Note from Erick: Brian Walsh asked if I’d put this up as a response to Leon’s from this morning.
One of my responsibilities is to work to set the public record straight, particularly when I see yourself and others publishing items that are simply not accurate. This tends to happen when you don’t take the time to ever contact the subject you’re writing about.
Unfortunately, I note that this pattern continues here in your post above – you write, “the indisputable facts (which Walsh dances around, in typical comms shop style) are that the DeVore campaign has sent at least four communications to John Cornyn or his staff requesting a meeting with the Senator, all of which have been either ignored or rebuffed.”
The problem is that your statement is contradicted by a story in The Hill newspaper this morning which you can read here — And please note this sentence in particular – “DeVore’s campaign acknowledges that it didn’t formally request a meeting until last week.”
Unfortunately this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this.
In a RedState post on Monday – Despite Claiming Otherwise, the NRSC Endorses Carly Fiorina – this was written, “of course, what they did not tell CQ is that they really have no intention of doing that. Take Chuck DeVore for example. He has tried a half dozen times to meet with John Cornyn, but has been rebuffed each time. In fact, Cornyn said last week he would love to meet with DeVore, but failed to mention his staff has rebuffed every single offer to meet by the DeVore campaign.”
Yet, that statement was contradicted by Mr. DeVore himself in a recent interview with CNN – “But DeVore said he has not made any effort to meet with national Republican officials because he knows who the NRSC is supporting, and doesn’t want to provide them with “valuable intelligence that they would simply pass on to Carly Fiorina.“
I recognize, as you note in your post above, that blog posts will often by minimally sourced. I understand that and frankly enjoy the opportunity to work with bloggers because I believe it’s important to have a dialogue. But we’ll work to correct the record when posts such as yours are at odds with the public record and the facts — and when we see a campaign sending out information which they themselves know to be false.
To be clear, the NRSC has not made any endorsement in the California Senate race and has no intention of making an endorsement. We would welcome the opportunity to work with any individual or campaign who believes, as we do, that Barbara Boxer’s leadership has been disastrous for California and our country. And is interested, as we are, to devoting the necessary time and energy to electing new Republican leaders to the Senate next year. I appreciate the opportunity to set the record straight and the opportunity to have a frank and open dialogue.

RedBeard Thursday, December 17th at 2:37PM EST (link)No mention of Mr. Walsh’s very public insults directed at the DeVore camp, correctly pointed out on this blog as likely ammunition for the Boxer camp to use if DeVore is the opposition.
Odd, since this is perhaps the key point made in Leon’s blog post.

I will be bold and speak for the others at this website:
We feel a complete and total disconnect between us and the national campaign committees. We are a HUGE part of the active base of the party. Without us, you won’t win. Whatever you can do to bridge that gap will benefit us both.
A big part of that gap is that many party officials will drive by post. Redstate.com is nice and will put diaries at the request of those officials, but they never come back and respond to comments

If you represent the party and you ask for special treatment, could you please improve your writing skills. Your sentence structure reads as if you wrote hastily. That comes across, at least to me, as dismissive of this site, or worse, as indicative of poor communication skills. I hope you intended neither. I hope this was a momentary lapse and not representative of national party operatives.

Joshua Trevino (Diary) Thursday, December 17th at 3:05PM EST (link)Which is that Brian Walsh is no longer lying about the NRSC ever reaching out to Chuck DeVore, viz.:
http://twitter.com/jstrevino/status/6745114318
Interesting and sad to see the Walsh continues to dissemble on other topics. For example, that CNN piece he cites? No, Brian: “national Republican officials” is not the same thing as “NRSC Chairman Senator John Cornyn.” Chuck DeVore has no interest in meeting with you or your fellow staffers — but he has repeatedly attempted to establish communications with the Senator. Five times, by my count.
You keep trying to get mileage out of the contention that reaching out to the NRSC Chairman isn’t the same as reaching out to the NRSC. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: conservatives won’t be lulled by your insistence that they should believe you, and not their lying eyes.
We are but warriors for the working-day.
So, Mr. Walsh...

Chuck DeVore should be getting that meeting any day now. And the NRSC should be partnering with him for fund raising purposes just like they are with Fiorina, right?

archer52 Thursday, December 17th at 3:57PM EST (link)I realize this website is run by a lawyer, so I’ll try my best to limit my speech. Truth is one of the biggest reasons we are in the mess we are is because we allow lawyers into politics. They simply cannot, by and large, walk a straight line or give a straight answer. It is the way they are wired and a reason why they chose the profession they are in.
Here we see someone saying something and not really saying anything at all. He called, but not really, so we turned him down, but not really? That kind of an answer on the street would earn you a smack on the forehead.
Either they did or they didn’t- on both sides. Anything other answer is a lie, lawyer style.
Memo to the NRSC: More McClintocks, Less Schwarzeneggers
thurlowweed (Diary) Thursday, December 17th at 4:06PM EST (link)As a committed Whig as late as 1854, Abraham Lincoln was hesitant to become a Republican.
When it became apparent that the Whig Party was going the way of the dinosaur, and Lincoln made the switch. He was a Republican by early 1856, and the party’s nominee for Senator from Illinois in 1858.
I wonder if I’m not like old Abe, circa 1854. Maybe the the GOP, as evidenced by the NRSC, has just become too bloated, bureaucratic, and too unable or unwilling to respond to conservative supporters and their values, to be effective. Hopefully not. For now, I’m sticking with Republicans, but let’s hope the Whigs, er, I mean, GOP can keep (get?) it’s act together, and support some great conservative candidates.

Classic
In The Hook (Diary) Thursday, December 17th at 4:59PM EST (link)So you’ve got headshots and twitter links to Crist and McCain but nothing from Rubio or Hayworth. But hey, you’re not endorsing anyone, right?
Look, I get that we have to put up the most electable candidates. We all understand that here, Erick more than most. Hell, the guy is grudgingly accepting of Kirk and Castle, two Republicans far away from the base simply because he knows a real conservative isn’t going to win in IL or DE right now.
If you’re not going to take sides THEN STOP TAKING SIDES. The NRSC has blatantly endorsed Fiorna and Rubio in their respective races even if the word “endorse” hasn’t been used in Fiorna’s case. Stop thinking the candidates need to kowtow to your committee and start realizing that you need to be offering the same support to everyone. Let the primary voters choose the candidate for the general and then get behind him or her 100%. That’s all we’re asking. But you folks in DC think we’re too stupid to elect the “right” candidate.
Newsflash: When the GOP rose to power in ’94, it was because of a huge wave against both the Dems in power AND the handpicked Gingrich folks. Conservatives won the day, not the establishment, though Newt did a great job in taking credit for it. When the establishment micromanaged everything and the caucus moved both towards the left and towards total incompetence, the people threw us out.
But huzzah! Whereas the GOP from 2002-2006 was only fairly incompetence, we’ve now been succeeded with total incompetence and 24/7 amateur hour and the people know it. Stop trying to take credit for the coming wave and just roll with it. You’ll end the intraparty warfare and be sitting pretty come Nov. 2010 if you do things that way. Otherwise, we’re going to run you folks over anyway and you’ll be out of a job.

Brian Walsh is a liar.
hoosierteacher (Diary) Thursday, December 17th at 6:36PM EST (link)The same article that Walsh cites has this quote, “In response, the NRSC has offered to have DeVore meet with executive director Rob Jesmer. DeVore is holding out for a sit-down with Cornyn.” Walsh is lying by ommission, and is too cowardly to confront this in the comments section. No wonder so many of us believe in the mantra “Not one penny more” for the corrupt NRSC.
Mr. Walsh’s brand of politics is why I have been so absent from politics for several years. I was around years ago when RedState got started, and was active in local and state efforst. But then the republican party stopped caring about conservative principles. We became a party of spending and corruption almost as bad as the democrats. Only a strong position on national defense and counter-terrorism kept me voting, and President Bush’s excellent work on SCOTUS appointments. I’ll believe the party represents me when I see meaningful tax reform, a freeze or reduction in spending, a fight to the death for and against judges (and not just at the SCOTUS level), and an agressive stance against nations and groups that mean our country harm. So far, not being as bad as the democrats isn’t good enough.
I don’t even recognize my party anymore. The NRSC endorses idiots like Arlen in PA (who makes you look stupid when his true colors come out). The House version isn’t much better, as we can see from “Dede” choice in NY. Thank God RedState stopped her.
Now Brian and his ilk continue to LIE to us about endorsements. For example, Rubio in FL is even with Crist (Crist – who votes with the dems) and does better against the dem in polls, but the NRSC is still in bed with Crist. The situation in CA is just as bad (despite Mr Walsh’s lies by ommission).
But why should we be surprised? Are our republicans in the senate doing all they can to stop Obamacare, or are they adding amendments to make it easier to pass? So far, if Obamacare is sinking, we can thank moderate dems like Nelson or independents like Lieberman or even liberal nut cases like Howard Dean (who is calling for it to be scrapped).
In the last couple of cycles, the GOP has lost their base. Right now, the dems are losing respect, but the GOP isn’t taking advantage. Independents are interested in the GOP brand because they are disgusted by the dems, but not excited by the GOP. As for the conservative base, we’re more inspired by the Tea Party movement and Sarah Palin (who was spit on by the beltway, GOP insider elites).
If the GOP wants us back, they need to stop supporting dems who dress up like republicans over true believers. When our own NRSC keeps taking sides in primaries against conservatives, then can’t even have the nerve to come clean about it, don’t be suprised if we continue to be uninspired about our own party.
I’m mad as heck at the dems. But I’m more motivated to vote “for” someone than “against” someone. Obama and Pelosi don’t inspire me to go cast a generic vote against them. GIve me a real conservative to vote for, and make me feel this is a national movement (like in ’94). When I see my party spurning Devore and Crist (and others), it ceases to be my party.
Maybe those comments are strong, but they are how I feel. When will my party give me something better than RINOs to feel motivated about? Until they do, I have more important things to worry about, like my family and job. I won’t waste my time or money on a party that only pays lip service to my conservative beliefs. In fact, this founder of both a CR and YR group would rather be called an independent than a republican. Do something about it Mr, Walsh.

The NRSC and in some instances Mr Boehner are trying to lead, but should perhaps opt for #2 or #3. Democratic businessmen slapping an “R” on?
Walsh et al deciding who is more ‘electable’? Sorry for my naivete, but isn’t that our job as the electorate? Yes, one does not back every flake in town, but Devore and Fiorina, like Rubio and Crist are at a minimum both pairs that deserve equivalent attention or equivalent noninterference.
NRSC is, I believe concerned about becoming external to the process. They should be. Beacuse they are.
