Deval Patrick Takes Welfare Back to the 1970s

If You're on Welfare, Massachusetts May Give You a Car, Insurance, AAA Membership

Democrats often tell us that one critical difference between the two parties is that the Democrats are more giving and compassionate. I’m not sure if that’s true in general, but it’s true in at least one important respect: Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick is giving Republicans a huge political issue.

The State of Massachusetts faces a severe budget shortfall, and Governor Patrick is using nearly $1 billion in porkulus cash and reserve funds to keep the state running a few more months. Yet despite being in dire fiscal straits, Patrick is giving free cars to welfare recipients:

In Gov. Deval Patrick’s Massachusetts, if you’re on the dole, you may be eligible to get a free car. So much for the budget Armageddon they keep talking about at the State House.

Let the taxpayers worry about those billion-dollar deficits. If you’re on welfare, come on down!

Nice enough that the layabouts get a free car – plus the state picks up the tab for insurance, excise tax, title, registration, inspection, and approved repairs. The absolute frosting on the cake is a free AAA membership…

Supposedly, these free welfare cars will enable the non-taxpayer to get a job. If they lose the job, the state comes down hard on them – we the taxpayers will not reimburse the cost of insurance after the first six months. If the client quits work or is laid off during the first 12 months, all transportation benefits end, but the client will still keep the car.

If I didn’t check to confirm this is true, I would have thought it was a joke. How can Massachusetts justify such handouts while it’s unable to pay its bills? It seems that one answer is the federal ‘stimulus’ bill, which is allowing the state to overcome the shortfall and continue to provide programs like this one.

I live in MA, it is true. Do you understand why RedState is my favorite website and I love the daily emails?

I have the state document if anyone wants me to post it, let me know. I found it on radio station website.

Attention MA voters!

If you flee MA to escape this madness please, when you arrive in your new home STOP VOTING FOR DEMOCRATS!

My God, will they ever learn?

I vote for myself rather than vote for a dem. I don’t know what’s wrong with the rest of the state. It’s scary, we have less than 10% republicans in our state legislature. I always get dems. I have never voted for one of them. I write my own name in instead.

2008 Kerry & Markey had opponents, they were RINOs but I voted for them anyway, they had no chance.

Did you read about Kennedy family fighting over his seat? As if they can inherit it, it’s an elected position.

This is so sad.

Seriously

red4ever (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 11:15PM EST (link)

When I heard about this, I just thought they were going to get government cars. They can use them while on welfare, but the state owns the car. This was bad enough. I did not realize they were a GIFT. I want a fully paid for car. Even if I have to pay for insurance, it’s still a good deal.

What’s the over/under on when the first person sells their “free” car and demands another one?

Is this a joke?

My co worker complained today because her transmission went out. It’s gonna cost $ 2300!!! She ought to just move to Taxachussetts.

Kayla the "worker" in that sentence is the problem

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 12:13AM EST (link)

She won’t qualify for TANF to be elgible to apply for it..

Jobs?

1stRichard (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 12:28AM EST (link)

In most every town and city the largest employer is the government of that town or city. I just got done standing in line for 3 Hr for employment, they had one opening. Trust me you do not want to move here unless you are a big government worker. It’s no joke.

Stimulus small print

jeepnpat1 (Diary) Thursday, May 7th at 11:30PM EST (link)

This makes me wonder what the fine print is that comes with the stimulus money. Perhaps part of it is to purchase Chrysler or GM vehicles in order to make a quota. This would certainly help them ‘look’ like they are keeping afloat. It would also help the dems keep the UAW in business and since they are going to be the primary owners with UAW in both these companies.

My other question would be how quickly will these cars depreciate in value? Even if someone were to get a free car and try to turn around and sell it they won’t get much for it. So the lost revenue only goes to Chrysler/Government Motors.

jeepnpat1 I think (not sure) the cars are usually donated nt

y'all are the ones that praised the welfare cuts

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 12:10AM EST (link)

I wrote about this before when you were praising all the welfare cuts and I was saying why is that better than what we have now where they buy a car, provide subsidized daycare for children, have tons more caseworkers and offices, and the recipeints are still on public assistance. It’s even more and bigger government and now mom and baby/kids are seperated too. Sure maybe AFDC/TANF payments are lowered but look how much the state is spending on other stuff and I’m sure more especially with daycare. They still recieve AFDC payments too if they are in school. If they don’t recieve a car they will provide bus passes or even taxi service. They provide weekly gas cards too. After I had a car wreck seven years ago I called a taxi to get to school twice. The second day he told me to go apply for TANF they would pay for it, that he takes TANF recipients to work all day long. Sure enough they did. This isnt’ just MA any of the welfare reform type of states do this program. Look at workfare or welfare to work.

Now I will say as single parent transportation has been one of my biggest struggles. It’s sooo hard without a car. I don’t think the gov should give out cars but if they are going to help with something I think a car will improve a family’s earning ability and life a lot better than free preschool or many other gov programs.

mom2oneson, I'm not clear on your meaning

tcgeol (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 1:58AM EST (link)

Why is the prior cutting of benefits causing this problem?

This whole mess wouldn’t be a problem at all if there was no such thing as “welfare” in any form, which is the way it really should be. Sure, states have the power to provide money if they choose, but there shouldn’t be a dime of federal money used.

Just your typical bitter gun- and God-clinger

Even the Left admits we’re Right

I don't know about the history of welfare

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 2:29AM EST (link)

but I know these “welfare to work” programs etc are supposedly there to get women off of cash assistance. I don’t understand when I hear the praise of how welfare was reduced because there are less women on AFDC/TANF. So a woman is not on AFDC/TANF but she is recieving taxi service or a car like above, she works a min wage job, has 4 kids in daycare and pregnant with another and daycare is paid for all of them, still recieves food stamps and medicaid and possibly housing assistance. She will also keep recieving cash if she is in school vs working or looking for a job. Why is taxi service and subsidized daycare for 5 and work uniforms and gas vouchers and everything else a better alternative than AFDC? It just makes no sense to me. I’m sure it costs the govenrment much more too and the kids aren’t even with the mother now.
The amount of gov jobs it creates is huge too for welfare to work and subsidized daycare. Not just the daycare but the workers that approve the subsidy. A woman would be forced to put her children in daycare just to go through the process to be approved for TANF payments because the welfare to work office requires so much. I don’t know how anyone over 30 could possibly keep up with it. I bet what is going on is that young women that are kind of ambitious anyway are the ones that use it and ones that can’t keep up are just worse off. It has definately stopped being the safety net it was meant to be.

correction

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 2:43AM EST (link)

I know now about MA, maybe they don’t have strict requirements to recieve cash assistance. I know here the system as been praised and applauded because of how effective it is on reducing welfare. I saw lots of young women but not older women that probably have even energy to earn a living and a much much less chance of finding a husband to provide for them. I think it just cut people off that needed it and provides tons more government jobs.
What I really don’t understand is how we can praise no afdc/tanf when that person is getting daycare/taxis/etc. Why is it better for the gov to be paying daycare for 5 and transportation with food stamps and medicaid instead of an AFDC payment with food stamps and medicaid.

even= even less energy.., sorry :) nt

Outside of the sheer economic stupidity of this...

vettepilot (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 12:16AM EST (link)

there are so many other problems it’d take 36,000 miles to list them all. First, who’s paying for the gas? These people are on welfare, so they’re presumably not earning a substantial (any) income, so I doubt they will be… Is the state of MA going to be on the hook for when one of the giftees has a lapse in judgment and mows down a pedestrian while driving drunk? What if the giftee has a history of DUI? You can darn well bet that if it happens, any potential plaintiff is going to know that the state is the party with deep pockets!

Besides, doesn’t this program only encourage the destruction of the environment? Shouldn’t we be encouraging these people to take public transportation instead?

they give out gas cards

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 12:25AM EST (link)

If they are getting a car they are either working or in school or looking for a job..

The supposed idea behind this is

mom2oneson (Diary) Friday, May 8th at 12:23AM EST (link)

they are helping the mothers get an education and work and get off welfare. I think it’s just a way of providing more caseworkers and daycare workers with jobs.
It’s just backwards because it costs the state thousands of dollars maybe per month to supposedly get someone off welfare (TANF) in the future and there is no obligation for it to be long term. Someone can quit, not stay in school, etc and the worse penality is their TANF will stop. TANF isn’t very much to begin with so it’s not that big of penalty. There aren’t penalties like that for food stamps or medicaid. If there is a medical condition (read pregnant with dr’s note..) they do not have to work or be in school either. It seems like there are lots of out of wedlock births too from what I saw. I think subsidized daycare is so backwards too. Someone is not “independent” if the state is paying their daycare.
