The New Inquisition

Saint Andrew Sullivan and His Crusade for Christian Dogma

If you were to torture yourself reading Andrew Sullivan’s rantings, you’d learn that he considers himself a Roman Catholic who differs from essential Church teachings on… ahem important matters. Nevertheless, he’s willing to condemn Sarah Palin for the teachings of her church, since he asserts that she is required to hold these views as a condition of being in it:

Yes, she believes in [the end times]. Of course she believes in them. Her former pastor believes that Alaska will be the refuge for the faithful in the lower 48 states when the Rapture comes. She is a Biblical literalist who denies evolution – who has to deny evolution – to remain in her church. She believes – because she has to believe – that the earth was created 6,000 years ago. And she believes that the Apocalypse will start in the Middle East.

The Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church provides (in part):

2050 The Roman Pontiff and the bishops, as authentic teachers, preach to the People of God the faith which is to be believed and applied in moral life. It is also incumbent on them to pronounce on moral questions that fall within the natural law and reason.

2051 The infallibility of the Magisterium of the Pastors extends to all the elements of doctrine, including moral doctrine, without which the saving truths of the faith cannot be preserved, expounded, or observed.

So Sullivan can differ from the teachings of the Church — in clear contradiction to his church’s assertion — and still consider himself a Roman Catholic. Palin however, is condemned by Sullivan based on the assumption that she cannot and does not do the same.

I guess by Sullivan’s rules, you’d all be welcome to tar him for being anti-woman, closed minded on abortion, or anti-gay. Or you could call him a hypocrite. Or you could say he’s going to hell.

I guess, based on his rules, you could say pretty much anything you wanted to about him.

is that Sully has a blog and Palin doesn’t make herself available to the press – people just project their fears and fantasies onto her.

You really shouldn't link to such trash.

Sullivan’s juvenile fart joke site deserves no more publicity than Stormfront or a porn peddler. He may think he’s special enough to alter centuries of tradition, but he’s alone in his opinion of himself these days. Traffic shouldn’t be directed to such rubbish.

I’ve asked several Obama-supporting people I know the following question:

What is Obama’s greatest accomplishment in his political career?

They almost never have an answer. A couple have said that defeating Hillary in the Dem primary was the greatest. The truth is that he has done very little in his public life. Yet people think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Weird, huh?

Take the fork in the road.

Even if Sullivan's screed is true (always a MAJOR assumption in one of his cheap shot blogs).

streetwise (Diary) Monday, September 22nd at 4:16PM EST (link)

the apolcalyptic thinking of Palin’s former pastor is no more so than Obama’s pastor, and as gamecock would put it, the church of the Obama pew-parked butt of 20 years.

Colorful writer, that gc!

How does Sullivan know this about Palin?

Buzz Brockway (Diary) Monday, September 22nd at 4:16PM EST (link)

Or for that matter, how does Sullivan know what Wasilla Assembly of God church, or the Assemblies of God denomination believe? I searched Wasilla AG’s website and the AG website and could not find where they believe the earth is only 6000 years old or where they believe the Apocalypse will begin in the Middle East. Sound like Urban Legend to me.

Clearly they’re against evolution, so are lots of Christians, but Palin has shown no indication she desires to force anyone to subscribe to her personal religious beliefs.

If someone can point me to proof that I’m wrong about this please do.

Not Worthy

Trust me, Sullivan is not worthy of debate. He is and irrelelvent smear merchant.

I think Sullivan is somewhat correct.

In Judeo-Christian history and eschatology, the age of the earth was estimated to be about 6000 years before. This is based on the biblical interpretation of a passage in the Book of Daniel.

However, everything is not clear. Some passage in the Bible also says that God’s reckoning of time is totally different from ours. For Christians, this is very important to those who believe in the Second Coming of Christ (i.e., the famous 70 weeks). A Catholic Archbishop also made the same calculation indicating that the the date of creation was 4004 BC. Others argue that the date of Creation was 11,000 BC based on the so-called archaelogical facts (not entirely biblical).

However, there is also this passage in the Bible that says 1 day of the Lord is equivalent to 1000 years man.

Thus, everything was really a theory. And there were no firm agreement on the said theory.

In short, Sullivan is ignorant of the very thing that he is attacking:

The same teachings can be found in Jewish eschatology and all Christian eschatology, including the Catholics. Many Christians and Jews do not know this thing because they do not ask their ministers, priests, or pastors on the same. The date of Creation is a very important basis for the theory of Eschatology ( the study of the last things).

It is therefore safe to conclude that:

Sullivan is ACTUALLY attacking the ENTIRE Judeo-Christian religion, not just the AG.

In 2004 he was demanding that someone ask Bush if he believed the Rapture would occur. Isn’t that pretty straightforward Christian doctrine? Revelation and all that?

“Palin doesn’t make herself available to the press”

If you mean “the press” as in people who objectivey report things, she would have better luck looking for Bigfoot. If you mean the cadre of intellectually inferior, sub-human species known as “Journalism School” graduates who view there role as editorialists, she would have to rent the Rose Bowl to have a “press” conference.

Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.

They have a problem with people who actually *believe* in Christianity

She shouldn't make herself available to the National Press.

I’ve long advocated that ALL Republicans should just ignore the NY, DC, LA media; we don’t and never will get any votes there or from the vast majority of people who watch them. Republicans should make news in the places that Republicans run and win. The coverage will be much more fair, the receptions much better, and if the National Press Corps wants to cover, they can tag along. A Republican candidate’s goal should be to make DC and NY reporters learn to think of a Holiday Inn as a luxury hotel and learn to appreciate airplanes with propellors and airports with no jetways – the places real voters live.

I grew up in a non-denominational Christian church that sounds very similar. There was speaking in tongues (my dad spoke in tongues at the dinnertime prayer for years), laying on of hands to cast out demons and thus cure disease, charismatic leaders who could channel the ecstasy of the Spirit and thus cause congregants to fall down in spasms… the whole nine yards.

I have since gone to many different churches with friends, through college, and later. There is a wide range of beliefs, and many (most?) Christians don’t take the Bible literally. My personal favorite churches focused on the life and teachings of Christ, which has nothing to do with creationism or the End Times. One Methodist and one Lutheran church in particular were quite good about this.

Your snark suggests that you define Christianity by a set of dogmas. I hope you expand your horizons on the wide array of Christian faiths to be found in our great country, because such a limiting and divisive view will have negative consequences.

Could she do a press conference with just local press?

pangloss Monday, September 22nd at 6:23PM EST (link)

I mean, don’t invite the beltway crowd, just offer seats to small town papers. That way, she could be seen taking non-scripted questions while the nyt and wapo crowd sit in the overflow room watching the whole thing on closed-circuit.

She did press conferences all the time in AK, she’s good at it. Why not showcase those skills, disarm her critics, and cut the wine-and-cheese press corps out of the loop.

running for any office for the last few years. Not just the “local” press, but the regional or statewide for wherever she is. The NY, DC, LA Axis of Evil should have to chase the story, not have it handed to them.

And she IS good. The AK press is just as liberal and anti-Republican as any other, but when you have to deal with people every day to get your story, it is much harder to be a total a__hole. As I posted before, her problem won’t be answering questions, it will be deconstructing question so that they can be answered. The typical MSM question is a gotcha, leading, or assumes a fact not in evidence. To answer it, you have to get to the question – think Tony Snow. Her problem is doing that without coming accross as bitchy.

Badill_T...I hope you "expand your horizon" to include other parts of the Bible...

Attack Mode (Diary) Monday, September 22nd at 6:36PM EST (link)

I mean, really, you speak about being open minded(while providing proof, nice touch), and then make a blanket accusation about being dogmatic because he has a different interpretation of the Bible than you. I can only attribute this to your own ignorance, which you have shown. Understanding creation and the moral story told of Adam and Eve is key to the redemption from sin that Jesus provided.

So since you are knowingly ignorant and only cite some extreme examples, hoping to “fit in”, I hereby deem you a:

You must have such an emptiness in your heart, that you have to fill it by harassing strangers like this. That’s really sad. Piteous even.

Andrew Sullivan was once a decent enough writer with some insights, now however his zeal for Obama has reduced him to a shadow of his former self.

No need to read his blog to reaffirm what has been obvious for months now.

Point taken. My apologies to pornographers everywhere.
