Gary Johnson is known for running a pretty clean campaign, but it doesn’t stop him from landing a few blows from time to time. You’ll recall not long ago that Johnson called Trump a “pussy” in an attempt to start a battle of machismo.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Friday night, during the Olympic opening ceremonies, Johnson and Weld were holding a Q&A with a crowd of about 500. The topics covered ranged from de-scheduling marijuana, to attracting the former Bernie vote, to his thoughts about Trump and Clinton.
Johnson said to the crowd he wants to be the alternative to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, whom he called “the two most polarizing figures in American politics today,” echoing statements he made in the RGJ interview. He and Weld were the fiscally conservative, socially liberal alternative, he said.
“If Clinton is elected or if Trump is going to get elected, I think the polarization in Congress will be greater than ever,” Johnson said Friday in the RGJ interview before he spoke at UNR. “Nothing is going to get done. it is going to be so ugly, so partisan, so back-biting. Well what if you elect a couple of Libertarians?”
It was during his discussion of the other candidates that Johnson worked in a blow directed right at Trump.
“I hear that Donald Trump is watching the Olympics tonight. He’s seeing how high the Mexican pole vaulters go,” he said, poking fun at Trump’s border wall idea.
Trump has, on multiple occasions, made disparaging remarks about Mexicans, often referring to the people coming here illegally as murderers, rapists, etc. Even making nasty remarks revolving around people’s hispanic origin such as the judge in the Trump University case, and Jeb Bush’s wife, neither of whom are remotely illegal.
So, needless to say, Gary’s zinger against Trump deserves a gold medal.
