On September 12th, 2009 a crowd estimated at 500,000 to 2,000,000 gathered in the nation’s capitol to make their wishes known to Congress. They wanted irresponsible spending stopped. They wanted an end to unconstitutional legislation. They were ignored. Everyone I spoke to who took part in that rally labeled it one of the most personally inspiring events of their lifetime. Unfortunately, they hadn’t gone to Washington for a “mountain top” experience. They went to effect political change. At the time, it was all people could talk about. Today, just a few months later, I hear next to nothing about it.
By contrast, in the middle part of the last decade, a small number of wealthy men quietly flipped the state and federal delegations of one state from Republican to Democrat and did it without leaving home. Tim Gill and a few others dropped $10 million dollars into a couple of consecutive election cycles in Colorado. They, too, wanted to effect political change. No doubt many questioned their sanity and tactics. Those who ignored them did so to their detriment. Today, years later, I still hear about what is known as “the Colorado model”. Not because it moves men’s hearts; but because it changed a state.
The bottom line is “giving” is more effective than “going” – at least in politics.
These two stories from the past, one success – one failure, illuminate what’s at stake in the present. Let’s assume 1,000,000 people marched on Washington, DC last September spending 48-72 hours and $500 each to do so. Simple math reveals a pool of 48,000,000 to 72,000,000 man hours and a whopping $500,000,000 in cash. That’s enough to put 1 to 1.5 million man hours into phone banking, envelope stuffing, and door knocking to go along with $10,000,000.00 in giving to candidates in each state in the Union! In a single election cycle, in all 50 states, we can duplicate activity proven in one state to produce the political change we want.
I’m not saying marching on DC is a bad thing. In fact, I believe the 9-12 March helped solidify the national legitimacy of our political opposition to the agenda of those who would steal away our Liberty. It brought us together in a needed way. But it failed to put Government in its place.
There are already calls to return to DC in 2010 in even bigger numbers and to gather for a variety of causes. In this election year, I think that’s a mistake. Take the $500 you would spend and the hours you would invest and spend and invest them at home. Find and support – with your time, talent and treasure – candidates and organizations that represent you. Not only will that produce the political success we went to Washington to accomplish, it will produce the “band of brothers” relationships we’ll treasure for years as well.

vrwcnut Monday, January 11th at 10:00AM EST (link)perhaps we need “all of the above”.
An analysis of the finances of lots of us would likely reveal priorities that would shame our Founders. They pledged all- and some were actually required to pony up in ways the most vocal among us would shrink from. Homes burned. Families imprisoned and impoverished. Hung. They had a good lesson in what it means to pledge life and fortune. We write a check or spend a few hours working for a candidate and tend to think we’ve done our duty.
Visuals have their place and reinforce Beck’s mantra, “We surround them”. The very small percentage of conservatives who are active here can’t get this done alone. Gatherings like 9/12 or the proposed rally this coming August have their place.
We have the necessary recources to do both if we are willing to give of our “fortunes” to the point of real sacrifice.
Its an old story but germane: The chicken and pig who wanted to express their gratitude to their owner by fixing him breakfast of ham&eggs. The chicken contributed. The pig sacrificed.
"Take the $500 you would spend and the hours you would invest and spend and invest them at home." Amen.
ColdWarrior (Diary) Monday, January 11th at 10:01AM EST (link)Recommendation: spend that time and money and effort becoming a Republican Party precinct committeeman, recruiting other conservatives to become precinct committeemen, and helping make sure the BEST conservative Republican candidates win the all-important primary elections.
Thank you.

penguin2 (Diary) Monday, January 11th at 10:30AM EST (link)Over the years, many have just been writing a check and doing the few hours, or not. That causes people to become passive or just plain apathetic in having nothing to connect to- purpose or people. Human nature being what it is, needs the visual, the focus, the scene. That’s why whenever a tragedy is broadcast, the response is often overwhelming for aid to the victims.
When Joe Wilson uttered “you lie” he raised a million dollars, though he certainly wasn’t thinking that at the time. But it was a battle cry and that is what the people needed to hear and have someone yell from the rooftops. There were many signs at the 9/12 March with just those two words on it.
I understand what you are saying. It really is a two-pronged (or multiple) process; the Leftist Dems used an insidious plan and route, they have been doing it for years in the takeover of our academic institutions, schools, newspapers–brainwashing with propaganda. So yes, we need to do exactly what you are saying, and stop being “Johnny come lately” but the people hearts and minds are stimulated by feeling and seeing, and whatever meetings and marches occur in 2010 will reinforce what we are doing, not detract. I mean, why should it always be the Al Sharptons’ and Code Pink crowd out there?
The 9/12 March aided the focus and spirit for the elections that took place in Nov. 09. We have a reason to be out there broadcasting and yelling from the rooftops. It is that spirit which will get people to become active behind the scenes as well, just need leaders and direction for same. Which your post explains.

Loren Heal (Diary) Wednesday, January 13th at 8:44AM EST (link)It’s a false choice to ask whether we should give or go. If there is a need for boots on the ground, then we go. If there is a need for an “air game”, then we should give.

NightTwister (Diary) Monday, January 11th at 10:33AM EST (link)The money’s gone, they aren’t coming back, and we’re sending the Democrats packing. If the political climate stays as is, we’ll pick up the Governor’s seat, 3 U.S. House seats, and one U.S. Senate seat. There’s also an outside chance we could pick up the state House or Senate (or both).
All they proved is you can buy an election. Thankfully, they don’t have the money to buy it in perpetuity.

Blue_Collar_Muse (Diary) Monday, January 11th at 10:38AM EST (link)Agreed on all points.
That’s why I thought to include the time commitment along with the dollar amount.
It’s not just about giving money. We need to be more personally invested in this fight. That won’t happen if we haven’t got our wallets AND our walking shoes involved.
There are so many ways this can be expressed. Precinct captain or representative is an excellent way. In the interests of both brevity and not wanting to seem to be listing the “only” ways we can volunteer, I tried not to pin down volunteer opportunities other than generally.
I don’t mean that we shouldn’t “Go” at all. But we can go downtown, or to our county seat or state capitol. There’s plenty of going to do without going to DC.
It’s going to take all this and then some. But what a glorious fight!!
Thanks for the comments and recommends!

janis (Diary) Monday, January 11th at 2:31PM EST (link)And what you are proposing here is exactly where many of us are at this point– it’s not enough to just give money, nor is it just enough to go vote, although both are crucial. It’s critical for people to see us out in force supporting what we believe in, but regardless of what we believe, we can’t effect change without coming up with enough of that grubby green stuff to make sure our candidates and ballot initiatives get the attention that they deserve for success.
Here’s hoping that we can do enough to make the states we target “stay bought.”
Yep, already made the decision
toni100 (Diary) Wednesday, January 13th at 2:53PM EST (link)to fore go attending the SRLC, CPAC, TPN Convention (thank goodness) and my long time Milblog Conference. Not that I always attend these each year but I usually hit a couple of them. Not this year, that money is going (some already has) towards candidates. Especially in today’s financial climate I’m being very selective with I spend my money and my choice was to use towards candidates.
