Newsweek HOT Take: You Know Tucker Carlson Would Be Arrested in the UK, Right?

The Tucker Carlson controversy has started to die down somewhat (likely because of this) but Newsweek wanted to make sure they got the most nuclear hot take in before it does.

The short of it is that Carlson made some objectionable comments on a shock jock program over a decade ago. This has led CNN, MSNBC, the broadcast networks, and liberal newspapers everywhere to treat it like it’s the biggest story of the year and shill for his firing. In reality, it’s all just a transparent attempt to damage Fox News, which is why they went largely dark the moment Media Matters President Angelo Carusone was caught saying offensive things of his own.

Here’s Newsweek’s latest entry into the saga (per Townhall).

Fox News personality Tucker Carlson has faced growing calls to resign after racist and sexist comments he made on a radio show several years ago were brought to light by Media Matters. However, Canadian and British legal experts have told Newsweek that if Carlson were based in their countries, he could lose more than his job, with national hate speech laws meaning the host’s comments could constitute a chargeable offense…

…”Some of his words aren’t very flattering about people, they are not complimentary, but they are not criminal offenses,” Caulfield said. However, other comments, such as Carlson’s statement about Iraq, do “meet the threshold” for being considered “abusive” behavior under Section 5 of the Public Order Act of 1986, which makes it an offense to use “threatening, abusive or insulting words or behavior, or disorderly behavior.”

Luckily, Tucker doesn’t live in such a regressive society I guess? I don’t think Newsweek is making the point they they think they are making because all I’m taking away from this is that I’m glad I live in a free country. The entire piece reads like wish casting that Newsweek, and those who think like them, could create such “hate speech” laws here in the United States.

As an aside, pretend for a minute that Donald Trump had said to a news anchor “you know, you could be arrested for saying those false things if you lived in the UK.” It would immediately be presented as savage attack on the 1st amendment by every major network and you know what, it would probably be fair to do so. Yet, here’s Newsweek propagating such a ridiculous talking point and no one but a few conservative Twitter personalities will take up an objection.

With the current direction of the Democratic party, it’s just a matter of time before they try to pass such laws here in the U.S. Hopefully, the American people still have enough taste for their rights that they are willing to vote in ways that ensure that doesn’t happen.
