Why is it that the U.S. press seems unable to follow up on statements that President Obama makes to hispanic audiences (a term I use here in its broadest possible sense). As I pointed out yesterday, the press took no notice when Mexican President Felipe Calderon said that Obama had promised to pursue comprehensive immigration reform.
Now the press takes no notice when Obama appears on Spanish-language radio here in the United States, and makes the same promise:
This is the Spanish-language translation of Obama’s original comments in English. I cannot find a transcript of those comments, so my English-Spanish-English translation will likely vary from Obama’s statement. However, this is an approximation:
‘We need to start working on it now. It’s going to take time to move (the proposal) forward, but I’m very committed that this become concrete.’ declared the leader during an interview…
Obama added that the administration will include in the legislative process all those involved in aspects of migration reform, so that they ‘can think how we’re going to confront this problem.’
The report also indicates that Obama promised to begin the process ‘in the coming months’ – a nice, vague term. A similar report – using much the same language – warranted headlines in the Mexico City press, where immigration reform is followed very closely.
Can the English-language press corps ask Obama exactly what commitments he is making to hispanic audiences with regard to immigration reform? Or better yet: perhaps Obama could deliver some of the transparency he’s so famous for, and tell the same thing to two different audiences.

There has always been some number of illegals in this country. The problems arose when we reached critical mass some years ago and still they keep coming.
Legalizing them won’t change a thing. Most could care less about being legal especially if it means they then have to compete with the rest of us for the jobs in which they are right now undercutting American workers’ wages. As illegals in this country they get the best of both worlds: sympathy which garners heaps of free services and jobs with none of the tax-paying responsibility.
I suppose, considering it no longer affects my husband I could shut up about it now but I keep thinking about all those others in the construction field who won’t have the opportunity to do what hubby is doing and change careers.

Swamp_Yankee (Diary) Saturday, February 21st at 4:03PM EST (link)These coalitions are not as simple as D v. R. Also, hate Obama all you want, he’s not dumb. He’s got a fairly poltically saavy team.
A bunch of Dems of Hardball and Poltico pretty much conceded that health care reform is too expensive and fiscally irresponsible right now and that he’ll probably wait till another session.
Global warming regualtions would send more shockwaves through the market. FOCA is too divisive. It is a heavy handed smack down of states rights and repeals a plethora of moderate state laws in places like North Dakota and Arkansas where Lincoln and Dorgan have re-elections in 2010. He wants 60+ for 2010 and needs a somewhat moderate image.
Obama would benefit greatly from a bi-partisan win and he knows it. If he can keep his Dems in line, he can peel of enough Reps to gain, what would appear, a true bi-partisan effort.
Two cross currents running now on the Democratic side
civil truth (Diary) Saturday, February 21st at 4:18PM EST (link)On the one hand, there are the 1960′s radicals who are just salivating at the chance to bring on the Revolution now – who want to push for the whole ball of wax now in a “Shock and Awe” onslaught, like they did with the Stimulus bill.
The other group are those who see the dangers of overreach and who are willing to be more strategic and long-term in their thinking, who see 2010 as a chance to increase their majority (including 60+ in the Senate) and in 2012 to gain a 2/3rds majority in the House and Senate (along with majorities in 3/4ths of the states, with help from redistricting).
This second group will soften up the Republicans with more “bipartisan” measures (under the new definition of bipartisan = 1 or more Republicans in each house) until they have assembled their juggenaut.
It’s still a toss up as to who will prevail, but given the large number of Clintonistas being given positions, I suspect the second will prevail – since Barry doesn’t like to risk defeat,

Obama's making parody of Sarah Palin
civil truth (Diary) Saturday, February 21st at 6:36PM EST (link)One of your basic critiques of Gov. Palin is that she brought in a few of her buddies with her, kicked out the competent Republicans, and left in place the Democratic apparatniks, who periodically are able to throw sand in the gears.
Well it’s not a complete parallel, but fairly close, I suspect. Obama comes in with his radical program, having successfully disseminated during the campaign and having an economic crisis to exploit. He’s got his Chicago gang with him, but both he and they have no roots in the Washington bureaucracy – and he was a Senate newbie, and thus doesn’t have many chits to draw from them.
His first major victory (the Stimulus Bill) came about from turning the writing over to Congress. He seems to be relying on a lot of Clintonistas to operate the bureaucracy – and if they behave similarly, they may put sand in the wheels and slow down Obama’s attempt at Shock and Awe.
I don’t think Obama expected such a strong pushback from the Republicans and the amount of public opposition he’s evoked. He knows that his honeymon will depend on his winning – a defeat or two and Congress will hold the whip hand.
So I still think that there’s dissension in the administration and that it’s too early to know which group will prevail.

Actually, I'm "rooting for injuries" between the two teams
civil truth (Diary) Saturday, February 21st at 8:04PM EST (link)In term of cooking, the country is more likely to survive the Clinton recipes than those from Obama’s gang. But not very healthily.
Two points give me particular disquiet:
1) We’ve never seen Clintonistas in action when the Democrats hold strong congressional majorities. During Bill’s time, they had to triangulate. What they would look like with a Republican opposition is an unknown factor – especially their sympathies with totatlitarian tactics of maintaining power.
2) There is the hope that an unleashed Obama agenda might evoke enough resistance to the program that a more gradual subversion wouldn’t (the boiling frog analogy). But that would have to happen in 2010.
However, I think the people behind Obama are ruthless enough to crush revanchists if they get enough tools in place (especially card check and RTW repeal, as you beat the drum on correctly). So I’m not eager for a strategy of hoping your opposition makes a mistake – that is very high risk in a situation where defeat will mark the end of our republic. Which is why I said I was rooting for injuries, not mistakes from Obama’s team.
I remember back in the primary season that a fair number of RedStaters were hoping that Obama would defeat Clinton because they saw Obama as a weaker candidate.
I disagreed because I felt they seriously underestimated the non-rational appeal that Obama would have, the symbolism and his rhetorical ability when scripted, the cult of personality that he would evoke. Which is exactly the way things played out. For most of our public, emotion trumps reason.
Also, I preferred Clinton because, while she would be a very difficult candidate to defeat, we probably could survive her election because the political system would remain intact.
Whereas with Obama, I was concerned that either because of foreign policiy misteps or the totalitarian spirit that suffused his campaign, his election could pose a mortal threat to our republic. And that is still the case.
However, we’re still in a defensible position -as I still don’t believe that the American public has bought into communism. Unfortunately, conservatives remain not well-focused. We need to know what are the redoubts we defend to the death, and be careful we don’t overreact to every trial baloon. Obama’s crew are firing MIRVs, but not all warheads are created equal.
My first reaction is that the defend-to-the-death issues are those involving campaign money, unions, and communications – because those are the lifeblood of a viable political party and campaigning.

You are entitled to your uninformed opinion about what “thinking adults” should or should not be thing. Opinions are like anuses, everybody has one. And frankly, I have no desire to be exposed to, in your particular case, either.
1. The overwhelming majority of posters here – me included – support immigration reform. That would include a hard look at the types of immigrants who will bring the most benefit to this country.
2. Unskilled laborers do not fit the description above.
3. We – those opposed to CIR – aren’t afraid of Spanish, Catholicism or folks with a “good work ethic” either. Although, I strongly suspect that your definition and mine on at least the last two are vastly different.
4. We celebrate new immigrants who enter this country legally and seek to become Americans. We generally have no use for people who violate our immigration laws to get here and then turn large parts of our major cities into something that looks like the barrios they came from.
Since your self-confessed atheism apparently makes you grammatically ignorant, the “C” in Catholicism is capitalized when making a reference to the particular religious denomination. Also, when referring to “work ethic” we try to hold congratulations to people who, in fact, work and obey the law. That doesn’t include stealing a social security number to get a job – which, BTW, happens to be a felony.
I sincerely hope – really I do – that somebody steals your social security number and trashes your identity so they can enjoy freedom illegally here at your expense.

Yes. It is neither mine nor the government’s business to determine what a free adult puts into his own body.
“If a person gets caught being in America illegally should he get to stay in America?”
Why is it illegal for him to be here? If he or she is a convicted felon in either their own country or ours, send them back. Has he merely broken the law by exchanging labor for money with another? I don’t see why that is illegal. Let them stay. Underbidding another on a contract does not constitute a crime.

Native born American’s milk language actually runs the gamut. I’m quite content with government documents, including ballots being in American English only. You open up a bag of worms with exceptions (Inuit? Hawaiian? Navajo?)
“You are entitled to your uninformed opinion about what “thinking adults” should or should not be thing. Opinions are like anuses, everybody has one. And frankly, I have no desire to be exposed to, in your particular case, either”.
Witty. I’ve never heard that one before.
“1. The overwhelming majority of posters here – me included – support immigration reform. That would include a hard look at the types of immigrants who will bring the most benefit to this country.”
It’s difficult to tell with comments like
“I just hope enough of us can flood our represenatives with calls and faxes to stop this.
We do not need immigration reform. We need to enforce current law!!!!! NO AMNESTY!!!!”
and
“better learn to habla espagnol senor
para verdad”
with absolutely no details on what the Obama administration reform may or may not look like.
“2. Unskilled laborers do not fit the description above.”
I like having produce harvested, cement poured and hotel rooms cleaned. These occupations are not glamorous, but the tasks must be performed. People who do so contribute to the economy and America. Some “skilled” folks (attorneys, athletes not so much).
“3. We – those opposed to CIR – aren’t afraid of Spanish, Catholicism or folks with a “good work ethic” either. Although, I strongly suspect that your definition and mine on at least the last two are vastly different.”
So you support” immigration reform” (see point #1) but not “comprehensive immigration reform”. Haphazard immigration reform? Partial? What?
“4. We celebrate new immigrants who enter this country legally and seek to become Americans. We generally have no use for people who violate our immigration laws to get here and then turn large parts of our major cities into something that looks like the barrios they came from.”
Nope. No xenophobia here. Move along folks. As our immigration laws stand today they are unable to enter legally and yet our economy demands them. Comprehensive reform would hopefully repair that disconnect.
“Since your self-confessed atheism apparently makes you grammatically ignorant, the “C” in Catholicism is capitalized when making a reference to the particular religious denomination.”
I am an atheist, good guess. The lower case c is called a typo. Put a red check on it and omit the gold star.
“ Also, when referring to “work ethic” we try to hold congratulations to people who, in fact, work and obey the law. That doesn’t include stealing a social security number to get a job – which, BTW, happens to be a felony.
I sincerely hope – really I do – that somebody steals your social security number and trashes your identity so they can enjoy freedom illegally here at your expense.”
That oh so Christian sentiment is noted. I wish no such misfortune upon you. I merely hope you lose out on a contract to an immigrant. Preferably an amnesty recipient.
“Oh, and in checking your posting history Moby, you’re now two for two. I’m willing to wake up HappyBunny if I have to, even though it means putting up with a grouchy rabbit half the night.”
Whatever that means. Am I supposed to be impressed?
“Instead of insulting those who disagree with your version of “immigration reform”, why not try to inform the uninformed and change our minds?”
Oh, I forget, that would require a cogent argument that includes facts and a reasoned approach. The lefties find it so much easier to just shout, RACIST!
Watch out for the bunny!”
See above.
Please continue agreeing with each other now.

Steph C (Diary) Sunday, February 22nd at 7:26AM EST (link)Does this also include dietary preferences? Or do you support all the legislation barring “fat” people from buying food at certain restaurants?
Or the legislation against cigarette smokers but indiscrimnate sex is okay?
Or telling a doctor what he can or cannot do for a patient depending on whether it’s cost effective?
Or regulating carbon dioxide which is not a pollutant but is erroneously being called one?
Card check is basically a way to insure that companies become unionized whether they want it or not. Are you for that, too?
Yall like to call everything morally relative so how do you say something like the above without saying the same about everything else?

CIR would only make things worse
publiussteve Saturday, February 21st at 11:04PM EST (link)Actually, any sane, thinking, rational person opposes CIR amnesty. We tried “comprehensive immigration reform” with the 1986 IRCA amnesty, which failed and led to more illegal immigration. Now, the open border elites are trying to sell the same baloney again. NO WAY. The way to improve the status quo is to finally enforce existing immigration laws which would cause the majority of illegals to self-deport over time.
And the Bush/Kennedy amnesty bill would have been disastrous. Just a few factoids about that monstrosity:
1) The Heritage Foundation estimated that this would have cost $2.6 TRILLION.
2) It did not require illegals to pay any back taxes for work performed illegally
3) meaningless background checks (within 24 hours)
4) gang members eligible for amnesty
5) it would have granted amnesty to an unlimited number of illegal aliens, as there was no cap.
I could go on, but the point is the country does not need, and Americans do not want CIR amnesty, and to oppose this does not make one “xenophobic.” This is a tired attack line that the open border crowd uses to try to stifle honest debate.
5 x 5. and there's a big security impact with amnesty
David123 (Diary) Saturday, February 21st at 11:39PM EST (link)Remember?
The Washington DC snipers – one was an illegal alien
The 9/11 murderers – several were illegal aliens
The recent [not Bill Ayers] Fort Dix plotters/terrorists – several were illegal aliens
Moussauoi [wants to fly planes without landing them] held as an illegal alien after he was discovered.
After 9/11 many suspicious illegal aliens were rounded up, held, and deported.
Being able to round up and hold illegal aliens has surely stopped some terrorist plots. If illegal aliens get amnesty and “rights” it will be much harder to stop terrorist plots. If you can’t hold an illegal alien for being an illegal alien and you can’t PROVE that he intends tocommit terrorism so you have to let him go – look out.
