I assume this is meant in the same way the Universities and other liberal institutions preserve diversity of thought and opinion.

For those of you towing or have families and/or transportation needs that require hauling more than two adults you may want to buy something soon as your “diversity” of choices will be very narrow soon.

Also, not that you asked, don’t tell me about the “great” vehicles the Europeans are driving because you CAN’T have them now because of the CURRENT pollution and safety requirements. I’m sure the new “improved” pollution requirements won’t delay their availability further.

Looks like the US auto industry is going on permanent welfare support. I suppose from a Democrat point of view that will be just fine.

Lastly, How much per vehicle has the auto industry cost? Dear leader says about $1300 additional per vehicle.
I’m sure it won’t be more, when has the government ever underestimated the cost of over-regulation.

Actually I believe that General Motors has turned the corner now. As soon as this “Re-organization” thing gets put to bed it appears that their vehicle line-up has merit. Most models get 30 or better mpg and the Chevy Volt can get 500 to 600 mpg on a tank of gas. http://gm-volt.com/

CAFE does not apply to vehicles above 8,500 lbs. They are raising it to 10,000 lbs.

If you buy a 1 ton truck or a Suburban, CAFE doesn’t apply.

This standard will kill the 1/2 ton pickup and the larger SUVs as they are now. In response many may chose to buy the new, smaller SUVs and pickups. But others will chose to go up in size instead to still get a usable vehicle.

They are either going to have to bring the heavier trucks into the standard and destroy that part of the market, or they are going to have to regulate who buys them.

Telling people they can’t buy the larger vehicle will be a huge over-reach and the squishies in the middle won’t go for it.

First: Are the auto-makers hoping Obama will lose his re-election bid and they can convince his replacement to drop this idiocy?

Second: Is Obama trying to make sure it doesn’t affect his re-election bid by making it not do anything till After he gets re-elected?

In order to FORCE people into buying the newer cars Democrats will enact the Red Barchetta Laws (Ref: Rush song) Of course, flying cars won’t be around but the same principle will apply in that they will OUTLAW the driving of vehicles from a certain year and prior (with some minor exceptions wiggled in for Classic Cars to appease some to get the laws passed). That won’t be the first step, of course. They will go the usual PUNISH THROUGH TAXES route first, putting Federal charges onto your States’ Vehicle Registrations and raising of Gas Taxes (with the thought that if a car gets 50/mpg – in the warped logic of Democrats – they really aren’t raising taxes they’d be “equalizing” their intake, in order to receive the same amounts they raise the level as less fuel is used — it don’t/won’t work that way, but it never stops them from rationalizing their stupidity in their minds).
