Sarah Steelman Shows Why Republicans Shouldn’t Trust Labor Unions

They Might Like You Today, But They'll Knife You When They Get the Chance

Sarah Steelman is one of two contenders for the Republican nomination to face Democrat Robin Carnahan in Missouri’s open Senate seat next year. (Roy Blunt is the other.) To the surprise of absolutely no one, Jimmy Hoffa was in Missouri today to endorse the Democrat Carnahan:

Robin Carnahan appeared with Teamsters president Jim Hoffa in KC this afternoon after picking up the union’s endorsement for the Senate seat being vacated by Kit Bond.

Does this seem like a complete non-story? It would be, except for one thing. Sarah Steelman used to be a supporter of the labor movement. In her 2002 Senate race, she was endorsed by the UAW, the SEIU, and other unions. She received multiple donations from union leaders. And prior to that – in March, 2000 – she appeared at an event with Jimmy Hoffa and then-Governor Mel Carnahan (Jean Carnahan’s father). By the time of this rally, Carnahan had long since declared his campaign against incumbent John Ashcroft, so Steelman was appearing with Jimmy Hoffa and the Democrat Senate candidate. From Westlaw:

Labor leaders say they are expecting strong support from the Springfield community.
By Tamlya Kallaos
News-Leader

As Teamsters leaders from Springfield and Washington, D.C. pieced together final details of today’s rally for working families, they said the event is historic for Springfield.

The presence of James P. Hoffa is momentous in itself, said Carin Zelanko, Teamsters assistant director of the corporate and strategic initiatives office. Hoffa is usually front-and-center in national labor conflicts.

Today, though, he’ll be in Springfield to speak at Hammons Student Center, spreading the message that Teamsters will fight outsourcing to save union jobs at Associated Wholesale Grocers plants in Springfield and Kansas City. Associated on Friday declined to comment…

*Key speakers: Jim Kabell, business manager of the local; Gov. Mel Carnahan; state Reps. Craig Hosmer and Mark Wright; state Sens. Sarah Steelman and Joe Maxwell.

Steelman benefited from her association with the labor unions early in her career, but in the end they’ve returned to form.

Republicans are like abused children when they deal with unions;

Achance (Diary) Friday, April 17th at 7:14PM EST (link)

they always think that if they’re just a little nicer to the unions, the unions will stop beating them. A Republican can do a little business with police and corrections unions since they’re usually a pretty conservative lot and rarely affiliate with other unions. No other union can be trusted by ANY Republican, but there’s always a Republican sucker ready to try to get along with them.

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 4:23AM EST (link)

In fact, I kind of suspect that you’re a paid Blunt campaign staffer, really.

If not, then I find it kind of interesting how selectively forgiving you are. Steelman is alleged to have once been endorsed for state senate by some unions, but Roy Blunt has a far longer history of big government waste and anti-free trade votes.

I dunno…as I said, your outrage seems selective at best.

I don’t know much about this race. I guess candiates will take endorsements from whoever offers.

But if Steelman really thought she could make inroads with the SEIU or the UAW or if she thinks they are reputable, well intentioned organizations, it would definately make me pause if I were from Missouri.

Based on what this site has shown us about her previous political moves, I don’t trust her any further than I can throw her.

Whatever the problems with Roy Blunt, I’ll take her in a minute against this “unknown”, who gives off the unmistakable stench that she’ll “grow” in office.

What has this site shown about “her previous political moves?” Please direct me to the diaries so I can investigate their claims myself. I’m really interested. I must admit that I’d be very disappointed if Steelman were not what I’d hoped she is.

But I’ll say this, too – if Roy Blunt is really the best we can do in Missouri, my campaign contributions are going elsewhere. I may send Blunt some well wishes against Carnahan, but that’s about it.

As despicable as Blunt’s record in congress is, Missouri Republicans should be utterly ashamed if he is the best candidate that they can field.

Funny how this never came out while she was the conservative savior running against Hulshof. Who’s backing her, anyway?

You're right...it is funny

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 4:16AM EST (link)

You’re right gimlet, it is kind of funny that this never came out in a heated primary that Steelman narrowly lost just two years ago. And that’s why I’m all the more suspicious about these claims. They may be more than suspicious…they may be specious.

I am from Missouri, and you are dead on point.

Nick Haynes (Diary) Saturday, April 18th at 2:46AM EST (link)

Pretty much anyone who has paid attention for longer than a year or two in Missouri knows that she’s a conservative in the mold of McCain more than Reagan. I’m not going to go any further than that, except to say two things:

1.) If you want more dirt, just contact me…I’m not going to spread it on a family-friendly website; and

2.) Based on how she conducted herself after she lost the primary last year for governor, Robin Carnahan will get my vote before Sarah Steelman ever does.

If you’re not networking, you’re not helping.

Suspicious

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 4:13AM EST (link)

It sounds to me like your criticism is more personal than policy-oriented.

Do you love big government Republicans like Roy Blunt and Hulshof?

Hulshof is a "big-government Republican"?

Nick Haynes (Diary) Saturday, April 18th at 10:33AM EST (link)

Hmmm, why don’t you ask the people of his district, rather than taking a few votes out of context. Tom Coburn voted for the initial TARP program–should I take that to mean that Coburn thinks it’s the government’s role to bail out Wall Street and is another fat cat Republican?

By the way, you call me out for making it personal, and then ask if I love big-government Republicans…classy. And yet you never once have addressed the substance of this diary. Much like Sarah, you can’t defend your own actions or make your own case, but instead have to attack the other side. Typical Steelman.

Since you want my explanation, here goes-yes, it’s personal, to a certain degree, and I’ll explain why. When the primary season started last year, I could have went for either Hulshof or Steelman. My personal choice was Hulshof, simply because I know him better and know the kind of person he is. Either would have been an acceptable choice. Then came the primary and her actions–calling Hulshof corrupt (while her own deputy treasurer was campaigning for her on government time), saying Hulshof took questionable donations on stem-cell research (from a business-interest arm of two supporters of stem-cell research, as opposed to taking it directly from them and in larger amounts like Sarah did), using her son’s 13th birthday as a press availability, running some of the nastiest ads in Missouri campaign history from a man in Missouri politics who is like Karl Rove, only without the ethical concerns Karl carries–and by the time the primary was done, I was ready to vote for the libertarian if Sarah had won. But, my promise to myself was to keep it confined to 2008. If Sarah ran in the future, play it by ear.

Then she lost–and showed her true colors. She refused to endorse Hulshof. She made statements making it seem like she thought Jay Nixon would be a better choice. And then she decided to use her official office to take care of personal vendettas. Enough–she’s dead to me. It’s not that she decided to take on an “establishment” Republican or whatever you want to call Hulshof. It’s that, much like her state Senate race and her treasurer race, it’s all about what’s best for Sarah, and whether Sarah gets her way. She doesn’t give a flying fig about getting a better government in there–if you get in her way, she has no room or no respect for you.

Not to mention that, should she be the nominee, her personal life is, how shall I say, less than in fine and upstanding order. Oh, sure, Blunt has his issues. But he makes it known. I suspect very few non-insider types in Missouri know of Sarah’s personal pecadilloes.

And there we go…not to think that this will sway you or anything. You’re throwing around classic Steelman campaign terms, which makes me think that you might already be on the payroll of the ethically-challenged campaign manager I mentioned above.

If you’re not networking, you’re not helping.

I was thinking precisely the same thing

You’re throwing around classic Steelman campaign terms, which makes me think that you might already be on the payroll of the ethically-challenged campaign manager I mentioned above.

Going to be pumping all the pro-growth Republicans

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 2:52PM EST (link)

I’m going to be pumping up all of the pro-growth Republicans running for office this year – particularly those endorsed by the Club for Growth.

So far, that includes Pat Toomey, Sen. Tom Coburn, Sen. Jim DeMint, and Rep. Kevin Calvey (R-OK).

I will not lift a finger for big government Republicans. It’s just not worth the effort when basically all they end up doing is undermining the economic message of the good Republicans like Tom Coburn, Jim DeMint, Jeff Flake, Mike Pence, Michele Bachmann, Paul Ryan, Marsha Blackburn, Doug Lamborn, Jeff Hensarling, Paul Broun, John Linder, Tom Price, et al.

Backup for "Big Government" claims

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 3:16PM EST (link)

Well, I’m glad that you consider the term “big government Republican” to be a dirty word. We can at least start with that as a point of agreement.

But if you look at Hulshof’s record, it is clearly one of a guy who does not mind government meddling in the economy.

His score from the Citizens Against Government Waste in 2007 was meager 48%. That means that every time CAGW scored a vote as being an opportunity to vote to cut government waste or at least not create any more waste, Hulshof decided that he wanted more government waste 52% of the time.

Was he as bad as most Democrats? No. But, again – not exactly a shining beacon of limited government fiscal conservatism, either. For comparison’s sake, Rep. Todd Akin from Missouri voted against government waste 95% of the time. So…it’s not like it can’t be done.

Now, looking at the broader pro-economic growth equation – beyond but also including spending – lets look at the Club for Growth ratings.

Hulshof scored an unimpressive 57% in 2007 – placing him in the bottom 30% of all Republican representatives. The previous year he scored even lower – 53% – but his colleagues were overall a little worse, so as a portion of the GOP caucus, he was only in the bottom 37%.

Again, for comparison’s sake, Rep. Todd Akin scored an 84% in 2006, placing him in the top 10% of the GOP caucus in terms of pro-growth votes and in 2006 and an even more impressive 91% in 2007, scoring him in the top 19% (more Republicans started getting the message about their economic votes that year.)

Tom Coburn’s ratings from all pro-growth groups is extremely high, and while TARP is certainly a blemish for the good doctor, he’s done so much else for the cause of limited government growth, expanding trade, and keeping taxes in check that it clearly has to be forgiven. Unfortunately, Reps. Blunt and Hulshof have no such track record that begs such forgiveness. Their track record is clearly one of big government Republicans, and anyone who supports them is clearly quite comfortable with big government Republicans.

As for your petty personal differences with Sarah Steelman that aren’t policy based, I really could care less. If Sarah decides that “what’s best for Sarah” is to aggressively promote a pro-growth economic agenda, well then I’ll be right there with her and donate to help her defeat any big government Republican.

If Jim Talent or Rep. Todd Akin were running for this senate seat, I’d be backing them.

I would reserve judgment

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 4:14AM EST (link)

Some of these guys kind of sound like Blunt/Hulshof hacks to me. Since they’re both big government Republicans, I would be very wary.

I’m certainly going to be staying tuned to see how the senate race unfolds.

huh?

Matt Blunt cut all sorts of things…or have you never seen the “Blunt Trauma” stickers on all the lefty’s econoboxes.

Care to explain any of your accusations? I’m willing to listen if you have something to say besides calling non-Steelman Missouri Republicans “big government Republicans.”

Roy Blunt, not Matt Blunt

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 5:11PM EST (link)

My general impression is that Matt Blunt is much, much better than his father’s demonstrably lackluster track record on economic issues.

Might Matt Blunt run for his father’s open house seat? If he does he would be a dramatic improvement over his father, and I would wholeheartedly support him.

I clearly have pointed out elsewhere that Jim Talent and U.S. Rep. Todd Akin are other great Republicans from Missouri. I would wholeheartedly support either for this senate seat or for governor. I don’t call someone a big government Republican if there isn’t, unfortunately, quite a convincing track record to point to.

Hulshof and Roy Blunt are the epitome of what is wrong with the Republican party and need to be replaced with committed limited government types if the GOP is to ever regain its credibility on fiscal issues.

Please direct me to Steelman's Big Labor ties

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 4:11AM EST (link)

I must say that I’ve been searching for quite a bit now, and I can’t find any accounts of Sarah Steelman being a supporter of Big Labor or being endorsed by Big Labor. In fact, this singular article is the only one that I can find. I’d be very interested in finding a source.

I’m not saying that this isn’t the case – after all I’ve only been following her since she took some excellent pro-growth stands in her quest for the governorship against another big government Republican (and lost, unfortunately.)

I understand that Sarah Steelman ruffled feathers by daring to oppose the establishment darling Hulshof in the gubernatorial race, and that has lots of big government establishmentarian Republicans really upset – and now they’re appalled that she might do it again by deignin to take on big government Republican Roy Blunt.

The problem is, Steelman isn't mentioned in the linked articles

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 2:42PM EST (link)

I mean, other than the author’s claim that Sarah Steelman was endorsed by the unions and appeared at an event at the time they were endorsing Carnahan against Ashcroft, I have yet to see any evidence of that. The article linked to on the front page diary that you linked to doesn’t even mention Sarah Steelman. I did a “find,” too, just in case I was missing it. Nothing came up. So that still leaves me with nothing but a diarists’ claims, and he’s already appears to be quite anti-Steelman or at least pro-Blunt.

It just seems like there would be some sort of news story or archived material. Perhaps the particular unions keep a database of who they have endorsed. I’ll see if their websites have anything.

Until then, that leaves me still with nothing but a few people’s unsubstantiated claims so far. I’m suspicious because she had an incredibly heated primary against Hulshof, and one would think that this type of claim would have sunk her with the GOP primary electorate and made his primary victory a little bit easier. And yet we’re just hearing about this now? Just seems very odd.

I mean…don’t you think?

I repeat

Bill S (Diary) Saturday, April 18th at 3:04PM EST (link)

I thought that I was pretty much only stating the obvious, but I’ll try to be more sensitive to that in the future.

But just so I’m sure that I’m not missing anything, there were two articles linked to in this diary you referenced by Brian Faughnan:

http://www.redstate.com/brianfaughnan/2009/04/17/sarah-steelman-shows-why-republicans-shouldnt-trust-labor-unions/

They were:

http://primebuzz.kcstar.com/?q=node/18109

and

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/campaigns/keyraces2000/stories/ashcroft102399.htm

Neither of those stories references Sarah Steelman as far as I can tell. If you find her name somewhere in there, can you please tell me which paragraph? Because I’ve read through it a couple times now and I don’t see it. That just leaves us with the diarist’s assertion. And, they may be good people, but as Reagan said – trust but verify.

Wait just a second...

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 4:49PM EST (link)

So the extent of Sarah Steelman’s “Big Labor ties” is that she supported the divestment of stock held in companies that do business with terror-sponsoring states like Iran?

You know, like noted “Big Labor supporter” Michael Barone kinda hailed Sarah Steelman for doing in his American Enterprise (not likely one of Hoffa’s favorite organizations) short publication here:

http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.26695/pub_detail.asp

Or is it possible that Steelman might have been actually, you know, doing something smart that pretty much can only be done at the state level to help hurt international terrorist-supporting states? Or do you think that the most likely explanation is really that she secretly favors the labor agenda?

I still can’t find any links to news articles tying her to Hoffa or Big Labor, and if it only takes 10 seconds, I hope that you can help me because I’ve been looking and haven’t been able to find any – and I’ve looked considerably longer than 10 seconds.

Thanks, Neil. I appreciate the help.

So that's it?

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 5:03PM EST (link)

Quoting from the same article by Michael Barone in his American Enterprise Institute short publication:

“In a time of great partisan strife, the divestment movement is deeply bipartisan. Bills have been passed in the heavily Democratic legislature in California and the heavily Republican legislature in Florida. Sponsors include supporters of the war in Iraq–including Ohio legislator Josh Mandel, now on his second deployment there as a Marine reservist–and strong opponents. We may not be at war with the mullah regime, but they have been waging war against us for a long time, since the hostage seizure in 1979 and the bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Lebanon in 1983.

“You sometimes hear the criticism that ordinary Americans have not been asked to make any sacrifices or take any action in our war against terrorists. But as Treasurer Steelman, dozens of state legislators and the Teamsters’ Hoffa have shown, there is something we can do. Stopping the flow of investment funds into companies that, opportunistically, do business with the No. 1 terrorist-supporting regime in the world doesn’t guarantee success. But it’s a step in the right direction.”

This is hardly troubling news about Sarah Steelman. Whatever Hoffa’s motives were, I think that it’s pretty clear that Sarah Steelman was doing her part to hurt – or at least not help – terrorist-sponsoring states like Iran.

Do you disagree, Neil?

What are you talking about?

Neil Stevens (Diary) Saturday, April 18th at 5:07PM EST (link)

I thought you were asking for proof that Steelman and Hoffa were buddy-buddy.

I found the proof that you were so obnoxiously claiming didn’t exist.

So instead of saying “Sorry Bill and Brian, I was wrong to accuse you of willfully misrepresenting Steelman. You were right. Let’s move on,” Now you’re changing the subject and attacking some more, pretending you never made an accusation of two of our contributors?

Absolutely, dispicably appalling

EzOnTheEyez Saturday, April 18th at 5:21PM EST (link)

So every Republican who is for divesting state assets from companies that do business in Iran is “buddy buddy with Jimmy Hoffa?”

Michael Barone’s article in American Enterprise makes no claim nor does it insinuate that that Steelman and Hoffa are “buddy buddy” or even collaborated on this legislation. They just happened to have the same position – as did large swaths of elected representatives in heavily Republican and heavily Democratic states across the country.

If this is really it, then the people making these claims about Sarah Steelman are even more irresponsible than I originally thought.

Did you actually READ this article, Niel? Or did you just see that Sarah Steelman and Jimmy Hoffa were listed in the same article and both were in favor of divesting of assets of companies that do business in terrorist-sponsoring states?

I’m just aghast. If anyone is due an apology, so far it looks to be Sarah Steelman for some people apparently intentionally trying to misrepresent her attempt to not help out terrorist-sympathizers as evidence that she’s ever been in favor of Big Labor’s agenda.

This is really, really appalling.

I question the utility of re-reading War and Peace.

But given my respect for EOTE, I probably will anyway w/i the next 24 hours and weigh in even if a year from now I am dubbed a mere “Period”.

ps of course, given my aversion to the whole blamming culture, absent profanity, it is highly unlikely that I would favor the blamming

I just realized

….that you linked to THIS article in your post above. Perhaps you were referring to another post. I checked the articles tagged “Sarah Steelman” and nothing came up. Can you please link to the post by “Kevin?”

Thanks.

I'll admit to being at least partially with EZ on this one.

I’m not at all sold on Steeleman, and Blunt’s probably just a mole (as I’ve discussed elsewhere) but if I read ‘union ties’ I expect serious ties. Like the ties that bind. Ties like the democrats have.

If the ties are less clear cut, I want them specifically listed. e.g. no voting record, but ‘name a specific press article’ said that the ‘blank union’ was supporting Steeleman. That sort of thing.

I realize she hasn’t been a representative yet, so we can’t go off of voting record, but I’m not willing to accept fragile ties as condemning actions.
