After battling tougher nationwide rules for automobile emissions and mileage standards for years, today automakers will join the federal and state governments and environmental activists and accept a National Program that will mandate reduced carbon emissions and increased fuel economy.
According to a press release from the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and news reports the National Program, which will “begin to take effect in 2012,” will accomplish the following:
- Put in place a federal standard for fuel efficiency that is as tough as the California program;
- Imposing the first-ever limits on climate-altering gases from cars and trucks;
- Create a car and light truck fleet in the United States that is almost 40 percent cleaner and more fuel-efficient — average of 35.5 miles per gallon — by 2016; and
- Preserve vehicle diversity.
To accomplish all this, consumers will have to pay an extra $1,300 per vehicle.
Dave McCurdy, president and CEO, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers says this is a new beginning:
What’s significant about the announcement is it launches a new beginning, an era of cooperation. The President has succeeded in bringing three regulatory bodies, 15 states, a dozen automakers and many environmental groups to the table. We’re all agreeing to work together on a National Program.
It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you single-handedly control an industry — deciding who runs the company, forcing mergers and bankruptcies. It has only cost us $23 billion, so far, to prop up General Motors and Chrysler long enough to make this grand bargain. How much per vehicle has the auto industry bailout cost?

No need to waste money on a new car.
This looks like a good time to get into the after-market parts industry.

kyle8 (Diary) Tuesday, May 19th at 10:38AM EST (link)Cubans still drive around Havana with old 1950′s American cars. and they make most of the parts themselves.
There will be a booming after market parts business and people will be keeping their vehicles a lot longer.
So even several years from now you might be able to get just what you want.
Of course that will suck for the auto makers, but they will just get some more taxpayer money so it won’t really matter.

Is letting California call the shots really the best idea?
General_Confusion (Diary) Tuesday, May 19th at 10:24AM EST (link)Just say’n, given how “well” they do with budgets, regulation, business environment and so forth.
Oh and one other thing…
• Preserve vehicle diversity.
I assume this is meant in the same way the Universities and other liberal institutions preserve diversity of thought and opinion.
For those of you towing or have families and/or transportation needs that require hauling more than two adults you may want to buy something soon as your “diversity” of choices will be very narrow soon.
Also, not that you asked, don’t tell me about the “great” vehicles the Europeans are driving because you CAN’T have them now because of the CURRENT pollution and safety requirements. I’m sure the new “improved” pollution requirements won’t delay their availability further.
Looks like the US auto industry is going on permanent welfare support. I suppose from a Democrat point of view that will be just fine.
Lastly, How much per vehicle has the auto industry cost? Dear leader says about $1300 additional per vehicle.
I’m sure it won’t be more, when has the government ever underestimated the cost of over-regulation.
I for one am very excited to pay more for a smaller less capable vehicle! Thank Dear Leader he won’t give me a choice, free markets and freedom are over-rated.
I caught that too
johnCV (Diary) Tuesday, May 19th at 11:27AM EST (link)Perhaps they are referring to vehicles of different cultural importance. You know, rice rockets, ghetto cruisers, redneck mud trucks, soccer mom vans, yuppie mobilles, etc.
Seriously though, when the hell did ‘diversity’ enter the criteria of auto manufacturing? I am soooo sick of this PC bs. Buy the vehicle that suits your needs, you can afford or just makes you happy. It looks like we will only be getting a choice of the most bland offings ever offered.

The 10,000 lb "loophole"
JoeG Tuesday, May 19th at 11:33AM EST (link)CAFE does not apply to vehicles above 8,500 lbs. They are raising it to 10,000 lbs.
If you buy a 1 ton truck or a Suburban, CAFE doesn’t apply.
This standard will kill the 1/2 ton pickup and the larger SUVs as they are now. In response many may chose to buy the new, smaller SUVs and pickups. But others will chose to go up in size instead to still get a usable vehicle.
They are either going to have to bring the heavier trucks into the standard and destroy that part of the market, or they are going to have to regulate who buys them.
Telling people they can’t buy the larger vehicle will be a huge over-reach and the squishies in the middle won’t go for it.

vettepilot (Diary) Tuesday, May 19th at 12:05PM EST (link)That’s the question people should be asking now… Packing a family of 5 into the Euro-style compact the administration wants us all to be driving (except for themselves, of course) is not feasible here in the US. One thing that people tend to forget is that our states are as big as a lot of Europe’s countries, especially here in fly-over land, and that trip to grandma’s house may take 10 hours or more of driving. It may not be so bad when that drive is 2 hours, but stretch it out to 8 with three kids shoehorned into the back seat???
JoeG, I think that you can take your statements to a conclusion that results in the death of Ford next. The F150 is Ford’s bread and butter right now, and I don’t think they’ll be able to survive losing that product.
This could be good for Ford
JoeG Tuesday, May 19th at 1:40PM EST (link)Ford may be the only company making the over 10,000 lb vehicles if 0bama has his way with Chrysler & GM.
The F150 is their bread and butter now, but this regulation could mean that the Crew Cab F350 may becomes their new bread and butter when its the only vehicle left that can carry 6 comfortably.
I noticed this doesn't take effect till 2012

Or is it both?

In order to FORCE people into buying the newer cars Democrats will enact the Red Barchetta Laws (Ref: Rush song) Of course, flying cars won’t be around but the same principle will apply in that they will OUTLAW the driving of vehicles from a certain year and prior (with some minor exceptions wiggled in for Classic Cars to appease some to get the laws passed). That won’t be the first step, of course. They will go the usual PUNISH THROUGH TAXES route first, putting Federal charges onto your States’ Vehicle Registrations and raising of Gas Taxes (with the thought that if a car gets 50/mpg – in the warped logic of Democrats – they really aren’t raising taxes they’d be “equalizing” their intake, in order to receive the same amounts they raise the level as less fuel is used — it don’t/won’t work that way, but it never stops them from rationalizing their stupidity in their minds).
