question for Bob McDonnell

conservative2 Sunday, March 29th at 2:33PM EST (link)

Hi Bob,
I am troubled by the friction between Frederick and some State Committee Members and you. I’m not sure I know what the issues are against Frederick, but I do know he is a good Conservative. Will this issue be addressed at the convention in May? Can you all come to a meeting of the minds for the good of VA & the Party? You’ve been a good Conservative too, I hope you don’t start wobbling the closer we get to election day. You have a good solid record and can be proud to run as the best and most qualified candidate for Govenor of VA.
Thank you!

10th Amendment Legislation

Rich Tandler (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 2:37PM EST (link)

Some 30 state legislatures have either introduced or have considered laws to reaffirm their rights under the 10th Amendment to the Constitution. This is the gist of most of them:

“Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the state of _________ hereby claims sovereignty under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States over all powers not otherwise enumerated and granted to the federal government by the U.S. ”

Would you be in favor of such legislation in Virginia and would you actively push the legislature to introduce and pass a 10th Amendment bill?

The tree of liberty must be refreshed with the tears of defeated politicians of BOTH parties and at ALL levels over the next few election cycles.

The Three T’s of reform–Term Limits, Tax Reform, and the Tenth Amendment

Mr. McDonnell, I second that question!

johnCV (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:31PM EST (link)

Thanks for taking some time with us – I have the exact same question as Rich Tandler.

In light of the staggering intrusion of the federal government into the States domain and private enterprise (witness todays GM forced retirement), where can we as Virginians expect you to draw the line to protect us from an out-of-control Federal regime?

I will third that question!...nt

Good 10th Amendment questions

Bob McDonnell (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:17PM EST (link)

Over the last 50 years state power under the 10th Amendment has been reduced by the courts. To restore the balance of federalism as our Founders envisioned, we must reinvigorate the 10th Amendment. For now, if there is overreaching or bad federal legislation, like the Card Check bill, I will not hesitate to take a strong stand against it.

Traffic Gridlock

chrisie (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 4:06PM EST (link)

I live in Hampton Roads and have experienced the horror known as the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. What is your plan to improve transportation issues within the Commonwealth, specifically the Hampton Roads area?

I am committed to improving transportation in Virginia

Bob McDonnell (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:22PM EST (link)

We must have a better transportation system to reduce congestion and promote business and help create jobs in Virginia. Having lived in Virginia Beach for 21 years I understand the regional challenges in Hampton Roads. I strongly support the upgrade of Route 460 to interstate quality from Suffolk to Petersburg. We need it for Hurricane evacuation and to support our great port. We need to reduce congestion at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, you are right! We can do this by improving alternate crossings. I also believe we should lay the foundations for high speed rail from Northern Virginia to Richmond to Hampton Roads. I will roll out a creative plan with market based and private sector solutions in the near future.

And three more things

kabane52 (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:13PM EST (link)

Do you support privatizing social security?

How involved should the government be in alternative energy development?

Do you support tax incentives for nuclear energy?

Welcome future Governor McDonnell

Scope (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:17PM EST (link)

I am excited that you will be our next Governor, however, there is some talk in the state about your 2nd Amendment positions. Please explain to us on Redstate where you stand with the 2nd Amendment. Also, it is more than disturbing that we are looking to replace the VA GOP Chair with just 7 months beforel the elections. Do you support that replacement, and if so, can someone new get up to speed to insure that everything will be in place to help you and other Republicans to get elected in November?

Second Amendment

Bob McDonnell (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:44PM EST (link)

Scope- thanks for the question.

I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. In the General Assembly I was the chief patron of many bills over the last decade to improve protection of Second Amendment rights. As Attorney General I championed legislation to keep out of state influences from trying to regulate law abiding Virginia gun dealers. You may have read about my high profile disagreement with Mayor Bloomberg of New York City. And we won.

I joined with other Attorneys General in the most important Second Amendment case in Virginia history last year to make the strong case that the Second Amendment embodies an individual, and not a collective, right to keep and bear arms. And the individual right was recognized by the Court in the Heller case, a huge victory for the individual right to bear arms.

As you know I was endorsed by the VCDL in 2005. I am committed to protecting Second Amendment liberties, which I mentioned in my speech yesterday.

Term Limits

Rich Tandler (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:28PM EST (link)

Are you in favor of the Virginia governor being unable to run for a second term? Would you support a state constitutional amendment to allow a second term?

Are you in favor of term limits for members of the U. S. House and Senate? The Virginia HOD and Senate?

The tree of liberty must be refreshed with the tears of defeated politicians of BOTH parties and at ALL levels over the next few election cycles.

Terms

Bob McDonnell (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:24PM EST (link)

I do support a second term for Virginia Governor’s. I do believe some slight rebalancing of powers between the executive and legislative branches might be needed to get this passed though.

How can I help?

restofva (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:32PM EST (link)

Mr. McDonnell,
I live in a city that you will win hands down. So what is the best way way for me to help outside of my district? Since I am one of those that has had his salary cut during these “worst economic times since the Great depression”, I am not in a position to help much financially so I would like to help in other ways.

Thanks for your support!

Bob McDonnell (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:31PM EST (link)

Again, sorry, having a few technical difficulties so that explains the delay! Restofva there are a million ways you can help and they are all important. put a sticker on your car, hand out stickers to friends, forward our emails around, sign up your friends for our email lists, volunteer to walk neighborhoods, write letters, and keep blogging about our campaign. Go to www.bobmcdonnell.com or call 804-612-9111 and we will get you involved!

Offshore drilling - Coal mining

ddstrain (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:42PM EST (link)

Notwithstanding your support for offshore drilling, how do you propose navigating the obstructionist environmental lobby in DC so that Virginia even has the opportunity to drill in its own waters?

How do you propose to increase the mining and usage of Virgnia’s coal resources for electricity generation, when the position of the Federal government is to suppress all fossil fuel use.

Thanks…

We need more energy and more jobs

Bob McDonnell (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:37PM EST (link)

We have the opportunity to be the first state on the East Coast to explore and drill for oil and gas offshore, and we can do this starting in 2011. Our Governor and the federal government appear intent to slow this down, this is wrong. Offshore drilling will create thousands of jobs, billions in capital investment, and hundreds of millions in tax revenue. It can be done in an environmentally friendly fashion so how can we say no? I will do everything I can as a candidate and Governor to put Virginia in a national leadership position when it comes to developing our energy resources. offshore is a part of a comprehensive energy policy which includes nuclear, clean coal, renewables and others. As Governor, I will put Virginia’s interest ahead of the special interest of national groups and left wing ideologues.

Clean coal technology continues to improve and we should speed up the permitting process at the state and federal level. I will make that a priority.

The question was "How will you do this?"

janis (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:43PM EST (link)

Given the stated goal of the Obama Administration to bankrupt the clean coal industry and only fund alternative energy proposals, how will you fight to do what you say you support?

I would like to know where you stand on....

JadedByPolitics (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 5:52PM EST (link)

Illegal immigration….do you believe we are a Sovereign nation and that the rule of law MUST be enforced?

Where does he stand on illegal immigration?

publiussteve Monday, March 30th at 1:08AM EST (link)

It’s probably too late to ask, but I would also like to know his stand on illegal immigration, specifically if he believes the primary way to combat this is by enforcing existing immigration laws; if he supports the 287(g) progarm & if he is willing to mandate the use of E-Verify for state contractors (like Gov. Carcieri in Rhode Island).

I second this question!!!

Thank you Sir and on to the Govenor’s mansion!

Old Guard vs New Blood

opditch Sunday, March 29th at 6:07PM EST (link)

Bob,
If Jeff Frederick successfully fights off the Old Guard (dead wood) on the SCC, what will you do to get the Old Guard SCC members on board with the majority of the grassroots who elected Jeff last year and turn Virginia Red again?

Great question OP

Glad to be Here

Bob McDonnell (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:15PM EST (link)

Hey folks, sorry about the delay in starting, a few computer issues in our hotel room just outside Martinsville. Day 2 of our “New Jobs, More Opportunities” statewide campaign kickoff tour, and today I visited with voters at the Martinsville race, stopped by an NAACP meeting in the area, and now am spending the evening doing a variety of online events. Tomorrow we go from Martinsville to Virginia Beach, joined by Governor Mike Huckabee at a few stops. Our campaign is off to a great start and we look forward to a fun and vigorous campaign based on our common-sense conservative principles and our driving goal of bringing new jobs and more opportunities to every region of Virginia. As I’ve done as Attorney General I look forward to regular and constant communications with the new media!

Repairing the Republican "brand"

SteveLA (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 6:37PM EST (link)

Mr. McDonnell

Coming off of two loosing general elections the Republican brand seems to have difficulty connecting with folks ether through the MSM Liberal filter or going directly to the American people.

What are your views on restoring the Republican brand?

and with no disrepect you answered your questions like a true politician!

As another Virginian Jaded

Scope (Diary) Sunday, March 29th at 7:27PM EST (link)

I agree, he ducked most, and, answered like a true politician. Very sad that this is being touted as the best Republican to run for Gov in Virginia in a long time. God in Heaven, save us.

You are so correct Jaded.

To me, “consensus” seems to be the process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values and policies. So it is something in which no one believes and to which no one objects … There are still people in my party who believe in “consensus” politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors … I mean it. — Margaret Thatcher
