Obama refuses to support Britain in Falkland Islands dispute with Argentina

What Special Relationship?

Yesterday we wondered whether President Obama would support Britain in the latest dispute with Argentina over the Falkland Islands? Today we learn Obama decided not to support Britain, our closest ally.

According to the Times, The Obama/Hillary State Department insisted that the U.S. position was one of longstanding neutrality:

“We are aware not only of the current situation but also of the history, but
our position remains one of neutrality,” a State Department spokesman told
The Times. “The US recognises de facto UK administration of the islands but
takes no position on the sovereignty claims of either party.”

This seems like revisionist history, and is a far cry from the staunch support the U.S. gave Britain under President Reagan during the 1982 Falklands War.

President Obama, once hailed as our first European President, has thrown out the United State’s long-standing special relationship with our closest ally. Obama chose, under a false pretense of neutrality, to side with a corrupt, agressive Argentine government that is backed by Hugo Chavez and is threatening a blockade of British territory.

This is how Obama repays Britain for continuing to support our special relationship and providing thousands of British soldiers to lay their lives on the line alongside their American allies on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Do not let Obama get away with this latest outrage. Call the White House. Call your Senators. Call your Representative. Tell them the American people, if not their current president, back our most dependable and important ally. So should the federal government.

Sure, & Arizona and New Mexico are Next

Well, duh! He hates American exceptionalism and believes we do not need European allies. Our buddies are the rest of the world and he intends to prove it. Just so we understand where he is coming from, I fully expect him to suggest giving Mexico at least “special” rights in Arizona and New Mexico before 2012. Should cement his standing with the illegal immigrant voters.

This is how Obama repays Britain

Probably not for much longer…..the British troops will probably be re-deployed to the Falklands.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

That's to be expected, but when it comes down to it,

Britain probably won’t support Britain in the Falklands, either. Not this time.

I can hear Declan McManus tuning up his guitar:

Is it worth it?
A new winter coat and shoes for the wife
And a bicycle on the boy’s birthday
It’s just a rumour that was spread around town
By the women and children
Soon we’ll be shipbuilding…….
Well I ask you
The boy said “Dad they’re going to take me to task, but I’ll be back by Christmas”
It’s just a rumour that was spread around town
Somebody said that someone got filled in
For saying that people get killed in
The result of this shipbuilding
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls
It’s just a rumour that was spread around town
A telegram or a picture postcard
Within weeks they’ll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
Once again
It’s all we’re skilled in
We will be shipbuilding……..
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls.

And who knows what the outcome will be, and who will hold the balance of power. Nobody knows what the Conservatives really stand for (including the Conservatives themselves) – and if neither major party wins a majority in Parliament, even more uncertainty.

Honduras redux...

Castor (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 9:45AM EST (link)

It was totally predictable.
The Obamunists in the state department haven´t learned their lesson from their fiasco in Honduras. They just love to make their friend, Hugo Chávez feel good, not to mention the leftists Kirchners who mismanage Argentina.
Fortunately, Sebastian Piñera becomes president of Chile in 2 weeks and will continue äir communications to the Falklands.
To the Brits, I say, ¨Remember 1982 and Drill, BABY, DRILL !

Chavez's involvement explains it

mustango (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 9:47AM EST (link)

Somehow I think Chavez won Obama’s everlasting affection with that “sulfur” remark (or possibly it was that moment when Pat Robertson suggested offing the guy and everyone gave him a funny look because Chavez hadn’t yet gone so visibly off the deep end) and as a result Obama can’t bring himself to raise a finger against the man. Whether it’s ruthless crackdowns in his own Venezuela or trouble-making in Costa Rica and now Argentina, it’s all good with Obama, apparently.

As Daniel Ortega, with the assistance of Chavez and Iran, is trying to subvert their constitution and carry out the leftist dictatorship that Reagan stopped nearly 30 years ago.

Just another reminder that the left keeps the long view and never changes their goals and commitment to ideology regardless of facts, just their rhetoric.

They have decided that our Chicago agitator is low class, spineless, and lacking even a hint of decency, a modern liberal. So why not they ask?

I can tell for education from the 40s and 50s to today, the changes have been for destruction of what is considered academic, what is scientific (which is why the A/MGW scam lasted to so long), and what passes for art and talent.

Obamanation owes Britain for routing the trading posts on the Gold Coast to stop the trans-Atlantic slave trade after Britain outlawed slavery, decades before the US. But it’s something you would never hear in a public school.

Simple rubric on foreign policy

civil truth (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 11:21AM EST (link)

1) The Administration will support the party that is more leftist.

2) If neither is recognizably left of the other, then it’s kowtow to the more “stable” (i.e. totalitarian) party.

3) If still unclear, then the nod goes to the favored “oppressed by the West” group.

The author of this thread is wrong historically

oldcountryboy Thursday, February 25th at 1:17PM EST (link)

During the first Falklands war, The United States declared neutrality. We did help the UK under the table, but we were declared neutral. There were three reasons for the declaration 1) was that we were and are allies of both countrys; and 2) If we declared in favor of a European power, we would be toast in the OAS; and 3) the Monroe doctrine forbade us from backing a non-western hemisphere country against a western hemisphere country (unless by not doing so could cause immediate danger to the US or US interests.

Monroe Doctrine?

You still didn’t disagree that we were officially neutral during the falklands war.
The problem with some conservatives is that they hear a good story and go with it on druthers, not if it is or isn’t true. Sorta like the liberals. Do you supopose this is just human nature. In this case, we don’t trach true history in the schools and we never teach true critical thinking.

Fact Check

Dan Spencer (Diary) Thursday, February 25th at 1:57PM EST (link)

From Wikipedia – http://is.gd/9aShL

“The United States initially tried to mediate an end to the conflict. However, when Argentina refused the U.S. peace overtures, U.S. Secretary of State Alexander Haig announced that the United States would prohibit arms sales to Argentina and provide material support for British operations. Both Houses of the U.S. Congress passed resolutions supporting the U.S. action siding with the United Kingdom.”

Hardly neutral.

Appreciation from the UK

flex Sunday, February 28th at 7:18AM EST (link)

Thanks for the sentiments. It’s good to know we have friends in the US. The President could so easily have shown more support for his ally. Hundreds of British troops have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. US troops will see British troops fighting and dying alongside them, not Argentinian. The US has more in common with countries which share it’s values, culture and history, than those which simply share it’s continental land mass. The Falklanders want to be British, as they have been since 1833, that should be paramount.

I apologize for Obama
