The race to succeed Senator Mel Martinez in the US Senate is about to get a new entrant:
U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Jacksonville, confirms that she is launching an exploratory campaign for U.S. Senate, and said an internal statewide poll shows her comfortably ahead of any Democratic contender including Kendrick Meek.
“Experience,” she said, when asked why the 17-year U.S. House member would be a stronger candidate than Meek. “I like Kendrick and I love his mother but this is about making sure we have someone at the table when we’re talking about energy, we’re talking about education, we’re talking about jobs, we’re talking about health care.”
And likely Republican nominee Charlie Crist? “I just think the state needs more than someone who’s there to talk a great game, smile and take pictures. The key is to deliver for the people of Florida.”
If there’s one thing that can safely be said about Ms. Brown, it’s that she will never be accused of talking a great game. In fact, here she is attempting to do just that:
If Ms. Brown should earn the nomination and face off against Republican Marco Rubio, it will provide an interesting contrast:
I have no idea whether to believe Brown when she says that she polls comfortably ahead of Meek. Even if she does, Florida Democrat leaders seem likely to support Meek for the nomination. Still, if she should earn the nomination, it will be hard to make the case that Republicans needed to pull Charlie Crist away from a run for reelection as Governor, and draft him into the Senate race.

Florida's Version of Cynthia McKinney...
donnac1188 Monday, June 1st at 2:29PM EST (link)Those of us in the Bulldog/Yellow Jacket Nation are cheering…it’s absolutely wonderful for Florida to get their own version of our queen of the absurd, Cynthia McKinney! God is good!
corrine & nancy
louisiana (Diary) Monday, June 1st at 2:43PM EST (link)Corrine & Nancy should get together & discuss whose state has the
best football program. After all, they probably” know” more about football
than they do about what is best for their respective states.
I don't know about that...
Brian Faughnan (Diary) Monday, June 1st at 3:00PM EST (link)I’ll readily concede that Nancy and Corinne know nothing about how to make America more prosperous. That said, Ms. Brown obviously knows nothing about football, either.
Yes, but she only knows nothing about football

This is perhaps
redloft Monday, June 1st at 3:00PM EST (link)the greatest speech ever given on the floor of the House of Representatives.
Oh My God!!!
Doc Holliday (Diary) Monday, June 1st at 3:03PM EST (link)We could run Tom Tancredo or Bob Dornan and win! Why would we possibly go for Crist?
Molon Labe!
Frankly...
Brian Faughnan (Diary) Monday, June 1st at 3:16PM EST (link)There’s always the chance they won’t nominate Brown.
They’re the evil party, after all. We are the stupid party.
Oh, I Think The Odds Are Good Meeks Would Beat Brown...
IJB Monday, June 1st at 3:20PM EST (link)…in the Dem Primary.
I think even FL Democrats can figure out which of those two is more “telegenic”.
That said, either’s going to go down to *whoever* the GOP runs.
(And, FTR, I suspect McCollum also has the edge on the Gov’s race, despite all the naysaying and doom-talking to the contrary…)
I'd be surprised
redloft Monday, June 1st at 3:37PM EST (link)if Rep. Brown actually runs against Meek. She is very close with Meek’s mother. This whole twist is very strange.
The fact that Corrine Brown was ever elected is a pox on the electorate of her district...nt

No shame in Politics
Chieftain1776 (Diary) Monday, June 1st at 3:27PM EST (link)Take a look at Corrine Brown’s various scams:
http://www.capitolhillblue.com/Aug1999/081699/criminalclass1-081699.htm
“In just seven years in Congress, Rep. Corrine Brown has eluded creditors, filed false financial disclosure reports and lied to the Internal Revenue Service.
“She cons people, pure and simple,” says Sheryl Wilson, a former travel agency owner in Tallahassee who knew Brown. “I don’t think she has an honest bone in her body.”
And there’s much much more in the link.
If I did those things in my neighborhood I wouldn’t be accepted as Neighborhood Watch volunteer let alone political office. And these hacks run–and get re-elected easily– to high office.
Kendrick Meek hasn’t so far been caught in a scandal but he basically inherited his seat from his mother when she retired 5 years ago.
There’s no shame from either side– the GOP also has its share of Ted Stevens’. But interesting how we hear always about them and they’re always (rightly) enough to derail their campaign.
Politics is hopeless.
We could only hope she would get nominated.
jeffreywturner (Diary) Monday, June 1st at 4:50PM EST (link)Her own commercials and campaign speeches would be the best advertising the GOP could hope for. The GOP nominee could just send all of his campaign money to other candidates accross the country who actually might need it.
