A deal on missile defences angers Russia even though they may not work

“The Pentagon’s independent office to evaluate new equipment said last October that it was far from being able to certify “a high probability of [the system] working in an operationally effective manner once deployed”. It said intercepts of Iranian weapons were “very distinct” from past tests against simulated North Korean missiles over the Pacific, since shorter distances require a quicker response.”

“General Trey Obering, director of the Missile Defence Agency (MDA), calls Pentagon evaluators “very pessimistic”.”

On the other hand the article does argue that “if missile defences were just expensive junk, why would the Russians protest so loudly?” although we’ve certainly seen wasted defence spending before. Why should the Government spend “as much as $10 billion a year” of taxpayer’s money on this?

How exactly does he think (if he does) unproven technology becomes a working weapon system? (Answer: Same thing that keeps airplanes in the sky…Money!).

You know, the term “flip-flopper” is really too benign for this sort of behavior. I’d lean more towards “cynical about-faceer with no moral or strategic foundation”.

All of Barack Obama’s campaign promises have an expiration date. ALL of them do.

Why should we think this one any different?

And even if you somehow met that final objection in their Wonderland, they will always fall back to their default argument: “A missile-defense system is a waste of money that is only going to provoke our enemies.”

When I use a word, said Humpty Dumpty, it means only what I want it to mean.
