Congressman Jerry Lewis: Republican on Appropriations - and Corrupt!

Erick asked that we start making daily posting on Congressman Don Young everyday to highlight why the man needs to go. I believe Erick is right. However, I believe that for the sake of repairing all that is wrong with the Republicans in Congress, we need to expand that to the members on the appropriation committee. These folks are the poster children of Republican corruption! These are the people who have to go!
So, today I start with Jerry Lewis. This guy is the worst of the group in my opinion. Let me cover just one of his flagrant acts of corruption here today. I will come back with more another day.
It seems not only is he a porker, but he brought it to new levels along with Don Young. He also knows how to use it to buy friends favors on a scale with John Murtha too. I ran across this news story that bears reading. It really makes you shake your head in wonder. It also helps explain why Republicans are so despised by the electorate now.
From powerful positions on the House Appropriations Committee, California Rep. Jerry Lewis has 'greenlighted' hundreds of millions of dollars in federal projects for clients of one of his closest friends, lobbyist and former state Congressman Bill Lowery.
Meanwhile, Lowery, the partners at his firm and their clients have donated 37 percent of the $1.3 million that Lewis' political action committee received in the past six years.
Then there is this story from the Wall Street Journal Opinion page from right before the 2006 election. Read this column and ask yourself what has changed since it was written, other than our minority status?
This one is all about Republicans and their refusal to give up their power to spend money at will and pass out "earmarks" like a bartender offering drinks on the house. The chief culprits are the House Appropriators, led by Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis of California and his 13 subcommittee chairmen known as "cardinals." If Republicans lose the House--and they are well on their way--Mr. Lewis deserves the moniker of the minority maker.
For weeks, the Republican Study Committee, a group of fiscally conservative Members, had been negotiating a spending outline with the House leadership. But when they finally struck a deal last week, Mr. Lewis refused to go along and threatened to defeat the budget on the House floor if Speaker Denny Hastert brought it up.
I am sorry but these are the types of things we cannot stand for anymore if we are to rebuild this party back to what it was envisioned by men like William F Buckley. This is what has to stop and Jerry Lewis has to go - NOW!

I'd love to see someone knock Jerry Lewis off in a primary. That job falls to grassroots conservatives in Lewis's district. I'm just pointing out that it is difficult to unseat these ensconced GOP lawmakers who sit in comfortable, safe districts.

However, I guess my view is that he is part of the problem, and since I am in S Dakota and not in his district, someone has to start the ball rolling. I guess my intent is to start highlighting what a slime ball he is here.
I am hoping, even if it not this election cycle, it will start the ball rolling for next election cycle. We have to get somebody's attention in Washington DC, or California, so somebody opposes him eventually. I want to do something to address what is wrong with Republican Party now. Starting the conversation on what is wrong is how I am starting.
We all have issues with the Presidential election. I am focusing on Congress. I will be better on that subject. So, here I am.

Republicans control committee assignments in their caucus...He and anyone else with this kind of clear cronyism should be stripped of leadership positions on choice committees by the caucus!
Good luck getting them to police themselves however, but the point is that the damage to the Republican brand is self inflicted and won't be fixed until we deal with this in some way!

and might not survive his primary challenge.

....have a near lock on their districts. It's a conservative district so he'll get re-elected in perpetuity, and he's such a fixture that it's very hard to challenge him in the primary unless he screws up really bad, publicly.
Same goes for someone like Ken Calvert, and Don Young.
