Obama Administration tries to lower stimulus expectations

Obama’s administration is spinning hard to try and lower expectations for the so-called “stimulus” bill.

Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” David Axelrod, Senior Advisor to President Obama, tried to lower expectations for Obama’s bailout boondoggle:

Signs that the $787 billion economic stimulus program is working will be obvious as work begins on infrastructure and other programs that are ready to begin around the country.

Yet, Axelrod warns, it’s going to take time for the effects to register in employment statistics and the economy is likely to get even worse before it begins to rebound.

On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs also tried to lower expectations:

SCHIEFFER: When are we going to begin to see the effects of this legislation?

GIBBS: Well, Bob, we certainly hope that this money gets moved out to the states and localities to prevent them from having to cut police officers or teachers, that the money that comes down through unemployment insurance, and certainly the tax cuts to middle-class families — we think that money can get out of the system and to people very quickly.

One caution I have, Bob — I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’ve seen this economy has gotten worse just in the last few months. The acceleration in job loss probably means that this economy is going to get worse before it gets better.

But we’re happy that Congress, in a bipartisan way, took steps to make whatever happens in this recession easier to take for the American people.

They should be backpedaling.

Irwin Stelze points out that most of the money in the “stimulus” will not be spent soon:

It seems that most of the money will not be spent very soon. About 30% won’t hit the economy until 2011, and the balance is likely to be tied up in the procurement processes of the federal and state governments until well into 2010, and beyond.

How long are people willing to wait to see some progress from largest spending package in history?

If progress isn’t seen quickly, are people willing to accept another stimulus bill?

Gibbs called it right

“One caution I have, Bob — I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’ve seen this economy has gotten worse just in the last few months.”

On November 4th the euphoria and knowledge that we’d have hope and change should have just pushed the world economy up, right?

Instead things have gotten worse since the election, but of course that is all due to Bush.

How long before the acolytes of The One figure out he's nothing but the empty suit the rest of us saw?

USNJIMRET (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 2:23PM EST (link)

Since his election, in fact just before it, he has been on a 3 plus month long game of promising the bright sun of a new day, then having his minions go out and tell us it’s more like a night lite in the dark.

Acolytes of The One

They will never admit and will have to do a replay of the Peoples Temple in 1978 to get out of the ONE what they came for.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

As long as he's sticking it to the Republicans, they won't

care how empty his suit is. His truest acolytes detest America and all it used to stand for. The more he does to bring her to her knees, the more they will applaud him.

Unless they end up going hungry and jobless themselves, they will continue to cheer for him.

they will not be hungry for a little while, but, they will remain jobless, purposely I’m sure in many cases. The name Bush does have a natural shelf life.

But they will remain jobless and hungry. They will get a check and then what? They will ask – is that it man? I voted for you and this is it?
Man I got ripped off again.

Then, izone, that is when they will come after us.

Obama didn’t disappoint them, he was forced to give part of “their fair share” to others who didn’t deserve it as much. You know, anyone who’s not an Obamanut, but who may be unemployed and getting their own check.

Obama excels at the class warfare rhetoric and plays these bums like a violin. You better know that if they even dream of blaming him for anything, he’s going to turn their discontent in another direction–and that would be us.

We all know that is coming

izoneguy (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 4:24PM EST (link)

and we are prepared

Amen, brother. We are prepared here in TN as well.

Was checking out our supply of ammo for various guns just last night. We need more. I am eternally grateful that I no longer live in a large city, but I worry about my elderly parents who still live in Nashville.

With everything that is going on, daily and sometimes it seems hourly, I wonder sometimes if this is how it was for those in Germany during the 30′s. Did they look at what was going on and tell themselves that no, no, it couldn’t be what it sounded like or looked like, surely their government was not intending to do what they appeared to be doing.

Isn’t it nice that most conservatives know their history and have learned from it?

New Jobs in Stimulus?

redst8r Sunday, February 15th at 1:42PM EST (link)

I briefly listened to a Maryland Congressional Representative this morning (Sunday, Feb 15) as she was speaking on Fox News. She noted that Maryland had some large amount of “shovel ready jobs” all approved, permitted and just waiting for the stimulus package to fund. Okay, swell. But will those jobs go to the currently unemployed?

Or will they go to the existing employees of the existing engineering and contracting firms? In other words, will these “shovel ready jobs” be new jobs for newly unemployed or ongoing jobs for the currently employed in which case there will be no new stimulus, unemployment will continue to rise and the national economic problems will continue to fester.

Any shovel ready job for the stimulas

robmikpet (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 2:11PM EST (link)

that is ready now is a lie.

I worked for a bank and many of my business clients were “roadbuilders” (infrastructure work including bridges, etc.) The process from the city, state or county looking at, approving, putting for bid, the winning of the bid, the company getting “ready” to start work including all the permits, men, equipment and material needed takes at LEAST ONE YEAR maybe more.

Any thing that is shovel ready has completed this process. In short you are right it will not add jobs, the men are there already. The locals governments are freeloading off the federal taxpayer – the same thing I know it just seems free like national healthcare.

"Shoveling" refers to moving manure from the barn floor

olsmithie (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 2:19PM EST (link)

That is all Obamanites know how to “shovel”, and they “shovel” exceedingly large quantities of same.

LaHood said the 47 transportation secretaries around the country had ready to go projects

Scope (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 4:11PM EST (link)

funny that the shovel ready jobs have already gone through the massive amounts of environmental studies, permitting, hearings and etc. I think he said that the projects have already been approved but were not started because they didn’t have the money to complete the projects. Why would anyone, even dumb Democrats start projects that had no funding? If it’s true, wouldn’t they have already awarded the bids? Are they all unionized contractors as Obama has said they must be?

This isn’t the ’30′s guys.

Are we going to take those 5,000 laid off Microsoft workers from a couple of weeks ago hand them all shovels and have them build a road?

I think not.

One thing that is lost in all of the supposed infrastructure jobs....

jazzycmk (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 3:10PM EST (link)

that will be created is that many of the currently unemployed aren’t qualitfied to work on them. That is skilled construction labor.

The unemployed admin assistance or accountant can’t just don a hard hat and go to work with a jackhammer of bulldozer.

I am just wondering how the American citiizens can file a class action lawsuit to stop most of this. I know lawsuits have been filed against the Federal Government. What if 100 Million Americans get in on a lawsuit?

0% of House Republicans voted for the bill.
7% of Senate Republicans voted for the bill.

More Democrats (7) in congress voted against the bill than Republicans (3) voted in favor.

To put in a more telling perspective:

1/2 of 1% of the votes were from Republicans in favor.

Apparently to democrats, the definition of bipartisan now is,

at least one registered Republican voted for it.

Monetary policy--not this spending bill--may end up moving the economy

jonreagan (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 2:21PM EST (link)

One thing which concerns me, but rarely seems to get discussed, is the impact of Fed easing and monetary policy which began in August of 2007.

The Fed’s interest rate cuts since that time are massive even by Greenspan standards, and are likely to be stimulative, if not inflationary. What’s entirely possible is that the economy will start to turn, and these morons will start to claim that it’s the result of their really bad spending bill…..and there really will be no definitive way to refute their claims.

That’s one reason that the issue of “generational theft” should be one which our leaders continue to hammer and drive home. Whether the economy gets worse, or begins to recover, nobody can argue that trillions in debt and unfunded entitlement obligations—which team Obama is building—are a good thing for our country.

jonreagan- Unless Geithner fires up more than his 2 living brain cells

Scope (Diary) Sunday, February 15th at 3:52PM EST (link)

the low interest rates will do nothing to move the economy in the right direction. They have been at a half percent long enough to have had an impact if I am not mistaken. While Geithner continues to throw a glass of water on a bon fire, the investors and the economy will continue to have no confidence. While Obama and the Libs continue to go on spending sprees and do everything in secret and in the dead of night, no one will gain much confidence both here and abroad in the US economy. While we have Obama in the White House and Pelosi and Reid heading up the both houses of Congress the only one that will have confidence in Obama and his Liberal cronies will be Henrietta Hughes.

If the Economy, DESPITE THIS GARBAGE SPENDING AND DEBT, manages to recover on its own accord (which might happen if the Democrats finally start talking UP the Economy rather than talking it down) then it will be incorrectly attributed to the completely unrelated Democratic Supporters Funds Replenishment Act (known as the Stimulus)…
