CNN reports five more House Democrats said Tuesday that they will vote against the Democrats’ Senate Obamacare bill. According to CNN, the Democrats are 11 votes shy of passing Obamacare.
Friday, we reported that the Democrats were within four votes of passing Obamacare. Monday we were told that the Democrats picked up four votes. Was that just propaganda to make it appear that passage of the unpopular Obamacare bill was, like a Hillary Presidency, inevitable?
CNN’s analysis shows that opposition in the House to the Senate Obamacare bill has reached 205 members:
- A total of 27 House Democrats, including nine who supported the House plan in November, have indicated that they would join a unified Republican caucus in opposing the Senate plan, which passed in that chamber December 24 with the minimum required 60 votes.
- Of the 39 Democrats who voted against the House plan in November, 17 have indicated that they will vote against the Senate plan as written, 11 remain uncommitted, and nine did not return repeated calls for comment.
The CNN numbers explain why the House Democrats leaders scheme to avoid a direct vote on the Senate bill with procedural shenanigans like the unconstitutional Slaughter gambit.

The most discouraging fact is that despite all this hand wringing you have a big democrat majority in the house and they just have to twist a few arms and promise them positions in this new bureaucracy and this thing is over.
This is all ab establishing a health care entitlement. Once big subsidies are unleashed on the middle class it’s over.
Are the Democrats really delusional enough
marshmom (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 8:50AM EST (link)to believe that they can vote for this “Slaughter solution” and pretend it’s not a vote for Obamacare??
If they’ve got opposition to Obamacare by these certain Democrats, why wouldn’t those same Democrats vote against this Slaughter rule??
Am I missing something?
I think
partyof1 Wednesday, March 17th at 9:01AM EST (link)the original reasoning was that the Slaughter rule would give them cover for voting yes on Obamacare while not technically voting for it.
But now it will be harder to do because of all the attention the “Slaughter Solution” has received from the Right.
But to make sure they know that we know, I suggest mentioning that a vote for Slaughter is the same as a vote for Obamacare if you call them.

A Healthcare Bill with Bipartisan Support
loganyung (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 9:07AM EST (link)I’d like someone to ask Democrats about the vote on HR4626. Why is it that a reasonable reform can attract 406 votes in the House? I though that opponents of Obamacare were just obstructionists. This should be used in debates against Democrats to show how extreme the Obamacare is.
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) today voted to repeal the 65 year-old anti-trust exemption afforded to healthcare insurance companies, which passed the House by a vote of 406 to19. In the last 14 years, 400 health insurers merged, and now 94% of all insurance markets are “highly concentrated,” meaning consumers have little or no choice among insurance providers.

Don't get your hopes up on the CBO report.
conservativemusician Wednesday, March 17th at 10:04AM EST (link)It is full steam ahead and they will stop at nothing to get this done. It really doesn’t matter what the CBO report will show either way because Obama will not listen to reason. Most importantly, he is not listening to us, the people. As Rush said yesterday, this is not really about health care anymore. It is about Obama saving face and saving his presidency and he doesn’t care if saving himself means the ruination of this great country.
CBO "Score"
edintexas Wednesday, March 17th at 10:11AM EST (link)What difference would it make. The CBO doesn’t skew the data (not much anyway), but they compile their projection of costs based solely on the “facts” given to them. So if a bill claims that half the $1 Trillion USD cost will come from a Medicare payment reduction of $500 Billion USD, the CBO will use that data in their cost analysis, even though the analysts may all firmly believe that the Congress will NEVER cut even $10.00 USD from the Medicare program. And if the bill is written so the taxes and other alleged income is to start on day one, but the benefit payments would not start until the end of the 4th year of tax collection, the CBO does not project beyond the 10 year period to show the next 10 years would be losing money.
In sum – the CBO projection is ruled by the old computer GIGO* rule.
* Just in case there is someone in the world not familiar – Garbage In, Garbage Out.
The problem...
lunarmanathome (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 10:27AM EST (link)with CBO scoring anymore is that the majority party sends only what can be scored – of oucrse the CBO will score it lower than actual costs. Smoke and mirrors – they are not concerned with fiscal responsibility, especially in light of the Keynesian approach to dealing with recessions.
CBO scoring, as credible as the CBO is, has no value.

Seattle Times editorial today
mavericktime Wednesday, March 17th at 10:04AM EST (link)http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/editorials/2011354314_edit16healthinsurance.html
Excerpt:
“THIRTY million dollars is being spent on ads to persuade members of Congress to vote for or against the health insurance bill. This is all aimed at a few uncommitteds, such as Rep. Brian Baird, D-Vancouver. Call it a million dollars a vote.
To this cashophony, we add our 75 cents. For years, this newspaper has favored health care reform. We still favor it, done at the right time and in the right way. We do not favor this bill and urge Baird and his colleagues to vote against it.
Right now the government’s goal should be the revival of business investment and the creation of private-sector jobs. This cannot be put off. It has to be pursued now, and it has to be President Obama’s major concern.
A good health insurance bill might help the economic recovery. But it would do this only if it controlled health care costs, so that when an American worker received a raise, he or she might actually see some of it. But this bill offers no real control of costs. It is all about coverage.”

Are markets signaling Obamacare failure?
Spartan4Life (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 10:34AM EST (link)I think they are. Here’s why.
Let’s face it. This bill sucks. Even most of the Dems in the House that are being encouraged(forced) to vote for it hate the bill. I can’t think of one thing in the bill that the markets would like, given the fragile state of our economy. It raises taxes, puts onerous mandates on individuals and small businesses, creates a new entitlement at a time when we are already broke, raises the cost of hiring, and divides our country at a time when we need to be coming together. In short, the stock market should hate this bill.
And yet, the market has been up something like 12 of the last 14 days. I think if investors really thought this bill was going to pass they would be crushing stocks right now, not driving them higher.
I’m not saying the markets are infallible but sometimes it helps to follow the money.

Stock markets probably would rally on Obamacare
Francis Cianfrocca (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 10:50AM EST (link)It would be a net negative for the insurance industry but positive for pharma, providers, and device companies. You’re talking about adding at least a trillion dollars in new spending to this industry over ten years. There’ll be a lot of profits made on that spending, and profits drive stock prices.
Over the last few days, I’ve seen no obvious signs that the market is signaling the outcome of the healthcare debate. Stocks are rallying today on lower interest rates and continued recovery, and the health-sensitive stocks appear to be tracking the broader market.
Francis, I Usually Bow To Your Analysis...
Spartan4Life (Diary) Wednesday, March 17th at 11:12AM EST (link)….but I think it is a little more nuanced than that. While I agree that there will be more money in healthcare, not less, it is more about where that money is coming from that I am focused on. The money is either being borrowed(bad), taxed(bad), or printed(worse).
