Card Check Loses Another Senator

Bennet (D-CO) Says Card Check Endangers Obamacare

Colorado’s Michael Bennet – who faces the voters for the first time next year – had a rough meeting with ‘progressives’ in Colorado. It sounds as if he thinks that his re-election chances suffer if he supports the Obama agenda. In particular, he doesn’t like Card Check:

Bennet has been one of the few Senate Democrats who have declined to take a stand on the Employee Free Choice Act, a bill favored by organized labor that would make it easier to unionize worksites.

Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., announced Monday that she would oppose the bill, making it all but certain that the bill in its current form can’t muster the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster by opponents.

“We’re going to have to see whether or not there’s a consensus that can be reached that makes it something that can be passed because right now there isn’t something that can be passed,” Bennet told the group at New Belgium.

He won’t earn himself any fans on the Left either, if he continues to link Card Check to Obamacare:

He said he’s concerned by the hard feelings that are developing on the issue, among organized labor on one side and small-business owners on the other. He said those groups can be allies on many issues, particularly health-care reform, and can’t let the EFCA debate splinter relationships.

“Temperatures are running high on both sides of this. We need to make sure that no matter how this turns out … that we’ve got all hands on deck working on health-care reform because this is the year to get that done,” he said.

Is Bennet looking to bail on health care, or is he looking to blackmail Harry Reid to kill Card Check? His message seems to be that if Card Check advances, health care reform takes a serious hit. If other Democrats begin to frame Card Check and Obamacare as some sort of either/or proposition, Big Labor will find a spot reserved under the bus.

Don't believe a word of it!

They’ll let some of these “new” Democrats that ran as faux Republicans will come out and voice their objections to the bill, get a lot of ink, posture a bunch, then sign on and vote for a “compromise” that still has 90% of the bad stuff in it. The 10% they throw away was meant to be thrown away anyway. And when we get the “compromise,” a whole bunch of Republicans will sing a paen to bipartisanship and vote for the compromise. I just hate the gift of being able to see into the future.

After they take out the 10%, they’ll add another 20%-30% in conference that will make the bill even worse than the original. And by that point, with Franken seated, the Democrats will just recruit Arlen and drag in Ted to get their 60 votes (if they need another 60 votes).

The greatest evil…is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern. -C.S. Lewis

I doubt the Dems

BlueLandRed (Diary) Tuesday, April 7th at 5:18PM EST (link)

are all that willing to compromise.

I suspect that they simply opt to go the reconciliation route. Doing so would require them to stretch the Senate rules beyond all recognition, but I don’t think that will bother them one bit.

I Think You're Both Wrong

Democrats are fundamentally cowards.

They won’t bring up Card Check unless they know exactly how it’s going to go down. They won’t go reconciliation (that’s the one thing that could get even Specter types to grab the torches and pitchforks), and they won’t bring it up for a regular vote until they know they have 61 or 62 in favor.

No matter how hard they try, my suspicion is that they’ll never get the Lincolns and the Landrieus and the Bennets to vote for Card Check unless they already have 61 or 62 other votes in favor of it.

When push comes to shove, legislative Democrats really never seem to be able to truly pull the trigger and really “remake” America.

‘Cos they’re yella…

you are right on this issue - nt

that Big Labor gets the shaft in this one. Hey thanks for the vote but we’re gonna work on the census and count illegals now, its our new demographic. Good luck with your guns and religion.

That said and totally off point – I never liked that Repubs were given the Red color, but I can live with my high school colors, HOWEVER, I hereby move for a movement (heh) that Dems official color be YELLA!

for Harry Reid as Majority Leader. We need Republicans in the Senate not a mix of blue and yellow dog Democrats voting for what in my humble opinion is the worse majority leader in the history of the Republic.

It seems the people and thier leaders arn’t seeing eye to eye.

They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.
If they need more voters,
then they have to make more of who they are for.

Don't trust Lincoln

DerKrieger (Diary) Tuesday, April 7th at 10:42PM EST (link)

Being both an AR resident and a Wal-Mart employee at the home office in Bentonville I can attest to the fact that we worked hard on our Senators on this issue. But I still don’t trust Lincoln. I suspect that she will only oppose card check until after she wins reelection. And since the AR GOP is completely dysfunctional I’m sure Blanche will run unopposed or only get token opposition.

Lincoln will be at a health care state tour in Springdale next week and I’m going to try to make it. If I do I’ll submit a diary. I have some questions for her. Heh heh heh.

Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience.” — John Locke, 1690
