Obama’s Running Mate: Hagel

I'll bet $10 on it

It’s going to be Chuck Hagel. From a story in today’s Lincoln Journal-Star:

A Wall Street Journal report that Sen. Chuck Hagel will accompany Sen. Barack Obama on a trip to Iraq and Afghanistan kicked up a frenzy Friday on credible political blogs.

The Journal reported online that two sources confirmed the Nebraska Republican will travel with the Democratic presidential nominee to the war zones.

Picking Hagel would give The Messiah of HopeChangeHope the facade of the bipartisanship that he has been claiming to advocate all along. Of course Hagel stopped being a true Republican many years ago but that is besides the point.

Who cares about Hagel?

Daniel Glenn (Diary) Saturday, July 12th at 6:27PM EST (link)

If Obama continues to betray the netroots, then he is going to have nominate a creature of the far-left like Chris Dud or Joe Biden in order to satsify the netroots. Of course, this negates any swing to the center that Obama has made, and puts in him in quite a pickle.

But then again, Hagel could help to deliver Nebraska, where as Dud and what’s his face? – Biden deliver states that would have gone blue anyway, so that could play into Screamin’ Howard Dean’s 50-state strategy.

Again, Obama finds himself in quite a pickle, but who ever said politics was easy?

Hagel brings Obama nothing...

…except grief.

The vast Che Guevara wing of the Democratic Party will become (even more) apoplectic, forcing Obama to veer leftward yet again. This latest contortion will reinforce his burgeoning his image as an amoral opportunist.

Additionally, Hagel will not deliver any electoral votes.

As someone who would thoroughly enjoy seeing the Democratic nominee lose all fifty states, I love this choice. Assuming that Obama cannot bring himself to choose Jane Fonda, Hagel is the next best thing.

Obama/Ford?

FrankLucia (Diary) Sunday, July 13th at 1:44AM EST (link)

There was some buzz about an Obama / Harold Ford Jr. ticket. It’s similar to Clinton picking Gore, as opposed to a “ticket balancer”. It would truly be a surprise pick, were it to happen, and may put TN and other southern states into play.

Obama/Dodd

  1. There is a post here pointing to this match-up. Comments are sensible.

  2. Sen. Lieberman is enjoining Obama to select Dodd. It’s odd, isn’t it? Liebermans is cooking something for his friend McCain?

Instead of VP, think SecDef. "Bipartisans" would simply melt into Obama's camp.

That’s what I think Obama is going for anyway. It gives his fan base in the media another thing to point to and shore up his “Bipartisan” image to the marginally informed.

It's a "fact finding" trip, ...

as opposed to a staged political event paid for by Sen. Obama’s campaign.

Although, it’s clear that Sen. Obama is not at all interested in a factual analysis of the current conditions in Iraq and Afghanistan (Iraq has met 15 of 18 benchmarks mandated by the Democrats), and he will certainly try to make political hay while on the taxpayer’s dime.

However, there are certain risks involved when a politician travels to a war zone. It’s political suicide to be seen as clueless and clearly out of one’s element.

Simply stated: Sen. Obama has been forced to make this trip. It’s imperative that he stops the clock. It’s currently at 917 days, and counting.

Sen. Hagel is irrelevant.

Sen Hagel = bipartisanship? NOT

I hope he does pick this loser and anyone who thinks Hagel brings right of center voters to Obama is quite simply living in la-la land!

Might as well..

My most despised liberal is Obama, my most despised “conservative” is Hagel. Might as well as have both these dummies running together..

Nope.

Mark Kilmer (Diary) Sunday, July 13th at 4:44PM EST (link)

Do not think for a second that the Democrats will accept a pro-life Republican on their ticket, even if they agree with Hagel on the war.

The only purpose Hagel could serve would be to attract conservatives to the Obama ticket, and he won’t do that because most conservatives no longer consider Hagel to be one of them because of his outspoken opposition to victory in Iraq.

It’s not going to be Hagel, no matter what his hometown paper suggests.

Cut and run = no Hagel

janis (Diary) Sunday, July 13th at 5:17PM EST (link)

A cut and run Obama would never select a Hagel. Both nominees will need someone to help them on the ticket, or at least not hurt them. I prefer Rice for McCain, but that might not be in the cards. Senator Obama just needs a quick study to bolster his meager military and foreign affairs credentials. That cannot be done in one or two visits to Iraq. His charisma evaporates under strict scrutiny.

Doubt it

StevenK (Diary) Sunday, July 13th at 11:30PM EST (link)

Hagel makes Joe Biden look modest.

No ticket could ever package that much arrogance without bursting before November. Obama should know better.
