Is It Just Me Or Is Sarah Palin The Only Republican Making Sense Right Now?

I was listening to Bill Bennett’s radio program this morning and a caller was talking about a local event that she had attended with an official from Sen McConnell’s office. She asked this person what the Republicans in the senate were going to do to stop the socialist agenda that President Obama is pushing. His response was to say that Senator McConnell thinks that we should try to work with the current administration at this time and not try to stop it.

So from our conservative journalists who have enjoyed a one night stand with Obama and are now publicly gushing about how great he is, to our Republican senators and representatives not only rolling over and playing dead for President Obama, but rolling out the red carpet for him, a rabid wave of Obamamania has now also infected the GOP. The difference between Peggy Noonan and Chris Matthews is now reduced to the drool around Matthews’ mouth. The difference between Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid has become the lack of a spine and the shape of their glasses. Why do we go out of our way to elect these people who get to Washington and instantly become kept men and women of the liberal establishment? It was bad enough that the Republican congress stopped being conservative and tried to woo the liberal media when they were in charge. One would have thought that their humiliating defeats in the last few elections would have taught them that being moderates and door mats for the Democrats isn’t a winning strategy, but here we go again.

The Senate is now falling all over itself to confirm all of President Obama’s nominees. My personal favorite is Timothy Geithner, admitted tax evader, who is set to earn “widespread bipartisan support” in his confirmation vote to be the next Treasury Secretary. So, the man who failed to pay taxes for several years and only got around to it when Obama nominated him to be Treasury Secretary is going to be confirmed because of the state of the economy. I guess the theory there is that it takes a tax evader to know one? Many Republicans are expected to vote to confirm this clown. To tax evaders everywhere I tell you that you have a friend in the Treasury Department!

Given that, I would propose that we search old footage of “To Catch A Predator” to find a child molester who happens to also have excellent credentials in the field of education to be the next Secretary of Education. As a teacher, I can attest to the fact that our education system is in need of major reforms. It’s too important to let something like kiddie porn to disqualify someone from the job. Let’s also find an illegal alien who happens to know a lot about security and put them in charge of border security. Since he knows a lot about planning terrorist attacks, let’s put Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in charge of Homeland Security (he’s going to be set free any day now anyway!) While we’re at it, let’s place Jane Fonda in charge of Veteran’s Affairs (as she knows many veterans from spitting in their faces and has had many affairs.)

Is there any common sense left in Washington?

The last hope for conservatism in America is the few Republican governors who are still actually conservatives. There are plenty of RINO governors like Pawlenty and Crist that are just as useless as the Republicans in Washington (also known as the Obama concubines) but there are a few shining examples of conservatism. Bobby Jindal, Haley Barbour and Sarah Palin stand as giants among them.

I expect Governor Jindal to grow in national importance in the next few years as he will also flirt with the idea of a presidential run. As of right now, I don’t know much about the man personally, but what I have seen reflects the conservatism that our country so desperately needs right now.

On the other hand, Governor Palin, fresh off of her run for Vice-President, still has media attention and when she speaks people listen. In both her recent interviews and her State of the State address, Palin has continued to boldly chart a path back for the Republican party by embracing the role of the pioneer woman fighting against all of the political difficulties (also known as “Yes We Can” Socialism: the “Change” Edition)by championing the optimistic America first conservatism of Ronald Reagan.

Governor Palin has continued to cut state spending with a proposed 7% cut in this year’s budget. That is not a cut in growth, but a cut in the current spending. She continues to safeguard her taxpayers by her prudent stewardship and tremendous political courage in taking on special interests and corruption. She champions less government and more personal responsibility at a time when people are expecting Obama to pay their mortgage and the government is on a fast track to own both the banking and health care industries through the new “Yes We Can” socialism brand.

So with socialism on the move, Governor Palin talks about renewing the spirit of Alaskans and independent responsibility, saying:

“Now, we can’t buy into the notion that for government to serve better, it must always spend more. Reductions we support are a chance to show the true measure in public policy. Simply increasing budgets every year, a common government practice, is no guarantee of success. More often, it’s an incentive to failure. Good public policy is accountable for results, and focused on critical priorities.”

While states like my own are asking Washington for bailouts, Governor Palin’s Alaska is strongly positioned to survive this economic situation thanks to her wise and prudent stewardship of the state’s finances. Palin reminds us that:

“In a volatile economy, numbers are not fixed, but principles are. We’ve followed the same principles from the start of this administration: fiscal discipline, limited government, and responsible stewardship. At a time when other state legislatures are staring at multi-billion-dollar deficits, and when our federal government proposes a deficit in excess of a trillion dollars this year alone, we have all the cautionary examples we need in the virtues of living within our means. With less revenue, we have an obligation to spend less money.”

It is important to note that Washington insiders and elites within the Republican party and conservative movement have written off this woman in favor of more insider candidates. She’s too far removed, you see, from the “brain trust” GOP cowards running the show in Washington who have decided that campaigning as conservatives to dupe the fools back home and governing like liberals is good for business. The grassroots conservatives better take a long hard look at this woman, however, as she represents the best hope we have of reclaiming the mantle of Reagan in an age of Obamamania. To social conservatives, she represents the pro-life position with more clarity and credibility than any in a generation. To economic conservatives, she is one of the few elected officials demonstrating to the American public how good sound conservative economic principles can guide this country through the tough economy to another economic growth period like the 1980s. To national defense conservatives, she represents the America first optimism and realism of Reagan that is needed in a world where global elitists and anti-freedom zealots seek to render America irrelevant, terrorists wish to kill her, and dictators spit in her face. Like the Teddy bear that carried a big stick over a century ago, Palin could be the “Mama Grizzly” to re-assert American strength and prominence.

Most importantly, she does all of this in a way that engages the public. Sure a lot was dumped on her during the campaign and there were some mistakes made. Let’s not forget the ratings generated by her convention speech and debate performance. Let’s also not forget the massive crowds she drew everywhere she went. The American people fell in love with Sarah Palin once and they will do so again on her terms, not those of a septuagenarian liberal & media sycophant going through the motions of his last gasp for the presidency.

It is a long road back to power for the GOP. That power, however, needs to serve a purpose. If it is more of the same mushy warmed over liberal policies of the Democrats then the GOP herd deserves to head into extinction. The conservatives of this country need to see this moment for the opportunity that it is to rebuild. Governor Sarah Palin gives us someone to build that new national movement around.

Palin was the only one who made sense

izoneguy (Diary) Friday, January 23rd at 10:54AM EST (link)

during the election.

I figure it will take about 10% of Obama voters to come around
by 2010 and 2012 to make a difference. That should be easy because
more than 10% of them will be unemployed. Soon the magic bus of hope & change crashes will into the ditch. Obama won’t create jobs,
he cannot create jobs. Private enterprise creates jobs. Right now private enterprise is going underground until the rainbows & unicorns disappear. You might get a check now in 2009 but that will all be gone and replaced by HUGE tax increases on the wealthy and corporations. That $500 or $1000 will be peanuts and not match the HUGE price increase in energy & food.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Sarah Palin and the above are members of a very small group – but I thank them for standing strong during this troubling times. I truly appreciate that at least some people still have not lost their minds (unlike so many people who have lost their minds).

To those who are running to the “ONE” – we must not forget them – in my opinion – bye bye and glad to see them gone – we must not welcome them back when things turn away from the “ONE”!!!

to overcome the ACORN fraud. They are including more funding for ACORN in their stimulus bill and George Soros is funding his Democratic Secretary of State initiative to assure they will be allowed to stuff the ballot boxes in all 50 states like they did this year in Ohio.

One of the first things “we” all have to do is work hard to elect Republican SoS in each state and then work very hard to make certain we clean out the illegal registrations in each county, as they have been doing in Oklahoma.

Part of the problem is that some powerful politicians have used their leverage to try to direct federal millions toward banks in their home states.

“It’s totally arbitrary,” says South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. “If you’ve got the right lobbyist and the right representative connected to Washington or the right ties to Washington, you get the golden tap on the shoulder,” says Gov. Sanford, a Republican.

He’s the one guy that has always been consistent in his limited government ideals. It has never mattered about any upcoming elections or anything. He sticks to his ideals. I truly believe he will be our nominee in 2012, but I hope at the very least that he’s on the ticket. He knows how to communicate conservatism to people who don’t really understand politics.

We can't win by being better Democrats than the Democrats

UpLateAgain (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 12:59PM EST (link)

It should be enough that kissing Democratic keesters has NEVER been a winning strategy. The Reps were thrown out in 2006 because they had been acting like Democrats. The American public on the whole, when times are relatively easy to live in, don’t pay sufficient attention to politics to know the difference between liberals and conservatives. They just knew they didn’t like the way Congress was acting. They really didn’t know that Democrats would do the same obnoxious things if elected, only much worse.

Conservatism WILL come back. It will because of the fundamental truth of it. I think of Reagan as a voice in the wilderness when Johnson was elected. Like communism, liberalism will eventually collapse of its own weight.

My concern, is that we don’t end up having to have a WWIII to rescue us in the manner that WWII rescued the economy in the first half of the last century.

The over-exuberance of support for her was the result of long restrained frustration with Sen. McCain’s campaign and positions. Palin represented the conservative base in ways that McCain did not – both in terms of positions and in terms of biography – and also spoke unapologetically about her beliefs.

I know you don’t care for her, and I respect that, especially based on your long experience in AK politics, but I can’t agree with your suggestion.

"One speech"

Achance (Diary) Sunday, January 25th at 2:57PM EST (link)

was the mantra of opposition to the Obamessiah. Gov. Palin made one speech and to many she became the new image of the Republican Party. The Left mindlessly attacked her and it seemed the more the Left attacked her, the more she was adored on the right. I think you’ll find an old post of mine from back then that starts with “I can’t believe I’m defending Sarah Palin,” so some of it was pretty natural and understandable considering what her opposition was doing.

Nevertheless, people were reading all sorts of things into who and what she was, projecting what they wanted her to be, without the slightest knowledge of who she was and what she actually stood for. I’ve had some pretty good arguments with people here who were asserting that “Sarah is this” or “Sarah is that,” and there isn’t a scintilla of evidence or even a public statement that she is or isn’t anything of the kind. As SteveLA and I discussed the other day, she to this day has no real record or recorded position on most National and International issues.

Over the next two, four, or six years she may become an experienced and articulate represenative of Republicanism and conservativeism. She may not. And I actually don’t have any real issues with her on National or International issues, to the extent that I or anyone knows her positions. I do have some serious issues with her on Alaska issues and she is first and foremost the Governor of my State so I take a very strong interest in that.

Usually it is the left that fall in love with their candidate – usually on the first date – and most of the time that hasn’t worked for them. But one speech CAN prime the pump enough to make a run for the presidency possible (and successful).

I’d rather have Palin than McCain. But then, that’s not really a choice between conservatives, is it??

The ultimate determinant in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas-a trial of spiritual resolve: the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideals to which we are dedicated.

No one has landed a cleaner punch to Obama's chops than Palin

at the Republican convention.

No, she later demonstrated a lack of a full playbook in 2008, but at the time of the interviews/debates, she’d been a remote-state governor for two years and a national player for all of a ~month.

Many of us, however, recognize her gift to speak straight to political correctness and win. She needs some seasoning, but she definitely has potential.

For once I agree with you VSV Palin

Her interview with Beck was sad…I think she’s hired some “advisers” to help her and if she stays with them…they’ll end up watering down what makes her special and ultimately destroy her.

Beck and Palin

Scope (Diary) Monday, January 26th at 8:24AM EST (link)

Agreed Jaded, that interview bothered me as well. If I’m not mistaken Beck started out saying that he would give Obama a chance, even knowing he didn’t deserve any chance as there was no question as to his far left liberalism. If Palin was “going along with Beck”, to get along with him in the interview, that’s bad. I remember hearing during the campaign that Palin was a reformer and had appointed some Democrats to her administration. If she appointed them because they were the best qualified, great, I can accept that. At this point, I would actually prefer some Democrats rather than the Republicans that are nothing more than democrat lite, such as McCain, Collins, Snowe, Specter, Voinivitch and on and on and on. The electorate told us in this last election, if you like Democrat policies, vote for those that honestly represent the real thing.

Palin was simply being Shrewd

Section9 Monday, January 26th at 11:55AM EST (link)

If you listened to her State of the State address on You Tube, you heard Conservatism in Action, something we haven’t seen since Reagan.

Palin is very savvy politically. She understands that the American people don’t want “obstructionism”. They want “cooperation”. The problem is who defines what cooperation actually is. She defines it her way, Barack defines it his way.

She hasn’t stopped being a Reaganite. Movement people don’t get this.

“History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it”-Winston Churchill

Fair enough Section9...but if she was being shrewed...she needs to knock it off..

the main source of her appeal was her genuineness and authenticity…acting like a politician and playing coy will lead to the absolute destruction of her appeal!

Governor Palin is speaking it. 2012 may be her year, we shall see. I like Sanford & Jindal, Barbour & others. Gov. Palin is back to doing a great job for the state of Alaska & still on the national scene. I pray to see her campaigning across the country for Republican candidates – no one energized the base as well as she did & still does.

Watch the GOP Try To Take Palin Down

bc3 Monday, January 26th at 2:25PM EST (link)

Watch for people in the GOP to try to destroy Sarah Palin. David Frum may be among the first with his newmajority.com. His basic goal is to win elections by moving the party to the left.

What’s their greatest obstacle? A petite brunette from Wasilla. They saw what she has done in Alaska and can only imagine the havoc Sarah Palin could create in DC.

I love that woman.

Palin needs to be the "stimulus" that starts a new party

izoneguy (Diary) Monday, January 26th at 2:29PM EST (link)

The Reform and destroy democrat party

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

As Palin talks about government spending...

I do not apologize when I do something wrong. Monday, January 26th at 4:10PM EST (link)

…keep in mind that Alaska has a nice fat surplus precisely because Governor Palin implemented a windfall profits tax against the oil companies. (A progressive tax pegged directly to the market price of a commodity IS a windfall profits tax.)

I’m still waiting for a conservative-principled defense of that budgetary tactic…give her props for not wasting that surplus with new spending, sure, but we have to acknowledge its origin in higher taxes.

This is my site, which I did not reveal to you because I actually think that you’re all knuckle-dragging theocrats.

I dunno, a two billion, give or take, increment

Achance (Diary) Monday, January 26th at 4:32PM EST (link)

between SFY 06 and SFY 08 is a good bit of “new spending.” You’ll find the Alaska Comprehensive Annual Report enlightening. It’s here: http://fin.admin.state.ak.us/dof/financial_reports/resource/08cafr.pdf See, particularly, Exhibit 3 at page xi.

I spent most of my career with a General Fund operating budget of less than $2 Billion. SFY 08 was over $8 Billion. Yeah, a lot did get saved, some of it even legally, and a lot got appropriated but not expended, another form of saving, but Alaska has been on a spending spree since SFY 06, Murkowski’s last year. Gov. Palin has wielded that line item veto to make headlines and to punish enemies, but the budget has gone up inexorably.

So Jim DeMint is making no sense? Really?

E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Monday, January 26th at 4:19PM EST (link)

Jeb Hensarling, Mike Pence, Tom Coburn, all dunces?

Just for example, DeMint’s comments before being one of only 2 Senators to vote against Hillary’s nomination to SecState.

Full Remarks by U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) on the Nomination of Hillary Clinton to Secretary of State

JANUARY 21, 2009

Mr. President, Senator Clinton is uniquely and highly qualified for the job of Secretary of State. She has been very open and forthright in her answers to questions at the Committee hearings and to my questions asked in private conversations and in the dozens of questions I submitted to her for written responses.

I believe she honestly wants what is best for our nation, and I will do my best to support her in that endeavor.

As a member of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, I voted to send her nomination to the full Senate, because I believe she has earned the right to an up-or-down vote.

Senator Clinton will be confirmed today. There is not much doubt about that.

She will be sworn in and when she does she will have my prayers for her success.

At the Committee level, I said she not only had the potential to be a good Secretary of State, but a great Secretary of State.

But, her success will be determined by more than just her considerable intellect and experience.

It will also be determined by the policies she pursues.

This is one area that concerns me. Based on her testimony, her answers to questions, and her public statements, I believe she will take our foreign policy in a direction that erodes our national independence and surrenders sovereignty to international powers.

I am deeply concerned that she will take aim at decades-old policies intended to protect the sanctity of human life. These policies ensure that our foreign assistance money do not fund abortion, and are not used to lobby foreign nations to repeal laws that protect unborn children.

The United States is certainly an economic, political, and military superpower. But, we have also strived to be more — to be a moral superpower. Our unwavering adherence to principles of freedom and human dignity set us apart, and these pro-life regulations contribute to that moral leadership.

Some will argue that we should expect these policies from Senator Clinton, given that President Obama has very strong views supporting unrestricted abortion. I understand that. And to some degree, I believe he should be allowed to surround himself with individuals who share his views, even if they are misguided. Within reason, I may even support a nominee who has certain views I disagree with.

I do not plan to slow up this nomination, but I do find it difficult to support a nominee who I know will pursue policies so contrary to American sovereignty and the dignity of the human person. I will continue to try to persuade Secretary of State Clinton and President Obama to modify their positions. That obviously won’t happen before the vote today.

But, one matter I had hoped would be resolved before the vote today is the Clinton Foundation and its initiatives. I urged Senator Clinton at the hearing, as others did, to do whatever she could to eliminate any doubt about the foundation’s fundraising and the potential conflict of interest with foreign nations. I believe this problem can be very easily fixed, if the foundation agrees to refuse all foreign donations and fully disclose all contribution online immediately as long as Sen. Clinton is Secretary of State. To date, Senator Clinton has not agreed to do this.

Let’s be clear. Senator Clinton does not have to provide this disclosure to be confirmed — she already has the votes. As far as I know, the law does not require any of this disclosure. In fairness, the foundation plans to provide disclosure far beyond what it is required to do legally. But we are in new waters here, the first time the spouse of a former president is stepping into such an important role. In a world where bribes, kickbacks, and pay to play are all too often the normal way of doing business, the United States must stand apart. As President Obama said yesterday, “those of us who manage the public’s dollar will be held to account… and [we must] do our business in the light of day because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.”

That’s why, I believe, additional steps should be taken to eliminate this potential conflict. This will help her be a Secretary of State that is above reproach. It is essential that our Secretary be seen as treating nations fairly. I have every belief that Sen. Clinton can be a fair Secretary of State. But, it is not enough that we treat other nations fairly. They must know they are being treated fairly.

If there is suspicion that certain nations or international players are gaining advantage by virtue of contributions to the Clinton Foundation or its initiatives that will compromise our new Secretary’s effectiveness. This is why I believe only full and immediate public disclosure, and refusal of all foreign donations, is the only solution.

The memorandum of understanding signed by the foundation leaves a lot of discretion to Senator Clinton. During her confirmation hearing, Sen Lugar presented a request for more acceptable disclosures, and Sen Kerry, as chairman, supported these recommendations. Unfortunately, Sen. Clinton has not agreed to follow even these modest recommendations.

For these reasons, I will be voting against the nomination, but I will do so with nothing but sincere hope and goodwill toward our new Secretary of State, and pray for her success as she takes the helm of the State Department.

I thank the Chair and yield the floor.

So, which part of this is ‘not making any sense’?

It’s not a bad diary, but you should choose your titles with a bit more thought.

Sarah better not crap on Obama

newagegop (Diary) Monday, January 26th at 11:07PM EST (link)

She’s gonna have to politely disagree or Alaskans may suffer. It’s frankly her job to be civil and protect her people from political party that needs to destroy her. You’ve already had the case of the “Missing custom officals” which she had to step in and stop. Now you’ve got those 80 year old vets who lost part of their retirement all of a sudden.

Sarah’s smart so don’t expect her to slam Obama too hard. It could cost her politically and cost Alaskans.

Oh and my governor is Charlie Crist…if you Alaskans aren’t happy with Sarah, I’ll trade you.

I have thought long and hard about this. The GOP did such a lousy job of governing and spending when it controlled that few people are listening to them right now. The Obama euphoria will take time to wear off. Most of the Dem proposals will pass without GOP support anyway. I think the GOP should oppose Obama on all issues without appearing obstructionist for the time being, The Dems must be allowed to govern and fail. Until such failure there is not much we can do. We have a hostile media where twits like Andrea Mitchell interview Susan Collins as if she were the Chairmen of the DNC.

GOP mistakes

I think statements like DeMints or Orin Hatch on Geithner are very damaging, They should simply shut up. If they are going to vote for a Marxist or tax cheat they should simply do it quietly. Suddenly this new term has surfaces ” Uniquely qualfied”. Reminds me of Hubris, Gravitas, Guilt by Association, Disproportionate response and of course the latest word for the Inexperienced Leon Panetta ” He is a ” Serious” man. What makes Hillary uniquely qualifed for Sec of State? Her resume is laugable when compared to Condi Rice or Henry Kissingger or even George Mitchell.

Palin for President? No.

Not yet. She needs to replace Lisa Murkowski as Senator from Alaska by defeating her in the next primary and getting elected.

For also making some sense this morning. I saw him on Fox News criticizing the Obama spending spree New Deal 2: Expanded Socialism Edition dressed up as a stimulus package. He did a nice job of being the opposition. Sadly Sen. McConnell and Rep Boehner are not nearly as effective in that regard.
