Harry Reid Plays it Smart

He Won't Make a Martyr of Lieberman -- At Least Not Yet

Harry Reid has met with Senator Joe Lieberman to discuss Lieberman’s place in the Democratic conference. And instead of stripping him of his committee chairmanship, the two are expected to talk again:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) declined to strip Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) of his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairmanship Thursday afternoon, but after the two met behind closed doors, Lieberman’s future remained uncertain.

“Today Senator Lieberman and I had the first of what I expect to be several conversations,” Reid said in a statement released by his office. “No decisions have been made. While I understand that Senator Lieberman has voted with Democrats a majority of the time, his comments and actions have raised serious concerns among many in our caucus. I expect there to be additional discussions in the days to come, and Senator Lieberman and I will speak to our caucus in two weeks to discuss further steps.”

Lieberman, whose status with Democrats has been shaky since he endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) for president, indicated that Reid presented him with several options to consider and that he would mull them over.

“I want to spend some time in the next few days thinking about what Sen. Reid and I discussed and what my options are at this point, and he promised me that he will do the same. And we will continue these conversations,” Lieberman said in a brief appearance in the Senate TV gallery. He declined to answer questions about what options Reid had presented him with.

This is the smart move by Reid. While the netroots are screaming for Lieberman’s head, it makes sense for Reid to try to hold onto as large as majority as he can. After all, it was only a few days ago that Reid was hoping to manage the Senate with 60 Democratic votes; now he seems more likely to be stuck at 57. Reid has no desire to shrink that to 56, before Barack Obama decides whether to tap Senators for his administration.

Further, it would be a very bad PR move to dump Lieberman merely for following his conscience. It make far more sense to at least appear to be trying in good faith to heal the rift, so Lieberman takes the blame for leaving the Democrats, if that is ultimately what happens. Bet on this though: Lieberman will have to make some promises on voting to break filibusters as a condition of holding his seat. That’s his most valuable asset to Reid.

It was a smart move on his part to try and pander Joe’s Vote again instead of threatening him with the strip. Maybe he will just give them lip service and support the Repubs anyway.

Curious

I am curious what the people here think of Lieberman. Would he be welcomed into the Republican Party if that were his choice?

Token Liberal.

He's fine where he is.

Nice to have one Democrat in the Senate who’s willing to stand up to the people who think of Iraqis as mobile cardboard cutouts.

Nope, the libs can have him full bore

I’m sure I heard an audio clip on the top of the hour radio news today of him saying he fully supports B. Hussein Obama as president.

Reid doesn't need Joe.

There are probably half a dozen Republicans who will be more than happy to “work with Harry” on crucial issues. And our leadership in the Senate will let them get away with it.

I think he'd

be more than welcome if his switch would tip the balance to the GOP, ala Jim Jeffords.

But as you know…

If the Democrats run the board and all three lose the recounts/run-offs (highly unlikely, but just saying), Reid will kick Liebermann’s butt up between his ears. Otherwise, Joe’s the kindest, nicest, most gentle person Reid has ever known.

Lieberman holds all the cards

If Reid dumps him, he gets two years of procedural opposition guaranteed. On the other hand, Lieberman probably will vote with them much of the time on lots of issues.

They can try to knock him in 2012 if they want, but the Dems would be foolish to needlessly antagonize a vote that will be theirs 80% or more of the time.

The irony of course

is that Reid wouldn’t even be Majority Leader in this Congress if Lieberman hadn’t caucused with the Dems after they stabbed him in the back in the 2006 election cycle.

nor can Harry Reid have the Pelosi/Obama shame of BI-Partisanship called

and the potential of the following….

Joe Lieberman if knowing he’d be thrown out the D caucus anyway, he could (SHOULD) join us NOW! This will return to a 50/50 for this the/an “interim” (transition) session of Congress! Let him work with us (gang of 14 style) to (at least, split) the remaining open appointments that President Bush HAS A RIGHT TO APPOINT to the Judicial Benches!

If Barack wants Republican respect, let him EARN IT! Let him step up, and actually/finally do the right thing. Make him stand up and be counted, no “Present button.” Make him choose to say that Judges should come to the Floor for UP/DOWN without delay and/or obstruction (if even for only a compromised number, half, the available seats. We would have to, in turn, offer no obstruction, or equal cooperation, for the other half – If they earn it!).

Needless to say, I will not hold my breath.

Here’s the problem–there is no place for independents or moderates in Washington, D. C. John McCain learned the hard way that pandering to folks makes you look like an amoeba in the animal and plant kingdom of politics. The biggest misconception taught to school children is that meaningful dialogue and discussion take place in the House and the Senate, You either vote with the Democrats, or wake up with a political horse head in your bed or your shoes in political cement. If you are not for the Democrats, you are against the Democrats–this is too important a time in our nation’s history to have dialogue. There is no discussing anything with a Democrat–as the mob says, if they want your opinion, they’ll give it to you. Washington is simply about power and imposing your party’s will on the people, all the while convincing them it is for their own good. Politicians make rules that somehow simultaneously increase their power and decrease your freedom, and God help you if you try to get in the way! Good luck, Joe–you have been officially given your two week notice!
