for the mill.

First, they need to read this letter:.....this new rule will increase federal spending by $78 billion over the 2010–2019 period.

The New Rule Governing Medicare’s Payments to Physicians
On October 30, 2009, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services promulgated a final rule, “Payment Policies Under the Physician Fee Schedule and Other Revisions to Part B for CY 2010.” 1 That rule removes physician-administered (P-A) drugs from the
calculation of the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula, which determines the updates to payment rates for physicians’ services. Removal of P-A drugs from the SGR will increase Medicare’s spending for fee-for-service physicians’ services and the Medicare
Advantage (MA) program, as well as the Department of Defense’s outlays for the TRICARE program. Because beneficiaries enrolled in Part B of Medicare pay premiums that offset about 25 percent of the costs of their benefits, premium income will rise to offset part of the added costs. On net, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that this new rule will increase federal spending by $78 billion over the 2010–2019 period.

He's backing down....

Stephen Halsey (Diary) Thursday, November 19th at 10:47PM EST (link)

Check out Foxnews.com and it says it’s because of push-back from his own party. No doubt the Maine twins and I bet McGraham too providing the pushback from the RINO wing.

I called Sen. Coburn’s office today to lend support to his effort and let him know that people in Virginia support the effort to read the bill on the floor….at least a pile of people I know.

The whole mood really turned negative today with DeMint telling Beck on his radio show that he thinks it’ll probably pass. Time to get to work, call your Senate critters tomorrow……all day long. I simply can’t believe Senators like Lincoln, Baye, Landreaux, and even Webb and Warner here in Virginia would commit career suicide by voting for this thing. Are they really that tone deaf that they did not get the message two weeks ago!?!?
