Let’s be brutally honest. Barack Obama is going to win the presidential election, and probably by a lot. We’ll avoid recriminations and “I told you so”s and second guessing here. Let’s just face the reality. Obama is trading at 84 on in-trade. Overnight quickie polls show the public overwhelmingly thinks Obama won last night’s debate – which probably has less to do with any “objective” scoring and more to do with the fact that folks have simply decided to vote for Obama. Obama has more cash than McCain and independent groups are spending more in his support than they are in favor of McCain. Obama’s national lead is in double digits in many polls, and per Real Clear Politics, Obama leads in every – that’s EVERY, as in all – battleground states. His leads in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, even Colorado, Virginia, and Florida, are all outside the margin of error.
So Barack Obama is the next president of the United States, and the Democrats will gain seats in the House and the Senate. At this point, it is imperative that the Republicans maintain a filibuster-capable Senate minority. The Democrats now have about a one in three chance of picking up the 60 or more Senate seats they would need to prevent filibusters.
It is not quite right to say that every nickle spent by the Republican National Committee in support of Senator McCain is a waste, because McCain’s performance will still help downticket races. But the RNC – and individual donors – need to concentrate remaining resources not on Senator McCain’s race for president, but on shoring up endangered Senate Republicans. We need to help Norm Coleman in Minnesota, Elizabeth Dole in North Carolina, Roger Wicker in Mississippi. Even Saxby Chambliss in Georgia and Mitch McConnell in potentially in danger, and Chuck Schumer is pouring money into Kentucky to try to take down the Minority Leader. It may be too late to help John Sununu in New Hampshire, Gordon Smith in Oregon, or Bob Schaeffer in Colorado, but they’re all in much better position than the McCain campaign. It’s even worth trying to save Ted Stevens in Alaska – we’re going to need every vote. 41 Senate seats will be the only meaningful check on Pelosi, Reid, and Obama for the next four years.
I know it’s tough for people to give up on the presidential. But there is a point at which you have to seriously look at the evidence, and save what can still be saved. The RNC needs to shift its focus to the Senate, and the McCain campaign should likewise shift its focus to those states where a stronger McCain effort can help some of these endangered Republicans keep their seats.

As for me, I’m commiting to continuing my support of McCain Palin. I’m changing my tactics and altering how I spend my money, but I’m not about to give up.
Lastly, I have commited to spending an hour in prayer each day for this election. I suggest others do the same. We had divine intervention in 2000, we can have it again.

“REDSTATE PROCLAIMS ELECTION LOST FOR MCCAIN!!!” because it will be RedState – and not Brad Smith – that any commentators will mention.
To the extent that we (collectively at RS)have any influence in the political process, you may have just helped increase any margin of defeat even down the ticket.
Demoralizing those who may have been willing to go out and fight by proclaiming the battle lost is…not helpful.
Is this really what we need to see on the front page?

Not to say its worth giving up the Presidency...
Mr_Green Thursday, October 16th at 8:59AM EST (link)But at what point do you shift focus from the Presidency to the Senate? Where is that line? If resources do indeed need to go to Senators to prevent a filibuster proof majority and they instead go to a failed Presidency bid where does that leave everyone?
Prayer, amazing thing that prayer stuff.
wennejunk (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 9:01AM EST (link)Firstly – that is a wonderful idea. Thanks for saying it and suggesting it.

So many see prayer as an act of desperation and for most, perhaps, it is an infrequent desperate act.
I see it as the single most important act that believers can do to impact events and have been meaning to put up a commentary on prayer and the election.

PaRep,
pwest (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 9:03AM EST (link)I read the article; great stuff. I said by looking at the numbers in the polls that I could see McCain has been losing Republican support because he hasn’t been fighting like Palin; last night, Mc
Cain stood up for the base; he rallied the troops.
I expect his numbers from the base will improve; heck even Michelle Malkin moved a little toward McCain and you know she does not like him at all.
I bet the debate numbers are down again; I could be wrong; I’ll wait until Drudge posts them later. If they are, then only the diehards, us, our base and Obamas, and maybe some undecideds watched. The sound bites of McCain hitting Obama on Joe the Plummer; standing up for the good folks at his rallies, Senator Government, and the Infants Born Alive Act, will be played all day on Rush, Hannity, Levin, all the local stations.
If Conservatives, Republicans and Libertarians, come home and turn out as they did in 04, McCain will win.

Give up?
Conservative101 Thursday, October 16th at 9:03AM EST (link)Give up? With the race 3 in gallup, 4 in rasmussen and 3.6 in zogby? Are you kidding me? You NEVER give up. When I was on my 6th grade basketball team, our opponents had a steal and breakaway. I was the closest to the opposing player racing down the court. I was 2 steps behind him. I stopped at the top of the key and he made his layup. My coach called timeout and BENCHED me. It was a great lesson to learn. If I had kept going he may have missed. You NEVER give up. I never gave up again in that type of situation and a number of breakaway layups were missed thanks to me and my teammates NEVER GIVING UP. McCain can win this yet. I know a higher up at the RNC and he tells me there is RECORD GOP turnout in all the states with early voting. I’m very encouraged. Giving up now with a quarter left in the game is borderline TREASONESS. Go McCain/Palin.

July into early August was the high point of McCain’s campaign, with the announcement of Sarah Palin as his running mate being the pinnacle.
I will still be voting for Sarah Palin. I really want her to win. I continue to think that McCain is Bob Dole II.
If we can somehow keep the Democrats from getting a super-majority in both houses I will consider that a moral victory for our party. We do need to focus all our efforts on that goal.
The prospect of Obama, Pelosi and Reid being able to railroad their liberal agenda into law, without opposition, is truly frightening.

Marcus_Traianus (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 9:23AM EST (link)Is this intended to illicit some type of controversial response and site traffic? DKOS links and pieces saying we have given up? Perhaps get Erick another guest appearance on Fox and talk about why we are surrendering and discuss the fundamental, underlying reasons? Oh, I get it, reverse psychology, rally the troops and get people angry (like we are not already). Wait, where is the disclaimer “this does not represent the opinion of directors, et al”.
I have very principled differences with Mr. McCain on some issues. That aside, I won’t surrender the bounty of liberty so threatened by the opposition candidate. That means supporting McCain to the bitter end, something repeatedly advocated at RS. Now that you have divined an end to this race, we are supposed to accept such contra intellectual opines (oh, the polls, woe is me!). I can think of nothing which removes more credibility from any director of this community.
I don’t advocate thought control or suppression of independent thought. However, if I have garnered anything from the wealth of electoral information and historical perspective available it is that while currently a very challenging environment for McCain, this is far from over. I would rather die with the warriors than weep with the widows.

One fears most the ignorance of the people; the other, the selfishness of rulers independent of them. Which is right, time and experience will prove.”.Thomas Jefferson

Gee, Brad, let's see.....
eburke (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 10:40AM EST (link)Last week I penned a series of 3 emails to my entire address book of politically active and non-politically active names delineating His Holiness’s connection to the Fannie Mae mess using the YouTube videos as it’s basis.
Yesterday, I made another round of $100 donations (despite my very modest middle class status) to races in which we can make a difference (this time Brian Davis challenging 1st termer Steve Walz in my district, MN-1, a district which was in Republican hands for over 30 years,) Mitch McConnell, Tom Rooney and Pete Olson)
This week the ‘job’ is to begin penning a missive which will be sent to all of my economically illiterate but ardently pro-life friends detailing Obama’s to-the-left of Hillary Clinton pro-abortion/pro-infanticide positions.
So, what have you done recently other than throw in the towel and add RS contributor chits to the Eeyore Syndrome at a time when Ras has McCain down to -4 with only a 42-40 lead for BHO among ‘core’ supporters with 18% not firmly committed, and McCain had by far his best debate performance.

Brad- I'm a realist too,
oldmom Thursday, October 16th at 10:46AM EST (link)however using those particular words ‘The presidential race is over’ in the title seems more like rubbing salt into our wounds than perhaps a dose of ‘tough love’ realism.
Many are NOT ready to give up the race. With the race only 19 days away, that may seem real close, but we all know a LOT can happen in that short time.
I think the issue of Joe the Plumber may be a game changer. Am I being silly? Maybe, but can’t we wait a few days to see how and if the narrative changes
before we throw in the towel?
McCain DID do what the base voters wanted him to do- he took the fight to Obama. Maybe the snap polls show well for Obama now, but jeeze, the mood of the country CAN change QUICKLY, but not as fast as those darn immediate polls. So lets give it a few days-I think the numbers are going to tighten up significantly!
I do agree that the down ticket races need much more attention-
donating $, phonebanking and canvassing for these candidates WILL make the difference. I hope the 527′s and the RNC open up their wallets and fight for the Senate and House races.
I ♥ Oregon.

(hmmm… sound familiar?)
Then they decided to coast and not campaign much in swing states over the last 72 hours, Bush’s DWI thing came out over the weekend, and we got within 500 votes of a Gore presidency.

Why BO will win
hnordquist_ Thursday, October 16th at 5:49PM EST (link)I have an idea. It is one that Obama supporters understood a long time ago. Instead of praying for divine intervention or writing a check, go out and work.
I made my first donation to the BO campaign in February, long before he was a contender. Since July, our neighborhood team has been assembled. We call, we canvass, we register voters.
I read both left and right leaning blogs, and all I hear on this side is grumbling. Nonsense is thrown around about Ayers, muslimism and ACORN. Meanwhile, the local McCain/Palin offices in my swing state of NM sit empty. I drive by and there is one lone woman sitting there. Later on, it is completely empty.
10 minutes later, in the tiny Obama office in a highly republican county in NM, there are droves of volunteers.
The liberals have finally found someone to believe in, and they are working to make it happen, instead of complaining to each other about how unfair the world is.
Go ahead, write a check. Say a prayer. Curse the conservative blogger here that says the race is doomed. It doesn’t matter this time, because the hard work on the other side has been in progress for some time.
I go to the BO office every Friday. I cannot remember a Friday afternoon since July in our town of 10,000 that there were fewer than 10 volunteers and staffers working there.
At this point, you need far more than a prayer.

izoneguy (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 6:43PM EST (link)The point cannot be made often enough: Modern liberalism, as embodied in the Obama presidency, is the defender of the status quo. And the status quo is a road to economic ruin. Political forces cannot redistribute the wealth that the economic system does not produce.

You know hnordquist, I'd normally ignore you;
Uma Richie (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 7:05PM EST (link)however, you mocked C17wife who is probably asleep right now.
Do you know why she is asleep? Because she is a few time zones ahead of us in Germany being both mother and father to her kids while her husband is in harm’s way.
Have fun at the Obama office tomorrow, but get off your high horse. Be thankful that C17wife and a whole lot of other McCain supporters are sacrificing to defend your right to support Obama.
Most disgusting piece of tripe I have ever read on Redstate.....and I thought the leftists were bad!
JadedByPolitics (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 7:44PM EST (link)Thanks for nothing…BUT WE conservatives will manage without you and when we come back here on Nov 5th we will throw this diary in your face…..I guess you woke up this morning and thought how can I stay relevent if the Messiah gets elected and this is how you thought that would occur and yet just like the other idiots (intelligensia) you and they will be irrelevent in conservative politics after Nov 5th…..congrats!

Heather, if you'd like to keep commenting here...
Moe Lane (Diary) Thursday, October 16th at 7:47PM EST (link)…lose the attitude. It’s unbecoming of an Obama staffer to be quite this mocking of a serviceman’s wife. I’ve read your website by now, so don’t presume to lie or get out of it. Simply say “Yes, Moe” and behave like a functional adult in the future.
Moe

I was going just read leave, until I read your
ted5_4 Thursday, October 16th at 8:11PM EST (link)comment. You and other republicans and democrats for that matter have no bragging rights to military service. It is something that us soldiers do for our country on behave of all US citizens. I’m in harms way just as much as c17wife’s husband. So throwing military service into someone’s face in an attempt to silence only show up the weakness of your argument. It does not endear you to military members, because we all don’t think like you. We’re not a monolith as you would like to assume.
My prayers are with c17wife and her husband. Your words won’t invalidate the beliefs of other soldiers and their families, like myself who disagree with Bush and Iraq, and are going through the same angst as c17wife. When it comes down to it we are all soldiers in the fight. It would serve you to find a better talking point and not hide behind c17wife’s dress as cover for your weaknesses. Stand on your own.
If you didn’t know, there are a lot of Obama supporters in the military. More than I myself thought there would be. So don’t think you have a monopoly on military service. Because you don’t.
You signed up 29 minutes to post that right?

ted5_4 -- He mocked a woman for not
Uma Richie (Diary) Friday, October 17th at 2:47AM EST (link)volunteering for her candidate, but for praying instead. I chastised him. If he mocked someone that I knew to be in blogging from a nursing home, I would have done the same thing.
And yes, I know that Republicans don’t have a monopoly on nursing home residents.
Who's rude?
hnordquist_ Friday, October 17th at 7:56AM EST (link)I am not a staffer. I was simply stating the fact that regular people have been out working this, and I see no ground game. The key to winning is turn out. We take nothing for granted here. We will work every day until the election. All the complaining and mudslinging is ridiculous. Unlike regular posters here, I have not called anyone names. Unbecoming?
Hahahaha You're not a staffer Heather??
PaRep (Diary) Friday, October 17th at 7:59AM EST (link)you said WE take nothing for Granted HERE
Don’t mess with Moe he is the Mod & knows a lot about you believe me
I mocked no one
hnordquist_ Friday, October 17th at 8:02AM EST (link)I wasn’t mocking, and I never pretended to be something that I wasn’t. My point was only that instead of the constant whining going on here, you could actually be trying to change something. That entails work. If I saw a McCain office packed with people or out in my neighborhood working, I would not have this to say.
I am also a public servant. I work for the Dept. of Energy in the field of Nuclear Safeguards and Nonproliferation, so it also occurs to me that you all may not have ownership of patriotism.
I don’t ask for any awards or pats on the back for my work, and I certainly don’t need a lecture about loving my country from you.
Distortion
hnordquist_ Friday, October 17th at 8:34AM EST (link)I have nothing derogatory to say about Moe, or the rest of you. I don’t really care what you know about me. I am telling you something that is true and real. It is about the enthusiasm gap between the two campaigns. I have knowledge of this because I live in a state with 5 highly-contested electoral votes.
I have not called anyone names. I have not put you down for your views. Mine obviously differ.
If you believe in your cause, you will turn people out for the election. Period. What in that rhetoric is rude or unfair?
Moe, I am sure you are a nice guy. I have nothing bad to say about any of you.
didn't say anything bad about you either
PaRep (Diary) Friday, October 17th at 8:41AM EST (link)I’m telling you don’t mess with Moe, Friendly advice not trying to scare you, I’am a Mod on another board & as a Mod you have some cute little tools to use that the regular posters don’t have
