After Stevens, Libby, Burns, etc. Republicans should have long ago realized that being polite and following the rules of etiquette and “comity” against bad faith operators is always going to be a losing proposition.

So here’s my advice to John Yoo and the rest of his fellow legal counsel to the Bush Administration who are being targeted by this; go in with swords drawn.

Name Democratic names. Burn bridges. Attack, insult and question your questioners’ intelligence. As painful as this may be for you, make it a 100 times more painful for them.

And the GOP needs to present a united front in defense of the policy, PUSHING every day the idea that Congress voted for this.

Congress authorized it.
Mostly Democrat congresscreeps, too.

In fact, one of the Democrat “legislators” was troubled that the measures might not be harsh enough. We all know who that was.

When you choose to make Enemies of the People out of one possible base of support in the wake of a possible enemy attack, how can the Administration expect Republicans to rally around the President after such an attack? Oh, there would be a rally to the flag effect, but afterwards, the Republicans would round on Obama like a school of hungry pirhanas.

This movement for show trials and investigations is a short-sighted as it is stupid.

The Jihad will, at long last, come knocking. Things are looking black in Pakistan, and Obama has made a poor bed in Afghanistan. Allow me to explain.

Obama has chosen neither to win nor lose there. Rather, like Lyndon, McGeorge Bundy, MacNamara, and Westmoreland in 1965, he will do just enough to not lose. This will begin to rend the Democratic anti-war coalition that gave him his margin of victory. In addition, ordinary Americans will wonder what is going wrong in Afghanistan and why we aren’t winning.

There will come a point where Obama’s magic begins to wear off with the voters. Two critical things will begin to happen: Republicans will abandon him on the war. Why, you ask? Obama has broken the bargain between the parties that the Enemy was Al Qaeda. Now Obama is going after Republicans with these Show Trials.

This shows you just how stupid and shortsighted this Administration is when it comes to war. Obama is willing to set off a domestic political crisis which could undermine the conduct of the war for partisan gain!

This is a President who is contemplating a huge, distracting public series of Show Trials that will distract the Nation. The Republicans will, of course, follow an Eastern Front strategy similar to the Wehrmacht in retreat.

These Democrats, this generation, can only think of the partisan benefit that may accrue to their party. And the problem is, the whole thing will backfire on them. Palin, Romney, and Gingrich will sieze on the “Do Nothing Democrats” as they crisscross the country.

I wrote in my blog that Obama had reached his zenith and had decided to overreach. I will be proven right.

Rarely (if ever) are Americans “angry” when our national security is too “harsh” on obvious enemies that wish to do us harm. They are much more likely to be angry at too tepid a response to those who want to destroy us.

Let’s bust on Bush. No one will stand up and say “Hey Pelosi, what did you know and when did you know it?” Ooops, someone did, now what?
