Public Policy Polling today releases the results of its most recent survey in Colorado. They find that little has changed since their last poll in April: appointed Senator Michael Bennet is extremely beatable – if the GOP can find the right candidate.
More than halfway through his first year in the Senate Michael Bennet continues to sport weak approval numbers, Public Policy Polling’s newest Colorado survey finds.
Bennet has a 31% approval rating, with 38% of voters in the state disapproving of his job performance. That’s virtually unchanged from a 34/41 breakdown when PPP last polled Colorado in April. 57% of Democrats, 29% of independents, and 9% of Republicans like the job he’s doing.
Voters aren’t too fond of his potential Republican opponents for reelection either though.
40% have an unfavorable opinion of former Congressman Bob Beauprez to just 30% favorable. For Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier it’s 19% unfavorable to 11% favorable and for Weld County District Attorney [sic] it’s 18% unfavorable to 17% favorable.
Head to head contests between Bennet and the Republican trio are all close. Beauprez leads Bennet 42-39, while Bennet has a 39-35 advantage over Buck and a 38-33 one over Frazier.
Analysts currently put Bennet fairly far down the list of endangered Senate Democrats. Considering that Bennet’s polling remains in the toilet, he’s likely to move up.
And while the GOP longs for the ‘ideal’ candidate, the Colorado GOP seems to have a relatively weak bench. The good news is that it seems as if any of the candidates in the race has at least a fighting chance.
Update: It’s reported today that Colorado’s former Lieutenant Governor may be considering tossing her hat in the ring:
With none of the Republicans running against Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) catching fire, a new name has emerged as a likely Senate contender.
The Denver Post is reporting that former Lt. Gov. Jane Norton is considering entering the race. A senior Colorado Republican operative confirmed to POLITICO that she’s very interested in running, and expects her to jump in the race within the next month.
Norton has spent the last several years outside the political arena, and currently serves as the executive director of the Denver Police Foundation. She turned down several opportunities to run for elective office — including the state’s Senate race in 2004 and for the governor’s race in 2006.
One of her biggest allies could be former GOP Gov. Bill Owens, who selected her as his running mate when he ran for re-election in 2002. Owens still retains goodwill with the state’s Republican base, and an endorsement from the former governor would give her important backing in a primary.

proudgop (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 11:16AM EST (link)Is the CO GOP that much in disarray?? Still no top tier candidate here??
No offense to announced candidates but they just aren’t raising the money and Fmr Congressman Bueprez ran horrible campaign the last time ( first impressions are hard to remake)
I sorta think Congressman Coffman should run now. I still wish Bill Ownes would run; I emailed him and he said he was not interested.
The fact Ritter is free falling indicates Bennett is even more vulnerable.
Fmr Senator Cambell run again u think??
I don't see Campbell looking to return
Old_Dominion (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 12:33PM EST (link)as a member of the minority, and given his social liberalism, I can see him having some fundraising problems of his own. Beauprez isn’t exactly a high quality statewide candidate, and he didn’t even offer any coattails to Rick O’Donnell in CO-07. Your idea about Coffman, though, is a good one, IMO.
I don’t think you can find an incumbent who starts off in a more vulnerable position than an appointed U.S. Senator, but time is running short on finding a quality opponent. Fundraising needed to start earlier this year, so whoever the nominee is will start at a disadvantage–one that can be overcome, but a disadvantage nonetheless.
Cheers!

proudgop (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 1:36PM EST (link)Coffman should run he already was elected statewide, served in Iraq, been tested, and has fundraising power

It frustrates me that Ownes won’t run. He was so popular and yet he left party in disarray.
Either that or I wish we weren’t having a primary for Gov ( I like McInnis) so I wish Senate Minority leader took look at this race
Any Mayors in state that could run?

No way.
NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 6:27PM EST (link)I really like Mike Coffman, but he has yet to finish a term to which he’s been elected. He’ll be an ideal selection to go after Udall in 2014, but it just doesn’t make sense right now.

Why does that matter?
RandomGuy (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 9:06PM EST (link)He’s already been State Representative, State Senator, Secretary of State, and State Treasurer. He’s extremely experienced. Any one of these positions would make him a decent Senate Candidate. His one-term in the house is just a bonus.
That said, I think frm. Lt. Gov. Norton is probably at least of good as a candidate, and she won’t have to give anything up. So I’m inclined to support her unless I’m given a good reason not to.

Experience?
NightTwister (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 10:23PM EST (link)Don’t you actually have to like, you know, DO the job for which you were hired before you can count it as experience?
Mike Coffman was the only oversight into Bill Ritter’s administration that we had. Rather than resign early enough to ensure an election to replace him as Sec of State, he held on and Ritter was able to appoint his replacement. He’s jumped from one job to the next without finishing anything. If he ran for Senate now, I’d have no confidence whatsoever that he’d finish that job.
Look, I like Coffman. He’s doing a great job in the House right now. I’d really like him to stay there and continue doing it.
I still think Frazier is the best candidate out there. He’s not beholden to special interest groups and is the sort of limited-government, personal-responsibility guy people around here are always talking about needing more of.

proudgop (Diary) Tuesday, August 18th at 10:45PM EST (link)Listen, todays politics are so different with youtube following candidates 24/7 and Frazier is nice candidate but he has not been raising necessary funds. I don’t even think he has 150,000 COH and he has been an announced candidate for almost 6 months
I think Norton and Coffman are our best bets. Too bad Owens won’t step up
You can tell who's not from Colorado ...
MtVirtus Tuesday, August 18th at 11:59PM EST (link)…With their unrealistic analyses of this race. Night Twister is right on. Coffman isn’t going anywhere, and shouldn’t.
Norton … Norton? (Cue Honeymooners laughtrack) When I showed my wife the story in today’s Denver Post, she replied without hesitation, “Are we trying to put out all the most bland candidates we can?” This blogger also makes some essential points: http://rockymountainright.com/?q=node/960
Beauprez? Seriously? Just think 2006 & the horrible campaign … he lost freaking Weld County … that should NEVER happen for a Republican in this state!
Owens isn’t going to run. That’s wishful thinking. He’s making too much money.
The choice seriously is between Ken Buck & Ryan Frazier. Don’t underestimate Frazier. He’s been in the race for 4 mos, not 6. Yes, his 1Q of fundraising was less than stellar. But his candidate profile is nearly ideal for beating Bennet. What a great contrast! And the Left is positively afraid of him … Buck isn’t bad, either.
Frazier has been twice elected for Aurora city council by a voting constituency of about 300,000 people … no small potatoes. His business credentials, his military background, his education reform background, his pro-liberty message, his tremendous ability on the stump … don’t discount him.
There aren’t any mayors better qualified. Our state senate minority leader Josh Penry is much better suited to run for state office and take on Bill Ritter. Scott McInnis has shown himself of late to be a loose cannon and a sub-par campaigner — he may have been a more credible candidate for U.S. Senate, but we’ll never know now.

Speaking of "unrealistic"
RandomGuy (Diary) Wednesday, August 19th at 7:34PM EST (link)Could you please explain to me how people with no money, almost no name ID, and few connections are going to be better candidates then people who have all these things?
Because you’re basically saying that.
Draft Mitch Daniels for President ’12
Realistic as can be
MtVirtus Wednesday, August 19th at 10:40PM EST (link)Or they can be looked at as people who will spend money more effectively, have growing name ID, a large and growing volunteer base, and are building connections at a fast rate.
You have to know the recent history in Colorado to appreciate why Frazier & Buck have better odds of taking out Bennet than Norton or Beauprez, who are near or at their ceilings and not going to inspire the conservative base to action.
Colorado Republicans and independents tend toward the small-government, libertarian side. This core group is especially excited by Frazier.
The approach of the guy with lots of money and high name ID and the most connections led us to the Coors debacle of ’04 & the Beauprez train wreck of ’06. It’s the easy way out, but not necessarily the best identifiers for a campaign with momentum toward victory.
I appreciate where you’re coming from, but if we don’t give Frazier and/or Buck a chance, and decide to coronate a Norton or Beauprez, I believe we’re headed for a repeat of the recent results in this state.
On the other hand, an inspiring figure like Frazier — whom the Left fears most of all — has the right message, the right profile, the right bio, and the right intangible traits to prevail against Bennet in the political environment we’re likely to see next year. Is he headed uphill? Yes. But let’s not throw him overboard because his starting line is further back, no matter how quickly and impressively he’s progressing.
Maybe we’d do better to convince conservative funders to get off their wallets and get behind a promising new commodity like Frazier — rather than complain that he wasn’t given the benefit of the old guard’s fundraising lists and give up on him — we wouldn’t even have to have this debate.
Would the Red State faithful abandon Marco Rubio because he’s down 20 points to Crist and according to conventional wisdom doesn’t have as good a chance to win the seat? And Red State has pulled together a fundraising drive for Frazier … at least not yet.

What MtVirtus said.
NightTwister (Diary) Thursday, August 20th at 1:43AM EST (link)But I’d also like to point out how long the election primary season is now. It’s still a year before the 2010 general election…more than enough time to raise sufficient funds to put up a good challenge against Bennet.
I think what frustrates me the most is folks want to get behind folks like Norton & Beauprez now because they can raise money, but after they get elected (if they do which is questionable at best), we’ll then be discussing their RiNO votes and how we need to get rid of them.
Frazier is the kind of fiscally-responsible, small-government candidate that everyone’s been talking about needing lately. He’s also the sort of GOP candidate that can pull in independents and libertarians. In Colorado, we need these people if we’re going to turn the State red again.
If people aren’t going to get out and do the work to help these sort of candidates get where they need to be, then there’s really no point to all of this, right? Personally, I’ve had enough of the old guard. It’s time for some new blood. We need to start sending folks to Washington that know how to say “No”.

MtVirtus Wednesday, August 19th at 1:19AM EST (link)And let the Red State community know what familial or formal relationship you have with Jane Norton. Until today’s Post article, I hadn’t heard so much as a peep about her as a possible candidate. I don’t see the party faithful clamoring for her. Maybe I’m missing something, though.
Virtus tentamine gaudet
Support
proudgop (Diary) Wednesday, August 19th at 10:58PM EST (link)Perhaps, we should ask why you are against her?
1. She has been tested at state level and state level identification
2. She would appeal to females ( something could help party in fall)
3. She can raise cash
4. comes off very well and has education background which could go toe to toe with Bennett on his supposed strong suit
Burden of proof
MtVirtus Thursday, August 20th at 3:24PM EST (link)The burden of proof is on you — facts and analysis, please, not repeated talking points….
1. She ran on the coattails of popular incumbent Bill Owens in 2002, her only electoral experience. How is that “tested”? How much more name ID does she have than others in the field? How much did name ID help Coors in 2004?
2. How many female votes would she win by virtue of her sex that other candidates would not win? How many non-traditional Republican votes would she turn off because she doesn’t have Frazier’s charisma, message, and background?
3. How do you know she can raise cash? How much, and from whom?
4. She does come off “very well” … what is her education background? How exactly would it help her “go toe to toe with Bennett [sic]“, in a way that Frazier’s background and message on education would not?
But these 4 points still leave many other questions unanswered, including: Where does she stand on the key issues of the day? What’s her message? What are her core principles? What does she diagnose as the problem that caused Republicans to lose Congress in ’06? Why did she embrace the “McCain Republican” direction in ’07-’08? What makes her the kind of US Senator we want in office? Do we just want someone with a Republican label, or do we want something more?

Reasons to oppose
pfarrer (Diary) Thursday, August 20th at 8:20PM EST (link)Gee, I don’t know, how about the fact that she sided with the Democrats to support the largest tax and spending increase in state history against the will of 90+% of Colorado Republicans? Or is that just a minor detail we’re going to gloss over?
No, we should ignore that. After all, she’s female (that was what really cinched Hillary’s primary victory and McCain-Palin’s massive showing among women) and she can theoretically raise money. Who cares if we get another Arlen Specter or Susan Collins?
Almost forgot that one
MtVirtus Thursday, August 20th at 11:58PM EST (link)You’re right, pfarrer. Her support of Ref C is a specific point that slipped my mind as I was posting. It fits right into my theme.
But hey, she’s a woman … yeah, right. Norton is not the conservatives’ choice. You can make that argument for Frazier or Buck, though. Heck, even Beauprez came out against Ref C. But Norton?
Virtus tentamine gaudet
I disagree
proudgop (Diary) Friday, August 21st at 12:36AM EST (link)Frazier has been a piss poor fundraiser and so has Buck
Frazier has been announced for almost 5 months and only has 125,000 COH thats not impressive at all. He could be the best candidate in the world but how many people go from councilman to US Senator? I wish he would run for Congress seat instead; go challenge Perlmutter.
I want to win this seat back I don’t think Frazier can do it JMO
I think Norton could appeal to many moderate voters who sadly voted for Obama
Are you kidding?
pfarrer (Diary) Friday, August 21st at 3:39AM EST (link)Norton’s ultra-strident views on social issues guarantee that she wouldn’t pull a single moderate voter. She’s even more strident than Ken Buck or Marilyn Musgrave on those issue and would terrify independents.
Couple that with her liberal, big government views on fiscal issues and you have a recipe for disaster. No amount of money will salvage that.
Finally, for you out-of-staters who may not be clear on Colorado’s system, Norton was not elected separately from the Governor candidate. She was an afterthought that was tacked onto Bill Owens’ ticket and has never raised money herself in her life. Bill Owens has proven that he can raise money, Jane Norton has not.
Let's hope we can filter some of these candidates out...
esy16 Thursday, August 20th at 1:33AM EST (link)If Norton were to throw her hat into the ring then there would be 7 likely or confirmed candidates for this 1 seat. The largest immediate problem in this situation is trying to get down to 1 candidate during the State Assembly/State Convention.
I agree with NightTwister that Coffman needs to stay in his House seat for now. I will disagree on Frazier as I am thus far unimpressed but time could change that. Frazier can give A speech well. I have heard him speak on 3 separate occasions and he has given, verbatim, the exact same speech on every occasion and I have never had the chance to hear him field questions. He’s also liberal on some social issues which will dampen his appeal to conservative primary votes and donors. Really none of the 7 candidates are all that impressive but hopefully the GOP can eventually rally around 1 of them because Bennet is going to have a massive fund-raising advantage. He is weak though and his support of a public option will be a major area of contention for his eventual opponent.
Bob Beauprez has the highest name recognition of the announced/likely candidates but also ran literally the worst campaign in the nation when he challenged Ritter. I pray that he has learned a few things about running a campaign if he emerges as the GOP challenger to Bennet.
Ken Buck looks to be a good candidate but of course name recognition and fund raising will be hurdles for him. Personally he is my choice right now.
Agree and disagree ...
MtVirtus Thursday, August 20th at 3:14PM EST (link)7 candidates is too many. At least 2 of them could bow out tomorrow, though, and almost nobody would notice.
On Frazier, I obviously disagree. Except for his exploratory committee’s one quarter of fundraising numbers early in the process, I’m not sure what there is to be unimpressed with.
Liberal on social issues? You mean, he’s not opposed to government employee benefits for same-sex couples? That’s hardly a reason to throw him overboard. I am on the socially conservative side of the spectrum, but I hope you’d agree with me that 2010 isn’t a time to run on social issues — especially here in Colorado.
Haven’t seen him field questions? Go to my site (bendegrow.com) and search for ‘Ryan Frazier’. I’ve linked and embedded videos of a few of his interviews, and included a write-up of an interview another blogger and I conducted with him.
Ken Buck isn’t bad, either. Both he and Frazier have been working hard and good conservative messages overall, but Frazier is more inspirational. I have concerns about Buck’s views on hate crimes legislation, though that alone isn’t a deal-breaker. I’m curious, though, whether you think Buck’s views on hate crimes harms him as much or more with the conservative base as Frazier’s views on same-sex government employee benefits.
A bigger key will be how the GOP decides to address and frame immigration. Between this issue and his strong championing of school choice, Frazier has the opportunity to reach out into a non-traditional Republican constituency for votes. Many Hispanics are not thrilled with Bennet.
We have no quarrels about Beauprez.
We need to rally around a frontrunner at some point. But Night Twister is correct that it’s still early in the process, and we need to push for the type of candidates we want to see while there’s still time.

Update
esy16 Sunday, August 23rd at 4:45AM EST (link)An update for those who might still be checking in on this:
Sources indicate that Jane Norton will indeed be running and thus Bob Beauprez will not run. I honestly don’t think that Norton can win the primary but an endorsement from Owens (who knows how likely that is) could make things interesting.
Meanwhile, Republican donors are staying on the sidelines while Bennet raised $1.2 million last quarter with the majority coming from out-of-state sources like David Stern, Commissioner of the NBA. The Colorado GOP better figure this thing out quickly or we might as well hand Bennet the seat back again.
Colorado GOP
Lloyd Davis (Diary) Sunday, August 23rd at 5:12AM EST (link)The Colorado GOP is living in another reality. They reelected their chairman Dick Wadhams even after he presided over Republicans losing the Presidential vote, a Senate seat and a House seat. But don’t worry because:
‘‘Despite the outcome of the last election, I think the party was pleased with the fact we are no longer in debt,’’ Wadhams said, adding that the state party was $600,000 in the red when he took over in 2007.
Everytime an office opens up they turn to the sane candidates that have lost before. Will they ever realize the people don’t want them?
Let me see. Democrats are destroying the country and we’re supposed to be happy because the party is out of debt( also out of nearly every state-wide office in Colorado).

What surprises me more here though is your comment,
Yet in this Senatorial campaign, all of the people running (including Norton) are newcomers to this race. So which is it?
As for raising money, I know of a lot of donors that are holding back to wait to see who comes out of the primary. Money will not be the issue this time around. Its the message that’s important, and we have to make sure we have a candidate that puts the right message out there. I believe there’s at least one already in the race that can do that.

Being out of debt is the beginning of winning elections. Digging out of the hole will take some time. We aren’t going to have instant results. Colorado Republicans have taken a severe beating since 2006. Things appear to be turning around now, but we will have to be patient.
If you haven’t seen the right message, you haven’t been looking. Buck and Frazier are both solid conservatives, and would work to turn things back around in Washington.

Lloyd Davis (Diary) Sunday, August 23rd at 9:10PM EST (link)It will take time. I am patient and know we can’t have instant results. Unfortunately many in the leadership nationally are too willing to compromise. That’s the danger we have because any ground we give up to the liberals will be very hard to get back.
The Left will try to gobble up as much as they can as fast as they can. When that doesn’t work, they will take it a piece at a time through compromise.
We need candidates that will stand up and draw a line in the sand. If they just want to get along, they can go away. It is a matter of principle. Bipartisanship will just get us beat to death.

I am from New England. I dont consider myself a social conservative because that term is tainted. But a party that stands for nothing more than “fiscal repsonsibility” loses its heart. Unfortunately many in the leadership nationally are too willing to compromise. That’s the danger we have because any ground we give up to the liberals will be very hard to get back.
