They gave us a gift today

I was furious at first, but the more I think about it, I realize that this isn’t all bad. Today was not a complete loss.

Because the vote passed by a tiny margin, we can credibly and accurately hold any Democrat accountable for the effects that it will have or the effects that the bill intends to have, even if nothing comes out of the senate on it.

For example:

Tom Perriello ran as a moderate Democrat and then voted for this bill.

On whatever day of the month that electricity bills go out in the district, let’s send a reminder to all voters that Congressman Perriello voted for the bill that will, in Obama’s own words, skyrocket electricity prices.

If for some reason the bill doesn’t come out of the senate, we’ll still send the reminder out, letting people know that if Perriello had his way, prices would have skyrocketed.

When gas shoots up to 4 dollars a gallon this fall, even if Cap and Trade hasn’t passed the senate yet, Perriello voted for the bill that would and will make things worse. Let’s put up signs around gas stations thanking Tom Perriello for raising the price of gasoline. I’m sure there are plenty of friendly station owners that wouldn’t mind.

When unemployment hits 10 percent, let’s remind the district that Tom Perriello voted for an explictly jobs-killing bill. The day it hits 10 percent we should have letters in every local newspaper, reminding people of the bill that Perriello voted for.

When a manufacturing plant shuts down of moves to China, let’s remind the district that the greenhouse gasses are still being produced, the only things gone are the American jobs. And remind them who made this possible.

Whenever Tom Perriello speaks about the economy, or promises to promote job creation, we’ll have a plant at his events asking him why he voted for a bill that will send millions of American jobs overseas. Ask him how he has the credibility to talk about creating jobs after he voted to destroy jobs.

That’s how I plan on using this against my representative. Do the same for yours.

Don’t let this passion run out or the issue die. If Clinton’s attempt to end DODA was overreaching, this is overreaching on steroids.

We took the time to make a phone call, now let’s take the time to write some letters to the editor. Keep this issue going.

My talking points will be:

1. This won’t stop any greenhouse gasses, it will just move them to China and Brazil.

2. This will move American jobs overseas.

3. In this economy, to send jobs overseas and hurt our economy with absolutely no benefits is insane.

4. Congressman Perriello ran as a moderate, but he’s voting as a far-left liberal.

They absolutely did. This was a victory for two reasons. The first reason you explained very eloquently. The second reason is because it shows the left we can organize and scare the living bejesus out of them. When this occurs again when health care comes up, these Democrats will be wetting their pants. This was just a shot across the bow, and yet the horrible bill just barely passed. They had only a couple of votes to spare.

This also shows us exactly who are the loyal Republicans and who the faux ones are.
Thanks for the post.

Prices will still skyrocket even without Cap & Trade

izoneguy (Diary) Saturday, June 27th at 5:52PM EST (link)

Obama and the nutroots refusal to allow oil drilling will be looked back as one of the biggest reasons this recession is so long & deep. Why do they refuse to allow oil drilling? Just as in the Cap & Trade debate they claim it is to stop global warming. And they use the argument that America has to wean itself off of oil. That will not happen for at least another 60 years. Destroying the economic engine that could provide R&D into solving our energy dependence on oil won’t help. Obama, Pelosi & Gore stand to make billions by letting their Green Energy friends cut in line. By touting the “Green Energy” economy they do so at the peril of America’s economic health.

The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

I'm a bit skeptical

If this is such a catastrophe with regard to rates for electrical use, I want to know why the electric companies are being silent and failing to inform their customers.

I called my own power company a couple weeks ago after hearing about cap and trade and its effects on electric bills, and I was assured that there was nothing planned that would significantly raise rates to the amounts I was reading.

Someone tell me if I am wrong, but I see no reason why they would either secretly support the thing or be silent about opposition.

We get a newsletter in our bill and for the last 6 months they have explained how these policies have already hurt our electric rates, by causing the cancellation of a planned power plant, and that it is going to cause severe trouble in the future.

Too bad other companies aren’t following suit.

The nature of the bill

briancobbs (Diary) Sunday, June 28th at 6:52PM EST (link)

means that prices have to skyrocket, otherwise it would have no effect on how much carbon consumers use. If the difference is marginal, then I’ll use marginally less carbon.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope this is the case, but from the Heritage Report, the costs will be quites substantial.

I’m not sure why we haven’t heard more from the power companies though – good question.

You don’t care, you don’t have to. You just raise the rates and that’s that.

Not only that, but the utilities aren't stupid. They can read the

tea leaves like everyone else. If they think this garbage is a fait accompli, they shift from opposition mode to suck up to the trough don’t piss anybody off mode (look at Duke Electric) What do you think the 300 page ammendment was all about – protecting the politically pliant from the astronomical costs of this bill.

One of the little-noted travesty about the 8 reprehensible Quislings was they blew for us the opportunity to slow down the jagernaut of the Obama legislative machine which might have encouraged Big Businesses to climb out of bed with the socialists in their attempt to curry favor with those who will hold their future in their hands and shift to opposition mode to legislation they know is harmful to them.

Thanks for nothing, Cap & Tra8ters.

Most utilities are government owned anyway.

Don’t expect to hear much from them on this and they’re always in suck up mode.

Up to a certain point that is true. But there are some large utilities

such as Duke, AEP, PG&E, etc. that are still owned by shareholders and traded on exchanges and those were the ones I was referring to as being in full-fledged suck-up mode right now. I’m loving the irony of The One playing the never-ending class warfare card while climbing in be w/big business as he sttempts to make them part of the state.

But for those utilities that are, indeed, already government-owned, you’re dead on. Why would they bite the hand that’s feeding them…i.e. themselves.

we are keeping a close eye on this bill and I will possibly dump my full stock in the company when I see what happens in the Senate.

You see the market works exactly as we have told them, watch the utilities market tank if the Senate shows signs of accepting the bill in the Senate

Well, it's a good thing that The One doesn't use the market

Not here

Menlo (Diary) Sunday, June 28th at 10:23PM EST (link)

In Texas, they have quite a bit of competition. We’re bombarded by ads all the time. Having once been a monopoly, I believe my power company (TXU) is among the state’s largest. I’m not sure who is running the operations there. It’s not like the old Phone Company (I knew I’d heard that slogan before).

I saw a 2007 article saying they supported cap and trade, but I don’t know if that was the same thing back then. They haven’t mentioned it since.

I will still try contacting someone else there to see what is going on. I’ll also see what their competitors are saying.

We shouldn't even have to target the guy

redstatebluestate123 (Diary) Sunday, June 28th at 7:02PM EST (link)

Perriello won by 0.227% in 2008. If we have to target someone who won by that little in 2010, we’re going to have a problem.

You *always* have to put in effort
