Nancy Pelosi Overwhelmingly Nominated for Speaker by Democrats, but Is Trump the True Winner?

Despite some Democrats best attempts to keep her away from power, it seems Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will be reassuming her position as Speaker of the House thanks to huge support from Democrats.

According to The Hill, Democrats overwhelmingly nominated Nancy Pelosi for her position as Democratic leader, a position she’s held since 2003, however, the fight isn’t over for the Democrat rebels:

The much higher bar will come in the first week of January, when the full House meets to choose the Speaker in a public vote requiring a majority of the entire voting chamber. It’s there that the insurgents feel they can block Pelosi’s ascension, even as Pelosi and her allies have projected nothing but confidence that she’ll retake the gavel she lost following the red wave elections of 2010.

Pelosi’s opposition attempted to meet with her in order “to engage her in a reasonable conversation about leadership transition,” but according to Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.), “our concerns were dismissed outright.”

While this is somewhat of a bad day for these Democrats, the only other person who will likely win in the event of Pelosi regaining the gavel is none other than President Donald Trump, who has supported Pelosi in her bid for Speaker since Democrats won back the House.

“I can get Nancy Pelosi as many votes as she wants in order for her to Speaker of the House,” tweeted Trump earlier this month. “She deserves this victory, she has earned it – but there are those in her party who are trying to take it away.”

Why is Pelosi so important to Trump?

For one, it might be that Trump is trying to shore up favor with Pelosi in order to grease bi-partisan wheels. However, Trump has stated in the past that he wants to keep Pelosi around as long as possible because, as he once also noted, he considers her such a horrid leader that it sends Democrats into bouts of infighting.

“She’s our secret weapon. I just hope they [the Democrats] don’t change her. She’s really out there. And I’m supposed to make a deal with her?” said Trump in February.

It is true that Pelosi causes strife within her own party thanks to poor decision making and public stunts that benefit her and her alone. This has caused some Democrats to speak out against her, and wish she would step down from any leadership position.
