Border Patrol Hits This All Time Record, Proving the Humanitarian Crisis Is Real

The crisis at the border that many on the left call a “manufactured crisis” has hit a very sad number today.

According to the Daily Caller, the most recent U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) report that border agents apprehended 27,518 members of “family units” in the month of December.

This is the highest monthly total on record, according to the Daily Caller, who went into further detail:

The number of family members arrested at the U.S. southern border has increased over the past five months, and have ticked up significantly from years prior. CBP averaged 31,188 family units and unaccompanied alien children apprehensions each month in fiscal year 2019 — a 136 percent increase from the 13,210 average monthly apprehensions in fiscal year 2017.

Family units make up a smaller fraction of overall border apprehensions. U.S. authorities detained 60,782 migrants in December who tried entering the country illegally. It was the third month in a row that migrant arrests surpassed 60,000 — some of the highest levels during President Donald Trump’s tenure.

This may have quite a bit to do with the migrant caravan which made its way from Honduras with thousands of migrants contained within. Many are currently camped out in Tijuana awaiting entry into the United States. Tijuana has reported that this has majorly increased crime, costing the Mexican city half a million dollars a day.

At this time, Republicans and Democrats are locked in a battle over $5 billion worth of funding for the wall. With Democrats refusing to give in to Trump’s demands and Republicans refusing to budge if Democrats continue to play political games, the government shutdown that has resulted has no end in sight.

A recent Associated Press poll showed that both sides of the aisle increasingly care about immigration. This is likely to fuel the stubbornness on both sides. With Republicans having a lot to gain in terms of momentum going into 2020 if they succeed, it doesn’t look like they’re going to back down. As Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has stated, however, if Trump fails to build the wall it would likely be the end of his presidency, and the Republicans will suffer greatly come election time.
