Paul Krugman defends Barack Obama, and winds up asserting that his plan would raise taxes on families earning as little as $182,400 annually:
What about the claim, based on Joe the Plumber’s complaint, that ordinary working Americans would face higher taxes under Mr. Obama? Well, Mr. Obama proposes raising rates on only the top two income tax brackets — and the second-highest bracket for a head of household starts at an income, after deductions, of $182,400 a year.
To some degree of course, Barack Obama’s plan as currently written is irrelevant. The question is what message Barack Obama will deliver to the Democratic leadership in Congress. Charlie Rangel is the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and he has already shown his cards. Last year he proposed a bill known as ‘The Mother of All Tax Increases.” It provides for a $3.5 trillion tax increase over the next ten years. It increases income taxes on those earning as little as $150,000. It increases taxes by 26 percent on thousands of small businesses, imposing on them a tax rate 14 points higher than that levied on big corporations.
If Congress sends him such an anti-competitive, punitive, redistributive, massive tax increase, will he veto it?

Exactly.
KBDay (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 4:26PM EST (link)And I’ll go one further. They’ll start with incomes lower than that. Democrats never met a tax they didn’t like. I think Biden probably was laying the groundwork for taking more with his fright speech. Taxes are too complicated for most of us to even gauge the impact. For those filing a short form it may be easier to figure.

Good grief!
popdaddy Tuesday, October 21st at 5:05PM EST (link)So much time wasted on Barry’s campaign rhetoric. If this fool gets elected, he will have no control or desire to influence Rangel,Pelosi and all the other Socialist democrats that actually develop tax legislation in the House.
By the time they finish, the only criteria will be ANYONE who works and pays taxes. There will be no limits to the damage.
Figure out how much you need to live for the next 4 years.
izoneguy (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 5:10PM EST (link)And then quit your job. Stop paying taxes and ask Obama to send you your check. If Obama gets elected this is what I am doing.
The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.
We need a flat/fair tax
Next93 (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 5:10PM EST (link)I for one am very tired of these arguments about at what income level the tax increases start. It’s all just a smokescreen to cover the fact that he wants the government to be doing things it shouldn’t be doing.
If Obama thinks that his programs are a good idea for ANY taxpayer to be funding, then they should be a good enough idea that EVERY taxpayer should be willing to accept an increase.
And by the way, am I the only one who’s incensed that there are people voting who don’t pay federal income taxes? If taxation without representation is enough to cause a revolution, what about representation without taxation? Shouldn’t the people who are paying the bills get a larger say in how it’s spent? How is it that 30% of my income goes to government programs, yet my vote counts exactly as much as people who are in what amounts to a negative tax bracket.
Obama was The One in 2008.
He’ll be a BIGGER one in 2012.

Michael DeWeese (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 5:19PM EST (link)First, they came for the earnings of the rich, to “spread the wealth”. But, I didn’t care and said nothing, because I wasn’t rich.
Then they came for the pay of the upper class, to finance the abortions of unwanted children. But, I again said nothing, after all I wasn’t upper class.
Next they came for the middle class, to pay for the government workers needed to oversee the wealth spreading and the abortions. But again, I said nothing, I wasn’t middle class either.
Finally, they came for the poor, to pay for the common welfare of the nation. And when I looked around for some one to borrow from to pay what they demanded of me, everyone else was poor too.

Indy Tuesday, October 21st at 5:25PM EST (link)Once we have a flat tax, there’ll be no room for lobbying for “tax earmarks” like we saw in this $700 billion bailout bill (which of course went up by $110 billion because of tax earmarks). If we don’t move towards a flat tax, we are going to constantly have this class warfare nonsense every election cycle. Remember, Aristotle’s wise words: “If the majority distributes among itself the things of a minority, it is evident that it will destroy the city.” We need to end the income tax and just move to a flat tax.

joe24pack (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 5:56PM EST (link)to start even lower than that. I’ll hazard a guess that the $182K lower limit will easily be another $100K lower by the time these plans would be implemented. Ordinary two income families as well as ordinary skilled workers would get hit. Yeah, I know, software engineers like me are part of that targeted demographic. Gee it feels unusual being part of the “rich”.

ripperg Tuesday, October 21st at 6:17PM EST (link)I own a small business with aprivate investment firm, employ 144 people and have invested our profits back into the company the past three years, expanding and hiring poeple, we have gone from roughly 70 employees to a 144 over this time.
The shareholders have not taken a discretionary distribution during this time (the only distributins of profits we haev taken have been to pay our quarterly taxes)while our employees have benefitted in the form of higher wages and bonuses. Let me just share with everyone how a real small business will be dealing with an increase in our taxes or what i will refere to has burden cost.
1) we will be redcuing the amount we contribute to our employees 401 K match roughly saving us 10K per month.
2) we are making modifications to our health insurance (most likely going from thousand dollar deductible to 5000 thousand, requring employee to go frompayingh 30% to approxiamtely 50%)
3) We will be removing the following from our payrolls, 1 salary @ 174K, 2 salary @43K, 14 employees in the 30K to 36K range.
4) We are postponing any 2009 merit increase for at least 6 months (these merit increases would equate to an additinal 175K to the payrolls for existing employees.
5) 2008 discretionary bonuses will be cut in half from an approxiamte payout of 145K to about 75K. To put it in perspective our average bonus for 2008 will go to about 2500 per employee from 5000 last year.
6) we our reducing budgets for IT and advertising wich inturn will effect other small business that currently do business with us.
Bottom line is there is a lot of good peopel are going to suffer to pay for the extra burden cost put on our business when our taxes our increased. But i guess that $1000.00 rebate check adn free heath care will compensate for the fact that you don’t have a job anymore.
Regarding This Line of Thought
jabley Tuesday, October 21st at 6:25PM EST (link)I do not agree with Obama’s tax plan, but I disagree with this line of argument against the plan. Arguments against Obama’s tax proposal should be based not on a dollar figure (which is arbitrary at any level you pick), but on a set of principles that argue against the redistribution of wealth. Keep in mind that this number, while meaningfully lower than what Obama claims, is greater than the household income for more than 90% of families in this country (the 95th percentile for family income in 2003 was $154,120–not sure about more recent figures). We can’t be baited into making arguments such as this, due to the simple fact that 19 out of 20 people find this number irrelevant, if not obscene. We are not, nor do we want to be, the party of the top 5%, but making arguments such as this does much to support this unfounded criticism, particularly in these strained financial times.
I’m actually a Democrat pretending to be a Republican, and that’s why I got banned. I’m just too dense to be able to defend my side with facts and reason, so I have to resort to deception, just like President Obama.
Business Question
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 6:43PM EST (link)Might I ask how much more you expect to be paying in taxes if you think all of this is necessary? It would seem to me that if you’re plowing all your profits back into the company, as you say you are, that you really shouldn’t have particularly high profits.
And if you cut all those expenses, won’t your profits go up significantly, forcing you to pay more taxes? It would seem that if you don’t want to pay higher taxes, one solution would just be to hire more employees and increase expenses. But perhaps I’m confused about something.
After Deductions??
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 7:05PM EST (link)I’m a bit confused as to what Krugman was saying. Why did he give the number “after deductions?” I skimmed his piece and don’t think I saw an explanation. But it sounds like he’s just using Obama’s number, but removing itemized deductions from it or something. But I can’t really see why he’d do that. Did I miss something?
Answer to your inquiries
ripperg Tuesday, October 21st at 8:44PM EST (link)When a company makes money like our does you pay tax..The tax burdon on a company like ours is well over 40% when you factor in state, local, and federal taxes… And when you put profits back in the form of inventory and receivables (AKA “WORKING CAPITAL”) there is no deduction or loss on that investment. Simply put if make $1000 net profit and increase my inventory position by that same $1000 my tax burdon is not zero it is in excess of $400.00. Other types investements companies make for long term growth are generally capitalzed with tax deductions spread out over many years. There is no money tree growing out back, the reality is under a barak obama adminstration the shareholders of our organization will see there tax burdon rise, causing us to reduce investment and personel. People who make investments expect a return in the form of increased enterprise value and non-tax distributions… In our case, due to an expected massive tax increase we expect we are going to get, we are being pruden in getting a head of the curve. I want to address the tax issue regarding the employee cuts. You are correct that profits would increase, so lets say that we cut 700K in payroll and all of that falls to the bottom line, we would have about 340K on that 700K if not more under the obama plan, that would at least leave the sahreholders with the other 360K to offset the additional taxes that we are paying on the other income genrated. As to why we just wouldn’t make less money to pay less taxes question, there are many reasons why I would not want to make less. 1) bank agreements and covenants, the more profitable a business the more favorable banking arangements one gets. 2)Fudiciary responsibilty to the shareholders to maximize return on investment. 3) Enerprise value, the greater the EBITDA the greater the enterprise value…
Now if I am just 1 small business imagine the ramifications when millions of small businesses are faced with the same decesions we are.
Surviving Obama
ddstrain (Diary) Tuesday, October 21st at 9:42PM EST (link)You may be attempting sarcasm, but some of us will actually face the choice of
a) being taxed out of house and home if we remain a two income family; or
b) quitting a high paying (and tax paying) job in the prime of one’s earning years.
Either way, we will definitely not be contributing to the economy as we currently do should The Chosen One be elected.

Big Small Business
Doctor Biobrain Tuesday, October 21st at 10:02PM EST (link)Ok, that was a situation I hadn’t thought of, but you still didn’t answer the question. How much more do you expect to be paying under Obama’s plan? Are you seriously telling me that you think you might pay $700k *extra *in taxes next year? Not to doubt you, but that doesn’t sound like anything I’ve heard before. Are you basing this on Obama’s proposal, or on a worst-case scenerio that you think will happen if he is elected?
And just so you know, I’m a CPA with many small business clients, but don’t foresee anything like this happening to them. None of my clients have total revenues that even approach the size of what your payroll must be, and all of them make profits well below what Obama claims his plan will be. By comparison with them, I would not consider you to be a small business. Heck, my largest client only has twenty employees.
And finally, are you suggesting that you’re planning to do this before the tax policy is even written? That seems a bit drastic, even if you wanted to get ahead of the curve.
Redstate improving
psmarc93 Wednesday, October 22nd at 11:39AM EST (link)Call me a lurker, or a troll, whatever — the few times I’ve commented on RedState, I’ve been attacked for any polite disagreement without exception. I check out RedState daily just to see what conservatives are focusing on, and it’s been disappointing in the extreme — constant character assasinations, guilt by association, and generally a huge focus on issues that have no bearing or commentary on the incredibly serious crises facing our country today.
But today I notice the postings here are tending toward practical issues — examinations of Obama’s economic policies and Deomcratic party gaffes for example. Keep it up.
Too little too late? Perhaps, but I yearn for the day when conservatives actually had a consistent philosophy and integrity, William F. Buckley days, and we need debate — not screaming and name-calling — to come to the best solution for our nation together.
McCain’s failure to win this election offers conservatives the opportunity for some soul searching. I hope they rediscover their soul — it’s not enough to smear the other guy, you’ve got to come up with better ideas and not abaondon them as soon as you’re in the majority.
Ehhh, you again...
