As is usual with big government programs, the “Cash for Clunkers” program has some unintended consequences. This one is a direct harm to the nation’s poorest people.
A woman who was in charge of a charity was on a radio interview this morning. The charity raises most of it’s money by getting people to donate their old cars and reselling them. You’ve probably seen ads for charities of this nature. “Give us your old car to feed the poor” or similar billboards are all over the country.
Since the Cash for Clunkers program has started, donations to her charity have dropped to zero. That’s right, all the good works her organization was doing have come to a halt because Obama tried to help the car companies sell more cars.
As always, bad things happen when the government meddles in markets.

I wonder how these folks feel

They don't seem too upset yet
cclive Monday, August 3rd at 5:28PM EST (link)http://www.kars4kids.org/cash-for-clunkers.html
Who was the woman on the radio show with the charity? I have a “clunker” I’d assume give to her.
Unfortunately, I caught the middle of the interview.
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Monday, August 3rd at 6:05PM EST (link)And I didn’t get the name. I’ve got an email in to the news department to see if they’ll give me more details.

you know cclive, I have read most of your comments...
DONTREADONME (Diary) Monday, August 3rd at 9:22PM EST (link)and I must say you are turning into more of a pain in the rear end then someone who brings something to the table around here.
Everytime you comment, you are sarcastic with the whole devil’s advocate stance which serves to really tick people off because they have to deal with your supposed enlightened statements. You do about ten minutes of a google search and all of a sudden voila, you have some answer. I am asking you nicely, knock it off. You are wasting our time.
BTW, actually supplying something to the conversation is much more informative than just playing the “what if” and “I don’t know” game in the BS headings you come up with to remain around until you drop the ball. So yes, I am calling Moby on you.
BTW, this last comment you have made is an example of the sarcastic garbage I am talking about.
Not sure what the problem is
cclive Monday, August 3rd at 9:38PM EST (link)I read the post and saw the other commenter mention the Kars for Kids site, love their jingle btw, and was surprised to see they actually had a section up on the “clunkers” program. They were very level headed, citing not many cars will meet all the qualifications but that they accept just about any car. Then I realized that ultimately people have the choice and don’t have to take the “clunker” hand out and can donate to charity, sure maybe that is obvious but it struck as something perhaps getting lost in all the debate. I’m sorry you took offense at it.
What's the problem, DONTREADONME?

DONTREADONME (Diary) Tuesday, August 4th at 11:45PM EST (link)You ever get that feeling somethings up with someone? History from the old version seems a little iffy.
I have been tracking this guy for a couple days, and I just was able to come up with some of his older comments which does help seeing as his history is short due to the switch over and all.
This guy is all over the map as far as I am concerned, and given that I have a nasty habit of reading the diary then tracking the comment sections, I have been finding his comments rather two-faced or seemingly laced with condensation or sniping, but then again I guess that is what I did.
Or we can chalk up my irritation lately due to my work load. I take breaks come here read some diaries, check the wires, make quick comments then back to work. Maybe that is not a good combination for me.
Anyway, I said my peace to the feller, I did the same with elminatedebt and one other around here, and I, rest assured, will end my issue with him right here.
Next time I engage cclive, it will only be under the supervision of the adults, but I will keep watching the skies (skys?) for those silent invisble black sounding helicopters

Richard Mullins (Diary) Monday, August 3rd at 9:49PM EST (link)I don’t see anything sarcastic in his post other than you’re a bit ticked off. When it comes to older cars that going not going to be used, we should give them to charity. There’s nothing wrong with that. I personally thing you might want to apologize otherwise you seem to have the same anger that the Dems have against us. It’s not something to be proud off.

Unfortunately, when faced with a choice between giving
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Monday, August 3rd at 9:50PM EST (link)away a $1500 car and getting a deduction while avoiding the hassle of selling the old beater or getting a $4500 gift from the taxpayers, many people will chose option B.
Incentives make a real impact on charitable giving. The CFC program is incentivising people to NOT give the car to charity. Before CFC there was an incentive to give the thing away. Now, not so much.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

Leopard1996 (Diary) Monday, August 3rd at 7:05PM EST (link)Ain’t the law of unintended consequences a bitch and a half. But then again it’s not about results but it’s about intentions.

“The accumluated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, “Save Us!”….and I’ll look down and whisper, “No”…The Watchmen
Another example of the law of "unintended consequences" is...
penguin2 (Diary) Monday, August 3rd at 9:45PM EST (link)the law that went into effect Jan 1. Protecting children from possible lead contamination of products made in China. This law, in one fell swope shut down non-profit thrift stores from selling used toys, baby equipment, and childrens clothing. Most thrift stores in this country are run by charitable causes such as the Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries and childrens hospitals. Besides, the significant loss of income to the charity, the people who it hurts the most are the poor who frequent these stores. The catch-22 is if the charity does sell an “alleged item” there is some lawyer out there waiting to pounce on the hapless charity.
Appeals to Rep. Henry Waxman to revisit the issue and provide relief from these unintended consequences have been denied.

I don't think these people really care about consequences.
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Monday, August 3rd at 10:00PM EST (link)Intent is the only thing that matters to them and their intent with banning the toys sales was to “save the children”. They can do just about anything if they phrase it as saving the children and it doesn’t matter if the program even achieves the stated goal.
