What Palin Really Said About Russia

ABC's Edits Make a World of Difference

Here are some of the headlines which followed Charlie Gibson’s interview with Sarah Palin:

  • Palin Would Support War With Russia — SF Chronicle

  • Palin Talks Tough On Iran, Russia in ABC Interview — LA Times

  • Palin Leaves War Option With Russia Open — Sun Sentinel

  • Palin Talks Tough About Russia — UPI

  • Palin Casually Speaks of War With a Nuclear Armed Russia — OpEd News

  • Sarah Palin: We’ll Go To War if Russians Invade Georgia Again — UK Mirror

The headlines clearly play into an image that the Obama campaign is trying to project of Palin: hotheaded and untrustworthy. They play into a long-standing image that Democrats have tried to force on Republicans — that of being warmongers. But the media would have had a harder time writing such headlines if ABC hadn’t hacked up the interview the way they did:

Palin’s extended remarks about defending our NATO allies were edited out to make it seem that she was ready to go to war with Russia.

GIBSON: And under the NATO treaty, wouldn’t we then have to go to war if Russia went into Georgia?

PALIN: Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you’re going to be expected to be called upon and help.

But NATO, I think, should include Ukraine, definitely, at this point and I think that we need to — especially with new leadership coming in on January 20, being sworn on, on either ticket, we have got to make sure that we strengthen our allies, our ties with each one of those NATO members.

* We have got to make sure that that is the group that can be counted upon to defend one another in a very dangerous world today.*

GIBSON: And you think it would be worth it to the United States, Georgia is worth it to the United States to go to war if Russia were to invade.

PALIN: What I think is that smaller democratic countries that are invaded by a larger power is something for us to be vigilant against. We have got to be cognizant of what the consequences are if a larger power is able to take over smaller democratic countries.

And we have got to be vigilant. We have got to show the support, in this case, for Georgia. The support that we can show is economic sanctions perhaps against Russia, if this is what it leads to.

It doesn’t have to lead to war and it doesn’t have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries.

* His mission, if it is to control energy supplies, also, coming from and through Russia, that’s a dangerous position for our world to be in, if we were to allow that to happen.*

This was Palin’s first interview since being nominated to the vice presidency. ABC news had to know that it would be dissected ad nauseam, given her newness to the national scene. Yet they chose to carve the interview in a way that left a false impression of what Palin said on one of the touchiest of national security topics.

Once this election is over, the mainstream media is going to wonder why it got the reputation for being so biased, and why they’ve made a huge swath of their audience so skeptical of their reliability. It may even dawn on them that media bias is the mother’s milk that conservative talk radio and blogs need to thrive. And even if they decide to reform their ways, it will take years to regain the trust that they’ve lost.

They were whining about it following the GOP convention! The problem is – they really don’t care. Their objective is to get their guy elected. They will not stop at anything until they are victorious in that goal. It is widely documented that the vast majority of those working in the media are Democrats. Why would they behave any differently than they are now? They have carte blanch ability to taint their news however they desire, and since all their cronies co-conspirators colleagues are also leftists, no one will call them on it.

I am at a loss to suggest how to stop this. They have the corner on the market.

I wonder why she even agreed to do it.

I was very disappointed when I heard she would do this interview. It’s like playing football with a team that constantly cheats. Why bother? Why not choose a more reputable news org like FOX News? I hope the McCain camp learns their lesson and tells the drive-bys to take a hike next time they come calling.

Her answer reflected exactly what NATO is all about. Had she delivered some vague answer they would have printed “Palin doesn’t know what NATO is.”

I’m sitting here listening to the Monica Crowley show. She’s playing excerpts from Gibson’s interview with Obama. I can’t believe the contrast between the two! Gibson’s gushing over BO is over the top.

The good news is it’s too late. Palin has arrived and people have taken sides. From the looks of things, more people came over to us.

TheEssene Saturday, September 13th at 2:34PM EST (link)

I don’t understand your arguments. She said Georgia should join NATO. As she noted, that alone means we go to war with Russia should it attack Georgia. Nothing cut out changes those facts. She also said Russia was unprovoked. WHAT?!?Russia had the right to be in South Ossetia as peacekeepers and Georgia attacked. This reflects McCain’s position too. Sadly this hawkish position has been bought and sold by Georgia through its lobbyists now a part of the McCain campaign. McCain seem determined to turn the US Military to a mercenary operation.

You must have been drinking the Kool-aid for quite a while. Those “peacekeepers” along with ethnic Russian militias were killing and intimidating the ethnic Georgians in both of those provinces. Georgia attacked to try to protect its own.

While you’ve been buying the Russian versiob hook, line and sinker, the Russians have been making and breaking promises about a withdrawal.

I know you liberals think we should roll up our borders and tell the world to take a hike, but countries, like Georgia, who are trying to develop productive democracies and get out of the shadow of communism, deserve our help and support.

This is Article 5 of NATO Treaty!

Palin’s “Perhaps’ SO is just perfect. Gibson is an arrogant fool. Even the person who coined the term Bush Doctrine said that Gibson made a major journalistic gaffe.

Article 5
The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognised by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security.

But we have faith that we shall not prove false to the memories of the men of the mighty past. They did their work, they left us the splendid heritage we now enjoy. We in our turn have an assured confidence that we shall be able to leave this heritage unwasted and enlarged to our children and our children’s children.

Wait, Governor, she was elected Governor of Alaska, Clinton was Governor of Arkansas, yet you deem him more qualified than Palin? Why, because he held the position longer?

What about Gore, was he ever in an executive position? Mayor, Governor, I ask because I don’t know. Okay, how qualified was Hillary? What executive experience has she had? How about Obama, I mean, he points to running his campaign as the answer for executive experience. How qualified is that?

PALIN: There in the state of Alaska, our international trade activities bring in many leaders of other countries.

GIBSON: And all governors deal with trade delegations.

PALIN: Right.

GIBSON: Who act at the behest of their governments.

PALIN: Right, right.

GIBSON: I’m talking about somebody who’s a head of state, who can negotiate for that country. Ever met one?

But the fact that there were both questions and answers edited is very problematic. With creative editing, dogs can sing Jingle Bells.

“The press is so powerful in its image-making role that it can make a criminal look like he’s the victim and make the victim look like he’s the criminal. If you aren’t careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.”– Malcolm X, Audubon Ballroom, December 13, 1964

When men yield up the privilege of thinking, the last shadow of liberty quits the horizon.

Odd how they brag about it.

Personally, I blame the cult of self-esteem. Way too many people grow up thinking that they’re beautiful snowflakes, on precisely zero evidence whatsoever.
