Palin Makes Good First Impression

Better Than Biden

Sarah Palin made a good first impression.

A new Rasmussen Reports poll finds 53% now have a favorable opinion of Palin:

Palin earns positive reviews from 78% of Republicans, 26% of Democrats and 63% of unaffiliated voters.

[. . ]

By way of comparison, on the day he was selected as Barack Obama’s running mate, Delaware Senator Joseph Biden was viewed favorably by 43% of voters.

The following video of Governor Palin, speaking at  in Dayton, Ohio following her introduction by John McCain as his pick for vice president shows why she made such a good first impression:

Her selection just seems like a reach. I am trying to organize and make what allot of people are thinking public, that this was a mistake and we still have time to change it.

The media spent the entire 1st day telling everyone how she was dangerous and not ready. Conversely when Biden was picked the time was spent praising him

Palin oozes charisma

john_barry Saturday, August 30th at 6:42PM EST (link)

Sarah Palin oozes charisma. She is eloquent and has gravitas. She exuded confidence in her acceptance speech. This confidence is based on her rock solid conservative principles. Most Americans could empathise with Sarah and her family.

Now contrast her performance with that of Joe Biden. Biden’s speech was a throw back to the Socialist shibboleths of the 1970s whilst Obama is a gaffe machine without a teleprompter.

A Great Choice!

kiravak (Diary) Saturday, August 30th at 7:05PM EST (link)

This was not a mistake. No matter who McCain picked, there would have been criticism. If he picked Lieberman… it would have been that he doesn’t care about his own base. If he picked Romney, it would have been just him trying to cover his conservative grass roots ass (while taking flank for Romney’s criticism of McCain during the primaries). Choosing Palin is going to bring the typical view that he only picked her out of political opportunism to gain Hillary supporters. Either way McCain can’t win with our liberal press. We need Palin, someone who isn’t entrenched in Washington politics, to help bring “positive change” to our government. This could have been the best choice. Even if it brings down the argument against Obama about being experienced, keep in mind that she, as #2, has more executive experience than Obama as #1 on his ticket.

It is easy to be a liberal, it is brave to be a conservative.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.

As my former Air Force friend said, “when you’re catching flak, you know you’re over the target.”

(Yes, I know the regulars here have seen that line before… I am quoting it here in the hope that the troll will see it.)

In any event, let’s dig a bit deeper. If the GOP had really goofed and picked someone absolutely unfit for the vice presidency, let’s say John Edwards, just for a laugh, what would the Dems do?

Would they come here and warn us all that we’re making a terrible mistake?

Would they go on the attack within hours of the announcement?

Heck, NO! They’d sit back and chortle into their lattes and arugula salads, and we’d hear nary a word from them here at RS (aside from the usual trolls, of course).

So, the fact that they seem bound and determined to tell us that McCain made a blunder indicates to me that he didn’t, that he delivered–as I’ve said before–a solid punch to the solar plexus of the Democrats.

To boil it down to another epigram, when it comes to Democrats giving advice to Republicans, if they told us that stone was hard, I’d try out a rock as a pillow.

He’s 100 times the man Obama could ever hope to be.

Obama handed us another election, by being too scared of Hillary to pick her. Thanks, Barack!

And to paraphrase what I just posted on Jeff Emmanuel, what if the Governor from Alasaka was a 44-year-old MAN, father of 5, who took on corruption, etc, etc, etc, with Sarah Palin’s exact resume? (Okay maybe not the beauty pageant, let’s say he won a muscle contest or a polar bear wrassle.)

So don’t you dim-wit Dems be a-saying she’s been picked only because she’s a woman. Seems to me she’s a darned qualified HUMAN.

Let's Address This Now

OccamsRazor (Diary) Saturday, August 30th at 7:34PM EST (link)

If the media pretends they can counter act Obama’s lack of experience by defining the V.P. pick, they are sadly mistaken. This angle goes to show how flatted footed they’ve been caught, because they are inherantly bias and oppressive.

The fact of the matter is, she’s been an executive at the state level. Now, what’s MORE difficult (often times) is being an executive at the mayoral level. Because, simply, choices must be made and can be later sliced, diced, skewed, and confused. Mayorship is considered a dead end poltical avenue for this reason.

Compare this to Obama’s “leadership”. You’ll find yourself laughing out loud when you (the Big You) read, let alone LIVE the very definition of it.

Day After

BillM (Diary) Saturday, August 30th at 9:18PM EST (link)

Last night at the bar, I asked four different tattoed/pierced riot grrl types what they thought of Palin. Three in their mid-twenties basically repeated the inexperience off the table/Hillaryites won’t be fooled meme word for word. The fourth, early 30′s, looked down and almost guiltily said, “I think it’s pretty f’n cool, to be honest”.

My 74 year-old mother, her friends, and my older aunts & uncles, all non-religious, non-judgmental types (albeit have lived almost their entire lives in lily-white suburbs); who think Bush has done a lousy job, hate the Cheney/Rove nastiness & Rush/Hannity/O’Reilly screamfests, and think McCain is too old, all to varying degrees love the pick of Palin, and have indicated it’s swayed them to vote for McCain.

If the above “numbers” hold nationwide, and Palin doesn’t turn into Quayla Eaglenew, McCain will probably win.

Palin’s going to remind a lot of seniors and rural folks of their daughters and grand-daughters, and sadly or not, will also provide “cover” to vote against a liberal black man for POTUS, regardless of his non-theatening appearance and soothing eloquence.

STEVENS, J., filed a dissenting opinion, in which SCALIA, J., joined.

I’ve been reading for RedState for a couple of years and just ponied up the nerve to comment today. My regular conservative site has too many Republican commenters knocking her as the VP choice – it was killing the first political joy I’ve experienced in many months,……. so I left.

The "family first" Palin

BerkeleyGuy Saturday, August 30th at 9:43PM EST (link)

Sarah Palin made a decision without consulting her doctor to fly to the Governor’s conference in Texas when she was 36 weeks pregnant.

While on this self-promoting trip to deliver a speech, the fetal membrane ruptured.

Most women go to the nearest hospital when their water breaks. Sarah Palin decided instead to make an 11 hour flight back to Alaska. She did not inform any of the flight personnel that was in premature labor.

She was immediately hospitalized when arriving in Alaska, and labor was induced within an hour.

The “family first” Palin returned to work within 3 days of giving birth to a premature special needs baby. Is that dedication to the job, or more stupidity?

at the invitation of Gov Haley Barbour to look at hurricane plans firsthand. Excellent move. Obama places a call to Nagin. Eh.

I listened to Gov Bobby Jindal on CSPAN talking about the evacuation of New Orleans. Orderly, planned evcuation using buses & trains as could have been done for Katrina had a competent governor been in charge of the state. Medical teams, food, accomodations, everything in place. Outstanding job by Jindal, who I as much as Palin.

The convention can be delayed or it can be rearranged, etc. to accomodate the disaster in the Gulf. Palin is a Governor, she knows how to handle these disasters, an excellent chance for her to shine, also Cindy McCain who is a great humanitarian. This is an opportunity for Republicans to demonstrate competence, humanity, etc in the face of natural disaster.

This is masterful, our team will continue to demonstrate leadership and dominate the news cycle as they have for the past few days.

I dont get how

Gary (Diary) Saturday, August 30th at 9:47PM EST (link)

Any true conservative could be upset with this pick. This woman is the epitomy of what true conservatives love. She even has a streak of independence in her that attracts middle of the road voters. I have only voted in 3 elections so I dont have a long history to go on. But the fact is this women has me pumped about the FUTURE of the conservative movement. Dont get me wrong now. I love Dubya and think history will show him to be truly great. But the past 4 years I have been looking around and wondering when I could have the feeling my Dad speaks of when we talk of Reagan. It just seemed to me that there was no young vibrant stars on the horizon. But then Palin, Jindal, and Cantor have a coming out this election cycle. And I now have a feeling of overwhelming excitement over these fine Americans.

I am amazed at the talk radio callers that are worried about this woman. It is astonishing to me that they are worried about a VP pick not having enough experience when the actual Presidential candidate on the other side has less experience. Does she need an education on foreign affairs? Yes! Will she get that education from one of the finest in the business John Mccain? Yes! Not to mention the team Mccain will put together. I would rather have her learn about 1 facet of the presidency in 4 years. Than have someone learn EVERYTHING about governing on the job.

All in all I think this will all be sorted out over the next month. I truly believe she will be fully prepared to go toe to toe with Biden and come out of it looking great. That will squash all this nonsense people are talking. She has already proven herself an excellent speaker. And according to the other side. Thats all you need to be President.

Me personally, as a matter of principle, I may just sit out this election. But all in all, politically it could turn out to be the best choice for McCain. I just don’t think it was the best choice for conservatism.

Is Palin ready for friendly fire?

enrique Saturday, August 30th at 9:57PM EST (link)

One of the important attributes of a vice president is that she is in charge of taking heat to protect the boss. It might be a nice idea to test Palin during the convention by having her head over to the shadow convention in Minneapolis headed by Ron Paul.

It’s only a gallon of gas and maybe 2 hours (1 1/2 with a sweet police escort) out of her schedule and would totally put the Ron Paul supporters off their game. It would show team McCain to be above personal attacks with even the hard right and might convince some of the hard cores to give the campaign a second look for donations and grassroots activities.

The idea is floating around at least one libertarian leaning Republican blog.

Trump them? No. But her's are comparable.

mbecker908 (Diary) Saturday, August 30th at 9:59PM EST (link)

And compare quite favorably.

Just off the top of my head…

  1. She took on a state party organization as a true outsider, went after corruption within the party and got people tossed out of office and has made major reforms to the whole State organization.

Compare that to Obama’s groveling in the Cook County machine.

  1. She’s negotiated real live, real world contracts with the major oil companies and won huge concessions from them on construction of a natural gas pipeline.

Obama negotiated for the purchase of a million dollar home with the help of a convicted felon.

  1. She’s negotiated with the Canadians, with reference to the above ng pipeline.

Obama or Biden have never been at a negotiating table.

So, I would say her experience, while comparable to the two Republican Governors you mention, is also head and shoulders above both halves of the Democratic ticket.

Roll that in with the fact that both Palin and McCain are “real” people and the Dem ticket is the home to two effete snobs and you’ve got a winner.

Oh, and remember all the whining from the Dems about how Bush was sending “other people’s” kids off to war? McCain’s son is an enlisted, combat Marine who just finished his first Iraqi Tour and Palin’s oldest son Track is in the Army and getting ready for his first deployment.

You also appear to be bummed because McCain made his pick for Palin based on identity politics. Are you a mind-reader? How can you possibly know with absolute certainty what McCain was thinking when he chose Palin?

I get what you are saying about how some posts here at RedState promoted Palin from the identity politics point of view. I read them, and I do not like those comments any more than you like them. I just do not see how those posts have anything to do with John McCain picking Sarah Palin.

Activists Taking Action: Unified Patriots

We disagree, okay, but did you even read what I wrote?

ZootSuit (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 12:47AM EST (link)

Please tell me where, where in either my post above or in anything I wrote did I ever insinsuate that that Palin is not conservative?

The closest I have ever come to that is severalmonths ago I noted that as governor of Alaska she vetoed a bill that opposed gay marriage; saying (that it would be declared unconstitutional. But even then I have noted that she was strong conservative and a rising star within the GOP.

My problem with Sarah Palin is that, quite frankly, I do not think she is experienced enough for the position she has (or most technically, is about to be) nominated for.

My problem with John McCain is that he has always stressed that he would choose a candidate who is prepared “on day one” to be the President if something should happen to him and, quite frankly, Sarah Palin is not prepared “on day one” to be President if something should happen to McCain.

Indeed, as a sidebar, and I admit that I may very well be mistaken because I have only looked at the tape once, it is interesting that at her introduction in Ohio I don’t think McCain himself said Sarah Palin was qualified “on day one” to take over if something should happen to him; which, again, is what he has always said would be his first consideration.

Where I see the problem this pick poses for conservatism is that many conservatives are hailing this pick because they think Sarah Palin, a pro-life hunter (which in my opinion, is a good thing) will somehow attract disaffected pro-abortion Hillary supporters — which is the argument for identity politics. But conservatives are, and conservatism is, supposed to be opposed to such “identity politics.” Thus. when conservatives play that game, it makes conservatism look hypocritical.

And that is a bad thing for conservatism.

She's very qualified

SirGladiator (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 2:35AM EST (link)

Is the the ‘most’ qualified out of all the possible running mates? Who cares, Biden wasnt either. If the question is ‘is she qualified?’ the answer is she’s VERY qualified. A dozen years of executive experience is pretty good in a general sense, but when you look at her fantastic accomplishments, then you realize her experience is really pretty GREAT. She’s proven her leadership abilities in ways that neither Obama or even Biden ever have, and in fact her leadership skills can even be compared to John McCain’s, its a record of tremendous achievement and results, and isn’t that what elected officials are supposed to be about? Obama has no results to speak of, Biden has very little that I can think of despite the fact that he’s been in the Senate for 35 years, only McCain and Palin have major, concrete results.

We know they are both ready to lead on day one because they’ve PROVEN it, we don’t have to look to a speech they gave or a promise they made, we can just look at what they’ve already done and know that if they simply keep doing what they’ve been doing America will be much better off for having them in the White House.

After reading your other posts it is obvious that you are bummed on Palin not having enough experience credentials instead of not being conservative enough.

You and I disagree about what John McCain was thinking when he picked Palin as his VP. I am not a mind-reader, and you did not say you’re a mind-reader so unless McCain tells the public what he was thinking then we’ll never know.

Instead of just listening to a video, Zoot, you can read the McCain introduces Palin as running mate transcript

An excerpt that may offer a clue of what McCain was thinking:

She’s not — she’s not from these parts and she’s not from Washington. But when you get to know her, you’re going to be as impressed as I am.

She’s got the grit, integrity, and good sense and fierce devotion to the common good that is exactly what we need in Washington today.

(APPLAUSE)

She knows where she comes from, and she knows who she works for. She stands up for what’s right, and she doesn’t let anyone tell her to sit down.

(APPLAUSE)

She’s fought oil companies and party bosses and do-nothing bureaucrats and anyone who puts their interests before the interests of the people she swore an oath to serve.

She’s exactly who I need. She’s exactly who this country needs to help me fight…

(APPLAUSE)

… to help me fight the same old Washington politics of me first and country second.

Looks like he only got a 3-4 point bounce from convention, which is very good for R’s. Appears that the McCain VP announcement was timed perfectly.
It remains to be seen how this week’s convention being overshadowed by Gustav affects the bounce that McCain is sure to get.

It's all going to the Victory 08 thingy

It’s a separate account that McCain and the RNC set up. It’s money he can use in the general.

We can agree to disagree without being disagreeable. We may still have our disagreements about the experience of Sarah Palin and their relevance to the office she now seeks but I will say that you have never been disagreeable on this or any other subject. And although I still maintain my position on this issue and what I sincerely see as the hypocrisy of many, I sincerely apologies if I have been disagreeable.

Zoot, the Washington Post has a great

read on the process McCain went through in choosing a VP.
You may not like his choice, but after reading the article, I am much more comfortable with it. It makes very good political sense.

You may think they Sarah Palin wouldn’t be in that spot if it weren’t for being a woman. I don’t necessarily disagree. But I can guarantee you Barack wouldn’t be in his position if he weren’t a black man. That is just reality.

For me, I’ll take Palin over Barack any day and work like heck to make it a reality. YMMV.

Finally, a family oriented person has someone to put our x by. Sarah rejuvinated my hope in this election because of her integrity and her ability to express herself.

Thanks c17wife, I will read the article

I also agree with you that

The thing is, I am not willing to excuse or overlook the one because it was also the case with the other. If “electoral affirmative action” (my term but I think you know what I mean) is bad for the Democrats, it is at least as bad for the Republicans because we say we are against that sort of thing.

The campaign for liberty should embrace Palin

Freedoms Truth (Diary) Sunday, August 31st at 12:41PM EST (link)

Palin has bigger things on her plate, but Ron Paul should get out there and embrace this selection.

If he cant do that, then his crowd has just reached for irrelevence.
