I have strolled down many roads this primary season. I have been intrigued by many of the candidates, some of who have had their rise and fall. They all have excellent attributes in one way or another that can attract a conservative voter. Even the former speaker who reminds me of the old “E.F. Hutton” commercials brought me on board for awhile despite his couching liaisons. However, the road I currently find myself on once again is the road with Governor Perry. I know that I am solidly on this road now. I know this because this is the first time my wallet has opened this primary season.
Now the question you may be asking yourself is why would I go back down this road with a candidate who registers at 8% in my own state. My answer: I am not an “American Idol” type of voter and frankly I believe most voters are becoming less so. Our great country is in trouble and at a major crossroads. The majority of Americans instinctively know this. I am more interested in what a candidate is saying, not how he is saying it. Governor Perry brings to the table a strong conservative record, bold ideas, and policy positions. I won’t go into detail here since it has been addressed so well in previous posts. All I want to do is share the fact that I have followed this race daily for quite awhile and have performed my own research/vetting process.
As stated above, I have been down some differing roads during this primary process. In fact, many of us out there have done so. Are there really that many folks out there that are so wishy-washy? The answer to this question is an emphatic NO! I beleive as many others do, that this may be our last chance to pull our country back from the brink and “right” its course. I like many others take that charge very seriously and my vote accordingly. Together we must take this historic opportunity and get it right.
I have weighed the pros and cons of all of the candidates. As we all know, they all have flaws. However, there is one who has led as the governor of a state the last ten years primarily as a consistent conservative. He is also one that says what he means and means what he says. Make no mistake, that is a very important attribute in a leader. It was one of the things I admired most about President Bush. The only problem was I didn’t always agree with what President Bush was saying. With Governor Perry I view getting the best of both worlds. Present are all of the outstanding leadership qualities of President Bush packaged into a true consistent conservative. By the way, are you all like me and very pleased that the phrase that pays “compassionate conservative” has now and rightly so, been replaced with the qualifying “consistent conservative”?
To use the old adage, Governor Perry is the candidate I would most like to have a beer with just like President Bush was. However, while having our beers, Governor Perry and I would be talking about how government should stop being looked to for solving our problems. Instead, we would be conversing about how to get government to be less intrusive in our lives. I have noticed that, when folks drink they tend to want to talk about solving the world’s problems. In this case Governor Perry and I would be talking about solving our great country’s problems and agreeing about how to do that probably 85- 90% of the time. With President Bush that entire conversation probably would not even take place. (Yes, I know he does not drink. That is not the point.)
Well for what it is worth, this is why I am now back on the road with Governor Perry. However, this time it is not a stroll. This time it is a pedal to the metal ride in a Mustang 5.0 drive to fix this country. This will probably be the best chance in my lifetime to really help “Right” this Country. I for one do not want to keep veering to the left. It won’t be an easy task. We may even have to take drastic measures like shoot a tire on the right side while doing 65mph to get the movement back in that “right” direction. It may shock us at first. I will definitely be bumpy. But it will begin taking us in the direction, not that we want to go but where we need to go.
I have asked myself which of these candidate is the one that is talking about such possible drastic measures and seems to have the guts to try to carry them through? To me it is the same one who called Social Security what it really is and did not back away from his remark when challenged on it. Even today he still refers to it accurately as a “Ponzi” scheme . Therefore, in the great state of South Carolina, on January 21st, 2012 I will be voting for Governor Perry.
In closing, as my father used to say in his deep theatrical voice, “and that, will do it”.

BigGator5 (Diary) Thursday, December 15th at 12:05PM EST (link)Kudos to you. You have to live with your primary vote. In that election, vote your conscience. I am personally going to vote Newt Gingrich in the primary here in Florida.
However whoever gets the nomination, I will vote for them over Obama. I hope you join me in doing the same.

I have
trevorb (Diary) Saturday, December 17th at 12:17AM EST (link)not decided on who I’m going to support. I’ve crossed Romney and Paul completely off my list and for all intents and purposes, Bachmann is off as well.
I think Perry’s been a good governor, but I have my reservations on choosing him as our nominee. That being said, he’d be a far better choice than who we currently have.
Perry is the most qualified, by far
nancysabet Sunday, December 18th at 6:10PM EST (link)that is why I am voting for him. Getting into the race late has hurt Perry. Unlike Romney, he hasn’t had 5 years of repeating his talking points over and over. He is the most qualified person running in this race. He has 11 years of executive governing experience. He has led Texas in creating the majority of jobs created in the entire US in the last two years. He is the only candidate to serve in the military except for Dr. Paul who served as a Doctor. He has experience dealing with the border issues and is very strong on illegal immigration. Under his watch, Texas has passed picture voter id and no drivers liscenses for illegal aliens. His convictions are genuine and his instincts are conservative.
Bravo, well done....

But so far as Perry goes, I have to agree.
1. He makes the most sense and is small Government.
2. I’d trust him with my life if it came to it.
3. Uhh..it was um …
The choice is actually pretty simple
gator_hoo (Diary) Sunday, December 18th at 12:53AM EST (link)Who is the one candidate that the Establishment and the Dems have lined up to knock off? Perry. Perry helped them to some extent, but that happens with every candidate. Perry is the only cabdidate that scares the folks who need to be scared. and that is why he is my pick.
I still think the thing that has hurt him the most is the number of Palin supporters who think he kept Sarah out of the race. I don’t dislike Newt, but it is an odd season when he is somehow deigned the tea party candidate.
Agree!!
Benta_Nordstrom Sunday, December 18th at 1:42AM EST (link)A lukewarm republican candidate will mean four more years for Obama!!
Perry is the best option we have! The other ” top” candidates are just not as trustworthy on conservative issues.
Newt Gingrich is not as conservative as one would hope for. Also….. after the stance Republicans took against Clinton (and rightly so) because of his actions… for us to go ahead and nominate someone with a “messy personal life” is sending a double message too. However, he would be better than Romney!

jrfromdallas Sunday, December 18th at 9:24AM EST (link)The Tea Party/so called small government Republicans like Coulter, Haley and organizations that are supposed to promote Conservative values like National Review. I am a Perry guy all the way based on his record and his beliefs and his vision. When he first got in the race people attacked his Conservative credentials and over inflated his early stumbles for the purpose of supporting either someone unqualified (Cain) to someone who’s values are totally against Conservatives moral values (Gingrich/marrying two mistresses shows poor judgement) to now a guy that has no conservative core principles (Romney). I will support him if he’s the nominee BUT we as Conservatives need to rally around OUR candidate and help elect the person with a vision that most resembles ours. I don’t want to hear people tell me that Perry couldn’t win a face off with Obama or that he couldn’t debate Obama..that is hogwash and if we keep going in the direction that we are going then ANYONE could beat Obama if people realize that a change is needed. Sarah Palin if she has any guts will come out endorse Perry because of his record. If she doesn’t then I’m not interested in anything else she’s selling. It is time to get off the sidelines people and get in the game. We have been waiting for this election since the last one and we need to get this one right.
jrfromdallas, don't expect Sarah Palin
retire05 Sunday, December 18th at 9:59AM EST (link)to come out and endorse Rick Perry. I understand that she was pretty hot under the collar because Rick did not call her and discuss entering the primary with her.
I lost interest in Palin a long time ago. In 2010, I traveled from central Texas to D.C. to see her at the Restore Honor/Glen Beck rally on a darn bus, no less. At that time, I was still pretty impressed with Palin, thinking she represented all that was “average” America. Since then, I have had a change of mind because I think Palin has gotten heady with her fame.
A couple of things turned me off on her: in Iowa, she bashed Texas saying we had a weak governor and a weak form of government. Now, I am like Marcus Luttrell in that there are certain things you don’t do to me; you don’t talk bad about my mama, and you don’t talk bad about my state. Then, as Palin was yanking everyone’s chain about getting into the primary, she defended Bachmann in Bachmann’s lies about the Gardasil issue, when Palin herself, had signed legislation that provided the vaccination to EVERY girl in Alaska, on the national tax payer dime. Also, Palin’s strong connection to Bapoal Coal, Greta Van Sustern’s tory lawyer husband, turned me off completely.
If you are going to talk the talk (as Palin seemed to want to do during that time) you need to walk the walk (which she was unwilling to do).
My guess is Palin’s true colors will come through and she will either endorse Gingrich or Romney.
Supporting Perry is a tough call for us Texans. If he wins, we will get Dewhurst as Governor, and will have to tolerate him for at least two years before we can replace him with a solid conservative. If Dewhurst takes KBH’s seat, then we wind up with Strauss and that is an equal nightmare. But Perry losing is NOT an option. We must have a POTUS that understands the ramifications of Obama’s Arab Spring (that is rapidly turning into the Arab Nightmare) as well as understanding that to turn this nation around economically requires energy independence from ME nations.
A question for all Newt supporters: why is he no longer touting his “Drill here, drill now” plan? It is just one of those “great” ideas that popped into his head and now he has moved on to other “great” ideas that have no staying power?

texashistorian (Diary) Sunday, December 18th at 2:15PM EST (link)I am in CenTex as well, and I happen to agree with you on Palin. On a personal level she is a great lady- my aunt and uncle who lived 35 years in Wasilla know both Sarah and Todd and their families- but politically she is a something disappointing to me.
Now, as for Dewhurst, I would rather have him in the governor job than in the Senate where he wants to go. Strauss I agree with you on as well. In an ideal Texas world, Perry becomes POTUS, Dewhurst governor (the house and senate can keep him honest we hope), Cruz as our senator, and then we’ll see . . .
The study of history is a powerful antidote to contemporary arrogance. It is humbling to discover how many of our glib assumptions, which seem to us novel and plausible, have been tested before, not once but many times and in innumerable guises; and discovered to be, at great human cost, wholly false.

Wayne (Diary) Monday, December 19th at 9:05AM EST (link)the Internet has played such an important role to stay informed and sidestepping the national media’s influence. Without which Perry would have been gone long ago.
As Romney continues to lose favor with the core conservative and independents and Newt’s momentum slows, I believe Perry now has a chance to succeed in surging to the top again and securing the nomination.
That said, we should not forget that the Republican Party does not want Perry. I believe they will do whatever is necessary to minimize him to the end.

I was anti-Perry
citizenkh (Diary) Monday, December 19th at 9:37AM EST (link)in May of this year, but all that changed when a close friend told me that Perry was going to run, and my friend would back him.
That caused me to pause and begin asking questions of business associates in Texas. 100% of those small businessmen were solidly in Perry’s camp, if he would announce.
Then I found that only in the last 12 months has the economy there soared to heights of unbelievable proportions. When well heeled TX investors would not consider putting up $2.5 million into a business venture ONLY because it promised a “paltry” 173% ROI during its start up year.
I was sold on Perry then, and still am to this date.
Thanks
