During his April 14, 2009 press briefing, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs had an exchange with Helen Thomas about detainees being held at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. During this exchange, Gibbs denied that Obama “taught on constitutional law.”
Q Why is the President blocking habeas corpus from prisoners at
Bagram? I thought he taught constitutional law. And these prisoners
have been there –MR. GIBBS: You’re incorrect that he taught on constitutional law.
Q — for many years with no due process.
Really?
In a December 2007 KJFK radio interview with Christiane Brown, the same interview during which Obama promised to have his Attorney General to investigate the Bush administration — a promise he has now kept, Obama stated that he “taught constitutional law for ten years.” [Audio and a transcript of the relevant portion of the Brown interview are available at my Right Side Politics (Examiner) Column.]
This sort of makes you wonder who is lying. Here’s a hint:
University of Chicago Law School Statement Regarding Barack Obama
From 1992 until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2004, Barack Obama served as a professor in the Law School. He was a Lecturer from 1992 to 1996. He was a Senior Lecturer from 1996 to 2004, during which time he taught three courses per year. Senior Lecturers are considered to be members of the Law School faculty and are regarded as professors, although not full-time or tenure-track. The title of Senior Lecturer is distinct from the title of Lecturer, which signifies adjunct status. Like Obama, each of the Law School’s Senior Lecturers has high-demand careers in politics or public service, which prevent full-time teaching. Several times during his 12 years as a professor in the Law School, Obama was invited to join the faculty in a full-time tenure-track position, but he declined.
And yes, I was able to locate evidence that Obama actually taught Constitutional Law.
Some will say lying is too harsh. Nevertheless, Gibbs has less and less credibility every day. His denial that Obama taught on constitutional law, is no more credible than was Gibbs’ denial that President Obama bowed to Saudi King Abdullah.
Can Gibbs survive Obama’s first 100 days? Can President Obama afford to keep Gibbs around?

The_Gadfly (Diary) Wednesday, April 22nd at 12:09PM EST (link)both and neither, and which one is which is dependent on the meaning of ‘taught.’ If by ‘taught’ what you mean is that the Big 0 imparted useful information to students who were eager to learn constitutional law, then I think you’d need to go with Gibbs is telling the truth and the Big 0 is lying. On the other hand, if by ‘taught’ you mean showed up for a few lectures, collected a big paycheck, and permitted the University to check off one of its ‘diversity blocks’ then Gibbs is lying and The Big 0 is telling the truth.
Either way, I think the more informative part for observers is that they both expect you to adopt the frame of reference in which they are telling the truth regardless of what the reality of the situation is.

It was an interview with several of his students. They thought he was great. Seems Obama’s standard lecture involved involving the students, sans professor, to lecture among themselves, only to ask der professor to mediate any unseemly disagreements. Thats everbodys favorite teacher. Right? Once again, der professor was merely “present.”
