Freshman Democrat Walt Minnick (D-ID) is one of the Blue Dogs who opposed passage of the Obama-Reid-Pelosi spending plan. He has now introduced his own stimulus legislation. And how does it differ from the legislation being debated in Congress now?
“The biggest difference is that I’ve cut out everything that doesn’t create jobs in this year and next,” Minnick said Thursday. “It’s only $174 billion, $650 billion less than what the House passed and probably $750 billion less than the trillion dollar bill the Senate is talking about. It focuses on infrastructure spending, there’s $70 billion on bridges, roads and school construction and there’s $100 billion on tax cuts to middle and low income people.
Minnick said his proposal would spend all the money by the end of 2010, while the White House proposal would only spend 30 percent of the larger amount they’re proposing.
Minnick is right. The bill is tremendously wasteful, and it will hurt the economy rather than help it. Will Minnick’s fellow Democrats listen?

of course they won't listen
JLenardDetroit (Diary) Friday, February 6th at 4:21PM EST (link)because they’ve all bought into the non-sense that Liberal spending at the onset of the Great Depression just wasn’t enough spending in order to help…. which has allowed this bidding up war… Complete MORONS willing to accept any excuse/reason for Liberal Donaters Payback program that this Stimulus really is….

Wow, an interesting alternative
DrOldSchool Friday, February 6th at 4:30PM EST (link)Good for him for bucking the liberal trend in his party. I’d love to see the guts of the bill, but I’m willing to wager this bill could get support from the Republicans, and other blue dogs. Has anyone in the GOP presented a comprehensive alternative along these lines, and not the little changes that Specter, Snowe et al. are negotiating?
Any chance of getting him to flip?
Brian Hibbert (Diary) Friday, February 6th at 4:34PM EST (link)At least on fiscal issues, this guy is in the wrong party.

Socialism doesn’t work. It looks nice on paper, but it’s been tried and it’s failed miserably every time (usually accompanied by widespread death and suffering).

If the Republicans are smart...
owise1 Friday, February 6th at 4:48PM EST (link)…they’ll jump on this like a duck on a junebug. I’d be interested to find out what he means by tax cuts for low income people since they already don’t pay taxes that can be cut. Sounds like Obama’s wealth redistribution plan. But that’s what we’re going to get anyway, and at least this plan limits the bleeding to something less than $100 billion. Furthermore, at least some of that tax cut will ostensibly go to the middle class. Then the remaining $74 billion on infrastructure. I’m still not on board with that either, but I think we can survive as a nation with it, whereas I have my doubts about the $1 trillion porkoremus.
So, all the Republicans should jump on this thing before Nancy’s jackbooted thugs take Congressman Minnick into the cloak room for some waterboarding. They can tout the fact that they are bipartisan and ready to work with reasonable Democrats on their plans. They can still say they think their own plan is much better, but in the interest of bipartisanship, and for the good of the country, they’re ready to compromise on and meet the Democrats halfway by supporting this particular bill. If there is one Blue Dog coming out in the open, you can bet that there are several others watching from the shadows to see if it’s safe to come out against Nancy. I say, let’s give them a good reason to come out of the closet.
Why thank you for your honesty Rep. Minnick. But ...
Martin Knight (Diary) Friday, February 6th at 5:04PM EST (link)… I’ll still be wanting that seat back in two years. Add a foot and a tail under that ‘D’ you’re wearing behind you name and we may come to some sort of “arrangement.”
In the mean time, more of this please.
PS: That there is a Democrat in Congress representing Idaho when there’s not a single Republican in the House from the whole of New England just shows how far we’ve fallen.

bsquared Monday, February 9th at 10:35AM EST (link)Couldn’t agree with Brian more: “At least on fiscal issues, this guy is in the wrong party”–and we’d love to see him flip, so long term let’s work on that. Clearly we’ve lots of work to do long-term (Martin), but in the meantime, (owise) “let’s give them a good reason to come out of the closet” and, (Martin) “more of this please” –should be a huge RS mission today.
Irony that it’s a freshman…LOVE to hear Minnick’s name on Rush today…if nothing else, the guy has stones and hopefully won’t crack under the waterboarding. Gotta believe he’s a good listener to the desires of this great state–good he’s surrounded by red anyway. Let’s stick a pitch-fork in the bluedog closet and yank a few more out! Nancy & Co., if a freshman can figure it out, how ’bout you pull your head out?! (goes for Bawnee Fwank too)
