PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE CONCERENED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF AMERICA AND THE CHILDREN!!!!! I was in English class last period and we were talking about why people come together for causes. My teacher asked for an example; a student raised his hand and mentioned 9/11. The student said that the reason Americans conformed after 9/11 was hatred for the Islamic People. The teacher immediately agreed and expanded. At which point I raised my hand to argue the OUTRAGEOUS untruth. The teacher blew my idea off disagreeing and asking the student to expand. I explained to the teacher and the rest of the class that the reason Americans congregated is out of love for our country. We also grouped together to defend our country from a radical sect of Islam. The teacher and student both disagreed and were critical of my point. This is disgraceful and harmful. American hating liberals are teaching our school and it’s absolutely sickening. I am going to discuss this issue with our more Conservative principal. Hopefully there is one educator who realizes who Americans are, country loving and defending people, not hate-mongering racists.

Amy Miller (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 11:28AM EST (link)…unless you take a stand. I’m not telling you to be belligerent or get yourself in trouble, but if your class is in a debate, don’t EVER let something like that go, because an idea like that isn’t some obscure philosophical concept–it’s tantamount to calling people like you and I racist.
Senior year of college, I got into a similar debate in a seminar class. I brought up the fact that rallying to patriotism after 9/11 was due to love of country, not hatred aimed at another group of people. For the next HOUR, I proceeded to defend myself as my professor and several of my classmates had a go at me for being an emotional racist. In the end I won, but then again, you can get away with A LOT more in college.
Good luck with your principal. Your teacher should not be allowed to get away with this kind of garbage.

Brian Hibbert (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 11:49AM EST (link)I wish I could say I’m surprised, but I’m not.
In your next few years of schooling, you’re going to get more of this type of “logic” and “information”. As Amy said, don’t get yourself in trouble when arguing these points, but do keep arguing them. Make sure you keep calm when pointing out such fallacies as “America’s hatred for Islam”, you’ll lose in a shouting match (in more ways than one). Make sure that facts are on your side and stick to your guns. You’ll do fine.
Also, be aware that in some cases, disagreeing politically with the teacher or professor will get you a low or failing grade in your class. But at least in college, you can retake a class with a different instructor for a higher grade. Just remember that your principles and honestly are more important than your GPA. If your parents are conservatives too, and you explain what is happening, they’ll agree.

cameron3332 (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 2:53PM EST (link)Thank you all for all of your replies. The teacher later talked to me about it. He said i seemed upset which is why he wanted to talk to me. He said hat there are many different sides of that argument and that no one meant it in a mean-spirited way. He also explained that he “hopes” that Americans came together for love of their country instead of hate, but he said that most likely hate is the reason Americans congregated together. I disagreed, then he told me that i couldn’t prove my point. Then i said that we are America. He didn’t have a response to that.

Sorry, I am a little late to this topic...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Sunday, May 17th at 2:30AM EST (link)but, your professor who is teaching English seems to be off topic here with this discussion. Let me tell you something from a person who has just as many reputable credentials that many adults (and teachers) have poor skills in topics that are outside of their expertise. Your teacher is an example of venturing into a topic and a position that makes him look very naive.
My words of wisdom for a 14 year old (from a 33 year old) is your teachers do not know everything and sometimes they are even wrong when it comes to their course lectures. I know now that my professors in college taught the course incorrectly and I have spent a couple of years relearning the material from my college curriculum. To clarify, I am a laser and optical physicist which is a science curriculum and if teachers in hard science can be wrong imagine what happens with teachers in English, Socialogy and Psychology, not to mention political sciences.
Finally, to address your teachers argument about proving your point, you could have asked him that when the Americans cheered their 1980 Winter Olympics hockey team against the USSR (Miracle on Ice) or our Womens Soccer World Cup Champions we must have united in hate towards the Soviets (1980) or the Chinese.
What you need to say to your teacher next time he engages in a topic of this type please tell him the following “I am sorry [insert teachers name], but I believe this topic falls outside of the curriculum of English and should be reserved for a person better qualified to judge American opinion” or something like that. Basically, an English teacher is not qualified to be making blanket judgements about American sentiment. Tell him to stick to punctuation, sentence structure, reading comprehension and writing, because he did not go to school or was he given his current job to give his opinion or opine on a topic outside of his expertise.
I am sorry to tell you, but get used to this because as you age you will find that your teachers were not the geniuses that you thought they were. Learn it now because it will advance you further than I was at your age. Question everything that does not seem right and be skeptical it will serve you well in your career.
Yes, "we are America"!
skorrent1 (Diary) Sunday, May 17th at 8:40AM EST (link)As a six-year-old, you may not remember, but there was a great upswelling of patriotism immediately after 9/11. American flags on cars, “God bless America” bumper stickers. This offers support for your position. By contrast, the reaction to the Danish Muhammed cartoons was driven by anti-Western hate. Riots in the streets, burning Western offices and shops. That didn’t happen here. Your teacher’s position lacks evidence.
Good for you Cameron!!

Unfortunately, this isn't new
JustLeaveMeAlone (Diary) Thursday, May 14th at 9:44PM EST (link)I’m dating myself here, but back in my high school days, I had a history teacher who spent six weeks on the Viet Nam War. Our only grade for the entire period was on one essay — we had to write a paper comparing the Viet Nam War to the Civil War. And that paper had to reflect her views, or it would earn a poor grade.
This teacher spent six weeks not teaching the history of either war, but with opining daily how the Viet Nam War was a civil war across the Pacific in which America had no business interfering. America was wrong; we were imperialist warmongers; and our soldiers were babykillers.
There was no mention of French Indochina or of how Ho Chi Mihn came to Truman after WWII and asked for American support against the reimposition of French colonialism; no mention of how he was turned away (to suck up to DeGaulle for some inexplicable reason) and thus pushed into the arms of the Chinese communists; no discussion of the corrupt South Vietnamese regime — nor, on the other side, any mention of the way American servicemen’s hands were tied by ridiculous rules of engagement, or the treatment of our POWs at the hands of the Viet Cong and NVN; or the politics of “escalation”…. I could go on and on. None of that did I learn in her classroom, however.
Nope; I only began to learn all that years after, when I spent 20 years with a man who was at Long Bihn when it was overrun at Tet; when the guy with the key to the ammo was in town; when they had to call in for permission to fire back at snipers trying to kill them in the guard towers.
I digress; but my teacher was committed to spending six weeks turning her class into anti-war protesters who would march on the Pentagon or the White House. Her message was that my country was wrong.
That was over 30 years ago. Some things never change.

rasmus (Diary) Sunday, May 17th at 12:10PM EST (link)but he just had a disagreement with you. His opinion is faulty and he couldn’t support his argument either, but… as long as he doesn’t give you bad grades because of this or something like that I don’t see the use of talking to the principal. Ausonius (Diary) Monday, May 18th at 4:41PM EST (link)I have been in several in various cities, and the same left-wing nonsense can be found in Religion and History/Social Studies.
My present school has an aging female hippie teaching precisely those 2 courses, and the kids receive daily doses of comments e.g. “America wasn’t hated by the world before W. Bush was president” or “Abortion is just one issue in deciding whom to vote for: Obama is anti-war and for the poor and homeless.”
And she marched around with a gruesome green and brown Obama Button for several weeks.
My solution for her and all liberals: if you voted Democrat, hand over most of your income, so it can be given to the poor and homeless and pacifist groups. If you like Marxist pacifism so much, let the government decide that you “need” only $300. a week to live on, and save the planet with the rest!
Ausonius: 310-395 A.D. Teacher, Poet, Consul, General, Farmer.
Personal Tutor to the future St. Paulinus of Nola and to young Gratian, heir to the throne during the turbulent final years of the Western Roman Empire. When his former student Gratian was assassinated, Ausonius threw up his hands and retired to his farm in Gaul. Rome was captured by barbarians 14 years after his death.
