Reid Blocks Online Predator Bill to Help Obama

Is Oprah Winfrey Being Duped?

This Congress hasn’t accomplished all that much, so you’d think they’d be eager to pass a no-brainer such as bipartisan legislation to protect kids from online predators. You’d be wrong.

Last December, the House passed the Securing Adolescents from Exploitation Online Act by a resounding margin of 409-2. The bipartisan bill expands reporting requirements for child sex exploitation and child pornography, requires providers to disclose the identity of anyone who appears to have violated child pornography laws, directs the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to report child pornography violations to law enforcement, and grants service providers and NCMEC limited immunity from civil and criminal liability for reporting information.

When the bill passed by such a huge margin, it seemed that Senate action was sure to follow soon. But one thing went wrong: John McCain won the Republican presidential nomination. And since he was the sponsor of the Senate version of the bill, the measure was suddenly dead. It didn’t even matter that McCain’s bill was cosponsored by HIllary Clinton and Chuck Schumer; it could not pass.

Fortunately, another good bill was also introduced, addressing some of the same issues. That bill — S. 1738 — creates a National Strategy for Child Exploitation Prevention and Interdiction, as well as a National Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program, and a National Internet Crimes Against Children Data System. It simplifies prosecution of child pornography cases, and increases funding for this effort. The bill is sponsored by Joe Biden. One of the cosponsors is Barack Obama. And wouldn’t you know it — Harry Reid is planning to hold a vote on this bill.

Senator Tom Coburn tried to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. He introduced a third bill that essentially combines the other two. Senate Democrats have blocked the bill from coming to a vote — twice. It seems that only Senator Biden’s bill will see action before the election.

And what about the reforms in the McCain/Schumer/Clinton bill — to find and identify those who spread child pornography? Maybe they’ll get enacted somewhere down the line — once Senator McCain can’t take advantage of his bipartisan work on the issue.

A sidenote: Oprah Winfrey is a party to this — although it’s unclear whether she’s been duped. She devoted her show on Monday to pushing for action on the Biden bill. Perhaps once she gets up to speed on the issue, she won’t push so aggressively for a bill that seems to put politics over children’s safety.

Ried is a scoundrel.

Criterion Chemical was in the black for FY2010!
Not bad considering the forces arrayed against small business these days.
Let’s see about actually making some serious profit this year. Shameless capitalism, by:

All they are doing is giving more fodder for McCain.
If it would have passed then nobody cares.
Same thing on the drill hoax bill. McCain should have
plenty of money going into the stretch. Obama is
already sucking wind. Without the MSM cheering him on
he has nothing. I cannot wait for the debates.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

And yet there's no time for the finance crisis.

Obama Again on the Defensive

ratpacklaw Thursday, September 18th at 2:19PM EST (link)

Obama is again on the defensive. After McCain/Palin’s stump speech in Cedar Rapids, IA this morning, Obama is replying by using the same old lines of: “shake up/reform with who? The 7 powerful lobbyists running your campaign?”. He is urging his supporters to “argue and get in their face” (drudgereport) and that “he may be skinny but he’s tough” (b/c he was bred in Chicago machine politics). As it goes … but McCain/Palin’s strategy with less than fifty days out is very good as they are moving from a “post-convention Palin surge” wave riding, into a full out tag team on the economy and energy. Today’s speeches by both highlight specifics and action that needs to be taken (SEC chair firing, creation of new MFI Trust, eliminate naked short selling, reinstate uptick rule). Moreover, Palin noted that McCain has discussed with her an expanded role as VP to include spearheading energy independence initiatives (she oversees 20% of our nation’s domestic production as Alaska gov.) and also having a key role in reforming government (administrative branch).

And then there is accountability: Palin mentioned, “I’ll put the nation’s checkbook online like I did with Alaska’s checkbook”. People like to hear that. A perfect compliment to McCain’s “if I get a bill with pork / earmarks, I will veto it and make the author of that earmark famous.” Accountability and Visibility/Transparency is what raises comfort levels between an electorate that has little confidence with the federal government and the officials running the place. This is a good move by the McCain campaign. The independents will trust McCain/Palin much more than they would Obama who comes off as more self-interested, his ideas, rather than country first. People like to see and hear for themselves, and want a leader that will take care of the ENTIRE country, not simply move its pieces around to create social equality. Pushing an agenda while promoting transparency so the people can more easily hold their leaders accountable has been lacking and draws a stark contrast to the current administration without saying as much. So much for the “Bush’s thrid term” argument. Obama’s time is dwindling – I predict a “pull out all the stops” desperation atmosphere that will increase as the days go by – which will result in a loss of coordination and unity of messaging in the campaign – gaffe time, and a lost election for the left.

McCain / Palin.

Absolute Madness!

CJB68 Thursday, September 18th at 3:36PM EST (link)

The only thing saving Senator Reid’s butt in this is the apparent lack of thinking voters in his state (or the presence of voters in his hip pocket outnumbering those who aren’t) which keeps him in this position.  The more I hear about the Pelosi-Reid Congress, the more I think about what happened in the later stages of republican Rome, when a handfull of self-appointed “leaders” took potshots at whomever they wanted to see destroyed and the intensity of the whole affair escalated until it was basically a shooting war (with swords and spears instead of guns).  Those who bother to read their history know what resulted from that.

[abstains from swearing]

If only most Americans could take the 30 seconds necessary to read these 7 short paragraphs, perhaps they would have a better understanding of what total rejects this blue senate is comprised of. While some political gaming is expected this is the equivalent of an NBA FLAGRANT FOUL.

The fact that all of this ridiculous maneuvering taxpayers’ expense is intended to generate positive press or talking points for Biden while explaining its disingenuousness is prohibitively laborious for a debate or commercial time allotment is infuriating.

We gotta keep this story in a “lock box” and make sure the people of Nevada are reminded of it next time Senate elections come around.

There are plenty voters, here in Nevada, who think

We’re simply outnumbered by the SEIU in Reno, Carson City and Las Vegas. But, even with that, I think Dingy Harry’s days in the Senate are numbered. Most thinking Nevadans are fed up.

political wars?

ColbyS Thursday, September 18th at 4:01PM EST (link)

I think you were generously aggrandizing to describe this as one of Reid’s ‘wars.’

To me he is wasting our nation’s money and time to essentially write his name on another kid’s homework, except that in this case handing in the homework late results in a delay in bringing child abusers to justice.

When will Republicans ever figure out

mbecker908 (Diary) Thursday, September 18th at 7:17PM EST (link)

that Democrats are not honorable people who “simply have a different view” (thank you GWB).

Elected Democrats in this country are the enemy. What do we get in DC? Idiots like Hagel & Chafee. People who think bipartisanship is good.

We should be enticing Democrats to reach across the aisle. And then chop their arms off when they do. It’s war for the soul of the nation folks. I don’t know that our Party has the will to fight. They’ve never demonstrated that they do.

I agree with you on all points, mbecker.

Investigating Internet crimes against children:Seeking a new law enforcement paradigm

Dr. Frank Kardasz

April 14, 2008, Revised: August 22, 2008

Abstract

For the first time in history, law enforcement officers in the 21st century possess proactive methods to
identify and bring to justice those who sexually abuse minors. In years past, law enforcement had to wait
for reports of child abuse before investigations could begin. But today, using innovative undercover
techniques and the Internet, investigators can proactively seek out and apprehend offenders. Although this
is one of the greatest advancements in the history of the enforcement of crimes against children,
investigators still cannot take full advantage of the innovations. This work explores some of the
stakeholders in the cyber-struggle and the troubling reasons that more resources are not devoted to the
growing problem. The work explores legal, systemic, societal and psychological hurdles related to Internet
crimes against children and suggests a new law enforcement paradigm that better recognizes such crimes.
