It's difficult to believe that Williams doesn't know that he will be tossed aside like a used paper towel when the Dems are done with him - like when he's out of office. His district is a pretty reliably Republican East TN seat. I'm not sure if a credible Democrat challenger would run, so the likelyhood of Dems voting in the Republican primary exists. While we in TN will want to see him gone, even more important will be increasing the majority.

but the State House website already lists Naifeh as Speaker Emeritus....

http://www.capitol.tn.gov/house/members/h81.html

I saw RNC committeeman John Ryder speak the other night and he was already talking about organizing to help whoever runs against Williams in 2010. I hope that conservative activists nationwide can help us bring down this disgrace who now "leads" our State House.

That said, making the "moderates" more consistently conservative, or simply more loyal Republicans, i.e. like Rudy Giuliani, is my preferred route rather kicking them out wholesale. I won't go into detail on how to accomplish that, but I would say I have some ideas.

And by the way, the sentiment I subscribe to posits that it is not only that the party needs to rededicate itself to Reaganite principles, but that it also needs to find more effective and convincing ways to market those principles, itself, its history, and thus its candidates and the policies arising from those principles and today's issues to the American people.

moderates and ship them to the Dems. Which I have to say, seems to be happening with great alacrity these days.. I know working with the mushy middle is a pain in the rear, but it seems to me that the conservatives can work with the moderators or the Democrats will.

I know that sediment isn't really all the welcome here on RedState, but I certainly think the choice of many Republicans that the party needs to be more conservative will most certainly lead to fewer GOP officeholders.

... and the result was the completely ineffectual 109th Congress. 55 supposedly Republican Senators and 231 Republican House Representatives and we couldn't get anything done because we needed to keep our "moderates" happy.

In other words, like Reagan said just after the Watergate bloodbath, numbers are not everything. Some people are simply not worth having on our side - their presence is actually harmful.

is literally 50%+1 you're really not in a position to be too picky about who you let in the door.

When you have a 3 or 4 vote cushion, then you can start being a little more picky with your membership policies.

Looks like things are rotten in the state of Tennessee, too. Which really pisses me off, because this is MY state! And this Williams guy is from the EAST Tennessee (the most GOP, conservative) part of the state! And now we've got Lamar Alexander as one of the six GOP senators who voted FOR the release of the second half of TARP - I guess b/c he thought the first half was so successful? Other than GM and Chrysler getting another 2 - 3 months of life support at taxpayer expense, I cannot name one thing the first $350 BILLION accomplished. I mean of significance. Or that met the initial purpose of the bailout (not that the gift to GM/Chrysler did either, but...)

and you recommended the Milepost, which I purchased. Very helpful.

We're going to fly into Anchorage and rent a 4-wheel drive and see what we can see for about 3 weeks.

Can't wait.

Whitey Bulger, The Pride of South Boston and erstwhile leader of the Irish Mafia.

Wikipedia entry on Billy Bulger

[Former MA State Senate President William M.] Bulger's elder brother, James (aka Whitey), is a fugitive sought for murder and several other crimes. William Bulger's role in his brother's escape from authorities is a matter of some dispute. On June 19, 2003, he testified to a House about an incident in which, while still President of the Massachusetts State Senate, he "went to an arranged location in 1995 to take a call from his fugitive brother, apparently to avoid electronic eavesdropping. He said that accepting the call from the gangster without bothering to inform the FBI was 'in no way inconsistent with my devotion to my own responsibilities, my public responsibilities.'"[3]

During the hearing, when asked what he thought James (Whitey) did for a living, William Bulger said: Rep. ... “ I had the feeling that he was uh in the business of gaming and and uh ... Whatever. It was vague to me but I didn't think, uh—for a long while he had some jobs but uh ultimately uh it was clear that he was not uh um being um uh you know he wasn't doing what I'd like him to do.

Bulger also testified that the FBI never asked if he knew of Whitey's location. Those remarks were disputed by a former FBI agent who claimed Bulger declined to submit to an interview with the bureau.[5] Months later, the committee report found Bulger's testimony "inconsistent" about whether the FBI had contacted him in its search for his fugitive brother.[6]

twice for state Representative. The first time was when Cochran held the seat.

Cochran took Ralph Cole's seat the year (2002) Cole, a Republican voted in the House in favor of a state income tax.

My fear is that if more than one candidate runs for the seat in the Primary, Williams will win again.
