Obama backs away from war on terror

In his uninspiring inauguration speech, President Obama told the world we would not waver in defense of our way of life, and he told the evil doers that “our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.”

That wasn’t even three weeks ago, but it seems like a different time. Since uttering that strong rhetoric, President Obama has backed away from the war on terror as fast as he can.

It started two days after Obama became the president. Obama directed the closing of the terrorist detention center in Guantanamo Bay, even though he has no clue what to do with the terrorists detained at Guantanamo.

At the two-week mark of the Obama presidency, the president was asked in a television interview why he didn’t use the phrase “war on terror.” Obama’s Carter-like naive response was to say he believes the U.S. can win over moderate Muslims if he chooses his words carefully:

“Words matter in this situation because one of the ways we’re going to win this struggle is through the battle of hearts and minds,” Obama said in an interview with CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360.”

[. . .]

“I think it is very important for us to recognize that we have a battle or a war against some terrorist organizations,” Obama said Tuesday. “But that those organizations aren’t representative of a broader Arab community, Muslim community.”

He added that he believes the U.S. can convince Muslims “that we should be working together to make sure that everybody has got a better life.”

Obama’s “choice of words” response brings to mind the just words speech Obama stole from Massachusetts Democrat Deval Patrick. I agree that words matter, but when one’s actions speak so loudly the words can’t be heard, the words matter only to mock the speaker.

Obama continues to walk away from the war on terror at a quickening pace. Two days after Obama talked to Anderson Cooper about his choice of words, Obama ordered charges dropped against the terrorist mastermind of the bombing of the USS Cole.

In meeting with families of September 11 terrorist attacks and the 17 sailors killed in the terrorist bombing of the USS Cole, Obama made it clear that he was more concerned about the prosecution of terrorists than prosecution of the war on terror:

“The previous administration was very focused on the prosecution of the war on terror and keeping America safe from future attacks. The current administration is very focused on the prosecution of the detainees of the war on terror. The important thing for America is to find the right balance of both those approaches.”

Then, even though Obama said he will send more troops to Afghanistan as he withdraws
combat soldiers from the war in Iraq, today we learn Obama has put the brakes on more troops for Afghanistan. This step back comes even as military commanders continue to plead for more troops.

In his 2003 commentary, A Bloody March to Peace, Tony Blankley reminds us that the Islamafacists and terrorists continue wage war against us because they doubt our staying power:

  • They remember Vietnam, where we lost the will to fight.
  • They remember Beirut in 1983, where we turned tail and ran after they killed our Marines in their barracks.
  • They remember the first World Trade Center bombing in February 1993, when we turned to our lawyers instead of our soldiers.
  • They remember Mogadishu in October 1993, where we left our dead and skedaddled out of country.
  • They remember the attack on the USS Cole in 2000, where we ordered our ships to sea rather than our Marines to shore.

Obama’s walking away from the war on terror will only encourage our enemies. It is the functional equivalent of appeasement. We are no more able to successfully appease the Islamafacist terrorists, than Chamberlain was able to successfully appease Hitler.

We are involved in a long struggle. We didn’t choose this war, and we cannot back away from it. We cannot afford to be seen, or even be perceived, to falter in our determination to prevail. If we are, it will encourage our enemies and prolong the war.

…on Fox & Friends this morning, the Obamassiah has turned over what to call his non-War on Terror to various marketing people/firms.

I’m guessing they’re looking for something warmer and fuzzier since they don’t plan on actually fighting whatever they end up calling it.

for resistance to Democrat socialist policies only. Doom awaits us if Obama doesn’t get a trillion in election funding.
These people are so caught up in their own ambition and power lust that islamic terror is barely in their thought process, except as a possible electoral issue. Defense and war hardly matter to them, it may even be an irritant.

And Obama babbles about “hearts and minds” and “working together”. Platitudes comfort the liberal ego but they don’t sell on the terrorist side of the river.

Obama more insulting to Muslims et al. than Bush... Words DO matter.

Crowe (Diary) Monday, February 9th at 11:04AM EST (link)

Consider: Bush and co. went to great lengths to say that Islam was a religion of peace. They tripped over themselves to point out that we want to work with all those peace-loving Muslims and folks with blood ties to the Middle East to make clear that what we are “at war” with is not Islam or Arabs/Iranians/Syrians/Palestinians/Afghanis/Pashtuns/etc., but those radicals who “do not represent” “authentic” Islam/whathaveyou Middle Eastern peoples. The phrase “war on terror” was coined precisely to emphasize this distinction the Bush administration was SO CAREFUL to cultivate. And in the process, Bush’s decisions to go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq liberated what, a half-million Muslims and the above-listed peoples from Taliban/Hussein autocracy. No one. No one has done as much for the cause of freedom and Western-style classical liberalism in those geographic areas ever. ever…

By distancing himself from “war on terror” in the name of being nicer and less divisive, Obama has implicitly announced that “war on terror” is and always has been synonymous with “war on Islam/aforementioned peoples.” So if we’re not at war with “terror,” with precisely whom, or what, ARE we are war with, Mr. President? Or do you simply deny (refuse to acknowledge?) that we are actually at war?

Boy. Talk about giving away the farm. Words do matter, and Obama’s use of them lately reveals a profound lack of seriousness dangerously coupled with a great belief in his own hype.

Tax cheats nominated and defended for top cabinet posts, Keynesian/socialist “stimulus” bills, no sense of personal responsibility, disregard for innocent human life, and a glaring lack of seriousness or understanding wrt international issues/national defense…

We are in grave danger with this man at the helm.

“We sleep soundly in our beds only because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would do us harm Dear Leader Obama gives us leave to do so.”

Obama opens second front on War On Terror

anodized Monday, February 9th at 11:25AM EST (link)

Hear me out:

He’s opening up another front on the WOT, the carrot front. The stick is still there, we’re just holding it behind our back. And believe me I know there are plenty of terrorists not interested in carrots. They get the stick. These gestures toward not antagonizing the Muslim world as a whole are designed to get the Muslim world as a whole on our side. Then we don’t have to go over there to fight them because their neighbors have rejected their ideology of hate and rooted them out themselves.

Positive spin? Maybe, but I’m not convinced the Bush policy of bomb first, ask questions later was going to lead us to a successful conclusion.

were it somebody less stupid than Obama

E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Monday, February 9th at 11:34AM EST (link)

I might be inclined to buy into that. But he (along with his collective group of advisors whispering in his ear) is actually not a very sophisticated player in any game.

And your characterization of Bush’s policies is insulting and grossly wrong, by the way. First, ‘bomb first, ask questions later’ is a crap burger of untruth, and as for success, let me ask 2 questions: First, how many 9/11′s have we had since 9/11? Second, if Iraq does not now smell like success, then what exactly is your standard for success?

My standard for success

anodized Monday, February 9th at 3:43PM EST (link)

Is not a perpetual state of war. My standard of success is peace through mutual respect, and not just respect of military power. Now how do we get there? Bomb Muslim countries into submission? Probably not. That’ll breed another generation, maybe two of jihadis. It hasn’t worked for Israel yet.

Some of what Obama is doing is good cop/bad cop with Bush necessarily playing the bad cop. I’m not opposed to that tactic if it yields results. Some this change in rhetoric a surrender or a prelude to a surrender. That’s short sighted.

Good Lord

E Pluribus Unum (Diary) Monday, February 9th at 5:00PM EST (link)

So now Israel, along with the US, has practiced diplomacy through bombing Muslim countries?

Yeah, OK.

Mutual respect, when the other side is Al Queda. Dude, I would LOVE to play poker with you. I cheat, I lie, I bottom-deal, and I change the rules in the middle of the game. And I’ll agree to any deal you want to make, based on mutual respect. And then I’ll cheat even more.

Assuming that you mean what you say, and I’m willing to give you that, this is prime example of the ignorance that will kill us all.

Tell me, have you ever read the charter of Hamas? In it, they cite the three options open to anyone who is not Islamic.

1. Convert.

2. Submission — pay them a heavy tax and acknowledge Islam as boss.

3. Die.

Where do you see chatting and having tea parties in that list? Or a carrot party?

You cannot get anyone else, Hamas or Hezbollah or Al Queda or any other group, to play by YOUR “civilized” rules. It’s not going to happen. So what is short sighted is your and Obama’s belief that we can somehow “bond” and show mutual respect.

Yeah right.

Get over yourself. Unless you pray in the direction of Mecca five times a day, you are in Infidel. Embrace it.

Heck, the religion of peace isn’t even respectful of their own. Of the 12.701 people killed in terror attacks by said religion since 9/11/01, just how many do you suppose were non-Muslims? and how many fellow Muslims who just don’t follow the Mullah-of-the-Day?

Obama is giving new meaning to the word stupid

icbm (Diary) Tuesday, February 10th at 12:01AM EST (link)

Only someone so highly educated (formally) at institutions like Harvard and the University of Chicago could be so moronic. The average high school drop-out who works as a day laborer knows more. Obama thinks the world is one big tea party and he sits at the head of it. All he needs to do, he thinks, is smile more when he pours the Earl Grey and his Iranian, North Korean, and Russian guests will become his friends instantly.

It’s bad enough that the Left calls conservatives stupid whenever they get a chance. It’s particularly grating when they themselves are so very deeply stupid and will never realize it.

I wasn't aware I had to prove myself to you

anodized Monday, February 9th at 4:25PM EST (link)

I’m a registered Republican and a conservative on fiscal and social issues. I didn’t vote for Obama. Those statements ought to put me comfortably in the majority here. I invite you to retract your troll accusations or keep them to yourself as they’re entirely off topic.

With regard to the substantive content of your comment, let’s look at the facts: public opinion in the Muslim world of the U.S. fell during the Bush years. Is this objectively good or bad? I think it’s bad. I know some will tell you it doesn’t matter what they think of us so long as they know we will retaliate against whatever actor attacks us. That doesn’t get at the root causes of this hostile behavior, nor does it grant us security if we’re constantly expecting to be attacked. Others will tell you not only is Islam not a ‘religion of peace’ it is a religion of unending hostility and as such we need always be on offensive or at least on guard against it. I prefer to think of people as generally good, and barring that, at least generally rational. We can talk to them; we can make our case without offending them our encouraging our enemies.

Of course the Bush administration didn’t knowingly make gestures or statements with the intent of stoking Muslim hatred. They invited an imam to the 9/11 national prayer service. Shortly after Bush said, “This is a new kind of, a new kind of evil. … And the American people are beginning to understand. This crusade, this war on terrorism is going to take awhile.” Crusade? The damage done with that one statement is probably still festering. Then they dubbed the mission in Afghanistan “Operation Infinite Justice,” something really only God is capable of. They sent Karen Hughes to the Middle East on a listening tour so misguided even the Washinton Times had to take notice (Faux Pas Trifecta, Diana West, 9/30/2005). Abu Ghraib. I could go on, but I think I don’t need to.

Obama is changing tactics, changing how he describes this fight, concerned with public opinion. This after a president who famously didn’t follow polls. Bush didn’t instigate this hatred, but he didn’t have much success alleviating it. There’s room for improvement, and I’m willing to withhold judgment for now on where Obama takes it from here.

Actually we have no reason to believe what you say about yourself

obama still hasn’t said that we have to overcome our “inordinate fear” of our enemy

he’s coming close, i grant you, with his deeds, but he hasn’t gone that far yet
