Congressman Eric Massa (D-NY) gave us a glimpse into the inner workings of the House Democrat Caucus. Massa voted against ObamaCare when it came up in the House last year. He alleged on a New York radio station that he is being forced out of Congress because of his stance on ObamaCare. Aside from the validity of the allegations against him, Massa gives us a glimpse into a fight within the Democrat Caucus on the political viability of the President’s health care reform proposal. Massa shows us that there are some Democrats pleading with Speaker Pelosi (D-Ca) to back away from ObamaCare.
According to Politico:
Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) says the House ethics committee is investigating him for inappropriate comments he made to a male staffer on New Year’s Eve — and that he’s the victim of a power play by Democratic leaders who want him out of Congress because he’s a “no” vote on health care reform.
If this is true and Democrat Leaders are forcing Massa out of Congress to help pass ObamaCare, this something that should be investigated by the House Ethics Committee. When did Democrat Leadership know about the allegations against Massa? Was the timing of the disclosure of the allegations part of a plan to help pass ObamaCare? Massa claims that the Democrat Leadership will “stop at nothing” to get what they want. More Politico:
And this administration and this House leadership have said, quote-unquote, they will stop at nothing to pass this health care bill.
Were they willing to force a member out of Congress to pass ObamaCare? Much of this story came from a radio broadcast of Massa on WKPQ (TH to Brietbart.tv). Massa claims that one pressure point that Dems used was to have union leaders threaten him to vote for ObamaCare or get no union money.
I have had union leaders tell me point blank we are not going to contribute to your campaign unless you vote for this health care bill. Is that or is that not a bribe?
I don’t know. It seems unethical. The promise of campaign contributions for a vote for health care may be considered a quid pro quo bribe under current law. A bigger question is whether this threat was made at the behest of Members of Congress or Obama Administration officials. Massa alleges that Democrats have lost their way. They railed against Republicans for using strong arm tactics to pass bills, like the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit, yet now they are engaging in unethical behavior to pass health care reform.
The leadership of the Democratic party have become exactly what they said they were running against they have become exactly what we all ran against.
This anger and rage is coming from an elected member of the Democrat party. This is a member that attended closed door meetings with leaders. One of the points Massa made is that Democrats are ignoring Republican claims that the American people do not like ObamaCare and have repeatedly rejected it.
You can not effectively govern this country without the consent of governed. The entire nation has said let’s rewrite the health care bill. Let’s find what we can agree upon. No. No. No. We are going to ram this down the throats of the American people.
Consent of the governed is an important concept and the Democrats have ignored the polls calling for Congress to start over and people of Massachusetts who sent Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) to the Capitol to kill ObamaCare. Massa, a Democrat, was a voice in the caucus saying to rewrite the bill and listen to the American people.
The American people have lost faith in this piece of legislation and if we pass this bill using reconciliation it will tear this country to pieces. It will rip this country asunder. And I have made this argument over and over and over and over again with House Leadership.
And the House leadership ignored him and others saying that reconciliation, the Health Care Nuclear Option, will destroy our nation politically. The people will be very angry and our populace will become more polarized.
I have said we are supposed to be as democrats the party of unity. We are supposed to be the party that builds consensus. We are supposed be the part that governs equally without malice towards anyone. We are supposed to be the ones that find the solutions.
The promise — the covenant Democrat leadership had with the American people has been broken. They have not been the party of unity, nor the party of consensus, nor the party that governs without malice, nor the ones that find solutions. They have been the party of a faction that ignores broad based solutions in favor of using strong arm tactics to force through a left wing approach to health care reform.
But instead of actually trying finding the solutions and writing a piece of legislation that will get you a 90 percent solution with 70 percent agreement among the American people. They are going to ram this bill down the throats of this country and it is going to rip this nation to pieces politically and it will be a generation for this nation to recover.
These are strong words from Congressman Massa, but, his words give us some evidence that elements of the Democrat party are pleading for ObamaCare to be shelved. One may be skeptical of his claims of innocence, yet still give credence to his strong claims of unethical behavior on the part of Dem Leadership. ObamaCare is taking on some water and the bill may yet stink because of the dangerous tactics Dems have used to railroad the bill through Congress against the will of the American people.

The question remains--
Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 9:20PM EST (link)If Massa is so incensed about this, why doesn’t he stay in Congress until the vote? They CAN’T throw him out. Yet he’s resigning and allowing them to perhaps pass the bill in his absence.
Does Rahm Emanuel have something worth this much on Massa?
Are Massa’s transgressions in Congress such that he can’t stand to have an investigation even started for a couiple of weeks?
Why is he quitting? Why? (For all you folks who thought it was a terrible scandal when Sarah Palin resigned as Governor, this is a resignation which really matters.)

Choice: Massa future or America's future
popdaddy Monday, March 8th at 9:46PM EST (link)I understand Massa has some legitimate health issues and obviously, he has been attacked by the evil leadership of the socialist democrat party that controls his future. The guy made a choice to run with his congressional pension and CongressCare privileges for life.
The option to stand and fight for ideas and American values risk of being stripped of said privileges and facing a bleak healthcare future under Obamacare like the rest of the public.
God help those who cannot and damn those who will not fight Socialism overtaking America.
I believe that puts Massa in the "will not" category.
Flagstaff (Diary) Monday, March 8th at 9:57PM EST (link)But for heaven’s sake, it took them about four years to investigate William Jefferson, and they caught him with bribe money sticking out of his shirt collar. Massa should have held on for a couple weeks to vote NO. Obviously, he decided it was best for him to get out now. The question still remains, “Why?”
That is, I want some details.
What was(were) his transgression(s)? More than he said? What would come out?
More tomorrow on Beck. Maybe.

Answers this afternoon???
scubadiver49er Tuesday, March 9th at 9:06AM EST (link)Massa is going to be live with Glenn Beck on TV today. Hopefully we’ll find out some answers. I for one thought that if he wanted to vote “No” again on this “Obamination” he should have hunkered down, waited for the vote and THEN resign if he felt so compelled to do so. Hopefully we’ll know more this afternoon.

Massa details instances where he may have went out of bound
tngal (Diary) Tuesday, March 9th at 8:35AM EST (link)On Rollcall. com this morning there is an article where Messa highlights a couple of times where he used the salty language. Here’s one quote…
“I said something that was out of bounds. I said, ‘I had to go lick lollipops to raise money.’ Now you can use your imagination to know what I actually said,” Massa recalled. “It was inappropriate. ”
And another portion of a different graph.. ThIs was in reference to a weddling.
“……a staff member made an intimation to me that maybe I should be chasing after the bridesmaid, and his points were clear and his words were far more colorful than that,” Massa said. “And I grabbed the staff member sitting next to me and said, ‘Well, what I really ought to be doing is fracking you.’ And then [I] tousled the guy’s hair and left, went to my room, because I knew the party was getting to a point where it wasn’t right for me to be there. Now was that inappropriate of me? Absolutely. Am I guilty? Yes.”

My assessment of the guy is that he is sincere. If he wanted to sell out, he would have gotten a good price from Pelosi who would have preferred not to have the Stupak language in the House bill.
Stupak sincerely wants the House Bill, but I don’t think he will deviate from his Stupak language stance.

The Left hates federalism because they won’t be able to steal the tax dollars of Red states nor force us into their socialist programs. If this passes and Obama signs it we must take the fight to the states. This legislation is unconstitutional and it must be fought on those grounds. Several states, most recently VA, have passed or will pass 10th Amendment legislation to nullify Obamacare. The Left will tear this country apart because conservatives will not live under a socialist state. Without conservatives and red state participation, Obamacare collapses.

I think there isn't yet enough information
merryj1 Tuesday, March 9th at 3:50AM EST (link)Massa is clearly under pressure, but I doubt if any of us know exactly what that pressure is. The remarks he reportedly made at the wedding dinner were coarse and vulgar, but if “messing (the staffer’s) hair” was his only physical contact, I can’t see a ‘sexual harassment’ charge sticking (unless there was a cumulative impact or prior history).
But he did say, in effect, “they can get someone to say anything…” which implies a threat of some other, false but serious, allegation, that he’s unable to disprove, or possibly a threat of public disclosure or allegation about a family member.
The point is, we don’t have a clear picture of why he’s taking a walk; he must have a reason, and it doesn’t necessarily mean he’s actually guilty of anything lurid. If it is a flat-out extortion, I hope his appearance on Beck tomorrow exposes the Administration’s entire parade of horribles. What a fine bunch of thoroughbreds!

Kucinich was on Countdown, sans Obermann and with O’Donnell tonight, and the guy appears dead set against the deal. That raised his status in my mind.

Break out the KY jelly, because we are going to get Obamacare rammed up our collective behinds. everyone’s health care is paid for or the hospitals would have to close their doors!
teridavisnewman (Diary) Tuesday, March 9th at 7:34AM EST (link)We all know that the Obama administration is trying to ram government health care down our throats and is planning to use the rate increases applied for by Blue Cross/Anthem in California to justify their position that government control is needed. This is untrue for several reasons, but the rate increase asked for in California is largely due to having to shift the cost of health care for illegal immigrants to people who DO have insurance.
Very few people have an understanding of how insurance companies work. Theoretically there are “uninsured” people in the USA, but in actuality, everyone’s health care is paid for or the hospitals would have to close their doors! The very poor have Medicaid which is the government health insurance and the illegal aliens use it by having an anchor baby who is a US citizen at birth. The baby is then used to qualify for welfare benefits and Medicaid and it is automatically granted to underage US citizens. The illegal aliens along with those who choose not to buy health insurance are covered by what is known as “cost shifting”.
Cost shifting is the process by which hospital bill the insurance of covered people for the cost of their care AND THE CARE OF THE UNINSURED. Do you really think that two aspirin cost the hospital $30 to provide? Of course not!! The $30 pays for the aspirin and the care of the uninsured. The hospitals shift the cost of the care of the uninsured onto the bills of those of us who DO have insurance—if they didn’t do this, they would have to close their doors since they are legally required to provide care for any sick person or emergency. NO ONE in America is denied health care because of inability to pay because they either have Medicaid, health insurance or the cost of the care is shifted to the insured. It’s been going on forever and worst of all, the illegal aliens know that they cannot be denied care in an EMERGENCY ROOM so they use ERs as their primary physician which is horrendously expensive. Hospitals routinely deny that they are shifting the cost to the insured people, but they are. Just from a business standpoint, they MUST in order to remain open and provide care—and Medicaid is also billed through cost shifting.
To bring down costs, we need to change the incentives that govern spending:
* Right now, $5 out of every $6 of health-care spending is paid for by someone other than the person receiving care — insurance companies, employers, or the government.
* Individuals are insulated from the reality of what their decisions cost.
* This breeds overutilization of low-value health care and runaway spending.
To reduce the growth of costs, individuals must take greater responsibility for their health care, and health insurers and health care providers must face the competitive forces of the market. Three policy changes will go a long way to achieving these objectives:
* Eliminate the tax code’s bias that favors health insurance over out-of-pocket spending.
* Remove state-government barriers to purchasing and providing health services.
* Reform medical malpractice laws.
I intend to drop a bill in the hopper immediately after being sworn in that will repeal Obama-care if it should manage to become law before the election. It will be my very first act as your Representative and then I will work towards a sensible set of insurance reforms.

Good job Teri. Is this your "standard" stump speech

Can you expand on your plan to eliminate the tax code bias? What exactly does that mean? Are you going to suggest the same tax benefit for individuals buying insurance or are you going to suggest doing away with tax benefits for companies that provide it?
I understand and agree with the other 2 points (assuming removing state barriers means allowing insurance to be purchased interstate).

bamron Tuesday, March 9th at 7:50AM EST (link)He is leaving because whatever thugs dug up this bit of gossip on him probably are holding a lot more dirty secrets. The Chicago Mob just doin’ its thing. That should send a message loud and clear to the other doubters to “get outta the way or get out.” The essential sleaziness of this gang of political gorillas is getting clearer every day.
If Massa did the crime, he should go. (Even if I have never known a Dem to turn against one of their own, no matter how corrupt or immoral, unless that person was a thorn in their side. The Dems don’t even believe in the concept of morality with regard to human behavior.) He is a gutsy guy for giving it to them, in spades, before he left.
A few years back, when the GOP held the Senate and the Dems were blocking judicial nominees at all levels, the Republicans thought long and hard about using the “nuclear option.” They decided not to do so. At the time a friend of mine was rooting for the 51-49 gambit and I warned her that it would be a grave mistake. We won’t be in power forever, and if we use it, then the Dems will use it. We won’t like it then.
The Republicans had the sense to back off, but these left-wing Fringe-ers who are now occupying the summits of power don’t have any common sense. They are so full of themselves, of their superior vision and selflessness, always pontificating and posing. The Poser in Chief wants to say he passed health care and he doesn’t care about the results. Because Massa is right — the use of the nuclear option will lead to enormous political instability in this country. I can see a nationwide movement to repeal this act of treachery, by 51 votes if necessary. So the pendulum will swing every wider.
