John McCain is airing a new ad on stem cell research:
Republican presidential nominee John McCain debuted a radio ad Friday designed to declare his unequivocal support for stem cell research.
McCain voted in the Senate to expand federal funding for the controversial research but Democrats and advocates of the science have expressed concern that McCain’s support has wavered.
Not so, according to the radio spot and a McCain spokesman.
The ad does not specifically refer to embryonic research, which is opposed by most politicians and activists who, like McCain, do not support abortion rights. The omission is not a signal that McCain is backing away from his record in favor of embryonic stem cell research, spokesman Brian Rogers said.
The ad is on YouTube:
Prior to selecting Sarah Palin and solidifying conservative support, McCain had tread lightly on issues important to conservatives. As he did so, he heard plenty of criticism from Democrats eager to paint him not as Maverick, but as Bush II. On immigration and now on stem cells, he clearly feels comfortable angering the base. Conservatives in turn, have come awfully far from where they were 6 months ago with regard to McCain. Back then, most felt some disdain for the nominee who had angered them in the past and seemed a sure loser in the future. Now he looks like he might be the winning horse. And in Sarah Palin, conservatives have a clear stake in McCain’s success.
Politically, it’ll probably work for McCain. Not many Republicans will back Obama — no matter what happens. And it gives undecideds one more reason to believe he won’t be the same as George Bush. But if McCain wins, it presages some intramural fights down the road.

Given the DRASTIC difference between EMBRYONIC and NON-EMBRYONIC the term “stem cell” by itself is meaningless and its a tactic the left uses to mislead voters from knwoing they favor harvesting humans to be killed for experiments.

I'm hoping for a moot argument
pilgrim (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 6:48PM EST (link)If there continues to be medical advances in non-embryonic stem-cell research, and breakthroughs are made, then the medical community does not require a battle over embryonic stem cells. It the medical community has no needs for any embryonic stem cells then the argument is moot.
Silver lining...
Elizabeth (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 7:05PM EST (link)I, for one, am encouraged that Sarah Palin’s name is not featured prominently in this ad. That gives me hope that in that intramural fight, we’ll have an ally in the White House.
I also agree with gamecock and pilgrim above; we need to be very clear in our discussions about stem cells on the distinctions between embryonic and non-embryonic research. Not doing so does a disservice to an ill-informed public.

This is just like the Amnesty Bull ads. Amnesty did him no good in this campaign and he keeps running ads on it assuming that all Hispanics support amnesty and that those who do will consider supporting McCain. I can think of some pro-life folks that will be ticked and won’t vote Obama, but may feel less motivated to vote for McCain.

I’m against it because it’s lousy science. Granted, George Bush was against it on moral grounds, but the outcome was better than we could of hoped. Why use embrionic stell cells, when you can turn someone’s own skin cells or cells from their teeth into stem cells. Even many of the scientists who were studying embrionic stem cells have moved onto adult stem cells.

Think about it. Obama says he’s the Moderate One, but when I ask my Obamafriends to name me issues where he agrees with the Republican (or even centrist) points of view, they stammer like Barry without a teleprompter. McCain, on the other hand, is truly a moderate on many issues. Additionally, that point of view (where we were worried about his maverickness) is neutralized by Palin.
Win-win.

Well you see it one way, I see it another. Namely the Republican party turning from a Hard Right social conservative bent(President Bush), to a Center Right stance in the primaries with John McCain and Rudy G. leading for a large portion of the Primary.
The current race is mostly about the War in Iraq, and economic issues of taxation and spending. McCain and Palin are pretty strong on social issues, but they are not running as social conservatives. Indeed they are running as government reformers who happen to be socially conservative, a big difference.

which reminds me....
Matthew Morris (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 8:03PM EST (link)If issue #1 is whether or not we should support or finance embryonic stem cell research (federally funded or otherwise), using “embryos produced by IVF which are destined to be destroyed in any event”, THEN:
Issue number one needs to bumped down to issue number two.
The new issue number one ought to be: Why does our society promote, condone, or even allow IVF-related procedures where excess embryos are created?
Seems like we (Palin-grade pro-lifers) let that one get away from us. And now, destroying embryos is the de facto practice, just in a different venue. So what grounds do we now have to say they shouldn’t be used for research?
Isn’t potentially life-saving research a better use than plain-old-destruction after all?
If they can be destroyed for the sake of wanting to have a child that shares your DNA, why can’t they be destroyed for research- especially since they already exist and will be destroyed anyway?

You actually think a political party that has any hope of having a majority at the ballot box wants to get enmeshed in matters such as regulating IVF? You want to start telling couples that want to have children that the Federal government is going to get in the middle of medical science based on the morals of same?

Theo of Theoretic (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 8:44PM EST (link)I, for one, love this advertisement. I’m a supporter of non-embryonic stem cell research, and think it does not get enough attention lately.
I also love the fact that McCain is putting out ads about “the issues” that people care about now, instead of continuing to go down that lipstick road. I think that ad (and the other attack ads this past week) have hurt him after his moving and powerful convention speech about accepting the best ideas and appealing to independents. I really hope his campaign continues to do more positive ads like this on issues. Some negative ads are certainly okay, but it’s bad when they dominate the campaign.
Also, I do think this issue can sway many independent voters. Issues like this that the Republican party has traditionally been dogmatic about are not the way to win the critical election this year.
Take that, Mr. Obama, who claims we ignore the issues!

Not exactly, SteveLA
Matthew Morris (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 8:47PM EST (link)Maybe a sloppy comment on my part.
I was more-so wondering aloud about the issue, rather than prescribing solutions to a problem. And not so much suggesting that the Republican party get involved in such matters, at least at this time.
I am basically wondering where the pro-life movement has been with regard to this issue. And now observing the repercussions on the playing field.
I remember a few years ago when I first learned about IVF and the fact that many embryos are left over oftentimes. (or is it always?) I was quite appalled.
But I do have to say I am consistent in my views. Destroying embryos for IVF is in my opinion no more merely a matter of medical science than is destroying embryos for stem cell research… or first trimester abortion, for that matter.

What the heck is McCain thinking?
paint_it_red (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 9:07PM EST (link)This can do him no good.
One, this risks pissing off the base.
Two, this does not win him the middle. Independnet voters care about bread and butter issues far more and this is not on the public radar.
Three, the Democrats use this as a wedge issue. The GOP candidate either gets accused of bowing to the religious right or pisses off social conservatives. If I have no confidence he will not veto embryonic stem cell funding, (which is far less than what I want – an outlaw of the proven to be useless research known to take life not even for “women’s choice”), can I still vote for him? That is the question social conservatives will now be asking. When your opponent is drowning, do you throw him a rope? Not everyone here will like that, but it is a fair question if you believe, as McCain has stated he does, that life begins at conception.
Stem cell should not be brought up by the GOP right now. We can win that argument later, but we don’t have the time to do a massive public education campaign on that now, and anything short of that screws ourselves. Just don’t go there. Don’t.

Her husband, not her, was a great President twenty years ago, and for darn sure she does not represent the social conservative base of this party. Support of embryonic stem cell research is not okay. Its far, far from okay.
And, a lot of undecided voters that I know are Pro-Life voters who may come around to McCain since we may now be able to overturn Roe, but will look at this and say McCain is not committed to Life. You can’t say life begins at conception and then not oppose embryonic stem cell research. You don’t get to obfuscate on the issue. If you cannot say you oppose it, then just don’t bring it up. A lot of social conservatives are going to be pissed off by this.
The reason the crowds have swelled, the volunteer and grassroot ranks are exponentially growing, the bumper stickers are more numerous as well as the yard signs is that McCain’s selection of Palin energized the base and drew in independents. Without the social conservative base, he does not win this election. I fear his poll numbers are going to go down from this.

1) understand life to begin at conception &
2) understand embryonic stem cell research necessarily destroys that life;
And, those who pay attention to the science of it, who know that embryonic stem cell research has not, despite billions of dollars of taxypayer funded government spending, achieved a single cure/treatment/glimpse of achievement, and diverted money from highly successful non-embryonic stem cell research (which is the point we need to raise to win this issue), may be pissed off too.

Doc Holliday (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 9:36PM EST (link)You say you are against embryonic stem cell research. You say your reason is that “life begins at conception”. So for your argument to work, embryonic stem cell research must destroy a precious life.
Now, does McCain support killing babies for embryonic stem cell research? Or is he talking about research on embryos that would not be used for creating life, but just to be discarded?
I am not an expert in this field, and I will make the assumption that few in this thread are. I have heard we don’t need embryonic research and I believe that. But if embryonic research, on embryos that would otherwise be discarded, could support the LIFE of millions who are suffering and dying, then God would look very unfavorably on we who allowed suffering in the name of fundamentalism.

I'd also point out in that vein,
paint_it_red (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 9:40PM EST (link)That Brownback endorsed McCain and was an apologist for him on this issue.
In any event, the math is simple. Can’t win without the social conservatives. And this is likely to come up in a townhall next week and get more attention than McCain and Palin probably want.
Its just not good politics to change the subject when you’re winning, to change the subject to a wedge issue you lose on, to piss off the base, or to think you’re reaching independents on an issue they by and large do not care about.

Not buying that distinction
paint_it_red (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 10:00PM EST (link)First of all, since you are dismissing my opinion as “fundamentalist” as social conservatives often are, I would point out I am not a fundamentalist. Even if I were, your characterization is offensive and an off the mark. That type of God v. Science (self censored) is unacceptable. Maybe you should self-censor a little more.
Second, you observe that for my argument to work embryonic stem cell research must destroy a precious life. I’ll assume for the moment that you did not mean to distinguish between “precious” and “non-precious” life with that comment. The science is incontrovertible. Embryonic stem cell destroys life.
Third, you offer the excuse that the embryos would just be discarded, so he is not the efficient cause of these human lives being destroyed. With the federal funding the Democrats want, especially if they have “unequivocal” support even from a McCain White House, it is clear they will need new stem cell lines once they exhaust the current embryonic ones. Even if the federal government is not funding people coming in and creating embryos for research, if they fund the research, the market will inevitably be there for researchers who will want the embryos. We have already seen this through the state funding of it.
Last, you state this research could benefit millions. Respectfully, not so. Billions have now been diverted to this worthless research, and on the taxpayer dime, that could have and should have gone to other forms of stem cell research that has proven successful in scores of areas. Stem cells can be obtained from umbillical cords that have the same properties embryonic stem cell support advocates point to as the unique advantage of embryonic stem cell research, that the cells have not yet been coded to form anything specific. The same research can already be done under existing venues without the ethically unacceptable destruction of human life. All they have been able to do thus far with ESCR is create tumors.
Are there some scientists who still say the research could possibly be successful? Sure, but maybe they stand to benefit from government grants, and even they have to acknowledge it has not been successful thus far.
Last, even if it were a successful, or potentially successful research, it would still not be okay to be destroying human life.

My point is not that Nancy Reagan did not do plenty for this country. She did. But she does not speak for me on this issue.
I do not have “scorn” for those with “termidity” to disagree with me, as you apparently do for anyone who happens to be a single issue voter, (which I’m not, just read my posts). If you think characterizing those whom you disagree with as “dogmatic” reflects respectful conversation, perhaps you should reconsider.
Many voters have litmus issues, however, including social conservatives, without whom McCain cannot win. That is my point.

Perfectly true
paint_it_red (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 10:19PM EST (link)We cannot win without the maverickness of McCain either. All parts of this coalition are needed for victory. But there are tons of issues McCain could choose to highlight at this juncture instead of this one. He has a great maverick track record he can talk about. He can point to his numerous examples of bipartisanship through the years. He can talk about his proven commitment to work across the aisle on hosts of issues.
McCain’s ad itself does not bother me so much as his spokesperson’s comment. Or so much as the inevitable pickle he will now be in as this issue inevitably arises in a town hall sometime soon and he has to state whether he supports ESCR. He has put himself in a position, quite unnecessarily, where he must choose between his maverick nature and alienation of social conservatives.
I want McCain to win. But, in my opinion, this does not help him. I hope I’m wrong.

So much for Obama as the only one making unforced errors...
CatholicWhiteboy (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 10:25PM EST (link)I want to be very clear…for this entire campaign season, I was wavering between “sitting this one out” and “holding my nose while I punch the ballot for McCain.” However, once Palin was selected for VP, I’m in the crowd that was ready to get completely on board.
This ad is a suckerpunch to the gut of social conservatives.
You can argue whether or not the past 8 years have gone “too far” right on the social issues (you can go “too far” in favor of life? really? we want to be that relativistic?), but at the end of the day, if social conservatives stay home, McCain loses.
The Palin nomination was a masterstroke to bring the so-cons back into the fold. An ad like this makes the selection look more like political manipulation than actual conviction.
Now, I’m willing to give McCain the benefit of the doubt…but he only gets this one. It’s real easy to release version 2.0 of this ad that says “adult stem cell research,” continuing the Bush policy of funding existing lines and prohibiting new lines, while mentioning protecting ALL life, from embryonic form to old age form. Get that done tomorrow, and we’ll call it even.
But this is something that NEVER should have happen. I don’t see Obama running massive pro-ESCR ads. In fact, if you rank the issues of this election, ESCR is so far down the list, it’s not even funny. This ad never should have run.
And it NEVER should have been promoted on the front page of this site. The title and subtitle are practically a giant middle finger to so-cons. “…Maverick is Back…Having Solidified the Base, McCain Can be McCain Again.” How are we to read that in any other way as “hey, you guys that put a premium on life…welcome back to the fold…enjoy some punch, sit back, and watch yourselves be used yet again.”
This ad needs to be replaced immediately, or all forward momentum from the Palin selection will be gone before you can say “President Obama.”

dwarfmama (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 10:48PM EST (link)Embryonic Stem Cell Research is LEGAL. It’s just not eligible for federal funds.
Research facilities are required to keep the ESCR projects separate from the federally funded projects – which, as I understand it, means that they cannot use any supplies, equipment, or instrumentation paid for with federal funds.

On Stem Cells - From the Campaign Website
Michael Parrish (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 10:58PM EST (link)JohnMcCain.com: Human Dignity and the Sanctity of Life
Addressing the Moral Concerns of Advanced Technology
Stem cell research offers tremendous hope for those suffering from a variety of deadly diseases – hope for both cures and life-extending treatments. However, the compassion to relieve suffering and to cure deadly disease cannot erode moral and ethical principles.
For this reason, John McCain opposes the intentional creation of human embryos for research purposes. To that end, Senator McCain voted to ban the practice of “fetal farming,” making it a federal crime for researchers to use cells or fetal tissue from an embryo created for research purposes. Furthermore, he voted to ban attempts to use or obtain human cells gestated in animals. Finally, John McCain strongly opposes human cloning and voted to ban the practice, and any related experimentation, under federal law.
As president, John McCain will strongly support funding for promising research programs, including amniotic fluid and adult stem cell research and other types of scientific study that do not involve the use of human embryos.
Where federal funds are used for stem cell research, Senator McCain believes clear lines should be drawn that reflect a refusal to sacrifice moral values and ethical principles for the sake of scientific progress, and that any such research should be subject to strict federal guidelines.

This information + the fact that the word embryonic is not used in the ad tells me that he wasn’t advocating ESCR.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with adult stem cell research and can’t think of any social objectives to it.
SteveLA, shouldn't McCain's ad tell the whole truth?
Mike gamecock DeVine (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 11:15PM EST (link)That’s what I am saying. I favored the Bush pre-911 compromise re federal funding and am against creating embryos for destruction. I called out the 2006 Missouri ads with MJ Fox because they used the meaningless “stem cell” research term without further description so as to hide the distinction and make it look like repubs were extreme.
It is not extreme to “only” favor ASCR, cord blood and the 2 others, all of which have produced actual results as opposed to ZERO for ESCR, and one of which (skin) promises to produce stem cells identical to those from embryos.
McCain is trying to fool people as well.
The extreme position, it seems to me are those that insist on federal funding for ESCR.

And, he’s voted in favor of federal funding for it. This is problematic for Pro-Lifers, those who oppose wasteful federal spending, those who want research money spent on promising sciences and not lies pushed by the NARAL lobby, and I’m not sure if anybody needed this from McCain.
Also, we’re looking at a Democratically controlled Congress that has twice only been stopped from federally funding ESCR due to Bush’s veto. This ad says, “see how I’m different than Bush? I won’t veto this like Bush!” Again, I hope I’m wrong.

The main problem GC, is that a federal ban is as silly as federal expansion
BlackConservative (Diary) Saturday, September 13th at 11:34PM EST (link)This should not be an issue for the federal government, as I said downthread, but an issue for the states. The fact that ESCR has not produced anything is proof that the federal government should not be wasting taxpayer money. But if the state of New Jersey wants to, by all means let them. I think the best way to go about this is through a federalist approach, which would make everyone get what they want. From a libertarian fiscal position, this is just one more thing that the federal government should not be involved in on either side. Remember GC, a government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take it all away.

You should go back and listen to the advertisement. I don’t think it said anything about what type of stem cell research McCain was favoring, just that he was favoring Federal dollars to support whatever “it” is.
I do realize that there is a tendency in some quarters to hear the clarion call of the Snipe Hunting Horn blowing on this issue any time it comes up, but I’m not hearing it. I’m also not one of the base social conservative types looking for something..anything…just give me a chance to get my nose out of joint over and threaten to not vote for McCain or maybe just hold my breath and turn blue and not vote at all. By the way, I’ve been reading all those sort of crocodile tear posts from single issue voters sense McCain secured the nomination, and it has become tiresome.
McCain is plenty conservative on the social issues, and Sara Palin ain’t exactly a member of Planned Parenthood, but I guess that’s not enough for some who are looking for reasons to be upset.

I don't get it
Palin_Dealundecided_undecided Sunday, September 14th at 12:10AM EST (link)This is another of the “new” republican issues that seem to define the party these days that I just don’t get. I’ve been luke-warm on McCain and would have preferred someone with more hard-headed business experience like Romney, but I appreciate McCain’s view on this subject – though few others.
Aren’t there many fertilized eggs in fertility clinics across the country that get tossed all the time? Why don’t we see the fundamentalists up in arms about this?
I would think that the “party of life” would want to support research that would extend life, and improve life; even if that meant using already existing eggs for research, especially if those eggs would likely eventually be tossed out with the trash.
I double checked my facts with a friend who has been a nurse in a fertility clinic at a major hospital for many years. She assured me the eggs are tossed with the garbage if they aren’t used for research.
To me, as a disillusioned Republican, I just don’t get why we would dilute a good economic and defense message with these hard to defend culture issues. They always smack of holier-than-though people trying to impose their beliefs on others.
That is not a Republican value I can support. I think its time we left Rovian wedge issues behind and got back to basics.

Does McCain want to lose thousands of grass-roots Catholic and evangelical supporters who would have volunteered for his campaign?
When McCain was in South Carolina battling Huckabee in the primary, he was pandering to So-cons and claiming that he was willing to change his stance on ESCR.
Now he moves left. This is unacceptable. In a word: terrible.

Tomlinson Douthat (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 12:59AM EST (link)There are some pretty big loopholes here.
Note that it doesn’t say which moral and ethical principles.
Which does distinguish him from Obama, I believe. However, nothing is said about the use and destruction of pre-existing embryos (from, say, the “leftovers” of IVF treatments) for research purposes, which is very much at issue.
That is, he supports research that does not involve the use of human embryos, but this is different from saying that he opposes research that does involve the use of human embryos, about which he is silent.
Again, there should be moral guidelines, but it remains unaddressed which ones these should be. Are they merely those that would prevent fetal farming and the like? Or would these guidelines prevent federal subsidies for the destruction of human embryos?
On the website, as in the radio ad (Is it talking about embryo-destructive research, or the non-controversial kinds?), the McCain campaign is phrasing his position in such a way that anyone, whatever their own position on this, might be able to justify believing that McCain shares that position. Maybe this is smart politics, but it’s hardly Straight Talk.

He can actually make a grab for SoCons and other common sense Americans by using his answer to explain as Elizabeth has, that there is a difference when using the term stem-cell, and furthermore, since his vote, there are many many more scientific opportunities that have come forth where embryonic is no longer needed.
He could go further to repeat his Saddleback commentary on when human life begins and make another swipe at Obama for his inane defense in IL of doctors who allow for termination of post-abortive babies.

BlackConservative (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 1:23AM EST (link)I’m surprised your not somewhere pouting that you were wrong again and that McCain didn’t pick America’s Pastor for VP. Please tell me where in the ad that was run or in his website McCain will show that he is for ESCR. And seriously, you’re still crying about South Carolina? If you and the rest of the Christian Right nutjobs are going to go nuts over Stem Cell research without any mention of embryos, perhaps you may grow to sympathize how the rest of us feel about all of you people ramping up spending and screaming about Terry Schiavo instead of running the government. But by all means, if this is your stop off of the Straight Talk Express, we won’t miss you. OK, I get your point...
Nick Haynes (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 1:50AM EST (link)and I wish it weren’t so. However, over 2/3 of the American electorate (even a lot of social conservatives) are in favor of ESCR (with some limitations). As much as we may not like it, this is the cards we’ve been dealt. If we had a Reaganesque figure this year, we might be able to move the electorate closer to not having to consider ESCR. But that’s not the case.
And, I don’t fault Nancy. She had to suffer 10 years of her beloved Ronnie gradually going downhill to the point where he couldn’t even recognize his own children. And, she’s got people in her ear saying that ESCR would have possibly saved him from that. No matter how wrong those people are, I don’t fault her-I fault them. She’s in it for the right reasons, but unfortunately, the left is using her for a propaganda piece.

Adjoran (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 2:02AM EST (link)It is positively IDIOTIC to run it. This is not a major issue in the campaign – has it even been mentioned before now?
WHO precisely is going to vote for McCain because of this ad? Not 1000 votes to be had nationwide . . . but how many could be lost? And for what point?
Every ad we run from now to election should tout tax cuts, spending cuts, earmark reform, or hit Obama as a lying misogynist empty suit with radical and criminal associations and no record of reform or bipartisan cooperation against his party leadership. Anything else is wasted money.
PLUS – it breaks the cardinal rule of debating: when you are kicking ass, NEVER introduce a new subject.

Gary (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 3:01AM EST (link)The way some people on this site get loose with the name calling towards the “christian nutjobs”. This is the second time in 2 day’s I have seen an angry tone taken toward’s Christian’s and single issue voters.
And when exactly did culture issue’s get hard to defend? Roe vs. wade is a joke decision that people have grown to accept. Choice is not a right given in the Constitution. It was made up by the bench which is something everyone should be scared of. And good luck winning the election without the people you mock Blackrepub. McCain was more than wanting until he got us wacko’s on board.
As far as this ad goes, I get it. He is reaching some people that he needs to reach to win the election. While the ad is vague on specific’s, I trust McCain’s straight answer at Saddleback that life begin’s at conception and is sacred. I take that as including embryonic stem cells too. The thing that really bother’s me is that alot of this issue is strictly theory with no real proof to back it up. Kind of like global warming. The science is moving though, and I think there is a way for both sides to be satisfied.
I agree with adjoran the most in this thread. Why bring up a new subject when everything is going great? No one has even talked about this issue and all it will do is tick people off.

Hey...
Mr_Write Sunday, September 14th at 6:18AM EST (link)I’m calling FOUL here, because you just dumped on the so-called “Christian Right nutjobs” that represent a major segment of McCain’s base.
1.) Most Christians are not nutjobs (Yes, even us conservative ones)
2.) Your blatantly bigoted statement violates the rules of this forum
3.) Most “CRNj’s” are NOT single-issue voters (that includes me), and even those that are have as much right to discuss this and other abortion-related issues as you do
4.) I understand the ad to represent McCain’s support for federally-paid stem cell research, NOT Embryonic stem cell research. I oppose any kind of federal meddling in this issue, but I am still going to vote for McCain.
So, I pretty well understand the issue being discussed and can express a reasoned opinion about it.
Yet according to you, I am “Christian right nutjob” and am a “single issue voter”.
This kind of bigotry and hatred I’d expect from the folks over at Kos, not here. So, you need to stop it…RIGHT NOW! (same goes to you, Anteater, because you just agreed to the content of a post that is as hate-filled and disgusting as anything from the “left-wing nutjobs”!)

Cynical Move From McCain
olderthangandalf Sunday, September 14th at 8:33AM EST (link)I think the so-called base is about 1000 times more ecstatic about Sarah Palin’s selection than maybe they ought to be. The reality is that, if elected, McCain is likely to serve out his four years, and he’s likely to serve it out as the same old John McCain.
McCain realized he needed the base when it came time to pick a VP. In his heart, he wanted Joe Lieberman, who is pro-choice from the word go. If he couldn’t have Lieberman, his follow up personal picks according to the inside scuttlebut were pro-choicers such as Ridge.
Saner heads prevailed. He was persuaded that if he actually wanted to win, he needed to pick a pro-life candidate or the base would not turn out for him.
Smart move.
Here’s the question, though. Come July 2009 or 2010, when the Democrats control the Senate 55-45 or so, who is he going to need to get his Supreme Court pick through? The base, or Harry Reid? Sadly for the base, the advise and consent power goes to the Democratically controlled Senate.
It would not surprise me one bit to see McCain go to Lieberman for his first Supreme Court pick. I can see him saying that Lieberman is like Roberts and Alito in that he is a solid lawyer, and will not legislate from the bench. He would respect rather than overturn long held precedents (like, not incidentally, Roe v. Wade, which goofy as it is as a matter of con law is still the long established law of the land). He would get through the Senate in nanosecond if only because the Dems would see it as a sure way to get a fully Democratic liberal into his seat.
I’m surprised McCain ran this ad. I think it reflects not only a misunderstanding of what pro life is all about (either the embryo is a human life at the moment of conception or it isn’t; it cannot be that it is a life when it’s in a womb but not a life when it’s in a petri dish) but also profound cynicism. It also reflects a certain arrogance towards the base. He figures he’s got them; already, now he can disregard them.
Newsflash: moderates don’t much care about stem cell research. In the abstract, they are for it because maybe it can cure cancer, diabetes and the common cold, but they haven’t thought about it or what the costs are. It’s not why they get out bed on a cold morning to go vote.
Pro life people, on the other hand, do care. And now he’s just told them what he thinks about them and how deeply he really cares about the issue.
A firestorm will break out. When it does, I predict McCain will end up saying that what he really means is that he supports non-embryonic stem cell research – not because that’s where he really is, but because that will make it go away for a while.
McCain is running a very cynical campaign. As we cheer that on, we need to think for a minute what that means for conservatives if he also chooses to run a very cynical presidency.
I wish Thompson had run a better campaign.

There are stem cells in breast milk.
Other places to find stem cells: bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, and regenerative endometrial cells (i.e., the result of Aunt Flo’s monthly visit). That’s in addition to the stem cells made from reprogrammed wisdom teeth and adult skin.
The website doesn't address ESCR per se
Sean (SIConservative) (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 6:15PM EST (link)His website addresses peripheral issues. To be sure, I’m glad that he opposes the creation of embryos for research purposes and human cloning, though I don’t find either of them especially impressive. I find it troubling that any candidate on either side would support them. His site, though, does not address the use of stem-cells from abortion early in the pregnancy.
As you know, he has voted in favor of federal funding for ESCR, though I did see a single report earlier that he had abandoned that position in South Carolina. I don’t know where he currently stands. I find it terribly unfortunate, especially in light of recent scientific developments, that he has decided to walk a fine line of avoiding making a clear public statement on the issue. In such a statement, he could explain to the American public that, ethical questions aside, there is no longer any reason at all to support the research. Sure, some may say that the media would make it impossible for him to make such an explanation, but if he can’t explain that now, how can we expect him to make a clear case for any national policy as President?
I hope and expect that he will have to clarify his position during one of the debates. I think it was Rep. Feeney who wrote on this website a few months ago that when we focus on principles, we win. When we focus on issues, we lose. Those opposing federal funding for ESCR have both the moral and scientific high ground, and it would be a perfect opportunity to flip the national discussion on the issue 180 degrees. If McCain could do that, he could show himself to be a true political leader and help him in terms of assuming the reform mantle. If, instead, he goes along to get along, I’d have no reason to expect anything other than four years of preemptive surrender on domestic issues.
I cant see that happening

Mocking "I'll vote for Mac, but maybe others..."
jessehammer Sunday, September 14th at 8:12PM EST (link)I’m sick to death of you people who wring your hands about what this might do to McCain’s standing among So/Cons, yet at the end of your screed you say “But I myself am voting for him”.
If you’re going to vote for Mac anyway, then why are you trying to undermine his support among others? Who the hell says that you speak for other So/Cons?
You people (obviously not everybody on this thread, but you know who you are) aren’t nearly as frightened of Obama as you should be — Otherwise, you’d have gotten over your foot-stomping tantrums about McCain being the nominee, months ago! Who cares whether he got the nomination because of Dems or Indies (or Whigs or Tories or Anarchists)??? HE’S THE NOMINEE, SO GROW UP ALREADY — And it didn’t help your “cause” that he was up against 5 or 6 Reagan-wannabees who, like the Keystone Kops, couldn’t get out of one another’s way!
(To the guy still crying in his beer over Huckabee — As Nick Haynes said [about 9 times]), Huckabee is as pro-life as Linclon Chafee of Rhode Island!)
You know where McCain has stood on certain issues…He’s always been honest & forthright about where he stands…If it floats your boat to say that you support him only because he picked Sarah as his running-mate, then JUST STAY FOCUSED, FOR THE SAKE OF AMERICA’S FUTURE!
And if you acknowledge that at least he didn’t advocate the wrong kind of SCR in his ad, THEN DON’T BE READING ANYTHING NEGATIVE INTO IT — While you’re getting your rocks off by trying to undermine Mac’s support among people you’ve never even met, you yourselves are the ones trying to propagandize swing-state-voters into SWINGING THE WRONG WAY!
I’m socially conservative, too, BUT AMERICA’S FUTURE IS SO MUCH MORE AT STAKE IN THIS ELECTION, AS NEVER BEFORE! Bill O’Reilly painted a very frightening picture, a few weeks ago, of what COULD happen if Obama won — Israel attacks Iran because of Obama’s non/leadership, World War III thus breaks out in the Middle East, OIL BLASTS PAST $200/BARREL, & THE ECONOMY TRULY COLLAPSES!!!
ARE YOU “ONE-ISSUE VOTERS” WILLING TO RISK ALL THAT, JUST BECAUSE YOU STILL CAN’T GET OVER McCAIN BEING THE NOMINEE???
HOW PROUD RONALD REAGAN WOULD BE OF THIS IN-FIGHTING!

jessehammer Sunday, September 14th at 8:31PM EST (link)And don’t give me this cr@p about not voting for either one — A “conservative non-vote for Mac” might as well be a vote for Obama anyway, and we all know it. Such people are the ones “trying to lose”.

paint_it_red (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 8:37PM EST (link)Do you really want to be calling Christians nutjobs? Do you really want to drag out Schiavo and every other issue that matters to social conservatives, call them stupid and crazy just because you don’t agree with them?
If the social conservatives “get off” the train, then that train is not going to white house. Hate to go there, but there are a heck of a lot more social conservatives in our party base than libertarians. So yeah, if you want McCain in power, you’d miss us if we got off that train.
Truth is, all parts of our coalition are needed for victory. I don’t want McCain to piss off fiscal conservatives any more than social conservatives or any other segment of the base.

"Pandering" and more insults
paint_it_red (Diary) Sunday, September 14th at 8:51PM EST (link)You actually think social conservatives are getting everything they want? I know plenty of people who have left the GOP because the GOP was not standing up enough for Schiavo, or doing enough to ensure an end to abortion, or at least an end to Roe. Having been disillusioned and felt used too many times, they focused on other issues on which the Dems tend to have an advantage, (at least from a polling perspective).
That’s part of the reason Palin boosted McCain so much, some of those voters came back.
Don’t worry about playing “oh so nicely.” You don’t. Why don’t you discuss ideas, (on topic and not tangential complaints), and stop insulting people?
The SoCons are not the ones tarnishing the party brand. More than anything else, ethics scandals and an unpopular war in which we had a PR nightmare did that.

charliehall Sunday, September 14th at 9:02PM EST (link)of his position in favor of embryonic stem cell rsearch. I’m an Orthodox Jew. While our religion teaches against abortions for convenience, we are mostly big supporters of in vitro fertilization and of all kinds of medical research including embryonic stem cell research. This may help neutralize the hesitancy that many Jews have because of the link between Sarah Palin’s church and the leader of Jews for Jesus, and Patrick Buchanan’s insistence that she was a supporter of his.
