Obama Gets His $3,500 Blackberry

But His Team Pays Homage to Karl Rove

Ambinder points out that Barack Obama will get his fancy-shmancy Blackberry:

President Barack Obama is going to get his blackberry.

On Monday, a government agency that the Obama administration — but that is probably the National Security Agency — added to a standard blackberry a super-encryption package…. and Obama WILL be able to use it … still for routine and personal messages.

It’s not clear whether he yet has the device.

With few exceptions, government Blackberries aren’t designed for encryption that protects messages above the “SECRET” status, so it’s not clear whether Obama is getting something new and special. The exception: the Sectera Edge from General Dynamics, which allows for TOP SECRET voice conversations…

The messages, like other White House communications, will kept from the public for the duration of his presidency, if not longer.

We probably ought to correct Ambinder’s last paragraph; this is what he meant:

The messages, like other White House communications, will kept from the public for the duration of his presidency, if not longer, unless lawsuits are filed seeking their disclosure.

Better.

That said, it’s interesting that George Bush — the addictive personality, the hothead, the one who held grudges, the one who couldn’t separate the personal from the political — he said goodbye to E-mail before the start of his presidency. If you read it, it sounds almost… disciplined. And it might be a better approach then blowing nearly $3,500 on a cell phone:

The price is $3,350 with a two-year warranty, a princely sum that’s reflected in the Pentagon-worthy price tags for accessories: a simple adapter for a lighter plug costs $100. (Never again should you complain about how much your civilian analogue costs.)

Ambinder mentions that Obama’s team also looked into having the DNC buy Blackberries for senior staff, strictly for political use. They dropped that idea, presumably deciding that the ink was too fresh on their outraged screeds about Karl Rove doing precisely that.

At least the Democrats have some shame.

If a $3500 device is going to make him a more effective president then i think it’s a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

They just figure that because the issue would be to ‘hot’, they’ll wait till things cool down, THEN they’ll get their “political only” devices.
Kind of like a thief who waits until the heat is off before trying to fence stolen property.

I wonder: just who will get access to Him this way? And why?

Usually the Chief of Staff is the ‘gatekeeper’ specifically to keep unregulated information (read: people) away from POTUS. Now there will be away around all that? Never mind the public… think about that Jr staffer that just knows he/she has the ‘worlds best idea’ but can’t get his/her bosses boss to take it to BHO

If true… that will be interesting. Interesting indeed…

This is exactly the reason I’ve been making an issue of the Blackberry. It has NOTHING to do with the cost or device itself but one of INTEGRITY… honesty and openness… and all those things!

How else is Scarlet going to text him orders from the SAG. How else is Bill Ayers going to secretly control the direction of Indoctrination (er… sorry… Education) in America… etc….

Obama already

BlueLandRed (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 3:54PM EST (link)

has a “phone” and no one gets to direct dial him, save maybe Michele. All calls are going to go through the White House Secretary’s Office and then through his regular communications gear.

I think this is more for email and all of those will probably go through the White House server and probably be “screened” by his secretary before being forwarded (encrypted) out to his “Blackberry”.

And I have to say, I really don’t see what the big deal is here, the price of the First Blackberry is nothing compared to Air Force One, Marine One, Cadillac One, Camp David, etc. etc. If it helps Obama escape some part of the White House bubble, it can’t be a bad thing. I mean, maybe Bush should have tried harder to avoid being handle so much by his handlers.

The libs did a masterful job for eight years of poking President Bush in the eye for EVERYTHING. Even, mostly(?), things that didn’t actually happen!
Not a matter of revenge, or get even.
Much more a matter of accepting that there are a heck of a lot of not African Americans who voted for Mr Obama partly because they had been “educated” for eight years about how evil and dirty Bush and Republicans in general are.
Failing to learn from the butt kickin’ lessons of the last two elections, only means another butt whoopin’ in 2010.

I have no problem with this

Neil Stevens (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 2:58PM EST (link)

I find Ambinder’s title inaccurate. He’s *keeping* his blackberry for personal and campaign use.

But he’s using an NSA-outfitted custom device for government work. Throwing a fit over the price I think is misplaced anger. For crying out loud, do we want Obama’s Presidential messages to go over RIM-controleld servers, or do we want NSA to dictate everything they need to keep it safe from spying, or worse, active interference in the message stream? Protecting the President’s communications from what, say, Russia can do requires more than just a $500 phone, which is what the good Blackberries cost when you don’t get them subsidized by a phone company.

Besides, I’ve always thought it was stupid when Presidents refused to use emails. They put their own comfort over the country when they refused to get more efficient in the name of dodging subpoenas.

It’s time we made improving communications *normal*.

Of course, I doubt Obama would do this if Republicans were in charge of the Senate…

That paper-trail can make you much less effective in the long run, when all your 5 second blackberry emails are getting dragged out in front of a Congressional witch hunt. Overall I think it is a dumb move given the kind of environment a President operates in today. Allowing him to keep his civilian blackberry (for whatever purpose) would be even more stupid.

So let's change the environment

Neil Stevens (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 3:22PM EST (link)

You really can’t disallow the President to use his own phone for his own campaign and personal work, given that a) he’s the President and b) it’d be illegal for him to use the government phone for campaign stuff.

But yes, let’s change the environment. Somebody has to stand up to the bullies sometime. Somewhere. All it takes for the Waxmans of the world to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

My rules of the road for primary season.
Rule #1: Vote for YOUR first choice in the primaries
Rule #2: Vote for the R in the general.
Rule #3: Don’t let anyone convince you to violate Rule #1 or Rule #2
Rule #4: When in a center-right argument, reaffirm Rules #1-#3–it will help us all to get along better.
Rule #5: If you are using the language of the left, you probably aren’t furthering conservativism
Rule #6: The priority is issues first, candidates second, and supporters third. Nobody is bigger than the issues. Conversely, if you spend your time focusing on supporters, you are wasting everyone’s time.

the solution there isn’t to eliminate Presidential emails, but instead to reduce the amount of witchhunting going on. Oversight yes, witchhunting, not so much.

That said, I think most government sent email should be made available to the public… I mean we are, after all their bosses, so why can’t we see their email… understanding that the President isn’t your typical governmental employee.

for anything but the most routine personal communication, e.g., the grocery list or a dentist appointment, is out of their mind. At minimum the rule is don’t put anything in an email that you don’t want on the front page of the paper that hates you most. Since the media all love BHO, they’ll let him get away with it, but somebody will go looking for his email and eventually get it.

Perhaps that

BlueLandRed (Diary) Wednesday, January 21st at 4:06PM EST (link)

is one of our problems… is that we have government employees who think that what they say in an email should not be on the front page of the newspaper. I’m finding it hard to believe (that will certain exceptions like national security and privacy) that all government emails should be made available to the public sometime shortly after they are sent. And government workers who have problems with that should go work for corporations that don’t read their employees email… if they can find any.

Under most state laws all emails are public.

Hmmmm, A Blackberry With A Super Encryption Package

Bourbeau Wednesday, January 21st at 5:15PM EST (link)

Really? Now that they’ve made that public, I wonder how soon before a band of hackers unencrypt it. Not going to happen? I give it six months. The only question will be severity of the breach, and of course, the explanation that President Obama gives out.

Public Official Blackberries

JChesney (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 12:45AM EST (link)

Does no one remember what happened to Sarah Palin during the campaign? Hey, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If Obama wants to risk keeping his must-have electronic toy, so be it. Just don’t complain when a hacker hits him on it. And, he better not DARE complain –he never defended Palin on what happened to her.

I can’t believe he would want to keep his Blackberry. I am addicted to mine, and quite frankly it wears me out.

Gov. Palin isn't done with Blackberry problems.

Achance (Diary) Thursday, January 22nd at 1:34PM EST (link)

Alaska has a very expansive public records act which makes almost anything a public officer or employee records in any form a public record; the exceptions are few and very explicit. When there has been controversy, the courts have always come down on the side of disclosure.

Either somebody didn’t tell Gov. Palin this or she didn’t listen and she and her staff as well as Todd Palin were constantly on the Blackberries. When the whole Monegan/Tpr. Wooten thing came down, there were all sorts of requests for her records and communications. There was an avalanche of requests after her nomination for VP. Her Commissioner of Administration tried to give her some cover by getting an AGs Opinion embracing the notion that there is some “private” use of State emails etc., a notion that has always been explicitly rejected. When we set up the policies for use of email, cell phones, lat tops etc. in the ’90s we made a virtue of necessity and countenanced de minimis personal use but the price of getting the grocery list or flirting on email was the knowledge that your grocery list and flirtatious conversation would be public record if anyone asked for it.

Anyway, Gov.Palin continues to assert that a large number of email by and between her, her staff, and Todd Palin are not subject to disclosure since they are private or are covered by executive privilege. I thought she would just use this to hold on to them until after the election and then give up and let them go, but so far she is holding out. It is before the Superior Court in Anchorage now and there is NO WAY she is going to be able to keep whatever that stuff is private.
