I took my 11 year old nephew and a couple of his friends to a Dodgers game recently and it took all I had not to snatch the mess out of one of his friends. I told all the boys to stand, remove their hats and place said hats over their hearts while the natioanl anthem was being played. One of the boys said that he didn't want to do that; well, I let him know that he was going to do it or find his behind sitting in the parking lot waiting for his mother to pick him up. He didn't think it was a big deal, but I took the time to give all the boys a history lesson on the way home. I told his mother that she needed to teach her son to respect the Stars and Stripes and the history behind it. Sadly, I don't think she understood what I was saying.

I really don't understand why these people hate our country.

For 14, that's quite amazing. Most 14 year old's only care about texting or their Ipod. It's really disgusting how this country and it's brave men and women have done so much for the people here, yet they despise everything we stand for.
It's time for a change.

The media usually covers up this sort of thing for the Dems.

That said, not a smart move. Perhaps they were relying on the media covering it up? But with the average voter seeing it on the news, and it will be played over and over and over by Beck, O'Reilly and Hannity, this is going to hurt the NY Dems tremendously.

Consider the fact that as my oldest daughter rehearsed for her junior high school graduation, she was the ONLY one to stand up when they began to rehearse our National Anthem. When her teachers came over and told her she could sit down with the rest of her class (it was hot, no a/c), my fourteen-year-old replied, "No. This is MY National Anthem for MY country. I'll stand, thank you."
And she did. She was the only one who stood.
Thank heaven, she "gets it;"

So, yeah. I'm disgusted that people who were elected to office, have no respect for the country that gave them every opportunity they have. When did respect for a flag and a country that gave these people EVERYTHING become a partisan issue? Why is it so fashionable to hate where we come from? What good can possibly come of being self-hating? It doesn't work socially, why would anyone thing this is an acceptable viewpoint on a grander scale, politically?

I checked the sites for ABC Local news, NBC, CBS, NY 1, the Daily News, and the NY Post, I searched only " Pledge of Allegiance" to be general enough to find any mention of this. There was none. What a shock - NOT.

It makes me sick to see the erosion over the years of the American Spirit and ideals. In the past, I've stopped talking to people who, I found out, never bothered to vote in elections. I lost respect for them at that point, so I had nothing else to say to them. But I realized that's where it begins. We become complacent, we stop caring, and then the people who end up in office, are representative of that. This is now just an extension, a continuance of that same erosion. Perhaps we can't see it on a day to day basis, but if people measured the losses of our freedoms and rights as carefully as they measure the millimeters of that might or might NOT glaciers melting, we'd all be talking about this more than who Jack-o left his non-fortune to.

I'd like to say I am surprised...but im not. I have not felt "represented" in my own state for quite some time.

That HuffPo railed against Boehner for standing in front of a flag hanging backwards: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/16/gop-house-leaders-disresp_n_102136.html

Some samples from the comments:

Republicans are faux patriots. They owe their allegiance to the mighty dollar (which isn't so mighty these days) and they worship at the feet of their gods (aka Wall Street and multinational corporations).

We all know that the GOP stands for hypocrisy. I love the way the Republicans carry on about patriotism and the adornment of such but they have managed to bloody our flag at home and abroad by this disreputable war of choice in Iraq. A pox on them all!

This 'error' may have been intentional on
the part of Republicans.

The two-chamber human brain is very
sensitive to visual symbols.

Volunteers in psych labs who were not told
the nature of the experiment, were first shown
the Nazi version of the swastika which is turned
in the opposite direction of ancient swastikas.

The volunteers experienced physical weakness
and changes in galvanic skin response.

The same subjects were then shown pictures
of swastikas taken from ancient tombs in the
Middle East. Those swastikas are turned in the opposite direction from the Nazi swastikas.

The subjects reported that they felt invigorated
when viewing the ancient swastikas.

We hang the flag with the union to the flag's
right because that visual image gives us a
burst of positive emotion.

The purpose of the Republican's displaying
the flag with the union to the flag's left would
be to weaken the will of the observer in order to
drive the Republican message deeper.
